Corporate Rise: The X Principles of Extreme Personal Leadership ReviewA few months ago, I was lucky enough to sit next to Dr. Crawford on a flight to SFO. He had just confirmed the date that this book was to be published. I asked him about the book and received the greatest one on one leadership training you could possibly imagine. Dr. Crawford is brilliantly insightful, very funny and his book is definitely worth your time.
The book is built on both his amazing experience and a tremendous amount of research. It's well organized; fast paced, and will provide you with the tools to be a better leader. I recommend it highly.Corporate Rise: The X Principles of Extreme Personal Leadership Overview

1000 CEOs ReviewThe subtitle of 1,000 CEO's proclaims PROVEN STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS FROM THE WORLD'S SMARTEST EXECUTIVES. One can hardly argue the book is a veritable Who's Who of business leaders. This 500 page tome is from Andrew Davidson with introduction from Marshall Goldsmith. This is followed by a 4 page dissertation, "What it takes to be a CEO" by Marjan Bolmeijer.
The book is broken into 10 sections;
The Innovators
The Start-Up Titans
The Motivators
The Organizers
The Strategists
The Rebuilders
The Value Squeezers
The Visionaries
The Controversialists and
The Globalists.
Each section is then broken down into three to six sub-sections. For example, under The Motivators, we find Motivate Success, Talking the Talk, Good Citizens, People Power, Leading the Team and The Diversity Dividend. Each sub-section will then profile five to ten CEO's that fit that category. For example, under the sub-chapter "Motivate Success" we find profiles on Paul Walsh (Diageo), Peter Rose (Expeditors International), Jeffrey Immelt (GE), Galen Watson, Sr (Geo. Weston, Ltd.), Leo Burnett (Leo Burnett Worldwide), Jean Paul Agon (L'Oreal), Charles Merrill (Merrill Lynch) and Alan George Lafley (P&G).
Each of these one page profile packs a ton of information covering a one paragraph biography, leadership style, key strength and their personal "best decision". For example on A.G. Lafley, we learn how he came to sit in the CEO chair of Procter and Gamble, followed by a brief synopsis of his history and accomplishments at P&G. Concluded with Lafley's personal lessons in business and a favorite quote.
Each sub-section contains additional information as well. This one contains a section titled "Masters of Motivation" and includes other CEO's well known for their motivational skills; Charles Edelstenne (Dassault Aviation) Barry Diller (IAC/Interactivecorp), Naguib Sawiris (Orascom), Eric Foss (Pepsi) and Paul Stebbins (World Fuel Services). I'm not sure why this is included as these CEO's are not featured elsewhere in the book, but I suppose it couple spark an interest to learn more about these CEO's.
The layout makes it great for taking a 5-minute break and reading a tidbit about a top business leader. The book is packed with a wealth of information and there truly is something here for everyone.

Ask Papa Jack:: Wisdom of the World's Oldest CEO ReviewI had the good fortune to visit Papa Jack several times at the Rockmount store in Denver. What a sweet man. Steve Weil has written an amazing book about his grandfather, and the family, that gives the reader a much more in-depth look at Papa Jack's life and how Rockmount began. It's interesting, funny, poignant, and full of stories on how life progressed in the Weil family. Read the book, go to the Rockmount store in Denver, say hello to the folks, buy a shirt, and wear it with pride. You'll never regret it. Asia's Banking CEOs: The Future of Finance in Asia ReviewThis is an important and timely book. In writing about the leaders at Asia's largest and most important financial institutions, Peter Hoflich has chronicled not only the current state of banking in Asia, but also how these institutions survived the Asian financial crisis and where they are going, in bringing banking services to the some of the world's largest emerging consumer markets.
As US and UK banks are crumbling around us, the tales that the CEOs in this book have lived to tell are especially important. Japan's Shinsei emerged from the former Long-Term Credit Bank after a private equity buyout; Thai banks implemented painful credit controls; Indonesian banks are only now recovering, after a round of mergers.
The range of institutions and personalities covered in this book is breathtaking. Banks include China's ICBC which raised $22 billion in its IPO to India's HDFC that is developing products for all categories of consumers, from the super wealthy to the 700 million unbanked people in the country. Internet-only banks, foreign banks jostling for position among the local domestic giants, family owned and nationalized banks are also featured. One thing's for sure -- these men are women are determining the direction of economies in Asia through the banking services they are developing. They discuss their travails and triumphs in this book.
Hoflich's coverage of Japanese and Korean financial institutions is particularly strong. Certain markets, like Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam, are, unfortunately, not covered. But his fluency on issues, easy writing style and wit makes this book an enjoyable read. A must for anyone interested in banking.Asia's Banking CEOs: The Future of Finance in Asia Overview

Jack Welch Speaks: Wit and Wisdom from the World's Greatest Business Leader ReviewJack Welch Speaks is a quick glimpse into the mind of an outstanding manager and leader. Don't expect to be drawn in by complex philosophies and diagrams. You wont find "covey-like" principles on time management or introspective looks at goal setting principles. What you will find is short quotes and stories from Welch that gives you a taste of his straight forward, reality-check management style. His basic principles: An energized vision, create the same level of competition within departments and managers as there is in the global market, communicate honestly and frankly with the workforce, find ways to develop new ideas and of course, be the best or be gone!Jack Welch Speaks: Wit and Wisdom from the World's Greatest Business Leader Overview

Leading at the Speed of Growth: Journey from Entrepreneur to CEO (Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership) ReviewCommentary, August, 2001. This is an important book for several audiences. First, it should help entrepreneurs understand the skills and experience that are required to move from start up, or as the authors put it, from "initial growth," through "rapid growth," and finally into "continuous growth" phases. Thoughtful entrepreneurs will ask of themselves: "Do I have those shills - if not, what must I do to gain them? And, do I have what it takes to do so?" If they are truly honest with themselves, a good number will realize that it will take different individuals with different skills and experience to lead their creation through these phases, and act accordingly.
The second group range from board directors, especially if venture capitalists are among them, and trusted personal advisors, especially if the entrepreneur does not have a true board comprised of some seasoned executives or consultants with requisite experience. These are the individuals who are in the best position to make these kind of judgments.
Many years ago, I was in the office of the head of one of the more successful venture capital firms in Boston...let's call him Mr. D. The purpose of our meeting was to discuss a possible collaboration with one of his ventures. As the discussion unfolded, it was clear that his attention was elsewhere, so I asked him if this was the case. He seemed relieved, and emotionally stated that he had just concluded a phone conversation with the outside directors of a promising venture in which he was the lead investor. The venture, with annual revenues over $20 million, was pioneering a new, important technological field. The outside directors were aware of the leadership problems, and were not surprised that Mr. D. was recommending the removal of the founder and his replacement an individual Mr. D. believed had the skills, experience, and desire to lead the company well into the rapid growth phase profitably. This was in spite of Mr. D's several frank one-on-one discussions with the firm's founder that revolved around his bringing in a new CEO, thereby permitting the founder to concentrate on the R&D efforts that were so essential for success. The founder refused to relinquish total control of his baby.
The founder's loss represented a serious setback for the investors, but one if not taken put the venture at extreme risk. It took several years before the company got back on its rapid growth phase while retaining its leadership position in its markets.
Would the entrepreneur have acted differently if he had read Catlin & Matthews' book with its real life examples? I can't tell, but he might have accepted his new role...after all, it would have been in his own self-interest - he owned about 30% of the stock.
Another example. I was on the board of a company facing the same kind of problem. The company had grown from $800,000 in revenues to somewhat over $5 million in 15 months. The CEO confided in me that the joy of building his creation was being displaced by too many operating details. First he brought in a solid COO, but soon thereafter asked us the board to find his replacement. He gave us enough time to do this as we worked out ways we could collaborate with him in the near future.
Similar stories repeated time and time again. Catlin & Matthews offer constructive advise to help entrepreneurs make it through their growth phases - or to counsel them to face reality. Bravo, Katherine and Jana; may your book gain widespread use.
Catlin & Matthews at least spell out for entrepreneurs the nature of the game they are in. To ignore their advice seems, to me, to be foolhardy.Leading at the Speed of Growth: Journey from Entrepreneur to CEO (Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership) Overview

Bury My Heart at Conference Room B: The Unbeatable Impact of Truly Committed Managers ReviewThis book captures what so many hearts struggle to express. I know this content can have a profound impact on the leadership ethos of large corporations, but I've also been challenged to bring it to life in the small space I inhabit. Putting family and integrity at the top of the list with my clients, employees, family and friends is a tough challenge. I've been rejuvenated to keep on trying by this pragmatic, sarcastic, bad boy/good guy book.
Rare is a book that is both inspirational and practical. This one is. It goes on my leadership shelf next to The Power Principle, Principle-Centered Leadership, A Leader's Legacy and The Making of A Leader. Select company. Well-deserved.

Taming The Abrasive Manager: How To End Unnecessary Roughness In The Workplace (The Jossey-Bass Management Series) ReviewHaving worked as a human resource professional in an international corporation for over a decade, I was immensely impressed by this book. Crawshaw tells you exactly how to intervene with abrasive bosses from the management perspective - how to confront them and curb their behavior without getting dragged into endless defensive debates. The book is very easy to read and her approach is extremely effective. Crawshaw takes a difficult subject and gives us hope that we can "tame" these managers sensitively and professionally by following her realistic, practical, and insightful advice. This book should be required reading for all HR types and people who end up managing abrasive managers.

CEO Material: How to Be a Leader in Any Organization ReviewThis book from Debra Benton, the New York Times Best Seller author, does a fascinating job of telling us what a CEO is supposed to be, and what is meant by leadership.
Debra is the premier world class executive coach and educator who has created a monumental and real basis to judge CEOs. Her trademark extensive research and intensive fact finding interviews with CEOs and others, insight, and clear and easy to understand writing has made a masterpiece that out does her own previous work.
In my opinion, we are all CEOs of our own lives, therefore CEOs of our work and career. This book helps us regardless of where we stand in the corporate organization charts. It shows us the way up in clear and concise steps. This book empowers us to understand what it is to be a CEO and how to lead at any level of the organization.
You do not have to be a CEO to benefit from this book. This book is written for all of us who are working.
In view of all the negative images of CEOs broadcast in media in 2008-2009, this is a timely and productive insight to tell us what is right and what is not right. It helps CEOs understand and implement highest levels of integrity and profitability as two interdependent processes and procedures.
In fact, the entire media is telling us what a CEO and leadership at any level of organization is not supposed to be. This book single-handedly tells us how to be an outstanding CEO, and more importantly, how to lead. As a senior management consultant in Silicon Valley, CA I found the material in this book to be the authoritative confidence builder that many CEOs, leaders, management, and workers have been looking for to find better success in the work place.

How to Become CEO: The Rules for Rising to the Top of Any Organization ReviewJeffrey Fox has written a book that will please some people immensely, but intensely annoy others. "How to become a CEO" is a short easy to read book. Each chapter is a two-page piece of advice, "crisp, blunt, frank, generally ... judgmental" and very, very easy to digest. I read book in less than half an hour.
Some of the seventy-five pieces of advice are cynical, "Always take the job that offers the most money", and "Make allies of your peers subordinates". Some are puritanical "Don't have a drink with the gang" and "Don't smoke". Some are eccentric "Send hand written notes", and "Go to the library one day a month". And some are good emotional intelligence "Never write a nasty memo" and "Live for today, plan for tomorrow, forget yesterday".
You probably won't agree with all of them, nor agree that all of them are profound. Yet some may strike a cord, or remind you of something you really know but no longer practice. They are written in a style which will appeal to some, but not all. What one might call a "popular magazine type style".
If this is the sort of book you like, then you will like this sort of book. Otherwise, for the sake of your blood pressure, I suggest that you read something else. How to Become CEO: The Rules for Rising to the Top of Any Organization Overview

Code of the Executive ReviewIn ancient times, Samurai warriors lived by a rigid code known as Bushido. At the heart of this "code of life" lie forty-seven ancient principles. In his stellar book "The Code of the Executive", Don Schminke has rebirthed these ancient principles and codes, and the practice of Bushido.
"The Code of the Executive" contains ninety-eight pages of ancient text used by the Samurai warriors on a daily basis as they lived and fought. This text has been updated for use by executive managers in the 21st Century. In its entirety, this small book contains the entire code for successful leadership. Mr. Schminke offers these essential tools of life and leadership to managers throughout the world in the conferences that he conducts, now the philosophy is available to everyone in book form.
There is a myriad of books available to the business manager searching for enlightenment, interested in improving his skills, or satisfying a thirst for knowledge. Over the years I have read many of them. Unfortunately, virtually no page did I turn contain the philosophy essential to life. Not one page spoke of the foundation that we must establish before we can be successful in life. In fact, these books that I read spoke of business success as a tangibility to be acquired. Good managers do not become good managers with out a foundation. Executives can not effectively steer their organizations without Honor and Respect, without Integrity or Bravery. The principles necessary for success are not found, they are learned, they must be understood and practiced. The journey toward true leadership is profound and "The Code of the Executive" is the 21st Century Guide.
As a developing manager my journey continues. My own change, development, and growth can be traced. Mr. Schminke's book provided me with a paradigm shift of focus. My understanding of Role and Responsibility drastically changed as the Bushido introduced to me the concept of Death, and how all of the mighty principles are tightly woven around its strength. This book teaches that success is not found, the path to success cannot be memorized, and success cannot be taught. Business success coincides with life success. "The Code of the Executive" offers forty-seven principles of self fulfillment that must be learned, understood, and practiced.
Even though this book speaks in terms of the executive, it is not for a limited audience. The sooner that this book is read and the journey toward fulfillment begins the sooner that change and understanding will be realized. This journey is long and difficult. Once it begins, these principles will build the person who becomes the successful leader in life and business. I highly recommend "The Code of the Executive" as essential text for leadership training and development in all aspects of life. Students in high school or collage may never take a class as powerful as this self-study.Code of the Executive Overview

Derailed: Five Lessons Learned from Catastrophic Failures of Leadership (NelsonFree) ReviewAs a pastor, I appreciate reading good books on developing and maintaining healthy leadership. I believe such books help me in the important task of leading my congregation on a relational human level while doing my main work of shepherding them in Christ on a spiritual level. "Derailed" has found a spot on my shelf of valuable leadership books.
In "Derailed" Tim Irwin has brought a compelling format to a well-known topic. There is no doubt that leadership books are full of exhortations to character as being the bedrock of leadership, but Tim's format of first profiling six highly visible leadership failures brings a new, gritty twist to the subject. The profiles served as a fun-house mirror, enabling me to see my own failures magnified to a grotesque level. The stories allowed me to see exactly how such failures cause a leadership derailment even before I got to the main content of the book.As such, Tim's profiling in the first half of the book serves the second half (where he blends information with personal application) exceptionally well.
But without a doubt, it's the second half of the book where this book earned its spot on my shelf. Tim's understanding of the dimensions of character (authenticity, self-management, humility, and courage) bring what is normally a vague, ethereal quality down into measurable, quantifiable bedrock that a leader can actually stand on. And then, when he finishes up the book with simple instructions on developing specific "heart habits" in order to avoid leadership derailing, he puts that all-important factor of personal application to good and practical use.
All in all, Tim Irwin has a solid and readable leadership book in "Derailed". I recommend it.Derailed: Five Lessons Learned from Catastrophic Failures of Leadership (NelsonFree) Overview

The CEO and the Monk: One Company's Journey to Profit and Purpose ReviewFinally, good news from inside the Corporate World! As the media focus our attention on corporate wrongdoing, the show trials of the rich and powerful, stratospheric salaries of greedy CEOs, and the "unaccountability" of managers and Wall Streeters comes a heartwarming and inspiration story of a Fortune 500 company with a soul.
The CEO and the Monk is the inside story of Keyspan's dramatic growth over the past decade, of its hands-on CEO, of the difficulties encountered as the "family" of a 100-year old, conservative utility absorbs the shocks of mergers and acquisitions and grows from $1 billion to $6 billion in revenues, tripling its workforce. All the while maintaining a clear focus on doing the right thing...and blowing the numbers out of the water while not losing its soul, as one financial analyst observed.
Bob Catell, Chairman of Keyspan, one of the nation's leading energy providers, is the CEO in the title. He's a career employee whose soft-spoken style and ready smile hide the tough inner man who created a whole new company amidst the chaos of de-regulation. Tough, smart, caring and candid about what it took to achieve his vision, he points out this was the opposite of the "asset-lite" and high-flying Enron of the 1990s. Same industry, similar starting point, different leaders...much different results.
Kenny Moore was a real monk who after 15 years left cloistered life in the monastery to rediscover himself and pursue a career in the corporate world. Despite the odds of succeeding in Corporate America - no MBA, no useful business experience, and a serious bout with life-threatening cancer and then a heart attack - Kenny signed on in HR and rose to be Corporate Ombudsman at Keyspan. He became the conscience of the company, but not without struggle and self-doubt. He took risks along the way - even brashly staging a mock funeral for key employees as the old Brooklyn Union "died" and the new Keyspan was a-borning.
About the book: This a fast, enjoyable read, with three authors' voices leading you through the pages, with informative and lively stories about corporate and personal success behind the scenes. These are told in the first person by the CEO, Bob Catell, and the Monk, Kenny Moore. There's an interesting narrative thread to guide the reader as well, presented by the third story-teller, the skilled business writer Glenn Rifkin, a former New York Times reporter. This is a warts-and-all tale and belongs on the reading list for senior managers - and those who plan to be CEO one day.

The Secrets of CEOs: 150 Global Chief Executives Lift the Lid on Business, Life and Leadership ReviewFamous chief executive officers (CEOs) have an aura of invincibility. But scandals and failures have engulfed many infamous CEOs who ultimately lost their powerful jobs. And avoiding risk is no guarantee of top-job security. Many companies want their CEOs to serve as agents of change, not caretakers. How do successful CEOs stay on top? The answer depends on their style of leadership. Today, most chief executives are superb managers or bold entrepreneurs. Others are visionaries or astute diplomats. To find out what motivates CEOs and how they think about leadership, Steve Tappin and Andrew Cave conducted comprehensive interviews with 150 chief executives and compiled their findings in this book. getAbstract recommends their work to anyone who wants to know how CEOs think and act.The Secrets of CEOs: 150 Global Chief Executives Lift the Lid on Business, Life and Leadership Overview

Organized for Success : Top Executives and CEOs Reveal the Organizing Principles That Helped Them Reach the Top ReviewOverall, a disappointing book with very little original material and with really only 2 well supported principles: (1) Get an assistant to do most of your organizing and (2) How you organize depends on your own personal style. The author's material on how to use an assistant to implement organization principles may be of value to those who actually have one, but very little of it is applicable to those who don't. And the book jumps all over the place in recommending tips and tricks, so I did not find any convergence to very many "principles." I agree, organization can be very personal, but the author seems to try to capture so many individual techniques, that to say there are organizing principles here is very much a stretch.
If you really are serious about some good solid principles with beginning to end techniques to organization, I would recommend David Allen's book Getting Things Done. If you simply want a cursory overview of many existing organizing tips and tricks, than half this book may be of value. And if you do indeed have an assistant and want to utilize him/her better, then the other half is for you. Otherwise, little or nothing new here to read.
