CONNECT: Building Success Through People, Purpose, and Performance (Best Practices) ReviewI absolutely love the book CONNECT! Keith has hit another home run. When we think about success we minimize the importance of attitude. It is truly clever how the authors used this powerful acronym to help us think about what we can do to get to the next level. The most beneficial chapter for me was "Open up to Opportunities". It helped me to think of ways that I can connect to opportunities and be resourceful. The metaphor of the pond shed light on the need to constantly update the water in our lives! I love the quick and life changing steps and business examples (IBM and Verizon, etc.) If they can open up to opportunity so can I. Thanks Keith and Hattie for sharing your wealth of knowledge. It is time we learned the power of CONECT!CONNECT: Building Success Through People, Purpose, and Performance (Best Practices) Overview

The Way of the Shepherd: 7 Ancient Secrets to Managing Productive People ReviewMore than just another management book, The Way of the Shepherd relates sound people management practices to shepherding. Basically it takes seven of the most important principles of shepherding and relates them to managing productive people who want to work for you. The seven principles are each set in their own chapter and covered in detail. of Know the Condition of Your Flock, Discover the Shape of Your Sheep, Help Your Sheep Identify with You, Make Your Pasture a Safe Place, The Staff of Direction, The Rod of Correction, The Heart of the Shepherd.
Basically by explaining various important aspects of good shepherding the authors provide solid object lessons in managing people. Each chapter ends with a short synopsis of the major points. There is a lot of wisdom concentrated in these seven principles and I found myself printing them out on a small card that I can carry with me. The Way of the Shepherd is a highly recommended purchase and can be applied to many different kings of "flocks" - family, church, service groups, or any other group you care about. The Way of the Shepherd: 7 Ancient Secrets to Managing Productive People Overview

Everything Counts: 52 Remarkable Ways to Inspire Excellence and Drive Results ReviewAs an entrepreneur, I read at least 5 books a month on business, health and motivation. What I really like about Gary's book is he looks at 3 areas of achievement: professional, personal and universal. Each theme within these categories is not hard to grasp, for example: Consistency. If you are not consistent in your habits and thoughts, how do expect to get consistent results? He really makes you think at a very self-critical level that is important if you ever want to implement changes that will produce different results. He also gives very good practical examples of individuals and companies that embrace excellence.
The chapters are not long and are easy to digest (which I personally, like). They will help you examine yourself and your character and evaluate what you can be doing better. Fear of change is a paralyzing factor that limits the individual's ability to achieve desired results. Without a roadmap of how to implement positive change into your life, most people are satisfied with mediocre results. "Everything Counts" can help you recognize your strengths and weaknesses so that you can improve the areas that are holding you back and let go of bad habits that no longer serve you.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to implement positive change into their business and personal life. Well done.Everything Counts: 52 Remarkable Ways to Inspire Excellence and Drive Results Overview

Bury My Heart at Conference Room B: The Unbeatable Impact of Truly Committed Managers ReviewThis book captures what so many hearts struggle to express. I know this content can have a profound impact on the leadership ethos of large corporations, but I've also been challenged to bring it to life in the small space I inhabit. Putting family and integrity at the top of the list with my clients, employees, family and friends is a tough challenge. I've been rejuvenated to keep on trying by this pragmatic, sarcastic, bad boy/good guy book.
Rare is a book that is both inspirational and practical. This one is. It goes on my leadership shelf next to The Power Principle, Principle-Centered Leadership, A Leader's Legacy and The Making of A Leader. Select company. Well-deserved.
Thanks, Stan.Bury My Heart at Conference Room B: The Unbeatable Impact of Truly Committed Managers Overview

EntreLeadership: 20 Years of Practical Business Wisdom from the Trenches ReviewEven though I'm not a businessman, I'm very interested in leadership and have read a lot of works on leadership. I've also learned so much from Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University that I thought surely Dave's newest work, "EntreLeadership" would be worth my money.
"EntreLeadership," is a good book on leadership in business. But I don't feel it's a great one. He has, as always, a lot of good practical knowledge that he's willing to share with us. But it's usually not something I haven't read elsewhere in books on leadership or related literature. So, yes, the book's probably worth buying, but it didn't seem to be as excellent in its genre as is Dave's "Financial Peace." There is a lot of excellent basic material here on leadership, goals, organization, working with people, etc. But it's not especially original or compelling. And it's not very in-depth, largely because Dave deals with so many topics all in one book. Still, "EntreLeadership" is a good, one-stop place for good, basic advice on many subjects related to leadership and business. Almost everyone will find something of value in it, especially businessmen looking for a proven, practical vision with integrity.
What Dave shares in this book is his "playbook" for business success, divided up into 15 topics.
Dave sets out first to define what an "EntreLeader" is. It's kind of an ugly word, but Dave feels that what he wanted in business from himself and others was people who had the good characteristics of both leaders and entrepreneurs. So what is an EntreLeader? I'm glad you asked! According to Dave, they're people who can be:
Passionately serving
Mavericks who have integrity
Disciplined risk takers
Courageous while humble
Motivated visionaries
Driven while loyal
Influential learners
Dave concludes Chapter 1 by discussing some of the characteristics of leaders, such as power, the need to be servants, and passion. There's some good stuff here, but it's not really original or uniquely compelling.
In Chapter 2, Dave walks us from Dreams to Visions to Mission Statements and Goals. Again, there's good wisdom here, but it's not really unique, and he doesn't spend a lot of time on each. He spends the most time on goals (I won't rehearse what he says here), and it's good material that almost anyone will benefit from. But once again, it's not groundbreaking or original stuff you can't get elsewhere.
Chapter 3 deals with time management and organization. This is something I'm naturally good enough at but not nearly as good as I ought to be. So I learned some new tricks in this chapter - or, more accurately - was motivated to make a better effort to apply what I already know.
The rest of the chapters follow suit in giving good and even excellent advice, but possibly material you've heard before. I have less experience with business than with leading or dreaming, so I can't speak as specifically to the parts that deal specifically with business (such as Chapters 7, 13, and 14). But from what I can tell, they're good solid material for running a business, if that's what I did. I particularly like the chapter on selling (such as Chapters 7, 8, 11, and 12) because in these chapters Dave shows how business can be done with integrity. I like as well the way that throughout he demonstrates a genuine interest in the people who work for him (this especially came out in a touching story in Chapter 7 about someone Dave hired who couldn't live off the salary he could afford to pay her) and those he is serving. These chapters, dealing with people, are probably his strongest chapters because he highlights the need to serve the people around you and not exalt yourself at their expense.
A lot of what Dave says applies, even if you're not in business. For example, any leader can benefit from Dave's philosophy in Chapter 11 that as leaders we must put people first and that the way to judge this is by the Golden Rule. It's good advice to remember, as he teaches in Chapter 12, that we should remember to recognize people. I know that personally, I thrive on appropriate and deserved recognition. In Chapter 12, Dave provides a list of various ways we can actually do this for others. Most of these, such as casting a vision, storytelling, passion, and example, are ways of recognizing others that you could use outside of business, too.
There's much more I could say, but by now you've gotten an idea of the value of the book.
The remainder of the book is organized this way (I'm giving the gist of each chapter, and not the fancy titles):
Chapter 4 - Making Decisions
Chapter 5 - Great Marketing
Chapter 6 - Launching Your Dream
Chapter 7 - Hiring and Firing
Chapter 8 - Selling by Serving
Chapter 9 - Financial Peace for Business
Chapter 10 - Great Communication and Great Companies
Chapter 11 - People Matter Most
Chapter 12 - Recognizing and Inspiring Employees
Chapter 13 - Contracts, Vendors, and Collections
Chapter 14 - Compensation Plans
Chapter 15 - Delegating
I recommend "EntreLeadership" as a good, big picture, book that will help leaders and businessman lead and innovate with greater integrity and skill.

What Made jack welch JACK WELCH: How Ordinary People Become Extraordinary Leaders ReviewStephen Baum's leadership book, "What Made jack welch into JACK WELCH: How Ordinary People become Extraordinary Leaders," is this year's business book masterpiece. I regularly read a sampling from the hundreds of business success books published each year. And, in this case, Baum's work is missing the usual after-the-fact braggadocio, and instead is loaded of insight, introspection and reflection, all crafted in useful advice for the aspiring leader.
As I read Baum's work, per his advice to begin my own inventory, I took laptop to lap, instead of pen to hand, and began making notes and holding my own personal introspection sessions related to each chapter. It took me five times longer to read Baum's work than any business book I have read in years as I found myself stopping over and over to add a note here and there about my experiences, as I inventoried my own archetypal shaping experiences.
While I tired of the phrase "swimming over your head" I couldn't offer a more appropriate phrase to viscerally describe the experience of trying new experiences in preparation for assuming the mantel of leadership. I also must commend Baum for the depth of his sourcing from his own interviews, written texts of successful leaders, and confidential conversations from his professional network. This deep insight is successful in reinforcing Baum's theories and concepts in each case. In the personal gut searching spirit of James Lipton's, "Inside the Actors' Studio," this book works.
Baum's text discusses a wide range of shaping experiences he calls "archetypal shaping experiences," helps identify "empty suits" in leadership positions, goes into serious depth about skills and attributes critical to leadership including: action orientation, ethics, managed risk taking, developing confidence, and acting decisively. He concludes the book with two powerful capstone chapters.
Chapter 7 on engaging and inspiring team members by using "signal acts" and authenticity is very thought provoking. He gives some great examples and discusses the concept of parenting. One nit I would pick with Baum is his light treatment or warning around making sure not to treat workers as small children in the family. In my varied career, I have seen many executives bring their parenting skills into the workplace and then complain about how immature their workers are, how they need too much direction and guidance, all the while treating their workers like five-year olds. It would be nice to see how parenting works well and a comparison of when if works to the detriment of an organization. Baum might summarize, we want loyal families, but we also want them to grow up and leave the nest for their own success.
Baum concludes with Chapter 8 on finding a career guide or mentor, which he calls "guardian angels." He discusses the attributes of these angels who ask tough but gentle questions, offer gentle and not so gentle advice, get you to look into the mirror and help shape your character. Baum offers some heartfelt examples of how mentors shaped the successful career launches of some of his interviewees. And last but certainly not least, Baum and his interviewees take time and print to herald the importance of angels at the bottom of the organization, who roll up their sleeves, get the job done, and won't hide or obscure the truth. As I read this chapter concluding the book, it became obvious that Baum has elegantly packaged his experiences as a coach and executive advisor along with his interviewees into an elegant work, and as such has become a mentor to me, and could be a mentor to you through the pages of his book. What a gift!
Baum's text ranks with the best of the best in terms of leadership guidance, inspiration and introspection. As an author, Stephen Baum and his collaborator Dave Conti join the hallowed ranks of Peter F. Drucker (Management), Warren Bennis (The Leadership Advantage), Stephen Covey (7 Habits), Tom Peters (In Search of...), and Peter M. Senge (The 5th Discipline).
If you are in the honored position of mentoring an up and coming leader, I can think of no better holiday gift for the upcoming season than Baum's book. And even if you just see a glimmer of leadership hidden in one of your subordinates or peers, I can think of nothing better than Baum's book as a lever to encourage them in a deep examination of their own soul and capacity to step into a stronger leadership position.
I have a good friend and mentor who taught me the importance of self-reflection and of taking the effort to thank those individuals that have had a great influence on your life and success. I am proud to add Stephen Baum to that list of my great influencers and to thank him for his new book. I believe you will do the same.
One final note, in my professional life I have been exposed to quite a few books from the peer groups and Chairs of Vistage, (formerly TEC), and for once am relieved to see that I was not force fed the value of their groups, no slam against Vistage, I believe whole heartedly in their mission, I just don't like getting force fed the allegories and appreciate the solid research and balance Baum brings to his work while sharing acknowledgment to the contributions of his peer group of CEOs.

The Nonprofit Board Answer Book: A Practical Guide for Board Members and Chief Executives Review
I really liked this book a lot. It includes sound theory and is practical. And it was an easy read. It has 80 chapters broken into 7 sections as follows:
1. Basic board functions (1-12)
2. Board structure (13-22)
3. Selection and development of board members (23-36)
4. Board and committee meetings (37-46
5. The board's role as a fiduciary (47-58)
6. Board-staff relations (59-70)
7. Organizational change (71-80)
Each "chapter" ended with suggested action steps. And I found them to be very informative. It was very well written, but I thought there were too many chapters. I felt kind of like I was reading an online blog.
This is a VERY practical guide or handbook for board members and executives of nonprofit organizations. It is totally consistent with how things at well-run nonprofits work and/or should work. If you are responsible for running a nonprofit organization and and want to know how to do things the right way, then get a copy of this book and take advantage of what it has to offer. It will definitely prove to be helpful unless you are already an expert on the subject matter. 5 stars! The Nonprofit Board Answer Book: A Practical Guide for Board Members and Chief Executives Overview

Nonprofit Board Answer Book: Practical Guidelines for Board Members and Chief Executives ReviewThis is a must-have book for nonprofit senior staffs as well as for volunteer board members who aspire to leadership and stewardship of the organizations they serve. It definitely lives up to the promise of the assertion on the book jacket that the authors, "...who collectively have more than 70 years of experience as chief executives, board members, and facilitators in the training of more than 20,000 board members in 20 countries..."
The book is comprised of 37 short chapters (typically 3-6 pages each) in five sections, designed to address all aspects of board service and board/staff issues. Each chapter provides facts, opinions, tools, and a few "suggested action steps" to help a board address the issue or situation presented in the chapter.
In general, the authors reference John Carver as a good resource for the theory and practice of nonprofit governance, but they don't make Carver the precise and proscriptive recipe that some adherents do. They admit the possibility that other techniques and structures can work well for certain organizations, while "sticking to their guns" in presenting their experiences and insights as having inherent value for most nonprofits.
I was especially impressed by the distinction made between the role of the board and the role of board members. Many policy governance disputes stem from a misunderstanding that, somehow, all board members should have the same responsibilities and be treated interchangeably.
I would have liked to see a clearer treatment of the issue of board diversity; interestingly, the authors seem to agree, admitting that it's a very difficult subject to address. Many board "diversity" programs focus on narrowly-defined "diversity" and run the danger of leading to "tokenism," according to the authors.
The charts and checklists that supplement the text are simple and effective. They're easy for readers to re-create and use in their own organizations.
The book even admits of the possibility that nonprofits can (and sometimes should) dissolve and disband, and provides strategies for helping board, staff, and community understand, accept, and even support the natural cycle of life as it applies to organizations. It's an important message and not a negative one.
Although originally published in December, 1997, it has already had three printings as of August, 1999. With 15 million volunteer board members in the U.S. alone, the publishers could run through many more printings.Nonprofit Board Answer Book: Practical Guidelines for Board Members and Chief Executives Overview

Reagan on Leadership: Executive Lessons from the Great Communicator (Reagan Centennial Edition) ReviewPresident Reagan has always been a hero of mine. At the age of 8, I became intoxicated with politics in large part because of the 1980 Presidental campaign. As a Canadian, I watched this incredible leader from a little farther away then an Amercian, but came away impressed. I therefore began to read or watch anything I could find on President Reagan. The problem was all the information I gathered failed to answer the key question for me: how did Reagan lead? Much material is available on what he did, but I never received the practical tools I was looking for. Reagan on Leadership clearly and concisely describes his techniques. Strock reached deep into Reagan's tool box and paved the road for how I can apply these tools to my life. It is the only book or article I have read that answers the question I have asking about Reagan for years: not what did he do, but rather how did he it.Reagan on Leadership: Executive Lessons from the Great Communicator (Reagan Centennial Edition) Overview

The New Articulate Executive: Look, Act and Sound Like a Leader ReviewUntil this book came out, it was really hard to imagine how Granville Toogood, or Granny, as he is known to his friends, colleagues and clients, could have improved on his original version of The Articulate Executive. But, now comes the NEW Articulate Executive, which IS new, interesting, sensible, insightful, and even more practical than its predecessor. It is also vintage Granville Toogood.
Here's a special tip. Skip right to page 215 and take The Articulate Executive Quiz. It's a very interesting self analysis. The quiz is your systematic roadmap to help maximize Granny's wisdom. It will also help you bring into focus your vision of yourself, how to articulate it and achieve it. Great leaders are articulate leaders. Visionary leaders can articulate their vision. The executives of tomorrow can articulate where we are headed. If you have something to say that matters, this us your deskibook.

Perks and Parachutes: Negotiating Your Best Possible Employment Deal, from Salary and Bonus to Benefits and Protection ReviewThis is a good clear overall glimpse of the battleground of executive compensation strategies and guidlines. For most executives looking for some strategies, this will be helpful reading. For the CEO/Pres candidate or company looking to construct an complex package this helps but falls slightly short of being able to put the most cutting edge deal together. I recommend this book. It seems to be the best all around one available. It must, however, be augmented with executive compensation trend reports from consulting groups. Required for the library of anyone dealing daily within the business of HR or recruiting. A must for the executive candidate looking to negotiate his own package.Perks and Parachutes: Negotiating Your Best Possible Employment Deal, from Salary and Bonus to Benefits and Protection Overview
