The Boss ReviewThis is an incredible book - a perfect one for a long airline flight. You feel like a fly on the wall watching the most infuriating injustices in the workplace. But because we've all had or have heard about dreadful bosses like those featured in this engrossing tale, we know it actually could have happened.
I've recommended it for my university masters students studying organizational politics. It demonstrates very realistically what actually goes on in most organizations. It is a book any office or professional worker will identify with, and is a salutory tale for anyone new to the workforce. Strongly recommended. The Boss Overview

Through the Labyrinth: The Truth About How Women Become Leaders (Center for Public Leadership) ReviewWomen have needed a replacement for the glass ceiling metaphor for quite some time. Drs. Eagly and Carli have given us a wonderful new metaphor, the labyrinth, that better describes the obstacles and realities women face. For years we all have been bombarded with the impediments for women, but no one has offered practical solutions. This book eloquently defines the problem and offers hope for us all. This year all of my close friends, including some men, will receive this book from me for Christmas.Through the Labyrinth: The Truth About How Women Become Leaders (Center for Public Leadership) Overview

Taming The Abrasive Manager: How To End Unnecessary Roughness In The Workplace (The Jossey-Bass Management Series) ReviewHaving worked as a human resource professional in an international corporation for over a decade, I was immensely impressed by this book. Crawshaw tells you exactly how to intervene with abrasive bosses from the management perspective - how to confront them and curb their behavior without getting dragged into endless defensive debates. The book is very easy to read and her approach is extremely effective. Crawshaw takes a difficult subject and gives us hope that we can "tame" these managers sensitively and professionally by following her realistic, practical, and insightful advice. This book should be required reading for all HR types and people who end up managing abrasive managers.

Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant: How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job ReviewI have been a senior manager at a successful printing company for over 50 years. During that time, I have had as many as 100 employees. Even though this engaging book mostly deals with how the employee should handle their bosses, it is also a valuable lesson for managers who want to know how they are irritating their employees. There is also a management section on how to prevent the proliferation of "junior TOTs" among your staff, which gave me ideas, too.
I must admit that when I've been under pressure over the years to meet deadlines, there have been times when I behaved a bit like a tyrant. I have sometimes felt that my staff needed to be scolded like kids, before they did their job correctly. I believed that I had that right, because I paid them. From my point of view, I felt that a boss has every right do so because he (or she) is just that, "the boss." When I finally realized that they were laughing behind my back, I decided to seek advice on "Bossism."
After seeing Ms. Taylor's interview on TV, I decided to buy her book. Boy, what a lesson I learned! I wish I had read it sooner. It made me start to look at my employees from their perspective of me. I've begun to change my behavior and have started appreciating the employee's perspective of working for a bossy boss.Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant: How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job Overview

The Executive Way: Conflict Management in Corporations ReviewWhat makes this book unique is that it tells inside stories of real people in real organizations. The characters and companies allowed Calvin Morrill to observe, interview and document goings on over a lengthy period. During this period, conflicts arose over major issues. Individuals and departments battled over scarce resources within the firm and for individual survival as employees of the company. Morrill analyzed all this in a way that I was easily understood. I felt the human drama and to a large extent got a sense about the endless nature of inside corporate politics.
In this study, you can see how accounting can fight to impose its will as well and other departments such as marketing. My impression was that corporate politics are inevitable, because much is at stake. Morrill showed how internal politics can be draining to the organizational system, yet conflict is inevitable. At some point I felt that the author, deeply understanding of corporate politics, might have the same outlook as a medical doctor of the critically ill. Patients can get better but they can also expire. The drama kept me glued to the end while the journey was sobering.

Pay without Performance: The Unfulfilled Promise of Executive Compensation ReviewIn his letter to Berkshire Hathaway investors in 2004, Warren Buffett wrote:
"In judging whether Corporate America is serious about reforming itself, CEO pay remains the acid test. To date, the results aren't encouraging."PAY WITHOUT PERFORMANCE expands on Buffett's comments and provides a research base to support it. The authors also suggests what needs to be done to effectively deal with this "acid test" of corporate reform.
Lucian Bebchuck is the William J. Friedman and Alicia Townsend Friedman Professor of Law, Economics, and Finance at the Harvard University School of Law. He is also a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. Bebchuck has a doctorate in economics from Harvard and a law degree from Harvard. Jesse Fried is Professor of Law at the Boalt School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley. Prior to his academic career, he practiced tax law in Boston. Fried holds degrees in economics and law from Harvard University.
The authors argue that Sarbanes Oxley reforms may have marginally improved the independence of Boards from CEOs. But Board members are still not dependent enough upon the shareholders they are supposed to represent. This dysfunctionality in the system makes it impossible for Compensation Committees to conduct true "arms length" compensation discussions with CEOs.
The result is a CEO compensation system that tends to verbalize pay for performance without actually achieving it for CEOs.
When CEO pay is uncoupled from performance, Board members seek to avoid having to pay "outrage costs" from the shareholders. One of the ways of avoiding paying "outrage costs" is to make it difficult for the average shareholder to truly understand the level of CEO compensation and how that level is unrelated to corporate performance. The authors call these techniques compensation "camouflage."
The authors are quite clear in describing examples and providing research to support their ideas.
They propose remedies that focus on two themes: tying CEO compensation to real corporate performance and tying Boards to shareholders.
With respect to tying CEO compensation to real corporate performance, they would seek to remove "windfall" and "rising tide" factors from CEO bonus/option payments. Windfall factors involve one-time rises in shareholder value. An example might include a sharp rise in stock value because the CEO makes a decision to downsize or receives a large payment from the successful settlement of a law-suit. Another windfall factor might be allowing accounting for revenue to move from one quarter to the next so that the stock will look like it is rising at a steeper angle. "Rising tide" factors would factor out increases in CEO compensation because an average company is benefiting from average industry growth that impacts all average players. These issues merit serious consideration from Compensation Committees. And Warren Buffet is correct in his assessment that most Boards have thus far failed the "acid test."
With respect to tying Boards to shareholders, the authors would terminate staggered Board elections. They would have the entire Board be up for election at the same time. I am reasonably sure that the authors' remedy here would be worse than the disease they are seeking to cure.
A Board of Directors is a work group that is supposed to be thoughtful and deliberative in nature. Their proposal would make the Board a far more responsive body at the expense of thoughtfulness. To make an analogy, the U.S. Senate is a more effective deliberative body because it is less subject to the passions of the moment. And it is less subject to the passions of the moment because only 33% of its members are up for election every two years. The U.S. House of Representative is far less effective as a deliberative body. And one of the reasons is that all members are accountable to the voters every two years.
Regardless of whether you agree or disagree with their analysis, their key theme deserves consideration: if Boards allow CEO pay to be unrelated to corporate performance, it is important to define the problem correctly. The problem is not about greedy or lazy individuals. The problem is about a system that is not rewarding leaders for doing the right things.
As Warren Buffet has said, fixing that system will be the "acid test" of the free enterprise system in the 21St Century.

Executive Charisma: Six Steps to Mastering the Art of Leadership ReviewDeborah Benton is a serious student of what makes successful business people successful, and her book 'How to Think Like a CEO" reflects the seriousness and depth of her work there.
This book, on the other hand, is a very long hike for a very small picnic. She has essentially re-worked very familiar ground for her into a book that simply doesn't have enough to say to fill its length.
There are times, for example, when while reading, one realizes that the last paragraph has been nothing but semi-connected quotes from people in the large archive of Ms. Benton's interview files. It doesn't really go together and it doesn't really make any new points.
I would strongly recommend 'How to Think Like a CEO' but I would definitely not recommend this book.Executive Charisma: Six Steps to Mastering the Art of Leadership Overview

Toxic Workplace: Managing Toxic Personalities and Their Systems of Power ReviewHello there,
This book is really great in that it tackles the subject of toxic people by using the three-fold strategy - instead of the old and highly unreliable approach: "Just kick this or the other person off the team and thing will improve automatically". That does not work, or at least not well. The author did a great job in explaining that it does take addressing toxic people directly, and it recommends to also deal with the aftermath (usually the confusion and power vacuum) as well as with my favorite topic: Instill a great deal of integrity, honesty, but most of all purpose into your top leadership and thus the whole organization.
I found this book so captivating that I read it on a plane ride from Arizona to Philadelphia.
