The Versatile Leader: Make the Most of Your Strengths Without Overdoing It (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) ReviewI approached this book with a little skepticism: Here it comes, another spin on leadership. (I read more than a hundred books a year, many of them related to management and leadership.) By the third chapter, however, I concluded that Kaplan and Kaiser are not just dressing up old concepts for a new day. They offer a paradigm shift and research to back it up. Think optimize, not maximize. Think right-sizing. This places the onus on leadership aspirants to develop the elusive skill of versatility, which is partly based in the individual's personality psychology. The authors have researched and validated an approach to measuring this skill and providing individuals with the specific marching orders they need to capture this subtlety for themselves. The book includes their research.
I was simulataneously reading a new book, "Personality and the Fate of Organizations" by Robert Hogan, Ph.D., author of the popular Hogan Personality Inventory. Hogan praises Kaplan and Kaiser's work, which is no small praise given Hogan's 30-year career studying the science of personality in the workplace.
The book is also well written, avoiding the dryness of many management books with a broad array of illustrations from literature, history, and other research. Highly recommended. The Versatile Leader: Make the Most of Your Strengths Without Overdoing It (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) Overview

Being the Boss: The 3 Imperatives for Becoming a Great Leader ReviewSooner or later most managers realize that becoming an effective manager is an enormous challenge and taking a management course is not sufficient preparation, according to Linda Hill and Kent Lineback in this book. Considerable personal change is required for a competent employee to become a skilled manager, and this includes acquiring the necessary skills, knowledge, values, outlook, self-knowledge, judgment and emotional competence.
A manager is responsible for the performance of a group of people, and this means the manager must influence not only what they do, but also the thoughts and feelings that drive their actions. There are many paradoxes in what managers must do, including:
*You are responsible for what others do
*To focus on the work, you must focus on the people doing the work
*You must both develop your people and evaluate them
*You must make your group a cohesive team without losing sight of the individuals on it
*To manage your group, you must manage the larger context beyond your group
*You must do some harm in order to do a greater goodThe manager's "3 imperatives" referred to in the title of the book are: manage yourself, manage your network, and manage your team. The bulk of the book is taken up describing ways in which these imperatives can be achieved. The authors help to make their theoretical advice concrete by using part of a fictional case study at the start of each chapter, illustrating a range of problems encountered by a technically competent individual who has recently been promoted to a managerial position.
Two key insights I gleaned from the book were the author's view of the difference between a boss-employee relationship and a friend-friend relationship, and the returns that can be gained by cultivating a network of relationships inside and outside the organization. The boss-employee relationship works best as a cordial, genuinely caring relationship, but the primary goal is to do the work; bosses and direct reports are not equals, and a boss has to evaluate direct reports. While most people appreciate the importance of a network of relationships to personal career success, the authors point out that the success of a manager within an organization depends on securing the right resources for his or her team, and this requires gaining and exercising political power, which is done through relationships.
The book contains a number of self-assessment questions. These types of questions are often assess the reader's vanity more effectively than the reader's ability, but they do provide a helpful list of attributes that a manager needs to work on. New managers will find this book a great help when navigating unfamiliar territory, and even well-seasoned managers will find plenty of useful insights for their continuing leadership journey.Being the Boss: The 3 Imperatives for Becoming a Great Leader Overview

The Unwritten Laws of Business ReviewBasically, as a 50-year old professional, this book delivers little of what I have not already learned through trial and error.
This book allows you to learn without the scar tissue which I have accumulated from my "trial and error" travails.
Had someone come to me with this book when I was young -- when I intentionally continued to live in my world (by stealth) in order not to heed to the advice of my elders and continued to avoid their prophetic advice -- I would have been much better informed.
My recommenddation for AARP-card carrying members like myself, get a young'un to deliver this common sensical verse of advice at the young and restless person's door step (God forbid a gray-haired geezer be the deliverer of this book of truisms); and, then pray that the easily read words written therein somehow can be absorbed -- even if only partly. This book only offers good advice, so the more taken -- the more good is given.
"Pass it on."The Unwritten Laws of Business Overview

Taming The Abrasive Manager: How To End Unnecessary Roughness In The Workplace (The Jossey-Bass Management Series) ReviewHaving worked as a human resource professional in an international corporation for over a decade, I was immensely impressed by this book. Crawshaw tells you exactly how to intervene with abrasive bosses from the management perspective - how to confront them and curb their behavior without getting dragged into endless defensive debates. The book is very easy to read and her approach is extremely effective. Crawshaw takes a difficult subject and gives us hope that we can "tame" these managers sensitively and professionally by following her realistic, practical, and insightful advice. This book should be required reading for all HR types and people who end up managing abrasive managers.

Behind the Berkshire Hathaway Curtain: Lessons from Warren Buffett's Top Business Leaders ReviewAn Interesting Look Behind the Berkshire Hathaway Curtain
By Ravi Nagarajan
Published on April 27, 2010 at 8:35 pm
"We are given two eyes, two ears, and one mouth, so we should always observe and listen, and talk only 20 percent of the time."
- Randy Watson, President and CEO of Justin Brands
As value investors, most of us search diligently for opportunities to purchase companies below intrinsic value that offer the prospect of superior returns with minimal downside risk. We look at investors who have a proven track record over many decades and attempt to gain insights into their success and to emulate their approach. No investor is more closely examined than Berkshire Hathaway Chairman and CEO Warren Buffett, yet the normal emphasis is on his stock picks rather than his ability to select managers. Few investors pay much attention to Berkshire's depth of management talent. After all, Berkshire is simply Mr. Buffett's show, isn't it?
While Warren Buffett is clearly the genius behind Berkshire Hathaway's overall success, the company also has an exceptionally deep bench of management talent. Behind The Berkshire Hathaway Curtain is a new book written by Ronald W. Chan which provides an excellent introduction to several subsidiary managers as well as one director. The idea behind Mr. Chan's book is similar to The Warren Buffett CEO by Robert P. Miles which was published in 2002. In both cases, the subsidiary managers are highlighted in ways that are often overlooked.
What Drives Management Success?
Those of us who focus on quantitative analysis when searching for investment opportunities may lose sight of the qualitative factors that can make or break a business. Whether a company has management that is capable, ethical, and driven to succeed is a key factor for long term success and the managers profiled in Mr. Chan's book all fit the bill. Warren Buffett's hands off management style can only work when subsidiaries are in the hands of capable and ethical individuals.
One interesting aspect of Mr. Chan's book is the fact that he has chosen to interview several subsidiary managers who are not often in the limelight. Randy Watson of Justin Brands, Cathy Baron-Tamraz of Business Wire, Dennis Knautz of Acme Brick, and Marla Gottschalk of The Pampered Chef are hardly household names and chances are that most Berkshire shareholders who attend the annual meeting on Saturday would not recognize these CEOs if they ran into them in the convention center. However, the qualities that they bring to the table have added great value for shareholders.
Others interviewed for the book include Stan Lipsey of The Buffalo News, Barry Tatelman of Jordan's Furniture, Brad Kinstler of See's Candies, David Sokol of MidAmerican Energy, and Berkshire Director Walter Scott Jr. All of the individuals profiled in the book have different backgrounds and faced unique challenges as they rose through the management ranks but they share a common enthusiasm for their business and a desire to make sure that they live up to Warren Buffett's expectations.
What About Insurance?
One surprising aspect of the book is that Mr. Chan did not interview any of Berkshire Hathaway's insurance subsidiary managers. While Brad Kinstler, See's Candies current CEO, has experience within Berkshire's insurance subsidiaries, we do not get any direct input from managers such as Ajit Jain or Tony Nicely. Given the importance of the insurance business at Berkshire, the lack of such material seems like a significant omission. While the book has some great content, it would be much improved if it had at least one interview with an insurance subsidiary manager.
MidAmerican Voting Interest
The book also contains one error on page 152 related to MidAmerican Energy. Mr. Chan states that Berkshire is restricted to a voting interest of less than 10 percent due to the Public Utility Holding Company Act of 1935. However, the act was repealed in 2006 and Berkshire converted its non-voting preferred stock to common stock on February 9, 2006. As of December 31, 2009, Berkshire had a 89.5 percent economic and voting interest in MidAmerican.
Despite these two issues, the book is well worth reading for anyone who is interested in learning more about the men and women who run the day to day operations at Berkshire Hathaway's subsidiaries. The future success of Berkshire will depend on the continued performance of these individuals. In addition, Mr. Buffett's successor will be chosen from the current pool of management talent at the subsidiary level. The book is quick to read and hard to put down. As I write this review, less than 24 hours has passed since my copy arrived.
Disclosure: The author received a complimentary review copy from the publisher. The author owns shares of Berkshire Hathaway and is the author of The Rational Walk's Berkshire Hathaway 2010 Briefing Book which provides a detailed analysis of the company along with estimates of intrinsic value. The Performance Pipeline: Getting the Right Performance At Every Level of Leadership ReviewOne of Stephen Drotter's previous books was - "The Leadership Pipeline - How to build a Leadership Powered Company"
As you can deduce from the titles, Drotter feels that almost everyone in a company should be a leader.
The introduction "Dealing with pervasive uncertainty" talks about all the unknowns of the current situation. Although I feel these uncertainties, there is a part in everyone that wants to think that the current time has greater uncertainty than others. I have found we always feel that way though.
He talks about not only having good leadership skills but applying them properly for optimum performance.
Of course he also touches on succession planning. This is the key role for any board. Also key for any organization to have long term staying ability.
Performance Pipeline draws on decades of experience and research so has many interesting stories. The best learning is often gained through stories (and they keep it interesting).
This is an HR book of sorts. There is a great list of interview questions in the appendix. I always find it easiest to pick questions from such a list.
Good book - too much to summarize. Best to just read it.

Strategic Six Sigma: Best Practices from the Executive Suite ReviewUnless you are the CEO of a company and have total control over implementing a Six Sigma program, I wouldn't recommend this book. It doesn't go much into the meat of Six Sigma, but is focused around developing a Six Sigma culture within your organization. It is also very redundant, repeating the same themes over and over throughout the book. A good editor could have reduced this book to 50 pages. Not recommended.Strategic Six Sigma: Best Practices from the Executive Suite Overview

Designing Organizations: An Executive Briefing on Strategy, Structure, and Process (Jossey-Bass Management Series) Review"This book is about designing effective organizations. It emphasizes that design is a key task of the leader. It suggests that effective organizations are necessary for competitiveness and they are a growing source for competitive advantage. The focus of the book is therefore on equipping leaders with the understanding and the tools necessary to create organizations that are superior to those of their competitors."
In this context J. Galbraith :
* examines the forces (buyer power, variety, change, and speed) that are shaping organizations.
* presents the organizational design framework in the form of "the star model". In the star model, design policies fall into five categories :
(1) Strategy,
(2) Structure,
(3) Processes,
(4) Rewards,
(5) People.
* looks at policy areas/dimensions that determine the structure of an organization : specialization, shape, distribution of power, and departmentalization.
* discusses the lateral processes as a multidimentional aspects and the ability to be responsive to products, customers, functions, geographies, and work flow processes.
* focuses on three organizational design models : functional integrators, the distributed organization, and the front/back hybrid structure.
* examines virtual corporation as a network of independent companies.
"In conclusion", J. Galbraith writes, "I wish to emphasize once again the role of leader. I see the leader as a decision shaper rather than a decision maker. The decision-shaping role is achieved through the organizational design. The star model provides the management-controlled policies that will influence how others make decisions."
I highly recommend.

Organizational Behavior Review·Very little focus on individual behavior in organizations - I know this is not a psychology text, but, Jex (2002), or one of the other psych authors (Osland, 2000) could have used for this course with much better coverage and not alter the course objectives to a great extent.
·For a 2003 edition of text, the citations were very much out of date. The chapter on leadership for example (Chapter 14, which had a total of 53 citations) had only seven references within the last five years; 1998 or greater.
·I am not of the opinion that this was a graduate text. The stories, pictures, essay and "effective manager" were not intellectual in their added information. In many cases the added material didn't correspond to the text (see chart on page 48 and subsequent text explanation). Another example would be on page 157 they ask the reader to refer to Figure 8.2 and then explain the chart with text that isn't even related to the major sections of this chart.
oNot one of the Effective Manager boxes has references; where did all this good advice come from?
·Typo's abounded in the text, they always do - but check out page 233 Chapter summary - it's not the right chapter; this appears agan with chapter 19. I really had the feeling that this was written by three people who did not do a line-by-line update of the 7th edition.
·Of very serious concern would be the author's inclusion of sources in their writing. This infuriated me to no end. Page 63 under Gender "However, women are reported to be more conforming and to have lower expectations of success than men do." That is a very serious statement and it contains no citation - what reports, who, where, when? Another example is on page 85 when discussion perceptual differences in managers and employees - not citations given, even when stating that the differences are significant.
oJust to show that I did not cull these examples only from the front of the book, Pg 274 "Recent work on the linkages among corporate culture and financial performance reaffirms the importance of an emphasis on helping employees adjust to environment." What recent work, by who, saying what? This is just poor scholarship in my humble student estimation.Organizational Behavior Overview

The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Pentagon (Complete Idiot's Guides) ReviewThis book is both funny and functional -- I use it as a desk reference in my work counselling companies who have to work with, or sell to, the US military, as well as a random excuse to brighten the day.
Moreover, military officers I work with have started to recommend it to colleagues attending the services' staff colleges...not because there are no other reference books, but because this one tells you things that are useful in a way that makes you genuinely interested in learning more.
The Pentagon lore here is well-researched, and provides a terrific foundation for a primer on the parts of the US military with roots in The Building.
Better yet, it's a fine effort to bridge inter-service rivalries: you can read someone poking fun at those Other Guys with the Funny Uniforms and, while nobody's watching, actually appreciate the Other Guys' history, culture and lore.
My favourite parts are the ones about Classified Documents, and the civilian's guide to Missile Defense. Not only are these great examples of how Cateau and Levin make complex topics accessible with clear examples, but I just plain couldn't read these ones aloud to friends without laughing!
Okay, and the quiz on Navy Abbreviations catches even the most avid acronym interpreters! The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Pentagon (Complete Idiot's Guides) Overview
