Managing Virtual Teams (Artech House Professional Development Library) ReviewI have really looked a long time to find a book that has a practical management perspective. Most of the books I've read on virtual teams either focus on bits and bytes (which I don't need since I'm an IT Director) or high level organizational theory. This book had some really practical suggestions that I could implement to improve communication and control for my team.Managing Virtual Teams (Artech House Professional Development Library) Overview

Don't Kill the Bosses: Escaping the Hierarchy Trap ReviewThis is an excellent book which has begun to significantly change the way I perceive my workplace and how I act within it. These new insights by Culbert and Ullmen are exceptionally focused and proactive - And I have been looking for some methods of dealing with these issues that are both realistic and EFFECTIVE. After many years in the workforce, I was beginning to look at many organizations and systems with a "that's just the way it is" mentality - but this book has well-defined strategies for breaking out of that trap. I highly recommend this book for all businesses - but especially my co-workers and friends in large companies - who can benefit greatly in their dealings with large-company politics and management issues.Don't Kill the Bosses: Escaping the Hierarchy Trap Overview

The Bible on Leadership: From Moses to Matthew -- Management Lessons for Contemporary Leaders ReviewI have titled my review "Surprisingly Well Done" because I frankly didn't expect the quality of reading I enjoyed in this book. I'll admit to being a bit jaundiced by one book after another comparing biblical characters and ancient historical figures like Attila the Hun to today's situations and leaders. But, if AMACOM, the publishing division of the American Management Association, is presenting this book, maybe there is some substance in these pages after all.
I opened the book with apprehension, half-expecting a Bible-thumping worship of religious heroes. Surprise! I was captivated right away by the almost conversational tone of the writing that pulled me in. The messages are much more "real," than pushy. The preachiness I feared did not materialize. Instead, lessons were shared on the fundamentals of leadership, with examples from Biblical characters and modern-day corporate and political leaders.
Woolfe is obviously quite conversant with the Bible, its stories, and its lessons. I am not, so I was frankly concerned that I wouldn't have the knowledge to relate to the book's teachings and message. I found that Woolfe described enough about each character and story that I understood. The people cited-Biblical and modern, are used as vehicles for Woolfe to make his points about ten attributes of leaders: honesty and integrity, purpose, kindness and compassion, humility, communication, performance management, team development, courage, justice and fairness, and leadership development.
As you read this book, expect to pause to reflect frequently. It will be a comfortable experience, rather than an unsettling challenge to your morals. Each chapter concludes with Biblical lessons on the theme of the chapter-not religious, Biblical. It's sort of a comparison of management literature from two different eras and not at all intimidating. A good set of reference notes and an index add value to the book.
Commentary: Understandably, this book addresses Judeo-Christian culture-both in its themes and it's content and treatment. It would be interesting to see a set of these books, with similar comparisons to perceived qualities of leaders and the religious literature of the culture that supports the written heritage. The Bible on Leadership: From Moses to Matthew -- Management Lessons for Contemporary Leaders Overview

Breaking into the Boardroom ReviewI was very fortunate to have taken this training in the 1980's, personally given by the author, Jinx Melia, under the sponsorship of the U.S. Government's Office of Personnel Management for women in the federal government. It was one of the defining moments that changed the course of my career propelling me towards success. What an eyeopener! I have since purchased it for every young woman I mentor, including my own daughters. It is a shame it is now out of print.Breaking into the Boardroom Overview

Women at the Top: Powerful Leaders Tell Us How to Combine Work and Family ReviewWe seldom have chance to look from behind the brightest women from all over the world. They are so brilliant in their own profession that we nearly forget their role in their own families, which also means so much to them. Their experience sharing throws light on those who strive for excellence in their profession and at the same time cherish so much their own families. The live cases demonstrate that women can be successful in both of the roles without sacrificing either one. They also demonstrate their road moving forward to success by overcoming the difficulties, obstacles and conflicts, which is not an easy task. The book is no doubt encouraging and inspiring to those working mothers, who may not be the women at the top, but who feel tired, wearisome and even guilty in the course to a dually successful life. It is an energy charger.Women at the Top: Powerful Leaders Tell Us How to Combine Work and Family Overview

Sister Ceo: The Black Woman's Guide to Starting Your Own Business ReviewSister CEO is very motivating, realistic, and I highly recommend it.
Broussard is obviously a go-getter and would be an asset in anyone's circle.
Her book would be very useful to ANY women who aspires entreprenuerialship.
Only one view in her book I did not agree with, and that was on the subject of financing your business. My interpretation was to borrow, beg, or take money out of your house, to do whatever was legally necessary to finance your business -just get started-. Understood if you're single, but if you are married this finanical decision should be agreed upon between BOTH partners.
Other than that, a Job Well Done, Broussard!Sister Ceo: The Black Woman's Guide to Starting Your Own Business Overview

Value Nets: Breaking the Supply Chain to Unlock Hidden Profits ReviewThis book is the closest I have read in delivering a practical understanding of how to tear apart the supply chain in your industry and re-assemble it to better deliver value to your customers.
It does provide real emphasis on getting to know what the customer wants and then working to deliver this - first, second and last.
That said, the authors do then readily accept what the currently successful players tell them about how they did thier customer alignment. There is very little on HOW you can learn do do the same.
There is no critical assessment of how (say) Gateway have been right or WHY they are right today and if this is sustainable into the future. There is a lot of positive words about how well it works, but the assessment (to me) is very rear view mirror - telling what has happened and why we think it works, not drilling down to real customers and explaining what they took out as value from their buying experience.
This is a great book to inform an experience reader as to new possibilities - if you are new to supply chain thinking, do not start here, this assumes a high level of base knowledge and skills. If you want a solid foundation, read Michael Porter (Competitive Advantage) and Kuglin (Customer Centered Supply Chain Management) then come back to this book. And then get a blank sheet of paper to list out how your industry value chain can be re-written from the existing industry supply chain and then you are on the way to finding competitive advantage.

The Drama of Leadership ReviewI love this book for its clarity and new thinking. The language is engaging and the description is clear. It take a standing on Leadership types and dare to fight the conventional wisdom of leader-vs-manager.
This is a book on the thinking about the Leadership type, which describes its stregth, needs and weakeness within corporations.
The Artist, Craftmans and Technocrats. Most readers would like to think that he/she is the crossing between Artist n Craftmans and the book do warn us on this. please double check yourself and think again honestly.
This is not a very deep book (like Mitszberg: The Rise and Fall of Strategic Thinking), but also not a shallow book (like FISH or W-M-M-CHEESE, ONE MINUTE SERIES), but just right in between. Enjoyable to read.
And if not for anything else. the above explanation of the 3 types alone would shred new lights in your view of the leaders. And worth your time invested in reading it. The other important thing to point is that Leadership Type is not teachable or even changeble, so much for the leadership seminars. ( I believe this to some extend, that entrepreneurs are similarly -mostly- BORN and not made!)
The book did not give u a HOW TO do something, but let you think about leadership adn how people differ from each others.
A mandatory reading for management leader. and Psychology student focusing on management. The Drama of Leadership Overview

Leading the Way: Three Truths from the Top Companies for Leaders Review"Leading the Way: Three Truths from the Top Companies for Leaders" by Robert Gandossy and Marc Effron, deals with the three leadership truths which they believe provides "critical foundation" to build strong leaders. The three leadership truths are: 1) The CEO and Board of Directors should provide leadership and inspiration (actively involved in leadership processes) , 2) A maniacal focus on high-potential leaders (identify the best talent and providing challenging assignment for them) and 3) Doing the right programs the right ways (developing programs that would help enhance leadership skills). However there are other "Little Things" that organizations should also considered in terms of building leaders such as communication, paving the way for social networks, fostering reciprocity and others which are seemingly unimportant issues or frequently overlooked, but are actually crucial for organizations. These are explained in great details in the book. Finally, the authors feel that leadership programs in general should be link directly to the organization's business strategy.
The last chapter in "Leading the Way" deals with future trends that organizations need to face in order to be successful and five rules that the authors feel were curcial to develop leadership capabilities. I think overall, this is a useful book to learn and understand about developing leaders as the authors provided examples, and anecdotes which are useful in terms of illustrating the authors' point of view. My only criticism of this book is that I wish the authors had structured it better within each chapters. There are many subtopics within each chapter which can be a little confusing and can be combined. However, I do find the short summary in each chapters helpful. Anyone who is interested to know more about developing leaders should definitely read this book.Leading the Way: Three Truths from the Top Companies for Leaders Overview

The Boss ReviewThis is an incredible book - a perfect one for a long airline flight. You feel like a fly on the wall watching the most infuriating injustices in the workplace. But because we've all had or have heard about dreadful bosses like those featured in this engrossing tale, we know it actually could have happened.
I've recommended it for my university masters students studying organizational politics. It demonstrates very realistically what actually goes on in most organizations. It is a book any office or professional worker will identify with, and is a salutory tale for anyone new to the workforce. Strongly recommended. The Boss Overview

The Leadership Advantage: How the Best Companies Are Developing Their Talent to Pave the Way for Future Success Review
The best-practices companies that Robert Fulmer and Jared Bleak selected and then discuss in this lively volume are Caterpillar, Cisco Systems, PepsiCo, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Washington Group International. That's quite a diverse group and all of them build a leadership advantage by committing to essentially the same four principles that serve as themes:
1. Making leadership development a strategic lever: "organizations experience major change events leading to profound teachable moments...[They] build a strong linkage between business strategy and leadership development strategy...[Their executives] use leadership development as a powerful tool to formulate, translate, and communicate strategy...[their] lean competency models and values are the foundations of strategic leadership development."
I have quoted these key points (provided in Chapter1) to indicate the scope of what Fulmer and Bleak cover in the next chapter in which they explore this principle in depth. They also provide (in Chapter 1) several key points that will guide and inform a careful reading of the other three principles:
2. Building an aligned architecture for strategic leadership development (Chapter 3)
Here's a "must read": Enterprise Architecture As Strategy: Creating a Foundation for Business Execution co-authored by Jeanne Ross, Peter Weill, and David Robertson.
3. Implementing successful strategic leadership development (Chapters 4 and 5)
Here's another "must read": Lawrence Hrebiniak's Making Strategy Work: Leading Effective Execution and Change.
4. Evaluating success (chapter 6)
Here's still another "must read": Dean Spitzer's Transforming Performance Measurement: Rethinking the Way We Measure and Drive Organizational Success.
Then in Part II, Fulmer and Bleak present detailed case studies of the aforementioned best-practice companies, devoting a separate chapter to each. Yes, all of them are large corporations but there are important lessons that can be learned from each in terms of how a leadership advantage was achieved and then sustained by an effective leadership development program and these lessons are relevant to all organizations, regardless of size or nature. The importance of active and central involvement by C-level executives, especially by a CEO, cannot be exaggerated. It is worth noting that, Jeff Immelt, commits at least 25% of his time to helping to develop leadership among middle managers at GE.
This book will be of substantial benefit to any organization if (huge "if) its senior managers sincerely believe that its people are its most valuable asset. This shared faith will guide and inform leadership development initiatives, of course, but also initiatives in other important areas, such as recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, and then retaining those who possess the character, experience, talent, and skills needed in months and years to come. The Leadership Advantage: How the Best Companies Are Developing Their Talent to Pave the Way for Future Success Overview

Klein manages this with ease and grace. His Built for Change is a superior read which brings to light unique and tested management tenets that have led companies to success in a variety of sectors and industries. Outstanding in Their Field: How Women Corporate Directors Succeed ReviewElizabeth Ghaffari's work with Outstanding in Their Field informs women and men on the perspective required to govern this most enshrined and trusted place in the corporate universe--the board room. Personal investment, initiative and concern are trademarks of the individuals whose unique paths ultimately lead to this level of responsibility. It is no surprise then that the women whose professional background Ms. Ghaffari shares with us convey a "bring it on" attitude--not only in business affairs, but also in what is essential to the health of communities. Consumers and employees--society, for that matter--gain from the balance that has been achieved in the board room with the increased attendance by women.--Kathline King, AICP, LEED-AP, Los Angeles County

The New Boss: How to Survive the First 100 Days ReviewThis book is ideal for any newly appointed leader. Peter Fischer's approach to Leadership Transitions helps leaders to avoid typical mistakes and pitfalls and to create the foundations for success right from the start.
"The New Boss" is an invaluable on-boarding guidebook and resource for any leader. It gives particular attention to the issues inherent in a variety of challenging on-boarding situations including external hires, international transfers, high potential fast-trackers, change agents and expert / technical types in a leadership role.
Leaders need a strong start, but they also need to carefully manage the pressure for early results and take the time to learn and navigate the new situation. The average tenure for a leadership role is relatively short and mistakes or missteps are more likely early on. A key relationship that gets off to a bad start, for example, can easily cause a setback of many months or even diminish the potential for success in the role. This book begins with the do's and don'ts of successful leadership transitions and is loaded with examples, tools and tips that help leaders to plan, anticipate and manage the issues, challenges and phases of their first 100 Days.
Peter Fischer provides a proven framework and systematic approach to managing leadership transitions and has effectively captured the "soft-side" elements that are missing in other books written on this topic. Additionally, this book offers yet another fresh perspective as Fischer has masterfully captured the challenges and pitfalls in a series of different starting situations that leaders face.
In Part One, Fischer outlines seven essential strategies for on-boarding and making a successful leadership transition. In brief, here they are:
1.MANAGING EXPECTATIONS PROACTIVELY. Actively seek out and explore the expectations of key constituents. Listen for what is being said, as well as what is unspoken or hiden between the lines. All expectations need to be managed, but it's a mistake to think that all expectations need to be met.
2.DEVELOPING THE KEY RELATIONSHIPS. Most changes in leadership run aground on the shoals of key relationships. Develop your power and influence by systematically building an active network of relationships that exists both within and beyond the formal organization chart. Don't let work on your task keep you from investing time in relationships; you will regret it later.
3.CONSTRUCTIVELY ANALYZING THE INITIAL SITUATION. Get a clear picture of the situation by modeling it from different perspectives. Clarify your view of the rules and values that govern how people work and behave, the issues occupying the organization, the facts that determine action, the resources you can build on and the available potential for innovation and change. Avoid the trap of trying to understand everything in great detail.
4.ESTABLISHING A SET OF MOTIVATING GOALS. The idea is to formulate a set of goals that employees will find convincing. To generate a positive climate for change, paint a picture of the future, represent the various stakeholder perspectives, respect the past accomplishments and ensure a balance between change and stability. The big, ugly long-standing problem is the wrong place to start.
5.FOSTERING A POSITIVE CLIMATE FOR CHANGE. Plough the ground before sowing. Show recognition through questions and foster the willingness to adopt other points of view. Rather than asking about problems, prompt people to describe precisely how everything works. Welcome expressions of skepticism; they contain valuable clues to possible obstacles.
6.INITIATING CHANGES EFFECTIVELY. Send strong, clear signals for change being mindful that it's important to communicate at an objective as well as an emotional level. Engage people in the first action steps and adopt a strategy of small wins and large gains to build trust and momentum. No change process runs without encountering obstacles, so be prepared to address them.
7.USING SYMBOLS AND RITUALS. Symbolic language is powerful. Symbols and rituals have the fascinating property of speaking to people in an emotional and therefore much more inclusive way than purely "objective" communication. Use them to communicate basic values, establish standpoints and underline important messages, establish credibility and initiate change.
Part Two of Fischer's book includes seven case studies that depict various leadership transition scenarios, the typical problems encountered and how to effectively deal with them. The following situations are covered: the internal promotion, the external hire, the glorified predecessor, the young, high-potential manager, the long, drawn-out start, the assignment abroad and the headquarters assignment.
Bottom line: "The New Boss" is essential reading for any leader in transition. We provide this book in every On-boarding / Leadership Transition Coaching that we do.Mary Chevalier, Executive Coach

Hot Groups : Seeding Them, Feeding Them, and Using Them to Ignite Your Organization ReviewIn the Preface, the reader is told: "The time is ripe for large, hierarchical, well-ordered organizations to make room for small, egalitarian, disordered hot groups. That is the first thesis of this book....The book's second and ultimately more important thesis is that hot groups are not good just for organizations. They are also good for people. They offer individuals opportunities to find meaning and ennoblement through their work. In our fast and impermanent new organizational world, those who work in organizations -- and that includes most of us -- both expect and deserve such opportunities." Here is how the book is organized:
Part I Hot Groups: What They Are and Why They're Hot
Part IIWho Needs Hot Groups? And Who Seeds New Ones?
Part III How Do Hot Groups Operate?
Part IVAn Optimistic View of What's Ahead
At this point early in my review, I want to stress that a "hot group" should be the logical, indeed inevitable result of a way at looking at organizational renewal. Think of the "hot group" concept as precisely that: a concept which affirms the value of a process by which individual members of any organization (regardless of its size or nature) can effectively collaborate. These members are "task-obsessed and full of passion." They share a style which is "intense, sharply focused, and full bore." Moreover, members of a "hot group" feel engaged in "an important, even vital and personally ennobling mission"; their task is "dominates all other considerations"; and although a "hot group" tends to remain intact only for a relatively short period of time, it is "remembered nostalgically and in considerable detail by its members."
Such groups require effective leadership. In Chapter 6, Lipman-Blumen and Leavitt address this issue, suggesting a number of specific "options" when "hot group" is assembled and then charged with its mission. For example: "To develop a hot, task-obsessed group, think about people before you begin laying out a flow chart. Bring on the people. Getting the task done is not your solo job. It's the whole group's job." The leader is urged to "recruit wild ducks", then help the group to bring the right people in, to get the wrong people out, and with unexpected departures. According to the authors, there are two kinds of c"wars" and "races." In wars, the goal is to destroy the enemy; in races, the goal is not to destroy but to out-perform others. Also, "at least as much", to have members outperform themselves, to exceed their personal best.
In my opinion, this brilliant book makes two immensely important contributions to our understanding of what it takes to achieve superior organizational performance. First, it explains what the members of a "hot group" can themselves accomplish if given the leadership, freedom, and resources needed. Second, it explains what the positive impact of such a group can have on all others within the same organization. Paradoxically, a "hot group" is most effective within an organization that has stability, solid and enlightened management, and sufficient resources to support the group's efforts. That is certainly true of those associated with Xerox PARC, the Manhattan Project, Lockheed's "Skunk Works", and the Disney studios which produced the first full-length animated films.
If an organization is unwilling and/or unable to tolerate a "small, egalitarian, disordered" but NOT disorganized "hot group", it probably has problems which even the hottest of "hot groups" cannot solve.Hot Groups : Seeding Them, Feeding Them, and Using Them to Ignite Your Organization Overview
