Handbook for Developing Emotional and Social Intelligence: Best Practices, Case Studies, and Strategies ReviewI want to highly recommend this book to anyone interested in developing and improving EI among their leaders and employees.
The editors of this book have selected individuals who are well known within the U.S. and internationally to write articles about emotional intelligence and how to improve it.
There are four sections to the book: 1) coaching and developing leaders; 2) teams and organizational cultures; 3) multiple perspectives assessments and their value; and 4) education leadership and students. As one who specializes in consulting and conducting research on EI assessments and EI in higher education, I also found all sections of the equally valuable for me and my associates.
One of the surprises in the book was the growth EI consulting in India and South Africa. The leadership in these nations are viewing EI as one of the ways to enhance human capital among their present and future leaders.
I was especially impressed by the articles on when enhanced EI derails leaders, advanced EI instrument interpretation, and the EI as it is associated with Catastrophic Leadership Failure {TM). In addition, the chapter on using both MBTI and EI together as was the chapter that discussed using both the EQ-i and MSCEIT(R). The use of multiple measurements strengthens the consultants capacity to help individuals and organization.
Like many edited books, there the quality of writing varies from average to excellent.
In conclusion, this book makes a valuable contribution to the science of developing higher levels of EI in leaders, employees, students, and organizations. Buy it!Handbook for Developing Emotional and Social Intelligence: Best Practices, Case Studies, and Strategies Overview

The Management Team Handbook: Five Key Strategies for Maximizing Group Performance (Jossey-Bass Business & Management) ReviewI would use this book if I were forming a new management team.
It provides an efficient, structured process for talking about real business issues over a period of weeks rather than hours. It easily be integrated into regular staff meetings or retreats. An executive or consultant could modify as needed to suit the situation.
I attended a seminar led by the author when the book first came out, and she knows her stuff. The Management Team Handbook: Five Key Strategies for Maximizing Group Performance (Jossey-Bass Business & Management) Overview

The Five Temptations of a CEO, 10th Anniversary Edition: A Leadership Fable (J-B Lencioni Series) ReviewThe 2 stars is the average I give to all the fable books written by Patrick.
The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: 5 stars
Obviously, it is the best one. (you can see it from the sales record in Amazon). It was the first Patrick's book I read. I have finished reading the whole book in one setting and couldn't wait and jump to look for his other books. The book has a reasonable length, setting up a bit simplified, but not over-simplified, and still reasonable fable-like setting to illustrate all important team dysfunctions and team building skills. The whole book is tight and coherent and an easy but enlightening read. Highly recommended! Death by Meeting: A Leadership Fable 4 stars
It is a good one but not as great as the five team dysfunctions. A very good explanation of all kinds of meetings and how to use each of them. I recommend you buy one, read it and keep it as a reference. One drawback is the author tried to spicy up the book so one of the main characters will occassionally scream out some rude comments if he didn't take his pills. I never work with such an unusual person and I prefer less dramatic in a management fable. (not something like in "Desperate Housewife", the neighbor besides you was a serial killer and the housewife across the street did her gardener and used her Chinese maid to bear her baby.)
I should have stopped here and never rush to read his other books.. The Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive: 2 stars
This is the one made me begin to feel betrayed. If the five dysfunctions have been crafted for months, this one seems to be done within weeks. The fable setting needs more polishing works. Although the four obsessions have been presented with reasonable clariy, reading this book makes you feel that the author thinks you are an idiot. Scenarios like how the VP HR plots to damage the trust seem to be more suitable for a toddler fable rather than something for teenagers, not mentioning for managers. The rough plot affects the whole four points--though four very good points. I will recommend you to skim the whole book in less than 20 minutes by standing in a bookstore. Five temptations of CEO 1 star?
It is the one makes me begin to feel angry. Again, if the five dysfunctions have been crafted for months, this one seems to be done within hours. The major story (95% of the book) happened in a dark train, where a poor CEO was taught about these five temptations by some ghost-like old men, who turned out later to be the previous CEOs in the SAME company! Again the five temptations are all great and worthwhile points. It is the plot that made me sick. If you have a chance, skim the whole book in less than FIVE minutes.
Silos, Politics and Turf Wars NEGATIVE 1 star
The worst one. Negative 1 star is because it wasted my time. I thought the five temptation one was the worst until I read this one. Patrick spends most of the book to illustrate the silo problems rather than provide any solution. And he even spends many pages about the main character's struggle in balancing his work and his wife's pregnancy, which I believe, should belong to another fable about personal life balance, given how many pages the author devoted to this. From other fables, more or less, you can at least learn something. But not from this one. Forget it!

Executive Stamina: How to Optimize Time, Energy, and Productivity to Achieve Peak Performance ReviewAs tempting as it is to think you can be effective at work without paying attention to your physical health, the reality is much different. Your ability to operative at full capacity is limited by your fitness and stamina (both physical and emotional). This subject is covered in the book Executive Stamina: How to Optimize Time, Energy, and Productivity to Achieve Peak Performance by Marty Selman, PhD. and Joshua Selman. This is something I wish more people understood for themselves, as well as management understanding about others who they are pushing beyond limits.
Contents:
Part 1 - Work/Life Alignment: What Is Most Important to You?; Is Your Schedule Aligned with Your Priorities?; The Minimums and Shifts/Drifts Systems; Finding Your Career Sweet Spot
Part 2 - Building Your Stamina: The Impact of Stress; Increasing Your Fitness; Your Lifelong Fitness Plan; Nutrition; Stress Management - Your Individual Plan; Yoga at the Office
Part 3 - Optimizing Job Performance and Results: Identifying High-Payoff Activities; Taking Control of Your Calendar
Part 4 - Career Management: Reaching Your Full Potential; Avoiding Career Management Mistakes
Part 5 - Personal Relationships: Maintaining Positive Relationships
Conclusion
Index
As you can see from the contents, the authors split up your professional life into five different areas. In order to run at optimal capacity, you really do need to have all these areas in alignment. Realistically, you'll see some areas crying out for attention more than others. For me, I was drawn to the first area about work/life alignment (as many say I must not sleep). Learning to align my schedule with what's most important is something I keep putting off. The "urgent" overruns the "important". I was also intrigued with the Shifts/Drifts system. That's a way to track certain behaviors that you've considered key. You can set the "minimum" activity necessary to move forward towards some goal. Then by tracking drifts, you can notice if you're straying from that commitment. All too often, we end up in a place we don't want to be and wonder how we got there. It wasn't an overnight occurrance in most cases. It was a slow drift from your path that didn't become obvious until it was too late. Checking those drifts can do wonders for keeping you focused, at a point in time where corrections are still easy and possible. The chapter on finding your career "sweet spot" was also timely. We're going through some reorgs at work, and I had to give some thought to a potential move into a new role and position. The reality is that I'm currently in a "sweet spot" right now, a time when my "good at", "like to do", "interested in", and "fits with values" all align in a single job. While a new position could mean more pay, it would also take me away from what I really enjoy doing (and away from what I'm really good at). After reading that chapter, I realized that moving "up" because it's expected is not the right choice.
Actually, *all* the chapters and sections are of value. You could read this book a number of times and pull away something new and different after each reading. What's important though is to understand that you can only push so hard and so long before everything starts to break down around you. Executive Stamina can help prevent that breakdown before it's too late and you've done irreparable hard to your body, emotions, and overall life.Executive Stamina: How to Optimize Time, Energy, and Productivity to Achieve Peak Performance Overview

Reagan on Leadership: Executive Lessons from the Great Communicator (Reagan Centennial Edition) ReviewPresident Reagan has always been a hero of mine. At the age of 8, I became intoxicated with politics in large part because of the 1980 Presidental campaign. As a Canadian, I watched this incredible leader from a little farther away then an Amercian, but came away impressed. I therefore began to read or watch anything I could find on President Reagan. The problem was all the information I gathered failed to answer the key question for me: how did Reagan lead? Much material is available on what he did, but I never received the practical tools I was looking for. Reagan on Leadership clearly and concisely describes his techniques. Strock reached deep into Reagan's tool box and paved the road for how I can apply these tools to my life. It is the only book or article I have read that answers the question I have asking about Reagan for years: not what did he do, but rather how did he it.Reagan on Leadership: Executive Lessons from the Great Communicator (Reagan Centennial Edition) Overview

The Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive: A Leadership Fable ReviewPatrick Lencioni has once again presented a concise, compelling, simple, and wise look at the role of a leader in an organization. 5 temptations of a CEO, a title I felt should have been 5 temptations of any manager, was a much needed look at the insecurities that hit once we are in charge. The trouble I had with that book, and the author deserves no blame for this, is that the individuals who truly needed it would probably not recognize their areas for improvement.
Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive answers that need. I am sure that all executives, all of us, feel extraordinary. We will pick this book up expecting a pat on the back for a job well done. Instead, this book challenges the role of the leader and presents 4 disciplines that should be at the Heart of any World Class organization. In fable format, which is far less threatening, and much more enjoyable to read, Lencioni shares the 4 simple disciplines of healthy organizations- 4.Reinforcing Clarity through Human Systems- 3.Overcommunicate Organizational Clarity- 2. Create Organizational Clarity- 1.Build and Maintain a Cohesive Leadership Team
It is impossible to read this book and not learn from the past experiences that one has as a leader. It also reminds the reader that it is at the very top that an organization derives it's health. Without leadership committed to health, the organization will never find it.
For all the leaders out there, buy this book, open your mind and read it. You may have to face some tough truths, but the individuals who work for you, will thank you for it.The Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive: A Leadership Fable Overview
