Chasing the Wind: The Autobiography of Steve Fossett ReviewBefore his disappearance on 9/4/07 Steve Fossett was a world class adventurer. He's the holder of some 115 world records & many "firsts" in aviation, sailing, and last but not least ballooning. This book takes the reader through the various phases of each major feat the highlight of which is his solo circumnavigation of the globe in a balloon after six attempts. It does become a little bit belabored, but since it's such a unique account of some truly extraordinary feats you can forgive him for some of the "flexing" he does throughout. The actual biographical info on his life is somewhat scant focusing more on his many adventures. It's clear though after reading this that he never did any of this stuff for the publicity. He really wanted to challenge himself and raise the bar for others. You come away from this biography of a hyper-motivated adventurer & successful businessman feeling anything is possible with the right amount of effort and persistance. Perhaps besides his many records that's the real legacy left to the world by Steve Fosset. It's not necessarily what he accomplished so much as what it represents!Chasing the Wind: The Autobiography of Steve Fossett Overview

Learning Journeys: Top Management Experts Share Hard-Earned Lessons on Becoming Great Mentors and Leaders ReviewLearning Journeys is such a pleasant book to read. This book is personal. It¹s personal essays by some of the great management and business leaders in the world. In the book, these leaders reveal the life-changing events of their lives. There are some sad stories, some funny stories, and some spiritual stories: some of the stories are business-related and some are totally personal. What struck me so much about this book is that it reveals the human side of business, something that is so often forgotten.Learning Journeys: Top Management Experts Share Hard-Earned Lessons on Becoming Great Mentors and Leaders Overview

The Naked Truth: A Working Woman's Manifesto on Business and What Really Matters ReviewMargaret Heffernan has never been afraid to talk about the ugliness that can happen for women in Corporate America. Her new book is no different. It brings up almost every important issue for women trying to climb the traditional corporate ladder. In some cases she offers solutions, either from her own experience and research, or through the shared stories of women she interviewed for the book.
Two things in particular in the book stuck with me. In one section she discusses women and their "relationship" with work. I really liked the use of that word, "relationship." Because I do have a relationship with my work, just like I have a relationship with the people in my life or with money. (I had never really thought about it in that way before.) The second item that struck me was after I read one woman's description of something very sexist that happened in the workplace, I expected the next line to say, "that was ten years ago." Instead, the line was "that was in 2004." I think we need reminding that not everything has changed, and in fact, anything going on now is even worse than ten years ago, because it's 2005, and we all (including the boys) know better.The Naked Truth: A Working Woman's Manifesto on Business and What Really Matters Overview

The Top Ten Mistakes Leaders Make ReviewHans Finzel makes the case that poor leadership habits are often the byproduct of observing others' poor leadership habits. This book suggests a concise list of such habits for leaders to dissect and change, with anecdotal examples as well as clear action items that can be implemented tomorrow morning.
Generally, Dr. Finzel solves his Top Ten list of mistakes using the strategies of servant leadership (the basis of the author's own success in church leadership), and he supports his writing with Biblical quotes and his own view on modeling one's actions after Christ's.
However, Finzel generally delivers plain-spoken, well-explained concepts that can be employed in most companies and organizations. Whatever your religion, his strategies embrace a positive, ethical approach to leadership that has been glaringly absent in many corporate American cultures in recent years.
This title probably didn't make a bestseller list, but it is a hidden gem for both established and emerging leaders who wish to prevent or improve upon common poor habits -- a refreshing change of pace from the mainstream best-sellers. For the price, it belongs in your leadership library.The Top Ten Mistakes Leaders Make Overview

The Politics of Fortune: A New Agenda For Business Leaders Review

The author, dean of the Yale business school, has rendered a most valuable service to the business leaders of America, and in the process opened the possibility that new forms of business education, new forms of business practice, and new forms of moral global governance might yet emerge in America.
Originally inspired by the "double-whammy" of 9-11 and Enron on business--(the one costing America, by Fortune's estimate for businesses alone, $150B in additional security measures, or close to 1.5% of the Gross Domestic Product; while others suggest 9-11 has reduced profits by 5-6%), the author provides an easy to read, well-documented overview of why CEOs have to engage in rebuilding the integrity of business, protecting the homeland, preserving global economic security and free trade, taking on global poverty, and influencing foreign policy.
The author excells at pointing out, in the most gracious way possible, how all of the preconceptions of the current administration, and in particular its penchant for unilateralist military bullying, have proven both unworkable in achieving their intended results, while also unsuitable in being translated to economic gains. Military power does not translate into economic power or added prosperity.
This book is *loaded* with common sense and specific ideas for getting business leadership back into the global stabilization dialog. The author focused on two ideas that I consider to be especially important: the need to reexamine how the taxpayer dollar is being spent on national security, with a view to redirecting funds (I add: from military heavy metal to what Joe Nye calls soft power: diplomacy, assistance, intelligence); and on the urgency of restoring the independence and expanding the mandate of the U.S. Information Agency so as to overcome the acute misperceptions of the US fostered by Saudi-funded schools for youths being taught to hate, and little else.
The non-governmental organizations come in for special scrutiny, and the author has many good ideas, not only for promoting better business-NGO partnerships, but for auditing the NGOs and not ceding to them the moral high ground. As he points out, many organizations that oppose globalization or specific business practices do not have any standards or transparency with respect to who funds them, how decisions are made, and so on.
Finally, the author concludes with a focus on business education. While citing many improvements made by many schools, he notes that a comprehensive study and reengineering overall has not occurred since the late 1950's and early 1960's, and that the time is long past when graduate business education must be completely revamped. He is exceptionally astute and credible throughout the book as he explores the many things that CEOs need to know but do not receive training on, to include understanding and dealing with government, NGOs, citizen advocates, and the real world. As he notes, Master's in Business Administration tend to train students for the first years in the corporation, not the long-haul. He places some emphasis on the need to consider continuing education as an extension of the original program, and I immediately thought of an MBA as a limited-term license that must be renewed by recurring personal investments in education.
As someone whose opening lecture line to citizens and businessmen is "if the State fails, you fail," I found this book extraordinarily valuable and urgent. We get the government we deserve. If citizens do not vote, if businessmen do not think of the larger social goods and social contexts within which they operate, then the government will prove incapable and at some point the party will be over.
Yale has always had an extra helping of morality and humanity; in this book the dean of the business school ably makes the case that business leadership and engagement in national security and global stabilization is the sine qua non for continued prosperity. He's got my vote--if I were a mature student looking for a place to learn, he's put Yale right at the top of my list.The Politics of Fortune: A New Agenda For Business Leaders Overview

The Leadership Challenge, 4th Edition ReviewI've read a large number of books on leadership and management over the years. The Kouzes and Posner "The Leadership Challenge" does a good job of providing an easy to read overview which helps leaders in all levels of an organization learn and grow. It's important to note that this is not meant to be a "solutions for specific situations" handbook. Rather, it provides that core level of understanding to give you a foundation, so that as you progress and pick up other "how to" books you have that base support beneath you to keep you grounded in a healthy, productive direction.
There are many first person stories in here to illustrate their points. They are presented with a variety of individuals from different backgrounds and management levels. This is great - it means no matter where the reader is in their career, they can relate directly to at least some of the stories. Sometimes books are tempted to only interview CEOs of gigantic companies, which might be cool for status reasons, but it does little to help the majority of their readers with their actual issues. The Leadership Challenge makes the stories accessible to all.
The key practices laid out in this book are:
* model the way
* inspire a shared vision
* challenge the process
* enable others to act
* encourage the heart
If you sit down with a hefty challenge that leadership has faced in your company, and then compare the progress of the challenge against these five practices, you can see very powerful correlations between what went well and poorly and these practices. There are not just touchy-feely "nice to have" ideas. It is clearly demonstrable that working to build a common purpose with the team, celebrating the small victories as you move along a project, building a climate of trust between managers and employees, and recognizing employees when they do an outstanding job are critical to the short term and long term success of an organization. They can often spell the difference between success and failure on a project.
Well recommended not only for managers and leaders but also for any employee who wants to find more satisfaction in their job. There are many situations where someone who is not "technically" a leader still provides leadership and mentoring activities to his or her coworkers. This book can help anyone succeed and become more enthusiastic about their work and life.

Putting Emotional Intelligence To Work: Successful Leadership is More Than IQ ReviewWhile I found the material in the book to be useful, the idea of emotional intelligence is not a new concept. I found it interesting that there are many occassions where the author quotes Carl Rogers and his knowledge of emotional intelligence. I found this interesting because the concept of emotional intelligence was not put forth by Carl Rogers, rather it was put forth by Howard Gardner who believed standardized IQ tests do not fully measure a persons cognitive ability.
Carl Rogers, on the other hand, put forth the concept of client-centered therapy later changing the name to the person centered approach. A key to Rogers approach was giving the client or person unconditional positive regard. Now, I don't disagree with this approach and I think Rogers had a great deal of emotional intelligence. But when I saw the title contained "Emotional Intelligence," I expected the book to mention Gardner or Thorndike or Daniel Goleman who popularized the concept in the mid 90's. In Gardner's theory, he suggests that perhaps the part of the brain that controls emotional intelligence is more developed in some individuals than others. That is the theory behind the various intelligences he put forth.
As I was reading the conversations between the author and Rogers, it is obvious (to me) that Rogers used his person centered approach. Again, creating an atmosphere where the author could say anything and he didn't have to fear rejection from Rogers. This is the unconditional positive regard. This is the concept the author is attempting to get across to business executives. Create an atmosphere where employees feel free to express their ideas without fear of rejection. The idea may not be something that could be used, but if they feel their ideas are valued and will not be laughed at, it will increase their creative input. Rogers was also noted for not giving advice, rather, he would reflect back to the person what they said, let them think about it and come to their own conclusion.
The author also mentions Theory Z in the book, which is a Japanese style of managment. While he praises this management style, what he fails to mention or get across is the cultural difference. Japan is a collectivist culture whereas America is an individualistic culture. For the collectivist, it is a group effort and if one individual succeeds it is the whole group who is recognized.For the individualist, it is an individual effort and if the individual succeeds, the individual is recognized. Considering the cultural differences, would it be possible to successfully implement this management style within an individualistic culture.
Simply put, what it all comes down to is how well does one get along with others? To me, the book is filled with old concepts but repackaged and sold in a different way. Perhaps all we really needed to know we learned in kindergarten?

The Versatile Leader: Make the Most of Your Strengths Without Overdoing It (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) ReviewI approached this book with a little skepticism: Here it comes, another spin on leadership. (I read more than a hundred books a year, many of them related to management and leadership.) By the third chapter, however, I concluded that Kaplan and Kaiser are not just dressing up old concepts for a new day. They offer a paradigm shift and research to back it up. Think optimize, not maximize. Think right-sizing. This places the onus on leadership aspirants to develop the elusive skill of versatility, which is partly based in the individual's personality psychology. The authors have researched and validated an approach to measuring this skill and providing individuals with the specific marching orders they need to capture this subtlety for themselves. The book includes their research.
I was simulataneously reading a new book, "Personality and the Fate of Organizations" by Robert Hogan, Ph.D., author of the popular Hogan Personality Inventory. Hogan praises Kaplan and Kaiser's work, which is no small praise given Hogan's 30-year career studying the science of personality in the workplace.
The book is also well written, avoiding the dryness of many management books with a broad array of illustrations from literature, history, and other research. Highly recommended.The Versatile Leader: Make the Most of Your Strengths Without Overdoing It (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) Overview

Women on Corporate Boards of Directors: International Research and Practice (New Horizons in Management) ReviewPresents an excellent set of worldwide research on progress, strategies, results, and challenges.
Overall, progress seems to be glacial but more pronounced in European countries, such as Norway with legislated quotas. Women's representation appears associated with representation in senior management, smaller pay gaps, equity legislation, work-family initiatives, social/cultural support, quality of board deliberations, and increased profit. Of course, if the correlation with increased profit proves strong enough, we may see growing demand for the Pax World Women's Equity Fund and others that promote gender equity. So far, correlations seem too weak, although several public pension funds, including CalPERS and CalSTRS may help the cause.
One of the more interesting papers in this collection is that of Val Singh, who focuses on Jordan and Tunisia. I haven't seen much research on corporate governance in Arab countries, especially focused on women, and was surprised to learn 10% of Tunisian directors are women. It is difficult enough trying to get inside the "black box" of boardrooms anywhere. Creating benchmark studies in Arab countries must be even more difficult, given what at least appears to this outsider as a general reluctance to tackle gender issues.
Women do much better at state-run businesses. In the US, we seem to be more willing to experiment at companies that are broken, so the financial crisis may present an opportunity. However, several researchers warn of a "glass cliff." Apparently, women are invited onto more boards where companies are failing and are desperate. They are paid less at companies performing well and more at those doing poorly. Like directors elected by dissident shareowners, women directors are often isolated as outsiders and do better when they are not alone.
At the February 2009 "Women in Investments" conference in Sacramento, CalSTRS board member Carolyn Widener, drew a big laugh when she quoted Nicholas Kristof about speculation at Davos, Switzerland concerning "whether we would be in the same mess today if Lehman Brothers had been Lehman Sisters." Eventually, if resurrected, maybe we'll have Lehman Sisters and Brothers. This volume contains some of the best research to date from a wide variety of disciplines around the world that may just help to get us there.Women on Corporate Boards of Directors: International Research and Practice (New Horizons in Management) Overview

Leadership by Design Review"In today's changing business environment, traditional processes for developing leadership talent are in such a state of flux that a new vocabulary is emerging."Albert A. Vicere and Robert M. Fulmer write, "There is a little interest in the old mainstay term 'management development'. Managers today are often viewed as bureaucrats whose major function is to create complexity and preserve the status quo. 'Executive education' is a more desirable term, but in today's flatter, more networked organizations, there is a less demand for 'executives', often viewed as aloof and removed from the realities of the competitive marketplace. And the word 'education' connotes the esoteric contemplation of academic issues, a process at odds with today's fast-paced business environment. There does seem to be great interest in the term 'leadership development', which characterizes processes for identifying and developing exceptional people capable of moving an organization into the twenty-first century. Although developing tomorrow's leaders is a critical concern for most organizations, equally important is the need to create new structures and processes that will enable the organization to effectively compete in a rapidly changing, global economy. Rather than viewing these two concerns as separate challenges, benchmark organizations from around the world have begun to combine them in an expanded developmental focus which we call 'strategic leadership development'.This focus blends traditional executive education activities with management, leadership, and organizational development techniques to create hands-on, real-time learning laboratories within organizations, which facilitate concontinuous learning, continuous knowledge creation, and organizational competitiveness. This book focuses on the challenge of strategic leadership development-what it is, how it arose and is evolving, and how it is being addressed today" (from the Preface).
In this context, Albert A. Vicere and Robert M. Fulmer :
* discuss several critical ideas that are fundamental to their thinking, including the nature of strategic leadership and the concept of a learning organization.
* describe the traditional paradigm for leadership development, and discuss today's challenges to this traditional way of thinking, and hence describe how organizations are refocusing their leadership development efforts to better develop their pool of strategic leadership talent.
* discuss how strategically focused leadership development processes can help build sustainable organizational competitiveness.
* discuss the nature of new paradigm for effective organizations, how it operates, and how it relates to the evolving approaches to leadership development.
* present a systems model for strategic leadership development to illustrate the major forces shaping the behaviors and outcomes within the field.
* discuss the nature of various techniques and methodologies for leadership development and present a framework for selecting among them.
* compare internal and external strategic leadership development programs, and through case study analyses of university-based general management and company-specific programs define the strengths and weaknesses of each approach.
* present the processes for selecting and managing providers of strategic leadership development.
* discuss assessment and evaluation techniques.
* present six leading-edge examples of new paradigm approaches to leadership development.
* present the seven core elements of strategic leadership development process/'seven Pc' to illustrate the evolution of the field from the past, through today's transition state, to the future.
I highly recommend this invaluable study to all executives and HR practitioners.Leadership by Design Overview

Leaders Make the Future: Ten New Leadership Skills for an Uncertain World (Bk Business) ReviewBob Johansen is the former President and a current Board member of the Institute for the Future (IFTF) - an independent nonprofit think tank that has produced an annual ten-year forecast for over 40 years. Johansen explains that in a world of increasing volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA), leaders must learn new skills in order to make a better future including:
1) Maker instinct (leaders approach their leadership with commitment of a job and energy of a passionate hobby)
2) Clarity (leaders being clear about what they are making but flexible about how it gets made)
3) Dilemma Flipping (turning problems that can't be solved into opportunities)
4) Immersive Learning (learning by doing)
5) Bio-empathy (understand, respect and learn from nature)
6) Constructive depolarization (calming tense situations and bringing people from divergent cultures towards constructive engagement)
7) Quiet transparency (ability to be open and authentic about what matters to you without self-promotion)
8) Rapid Prototyping (ability to create early versions of innovations)
9) Smart mob organizing (creating, engaging and nurturing social networks)
10)Commons creating (stimulate, grow and nurture shared assets that can benefit other players)
While the preface and introduction had me looking forward to reading on, I found getting through the book challenging. The author does an effective job in explaining the "what" and the "why" but not the "how." He uses a patch work of lightly connected examples throughout the book...rather than bringing color to the leadership skill, the examples often tended to be a distraction.
Johansen concludes with a solid recap - questions you may ask yourself in evaluating your level of competence for the new leadership skills along with a self-assessment rating system. Unfortunately, getting from the introduction to chapter 10 takes some doing.

The Adversity Paradox: An Unconventional Guide to Achieving Uncommon Business Success ReviewAuthors J. Barry Griswell and Bob Jennings set out in "The Adversity Paradox" to uncover the source of business savvy, an underlying and critical attribute of extraordinary success. They found that success and fortune were not an accident of luck. Rather, it was about adversity - embracing it then overcoming it - that played a crucial role in establishing a success trajectory that was extraordinary. Adversity can be your teacher and your friend. When approached with this attitude, you will emerge stronger, smarter, and savvier.
"Paradox" is filled with stories of business leaders -including the personal stories of Griswell and Jennings - who have overcome all manner of adversity and applied their experiences to create the business savvy to attain unmatched levels of success. They turned failure on its head and built successful careers and personal lives upon the very experiences most people work to avoid.
Griswell and Jennings include sections on how adversity transformed leading people 1) to be more introspective, 2) to become values-based, 3) to work with "and then some" attitude, 4) to identify their purpose and seek it with passion, and 5) and to develop an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. These are foundational attributes which lead to extraordinary success.
Adversity, large and small, is always lurking and it happens. Last year, 2008, millions came face-to-face with adversity due to the catastrophic global, economic meltdown. Those caught up in this mess will find "The Adversity Paradox" a hopeful book...but only if they can make adversity a friend. Severe setbacks have a way of "making us take stock of our careers and our lives - our progress towards dreams and goals, our strengths and weaknesses, our motivation, and our daily work habits which can often reveal inner resources and abilities we wouldn't have otherwise known we possessed."
We have a choice when faced with adversity and with the right choice, we will find ourselves in one of the most powerful and transformative situations life has to offer. This is a very good book for the times.

You Can't Predict a Hero: From War to Wall Street, Leading in Times of Crisis ReviewI have a large palette when it comes to what I read, and on first look, the story of a Wall Street broker is not something I would usually place high on my list as a "must read". At the urging of a family member whose advice when it comes to good books is top rate, I picked up this one. I absolutely loved it. It is one of the most compelling true stories I've read quite some time and it is wonderfully written. Getting to know Mr. Grano and his accomplishments in the face of diverse and sometimes harrowing challenges is one of the most compelling human stories I've read in some time. The book is both inspirational and educational, one I will keep in my library and refer to when needed. Thank you Mr. Grano.You Can't Predict a Hero: From War to Wall Street, Leading in Times of Crisis Overview

Deep Dive: The Proven Method for Building Strategy, Focusing Your Resources, and Taking Smart Action ReviewHaving worked with management in different industries in various parts of the country it has become apartent to me that strategic thinking occurs significantly less than I first thought. Business leaders over the past couple of years seem to be very short term thinkers. While times were good it was easy to cover up bad decisions but now that revenues are down it is very obvious that their acumen was overestimated. I was some what surprread in Rich Horwath's book that 85% of executive leadership spends less than an hour a month discussing strategy, what are they doing the rest of the month? I believe all leaders can use further development in the strategic thinking arena to keep their skills sharp and to enhance their companies performance. Rich Horwath offers in his latest book, "Deep Dive", a plunge into waters of business creativity, and the unseen jewels that reside beneath the surface.
Complacency has caused more damage in corporate America than foreign competition. New strategies and ways of thinking are how we can turn things around. During an economic downturn, when all of your instinct tells you to hold onto your business model at all costs, this is the precise moment when new strategies are needed the most. What "Deep Dive" does is to identify how to maximize the productivity of a brain storming sessions and eliminate any unnecessary risk when implementing a new strategy.
Several great strategic thinking concepts and methods are introduced in "Deep Dive" and are summarized at the end of each chapter. These examples given through out the book can be utilized across any organization in any functional area. Tools such as the OODA Loop and Contextual Radar methods reveal the context in which particular ideas need to flourish. Rich drives home the fundamentals of his program, stating and restating his three central strategic points, `Acumen, Allocation, Action', which form the outline of his chapters.

Rich Horwath has created a wonderful compilation of methods for businesses that make strategic thinking more clear in this complex global marketplace we live in. He provides a complete list of references given where readers can find further information on the particular methods that suit them or their company best. What "Deep Dive" provides is a sense of focus on the importance of constantly shifting the way a business rides the rough and tumble waters of our economic reality.
"Deep Dive" is about being objective and not just following the school of fish swimming along the surface. Leaders looking to delve down below the surface and open their eyes to see what is going on around them will be justly rewarded.Deep Dive: The Proven Method for Building Strategy, Focusing Your Resources, and Taking Smart Action Overview
