Sister Ceo: The Black Woman's Guide to Starting Your Own Business ReviewSister CEO is very motivating, realistic, and I highly recommend it.
Broussard is obviously a go-getter and would be an asset in anyone's circle.
Her book would be very useful to ANY women who aspires entreprenuerialship.
Only one view in her book I did not agree with, and that was on the subject of financing your business. My interpretation was to borrow, beg, or take money out of your house, to do whatever was legally necessary to finance your business -just get started-. Understood if you're single, but if you are married this finanical decision should be agreed upon between BOTH partners.
Other than that, a Job Well Done, Broussard!Sister Ceo: The Black Woman's Guide to Starting Your Own Business Overview

Putting Emotional Intelligence To Work: Successful Leadership is More Than IQ ReviewWhile I found the material in the book to be useful, the idea of emotional intelligence is not a new concept. I found it interesting that there are many occassions where the author quotes Carl Rogers and his knowledge of emotional intelligence. I found this interesting because the concept of emotional intelligence was not put forth by Carl Rogers, rather it was put forth by Howard Gardner who believed standardized IQ tests do not fully measure a persons cognitive ability.
Carl Rogers, on the other hand, put forth the concept of client-centered therapy later changing the name to the person centered approach. A key to Rogers approach was giving the client or person unconditional positive regard. Now, I don't disagree with this approach and I think Rogers had a great deal of emotional intelligence. But when I saw the title contained "Emotional Intelligence," I expected the book to mention Gardner or Thorndike or Daniel Goleman who popularized the concept in the mid 90's. In Gardner's theory, he suggests that perhaps the part of the brain that controls emotional intelligence is more developed in some individuals than others. That is the theory behind the various intelligences he put forth.
As I was reading the conversations between the author and Rogers, it is obvious (to me) that Rogers used his person centered approach. Again, creating an atmosphere where the author could say anything and he didn't have to fear rejection from Rogers. This is the unconditional positive regard. This is the concept the author is attempting to get across to business executives. Create an atmosphere where employees feel free to express their ideas without fear of rejection. The idea may not be something that could be used, but if they feel their ideas are valued and will not be laughed at, it will increase their creative input. Rogers was also noted for not giving advice, rather, he would reflect back to the person what they said, let them think about it and come to their own conclusion.
The author also mentions Theory Z in the book, which is a Japanese style of managment. While he praises this management style, what he fails to mention or get across is the cultural difference. Japan is a collectivist culture whereas America is an individualistic culture. For the collectivist, it is a group effort and if one individual succeeds it is the whole group who is recognized. For the individualist, it is an individual effort and if the individual succeeds, the individual is recognized. Considering the cultural differences, would it be possible to successfully implement this management style within an individualistic culture.
Simply put, what it all comes down to is how well does one get along with others? To me, the book is filled with old concepts but repackaged and sold in a different way. Perhaps all we really needed to know we learned in kindergarten?

Listen Up, Mr. President: Everything You Always Wanted Your President to Know and Do ReviewI bought this book thinking that I would read a chapter or two a week and learn some previously unknown nuggets of information and insights about our past presidents. Without giving away spoilers or free samples, I read the first chapter. It was so good I then read chapter two. Then chapter three. The next thing I know, I'm done with the book in one sitting. Though I didn't agree with some of their assessments of some Presidents (I'm a conservative and these are mainstream media types so it's safe to say they are a bit to the left of myself), the book was never lacking in original insights and lessons. Moreover, there were no cheap shots taken under the belt, even in the sections that I may have disagreed with. It's very fair. Chapter one is definitely worth the price of the book for those interested in the Presidency and anyone looking to get into T.R.'s proverbial Arena of politics. I personally found that the parts of the book that dealt with how the Presidency is covered and the give and take between the President/Executive Branch and the fourth estate, particularly the fourth chapter, came to life, for obvious reasons--Thomas and Crawford are journalists! A surprisingly wonderful and insightful read--and that's coming from a conservative who isn't too fond of most in the mainstream media. Go buy a copy, you won't regret it.Listen Up, Mr. President: Everything You Always Wanted Your President to Know and Do Overview

Smarts: Are We Hardwired for Success Review
In one of Chuck Martin's previous works, Tough Management, he recommends "seven winning ways to make tough decisions easier, deliver the numbers, and grow the business in good times and bad." None of the "ways" is a head-snapper, nor does Martin make any such claim. The substantial value of this book is derived, rather, from responses by more than 2,000 senior executives and managers in 50 countries who participated in a survey conducted by NFI Research, Martin's firm. They completed a brief survey segment every two weeks over a period of 24 months. That is a key point because, over time both circumstances and respondents' reactions to them change. The final survey results thus have much greater credibility. Martin operates a global idea exchange and research engine with a network base of more than 2,000 senior executives and managers from more than 1,000 companies in more than 50 countries, including half of the Fortune 500. His observations and recommendations are thus based on an abundance of real-world data that he and his NFI associates continue to accumulate and then evaluate with meticulous care.
In this volume, which he co-authored with Peg Dawson and Richard Guare, Martin develops in much greater depth many of the core concepts introduced in his previous books. For example, insights concerning how both individuals and collaborative teams can achieve and then sustain superior performance by leveraging their strengths (i.e. talents, skills, temperament, and experience) when completing tasks for which those strengths are most appropriate. In this volume, the authors assert that there are certain brain functions starting at birth "and they are "`hardwired'" into every individual. Brain researchers have found that these skills are fully developed by the time you become an adult. These skills are called `Executive Skills' because they help you execute tasks." OK but so what?
As the authors then explain, our strongest skills will continue to be our strongest skills and our weakest will continue to be our weakest -- and are not significantly changeable - as we become adults. "The opportunity is how to deal with [strengths and weaknesses], and this book provides a framework for you to do that." They identify and then rigorously examines twelve executive skills that range from self-restraint to stress tolerance. Mastery of these skills by those who comprise the workforce within a given organization (regardless of its size or nature) will enable it to derive substantial improvement of its productivity, quality, employee recruitment, employee retention, training, teamwork, competitive edge, reduction of stress, meetings, operational execution, and information management.
Martin, Dawson, and Guare agree with countless others that organizations must measure only what is most important, and they should do so with consistency. Hence the value of diagnostic tools such as the "Executive Skills Profile" that he provides in Appendix B. It enables each of those who read this book to tap into their greatest Executive Skills strengths and then leverage them when completing whatever tasks to which they have been assigned. At this point, it is important to keep in mind that one of the greatest challenges for supervisors is to make certain that they are locating those for whom they are directly responsible in proper alignment with tasks appropriate to their given strengths. Organizations that sustain such alignment are "hardwired for success" because their people - as individuals and as members of a team - are themselves "hardwired for success."
In my opinion, this is Chuck Martin's most valuable book, thus far, and another brilliant achievement. He and his co-authors, Peg Dawson and Richard Guare, invite those who wish to obtain updates and/or share their own comments to visit www.smartsthebook.com.
Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Martin's other books. I also recommend Bill George's Authentic Leadership and True North, Michael Ray's The Highest Goal, Ram Charan's Know-How, Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman's First, Break All the Rules and Buckingham and Donald O. Clifton's Now, Discover Your Strengths, Buckingham's The One Thing You Need to Know and Go Put Your Strengths to Work, and Success Built to Last co-authored by Jerry Porras, Stewart Emery, and Mark Thompson.Smarts: Are We Hardwired for Success Overview

S.K.I.R.T.S in the Boardroom: A Woman's Survival Guide to Success in Business and Life ReviewHaving read several personal development books, not necessarily targeted towards women, when I came across SKIRTS in the Boardroom, I was intrigued by the title and wondered what deposits this book could make into my life that had not already been made by the other business books I had digested. Being at a crossroads in my life, I really wanted to begin the new year taking steps toward the things I was really passionate about doing and cleaning house of anything that would keep me from acheiving this goal. Little did I know, this book and its content, would be a godsend.

Starting with a chapter on Confidence, Marshawn Evans weaves stories from her own life and its struggles with issues that women, young and older, face in corporate America, entrepreneurship, and life. With chapters on staying the course, differences in gender communication, networking, developing your personal brand, and more, this book is like having your own personal development coach at your fingertips.

What I really love, is that the book is written so conversationally and how easy I was able to relate my personal situation to the stories shared in the book. Secondly, the wrap-ups at the end of each chapter, keeping the important points fresh in your mind. And lastly, the worksheets at the end of each chapter, which really make and keep you accountable. Who knew it was so hard to think of five meaningful words that actually described me and why... I'm still working on two more!!

This book has really helped me begin to get on track and I recommend it to anyone who needs guidance at any stage of their lives. I know that the book is written with women in mind, but I honestly think men can learn a lot from its content as well. It's definitely a book to keep, revisit, lend to friends, and give as a gift. I am on my way to maximizing my potential and living out my purpose.S.K.I.R.T.S in the Boardroom: A Woman's Survival Guide to Success in Business and Life Overview

Measure of a Leader: The Legendary Leadership Formula For Producing Exceptional Performers and Outstanding Results ReviewIn Measure of a Leader, behavioral experts Dr. Aubrey Daniels and James Daniels propose yet another "new model of leadership." Under this model, the authors suggest that the leader's role is to create conditions under which followers apply discretionary effort to implement the organizational mission, vision and values. They define discretionary behavior as "that behavior that a person could do if they choose, but for which they would not be punished if they
didn't...commonly (referred) to as going above and beyond the call of duty" (p. 16).
Unlike other books on leadership which focus on the leader's behavior, this book claims that the follower's behavior in response to the leader is what truly defines effective leadership. The four criteria of follower behavior include followers:
1. Apply discretionary effort towards the leader's goals;
2. Voluntarily sacrifice self-interest for the leader's cause;
3. Reinforce or critique others to encourage conformance to the leader's teachings; and
4. Establish guidelines for their own personal behaviors based upon what they perceive the leader
would approve or disapprove.
The book covers 19 chapters in an easy-to-read 200 pages. I found chapter three on discretionary effort, chapter five on leaders and managers, chapter nine on measuring follower response, and the Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (ABC) Model of follower motivation in chapter 11 to be of particular interest. The Appendix includes a very useful checklist highlighting 50 things to do for increasing leadership impact.
The writing is crisp and matter-of-fact, almost free of academic jargon that can confuse readers. It's clear through the examples and terminologies the authors use that they are incorporating lessons from their personal experiences as military leaders into this model. The book's coverage of the leader's application of positive reinforcement to create momentum for change is valuable since organizations typically rely on negative reinforcement and then wonder why the right behaviors aren't demonstrated consistently. Negative reinforcement reduces the likelihood of negative behaviors but doesn't encourage acceptable behavior--positive reinforcement does.
Recommended for business consultants, corporate managers, or professors interested in understanding the importance of follower behavior in defining effective leadership and how to inspire discretionary effort in achieving organizational mission, vision, and values.
Armchair Interviews says: Another look at leadership.Measure of a Leader: The Legendary Leadership Formula For Producing Exceptional Performers and Outstanding Results Overview

amBITCHous: (def.) A Woman Who: 1. Makes more money 2. has more power 3. gets the recognition she deserves 4. has the determination to go after her dreams and ReviewAfter hearing Debra Condren interviewed on a podcast about how women undermine their own ambitions, I couldn't wait to read her book. I related to her thesis. Sometimes, out of fear of looking like I have a huge ego, I don't even try to take on projects that I know I'm capable of. In other words, I need to learn how to be a little more ambitchous.
That word is Condren's way of describing the double standard facing women. As she puts it, "Ambitious men are go-getters, but ambitious women are bitches." She illustrates her point with Madonna and Carly Fiorina. Media stories about both of them tend to focus on their faults instead of their accomplishments. (Perhaps we could add Paris Hilton to that list.)
Through interviews with other women and her work as a business coach, Condren has developed strategies to help women overcome the fear of being ambitious. She bemoans the fact that many advice books suggest that achieving "balance" requires career sacrifices. Nonsense, she says. Putting your career ambitions first makes you a better person, she argues, because you will be a happier one. "You must regard your deepest career aspirations as unconditionally sacrosanct," she writes.
While the pep talk is inspiring, the real value of this book lies in its concrete tips. She recommends asking for the raise you deserve, claiming credit when it's due, asking for advice from women you respect, and taking regular sabbaticals to make sure you are dreaming big. All of it is great advice that I plan to incorporate into my life.
And when I'm done with this book, I can think of more than a few friends I'd like to pass it on to.amBITCHous: (def.) A Woman Who: 1. Makes more money 2. has more power 3. gets the recognition she deserves 4. has the determination to go after her dreams and Overview

The Little Black Book of Success: Laws of Leadership for Black Women ReviewThis book has it flaws--I wish that the chapters were longer and a little more fleshed out; I think that the subdivision of each chapter into three parts was not always necessary; and, I wish that the authors had added more illustrative examples from their individual experiences since they each have such interesting, exciting, and successful careers. That being said, I would still recommend this book to anyone (not just African-American women) who wants to more ably manage his or her career. While I had heard some of the tips before, many of them were new and fresh, and they really helped me to reconsider ways that I could accelerate my professional progress. I also really appreciate that, rather than just spouting platitudes, the authors give specific, concrete action steps for their readers to follow in various situations--in my experince, this is rare, so the inclusion is a very notable and welcome change from what is contained in similar literature. Finally, I liked that the book was informative but still a quick and easy read--very useful when trying to balance future professional development with current professional responsiblities. All in all, a good "little black book".The Little Black Book of Success: Laws of Leadership for Black Women Overview

Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant: How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job ReviewI have been a senior manager at a successful printing company for over 50 years. During that time, I have had as many as 100 employees. Even though this engaging book mostly deals with how the employee should handle their bosses, it is also a valuable lesson for managers who want to know how they are irritating their employees. There is also a management section on how to prevent the proliferation of "junior TOTs" among your staff, which gave me ideas, too.
I must admit that when I've been under pressure over the years to meet deadlines, there have been times when I behaved a bit like a tyrant. I have sometimes felt that my staff needed to be scolded like kids, before they did their job correctly. I believed that I had that right, because I paid them. From my point of view, I felt that a boss has every right do so because he (or she) is just that, "the boss." When I finally realized that they were laughing behind my back, I decided to seek advice on "Bossism."
After seeing Ms. Taylor's interview on TV, I decided to buy her book. Boy, what a lesson I learned! I wish I had read it sooner. It made me start to look at my employees from their perspective of me. I've begun to change my behavior and have started appreciating the employee's perspective of working for a bossy boss.Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant: How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job Overview

Crazy Bosses: Fully Revised and Updated Review....of Crazy Bosses! Not only did I have them, I'm sure I was one, too - there's nothing like a corporate environment to bring out interesting tendencies in anyone. When I received an anonymous e-mail at work, with excerpts from this book, I had to have it!
Easy to read, written with wit and actual substance, this book (predecessor to the very popular "Who Moved My Cheese?" and "When Smart People Work for Dumb Bosses") helped get me through some difficult times.
If you can't just stop working to do something you really enjoy -- and not many can, aside from Dilbert's Scott Adams and me -- this book is like an emotional teddy bear with teeth. He defines different "Crazy Bosses" by behavior (most of us are a mix), reasons why they may be that way, and practical ways to work with them, because most of aren't likely to get away from them, even if we change corporations and bosses.
The truth most of us don't want to know is that the insanity of the business world is ours to deal with, not management's to fix. There is no one coming to the rescue - and we each play our own part to the madness, by our own responses. This book is a good aid with suggestions on what to do and what NOT to do, to survive.
We have to rely on our own emotional and physical health, friends, a sense of humor and a sense of our own self-worth (aside from work) so we won't feel like a victim.
The book I found the most helpful throughout my corporate life - and it was great in my real life, too - was M. Scott Peck's "The Road Less Traveled." "Life is difficult," and once we figure that out, we can get on with living! If you are feeling like a victim, read these books and start a discussion with a friend or two!
Good luck - and rest assured that there *is* life after work!Crazy Bosses: Fully Revised and Updated Overview

The Little Book of Leadership: The 12.5 Strengths of Responsible, Reliable, Remarkable Leaders That Create Results, Rewards, and Resilience (Jeffrey Gitomer's Little Book) ReviewOver the years I've read a wide assortment of leadership books and I've certainly learned from each and every one of them. But every now and then, you pick up a leadership book and something about it just grabs you and won't let go. You find yourself drinking in knowledge and ideas and become totally absorbed in the author's message. Such is the case with Jeffrey Gitomer's LITTLE BOOK OF LEADERSHIP. I am very passionate about leadership and therefore passionate about books on leadership, but it's been a long time since I've held a book that captured my interest like this one has. I've also read several books by Gitomer and he always manages to capture my interest, but this one even exceeded my expectations. I think this is the best work he has put out in quite some time.

This is really a leadership training manual. If you were tasked with training a new leader, you could literally use this as a textbook. There are 13 chapters (okay, 12.5 chapters), but the book will grab your attention even before you get to the actual chapters. The intro itself contains insight on how best to use the book, defining leadership and how to define your role as leader and the forward by Doc Hershey that explains situational leadership and the four quadrants and bell curve.
I'm sure some critics will belittle the fact that Gitomer uses this book to encourage readers to buy some of his other books, such as the Little Gold Book of Yes Attitude. Personally, I have no issue with this tactic, especially in this context. You see, the "Yes Attitude" is a subchapter in Chapter 2 on Mental Leadership, so why wouldn't he offer a resource for you to use for further development?
Those familiar with Gitomer's books will recognize the familiar formatting, different and unique and I must admit, not readily accepted by all readers. The first Gitomer book I ever read almost drove me crazy with the formatting, but once I got used to it, it all started to make sense. You'll find the same thing here, links to more information and other online resources, a liberal disbursement of quotes, self evaluations and numbered lists. Also each chapter and subchapter concludes with 2 major elements; Key Points of Understanding and Key Action to Take.

I've just about worn out a mechanical pencil underlining and making margin notes. You're going to find an incredible amount of information here that you will want to put to work for you. We all want to become the best leader we can possibly be. This book will help to become just that. Make this the next priority on your reading list.

Inside Every Woman: Using the 10 Strengths You Didn't Know You Had to Get the Career and Life You Want Now Review"Inside Every Woman: Using the 10 Strengths You Didn't Know You Had to Get the Career and Life You Want Now"
by Vickie L. Milazzo...
Gals,if you have ever been to an all girls Tupperware party, you already may realize that the fun is not in buying all that plastic stuff to preserve our food, but it is the time and companionship we spend with the other women. We turn the party into a confessional of sorts, saying things to each other, we might never say in mixed company. We build each other up, congratulate each other on small things, but it means so much to us. The fun is in preserving our self-worth(Okay, and maybe our sanity), and it is the other women that truly understand how to do that. You may not realize it, but if you recognize this experience, you are already in tune with Vickie Milazzo's strength #10 of the 10 strengths you will find inside this book, and inside yourself, 'Female Fusion'.

"Inside Every Women" is a realistic and doable, no nonsense approach to improving your life, and your career. It's not some new age, idealistic, find your higher self and other senses, mumbo jumbo. It is a look at the ten empowering and marvelous strengths EVERY woman has within themselves, and Ms. Milazzo will help you find them. Fire, Intuitive Vision, Engagement, Agility, Genius, Integrity,Endurance, Enterprise, Renewal and Fusion. A chapter is devoted to each of these 10 traits. They are laid out in a well thought out, intelligent, and comprehensible way, and some terrific examples of how to gather these strengths are given as well. By the end of each chapter you will already feel ready to get up and go. By the end of the book, you may feel fired up enough to write your own book!

With each strength, you will also make 5 promises to yourself. The promises are the same, but applied differently to each strength. Each Chapter has a place to write down your ideas, that will be prompted by some insightful questions given to ask yourself. These promises will "provide the fuel" as Ms. Milazzo says. For example: Promise 1: "I will Live and Work a Passionate Life". For your "Intuitive Vision", strength, you will describe a vision of an accomplishment you want to achieve.Write it down, and Promise 3: what action you may take towards it each day(and then do it!). You will also find some personal stories from women that have found these inner strengths. In the last strength, the 'Fusion' section, a well structured meeting of women is planned out. Fahgettabout that Tupperware party, this Fusion party, where women get a chance to share their uninterrupted thoughts(no competition from burping plastic products),and get positive feedback, will be much more meaningful in your life. And..if you plan to do this, you can invite other women to the group who you feel are incredible and inspiring.

I found this to be one of the most inspiring and motivating self-improvement books I've ever read. I found myself nodding my head with recognition, and anxious to get to the promise section at the end of each chapter.Vickie Milazzo is a self-accomplished woman, who runs her own company. She's a go-getter with vision. She knows how to get things done, and is also pretty good at stressing relaxation plays a big part as well. She is kind enough to impart all these words of wisdom to us. Read them and just try not to be motivated by them. I think the strength she helps us find within us, may be applied to any part of lives, personal as well as career. Any area you want to improve.

I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy of this book, and can hardly restrain myself from telling all the women I know about it. If you have a dream. a vision, of something in your life you want to accomplish or change for the better, I highly recommend "Inside Every Woman". It will light that fire you have glowing inside of you.

Enjoy the read....Laurie

Never Eat Alone: And Other Secrets to Success, One Relationship at a Time ReviewIt seems like much of the efficacy of Ferrazzi's tactics lies in blurring the distinction between the personal and the professional connections. Not even church-going remains sacred.
At what point does a close-knit network become more invaluable than acquaintanceships struck during in-flight snackbreaks? Are 500 people willing to answer your calls (after the umpteenth time you've attempted to ambush them on the phone during their off hours) really an asset? Readers should keep in mind that one will not be able to fool all of the people all of the time with false pretenses of friendship. Ferrazzi's work would be more effective if he differentiated between intensities of friendship and the tactics most appropriate for each.
Further difficulties include:
-Networking Plan of Action (unfortunately acronymed NAP) includes scarcely a page of information about how to construct one.
-The arguments are often internally inconsistent: receiving an invitation to a 15 min coffee break is an affront, while sending one tops the personal arsenal list. Katharine Graham is eulogized as a champion of both "somebodies" and "nobodies." Yet Ferrazzi's lists of "people he'd like to meet" and his incessant extolling of the virtues of name-dropping seems to indicate "nobodies" are nobodies in his book. Finally, the distinction between a "networking jerk" and commendable behavior is, at best, subtle.
-For an individual so concerned with connectedness, it is curious that a bibliography or appendix of suggested reading is entirely absent.
May I suggest:
*How to Win Friends and Influence People: soft skills development
*Big Fish (a novel of "mythic proportions" by Daniel Wallace): a more sympathetic view on spin, for contemplating your own self-marketing plan or why Ferrazzi really left Deloitte.
*The Tipping Point: Chapter 2 is a more rigorous exploration of the roles the uber-connected play in social networks.

Sidetracked Home Executives: from Pigpen to Paradise ReviewPam and Peggy certainly know what it feels like to be living in total chaos, and they use that understanding to good effect in this book, showing step by step how they got organized. They don't take any knowledge or organizational ability for granted, and they have great senses of humor. Their card-file system will probably work for most people who are SHE's (Sidetracked Home Executives) because of their creativity, or just general distractedness.
If, however, you are a SHE because you're a frozen perfectionist, someone who never cleans because you don't have time to do it RIGHT, this is not the book for you. The card-file is wonderful - except that I'm entirely capable of spending the next 6 months making sure I've got the file system perfect without ever actually doing any of the stuff on it. There's also nothing to prevent you from overloading yourself with nit-picking chores and burning out. If these sound like things you would be prone to, then I would recommend "Sink Reflections" by Marla Cilley instead. She uses much of the same material as Pam and Peggy (she credits them as her inspiration), but her program is specifically designed for those of us who try so hard for perfection we get nowhere.
If perfectionism isn't your problem, then by all means go with Pam and Peggy. They're great fun to read, and however bad your house is, they will understand.Sidetracked Home Executives: from Pigpen to Paradise Overview
