Proven Strategies in Competitive Intelligence: Lessons from the Trenches ReviewThis book is a decent one for your library shelf. It includes a fair variety of articles, quite often featuring widely known names in the CI field. The idea of "proven" and "strategies" may be a bit misleading however, as some of these so-caled proven strategies were really philosphies, tactics or concepts that worked for a short time but were shown to be difficult to sustain. Witness the recent public difficulties at Procter & Gamble or Daimler Benz for example and you'll understand this.
For those people who read or have seen the CI Review, you'll recognize that these chapters first appeared as articles in that venue. Some of the chapters are now several years old, stale, and the individuals, departments or companies involved have undergone major shifts in their approaches to CI and to the topics of these articles. I should note that this doesn't mean that the information is invalid, indeed, it is helpful more often than not. However, "proven" strategies are enduring... some of the ones highlighted here were "practiced" for sure, but "proven" may be a bit of a marketing stretch. I'd still recommend this book to those individuals new to the field, and those who haven't accessed this material before in its other forms.Proven Strategies in Competitive Intelligence: Lessons from the Trenches Overview

Dangerous Markets: Managing in Financial Crises ReviewIf you have no other book on financial crisis management, you must have this one.
The authors succinctly and clearly explain why economies in crisis do not behave the way economies normally do. They then identify key weaknesses in the financial sectors of crisis economies, and explain why they occur.
The book then goes on to provide a thorough and clear exposition on how crisis economies can be turned around, and what needs to be done, both politically and financially.
At this point the book turns to consider bank restructuring (a very specialised subject) and recovery of NPL portfolios in crisis economies. It concludes with recommendations for strengthening the international financial system to limit early economic collapse and prevent international financial contagion.
I really like this book, both as a guide for students, and a "how to" for CEO's and the financial sector. It is brilliantly clear and practical.
If you want to protect yourself and your organisation from financial crisis, or understand what happens when the economy you're operating in suffers collapse, get this book.Dangerous Markets: Managing in Financial Crises Overview

Cybernetic Analysis for Stocks and Futures: Cutting-Edge DSP Technology to Improve Your Trading (Wiley Trading) ReviewIf I had the choice of picking just one book on TA, it would be this one!
The new technical indicators developed in this book are far superior to the traditional indicators like Exponential and Simple Moving Averages, RSI, Stochastics etc.
I don't have TradeStation, but the source-code for the indicators are well explained, so I translated TradeStation code to my Java based system in no time.
Basically the book deals with the marked using fairly advanced math for splitting the data in a trend-mode and cycle-mode. Traditional methods of smoothing the data using Simple/Exponential Moving averages are not bad, but they filter the data relatively poorly, so that there is a "leak" of higher frequencies into the result, giving the familiar whip-saws. To reduce the whip-saws, one is stuck with sometimes an unacceptable lag. For comparison, one of the technical indicators in the book, the Instantaneous Trendline, by applying more advanced mathematical filtering, cuts down on the whip-saws, but has virtually no lag!
This is just one example of the many new (revolutionary, I would say) ways of looking at marked data.Of the oscillators I have implemented so far the Stochastic CyberCycle, but this togheter with the Instantaneous Trendline are themselves so good that I have dumped my usual EMAs, MACDs,
etc from my charts.
I'm really looking forward to the sequel of the book (if there will be one).Cybernetic Analysis for Stocks and Futures: Cutting-Edge DSP Technology to Improve Your Trading (Wiley Trading) Overview

Behind the Berkshire Hathaway Curtain: Lessons from Warren Buffett's Top Business Leaders ReviewAn Interesting Look Behind the Berkshire Hathaway Curtain
By Ravi Nagarajan
Published on April 27, 2010 at 8:35 pm
"We are given two eyes, two ears, and one mouth, so we should always observe and listen, and talk only 20 percent of the time."
- Randy Watson, President and CEO of Justin Brands
As value investors, most of us search diligently for opportunities to purchase companies below intrinsic value that offer the prospect of superior returns with minimal downside risk. We look at investors who have a proven track record over many decades and attempt to gain insights into their success and to emulate their approach. No investor is more closely examined than Berkshire Hathaway Chairman and CEO Warren Buffett, yet the normal emphasis is on his stock picks rather than his ability to select managers. Few investors pay much attention to Berkshire's depth of management talent. After all, Berkshire is simply Mr. Buffett's show, isn't it?
While Warren Buffett is clearly the genius behind Berkshire Hathaway's overall success, the company also has an exceptionally deep bench of management talent. Behind The Berkshire Hathaway Curtain is a new book written by Ronald W. Chan which provides an excellent introduction to several subsidiary managers as well as one director. The idea behind Mr. Chan's book is similar to The Warren Buffett CEO by Robert P. Miles which was published in 2002. In both cases, the subsidiary managers are highlighted in ways that are often overlooked.
What Drives Management Success?
Those of us who focus on quantitative analysis when searching for investment opportunities may lose sight of the qualitative factors that can make or break a business. Whether a company has management that is capable, ethical, and driven to succeed is a key factor for long term success and the managers profiled in Mr. Chan's book all fit the bill. Warren Buffett's hands off management style can only work when subsidiaries are in the hands of capable and ethical individuals.
One interesting aspect of Mr. Chan's book is the fact that he has chosen to interview several subsidiary managers who are not often in the limelight. Randy Watson of Justin Brands, Cathy Baron-Tamraz of Business Wire, Dennis Knautz of Acme Brick, and Marla Gottschalk of The Pampered Chef are hardly household names and chances are that most Berkshire shareholders who attend the annual meeting on Saturday would not recognize these CEOs if they ran into them in the convention center. However, the qualities that they bring to the table have added great value for shareholders.
Others interviewed for the book include Stan Lipsey of The Buffalo News, Barry Tatelman of Jordan's Furniture, Brad Kinstler of See's Candies, David Sokol of MidAmerican Energy, and Berkshire Director Walter Scott Jr. All of the individuals profiled in the book have different backgrounds and faced unique challenges as they rose through the management ranks but they share a common enthusiasm for their business and a desire to make sure that they live up to Warren Buffett's expectations.
What About Insurance?
One surprising aspect of the book is that Mr. Chan did not interview any of Berkshire Hathaway's insurance subsidiary managers. While Brad Kinstler, See's Candies current CEO, has experience within Berkshire's insurance subsidiaries, we do not get any direct input from managers such as Ajit Jain or Tony Nicely. Given the importance of the insurance business at Berkshire, the lack of such material seems like a significant omission. While the book has some great content, it would be much improved if it had at least one interview with an insurance subsidiary manager.
MidAmerican Voting Interest
The book also contains one error on page 152 related to MidAmerican Energy. Mr. Chan states that Berkshire is restricted to a voting interest of less than 10 percent due to the Public Utility Holding Company Act of 1935. However, the act was repealed in 2006 and Berkshire converted its non-voting preferred stock to common stock on February 9, 2006. As of December 31, 2009, Berkshire had a 89.5 percent economic and voting interest in MidAmerican.
Despite these two issues, the book is well worth reading for anyone who is interested in learning more about the men and women who run the day to day operations at Berkshire Hathaway's subsidiaries. The future success of Berkshire will depend on the continued performance of these individuals. In addition, Mr. Buffett's successor will be chosen from the current pool of management talent at the subsidiary level. The book is quick to read and hard to put down. As I write this review, less than 24 hours has passed since my copy arrived.
Disclosure: The author received a complimentary review copy from the publisher. The author owns shares of Berkshire Hathaway and is the author of The Rational Walk's Berkshire Hathaway 2010 Briefing Book which provides a detailed analysis of the company along with estimates of intrinsic value. (Great) Employees Only: How Gifted Bosses Hire and De-Hire Their Way to Success ReviewThere is a lot to like about this book. One, there is helpful, specific practical information on how to create a "hiring pool" to have better employees. Two, there is revolutionary thinking about "de-hiring." This sounds like a synonym for "firing" but it isn't... it's a new way to think about employees and how to motivate them to be top performers or motivate them to find a place where they can be (working elsewhere). Finally, the book is clever and witty. Dauten is a syndicated newspaper columnist, and his writing style is personal and warm. Don't be fooled by the light touch and humor -- this is a book that is both deeply philosophical and immediately practical. It's the employment equivalent of Good To Great.(Great) Employees Only: How Gifted Bosses Hire and De-Hire Their Way to Success Overview

Advising Ultra-Affluent Clients and Family Offices (Wiley Finance) ReviewIn light of the recent global turmoil this book seems especially relevant, albeit for a specialised audience. I mean, how many people will really find this germane? This is not a reflection on the authors, but on the subject. Still, the text is quite readable. It explains what wealthy clients often look for in financial hand holding. Typically they do not have much [any?] expertise in financial matters and will depend on you for advice and management of their funds.
Unsurprisingly, as far as investment management is concerned, the emphasis seems to be on active management, with its accompanying fees. These are often over 1%. There is little suggestion about the use of passive index funds, which have much lower expenses.
To be sure, the book does talk about cases where clients need advice about spending and about such subjects as real estate investments. So some active management fees levied by you are appropriate. But a good advisor should also suggest a core of index funds, that will lower the overall expenses of the client.Advising Ultra-Affluent Clients and Family Offices (Wiley Finance) Overview

The Hedge Fund Book: A Training Manual for Professionals and Capital-Raising Executives ReviewI'm looking at this book as someone outside of finance looking to get in.
Pros:
Emphasizes creation of marketing materials. Talks about topics to mention specifically in marketing--very helpful.
New insight: Focus on selling process, trust, risk management (especially) and infrastructure rather than returns
Author has extra videos online that extend book topics, free discounts on related services. Author is well intentioned.
Really liked that he included a standard due diligence questionnaire
Cons:
Points made are often basic (emphasize unique selling proposition, positive thinking), rather than specific - Leaves out prime brokers & cap intro, soft dollars, legal & compliance issues (3c1vs 3c7, accredited vs qualified, etc.), historic context (Dodd-Frank legislation impact, rise of high frequency) & industry landscape (funds vs fund of funds, institutions vs family offices etc).
Author comes off as obsequious in the interviews when he always agrees with subjects. Too many interviews with service providers, not enough with name brand hedge fund managers. Study questions seem silly for a non-academic book. The Hedge Fund Book: A Training Manual for Professionals and Capital-Raising Executives Overview

Of Permanent Value: The Story of Warren Buffett/2008 Cosmic Edition/2 volumes ReviewIn my opinion, Of Permanent Value 2008 Cosmic Edition by Andy Kilpatrick is the best book about Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway (which I also believe it is the thickest book about Warren/Berkhire, and for the better). It also covers important people around/related to Warren Buffett. Simply, this book is a must read for all Warren Buffett fans and all value investor.
First, eventhough this book is very abundant in information (i.e. thick), it is not boring to read. One of the reason is that the chapters are mostly short (and getting directly to the point). If you don't feel like reading the whole book, you can always pick the chapters that interest you. Kudos to Andy Kilpatrick for putting this book together and continue to update the story about the greatest value investor of our time. I also appreciate Andy Kilpatrick's (and Warren Buffett's) sense of humor.
Secondly, this 2008 Cosmic Edition contains several important improvements/updates. Some of the example:
1. Lots of awesome color photos (page 1117-1190, etc)
2. Updates on Warren Buffett/Berkshire Hathaway activity during the year 2007 and early 2008 (Business update, 2007 Annual Shareholder Meeting, Berkshire 60% purchase of $7B business/Marmon Holdings, Warren business trip to Canada, China, South Korea, etc)
3. A photo index on page 1813 (with 1,400+ photos, it is really nice to have an index for the photos)
I hope you enjoy this book as much as I do. I have read this book more than once (including the previous versions). I learn so much from Of Permanent Value, and I learn something new everytime I read it.
Below I added more detail review about the content of the book.
Sincerely,
Sidarta Tanu
=============================================================
Now about the content of the book. You will learn a lot about Warren Buffett and his life, and not only investing topic (investing decisions that he made throughout his career) but his life principles, family, and business in general as well. You will learn about his first job delivering papers when he was 13 (he filed income tax and deducted the bike as business cost), and how he build his first business (pinball machine business), created Buffett partnership, break it up (liquidate), acquire berkshire mills, creating Berkshire Hathaway as investment vehicle, and many other great investment decision/story that he made (Geico, See's Candies, Dairy Queen, General Re, Coca Cola, Salomon, Washington Post, Gillette etc)
Buffett concrete rules for investing are:
1. Never lose money
2. Never forget rule #1
I know it's easier said (what he say above about to never lose money) than done based on my 10 years of invesitng experience , but then again I'm no Warren Buffett.
In my opinion, here are the 5 strategy/skills that Warren Buffett uses (Mr. Buffett, please correct me if I'm wrong):
1. Intrinsic Value
2. Margin of Safety
3. Temperament (discipline and understanding Mr.Market)
4. Circle of Competence (knowing what your circle of competence)
5. Common Sense (which I think is the most important factor and encapsulate everything about Warren Buffett.)
You will learn that Warren is very good with numbers (calculating in his head) and memorizing so many facts and numbers. You will also learn that Warren is a man with a very good sense of humor.
There are so many things/chapters that I like on this book. Let me try to mention three of my favorite sections.
One is when Warren need to make a decision who would run Salomon ($150B institution with 8000 employees) within 2 days during their first crisis. There are 12 top-level managers that he interviewed. "This was the most important hire of my life", said Warren to the Columbia business students. The chapter explain his thought process of this candidate selection in detail. Warren mentioned that the good news (for the students and the candidate) is that he didn't ask what their grades were (laughter). Warren also said, "Somebody once said that in looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence and energy. and if they don't have the first, the other two will kill you. if you think about it, it's true, if you hire somebody without integrity, you want them to be dumb and lazy" (laughter). And he conclude the topic with this statement which I think is very powerful: "Pick the kind of person to work for you that you want to marry your son or daughter. You won't go wrong". By the way, he picked Deryck Maughan by the way for his integrity.
Another chapter that I really like is how Warren put the audience (of more than 2000 people) through Business School in an electrifying two minutes (The chapter about "Generics"). See how Warren answer the question of "Will developments in the generic brand area hurt coca-cola?" which is a very important questions. I'll try not to spill too much and take the joy of reading this chapter yourself but he basically explains in a nutshell (with all the details and numbers) how business and competition works (and using several other example like Gilette, Marlboro, Sam Cola etc) and how he convinced the audience (and me as a reader) that coca cola is considered immune to generics. He explains how one can save $500 for smoking generic brand (vs Marlboro) which is a lot of money. While a man will probably will only save $11 per year by not using Gilette Sensor and probably leave band-aids on his face and an uncomfotable experience for opting for generics/lower quality blades. And for coca cola, the net profit margin is only 1 cents per serving (can) while a lot of the ingredients cost (such as the aluminium close to 6 cents a can, sugar 1.3 ounce per can or 1.75 cents etc) the same regardless for coke or other cola company.
The third chapter that I like is when Warren is being questioned by CEOs about what is his best advice for CEOs/leaders.. expecting to get some standard answers like honesty and loyalty.. Warren actually didn't even touch those areas (which I'm sure Warren do think those are also important).. but what Warren actually said is, "Set your expectation low, and you will rarely get dissapointed".
I'll stop here before it's getting too long. In summary, If you are a Warren Buffett fans, then this book is for you. If you are uncertain, you can get other books first (potentially less thick book), like "Warren Buffet Way" or maybe "Buffettology", and if you like them (Warren) or want to know more about Warren then get this book. I personally don't like it at the beginning but as time goes by (and after I re-read the book/chapters), I changed my mind, this book is a masterpiece.
As a Berkshire shareholder, I want to encourage all berkshire shareholders (and potential/future shareholders) to read this book to know more about the person in charge of your berkshire investment. I also want to encourage all shareholders to go to the annual shareholder meeting while Mr. Buffett is still in charge.
Last but not least, if I have to sum this book up in a word or two, I would use the word "WISDOM" to describe this book, though I have a strong feeling that Warren will disagree with me and think that the more suitable phrase is "COMMON SENSE"

Origins of the Crash: The Great Bubble and Its Undoing ReviewRoger Lowenstein is one of the best financial reporters around, and he has done a fine job of taking the public information about stock market influences since the 1970s and connecting them to the 2000-2002 stock market crash in the United States.
I know of no book that touches on so many subjects including:
-Retirement money moving into mutual funds
-LBOs creating pressure on CEOs to get their stock prices up
-Leveraging of public companies to improve stock price
-The rise of free market economics as a policy influence
-401(k) plans creating a chase for fast results
-CEO stock options rising through the roof
-Michael Jensen and Joel Stern providing arguments in favor of excessive payments to executives
-Rise of the CFO as a "profit engineer" to produce most of company earnings results
-Lack of e.p.s. hit for stock options
-CEO pay skyrockets in the absence of performance due to lax consultants and boards
-New stock options being granted after stocks drop
-Cozy boards that inappropriately keep CEOs in place
-Managed earnings (especially by GE and Coca-Cola)
-Reduced disclosure
-Special Purpose Vehicles (to keep losses and debt hidden from investors)
-Security analysts having conflicts of interest
-SEC didn't do enough
-Accounting firms have conflicts of interest
-Derivatives are too unregulated
-Too much money to Venture Capital funds
-IPO boom
-Pro forma earnings
-Overinvestment in telecommunications
-Unrealistic expectations for the Internet and Internet companies
-Fraud by Enron, WorldCom and others.
Mr. Lowenstein also goes on to describe the current reform efforts including Reg FD and the Sarbanes-Oxley legistlation, and finds that we have not really cured the problem. We will inevitably have another bubble and crash ahead. I agree with that view.
At bottom, Mr. Lowenstein understands very well that too much financial incentive for executives is bad for everyone. The temptation is simply too great to bend the line . . . or to cross way over it. The average compensation in major public companies is excessive now, so the ultimate cause of inappropriate behavior is still in place. As a consultant, I have repeatedly seen honorable people make lousy decisions when the size of their bonus and stock option potential was larger than they could deal with in an unemotional way.
The book's main weaknesses come in two areas. First, Mr. Lowenstein views from the problem as an outsider and gets almost all of his information from the media. As a result, he doesn't give you the real pulse of what was going wrong in the companies. It would have been helpful if he had contrasted the Enrons and WorldComs with companies that were led by executives who have done an outstanding job running their companies during the same years (while being exposed to the same temptations and conflicts) such as Michael Dell, Tom Golisano, James Morgan, Jake Gosa, Bob Swanson, and Bob Knutson.
Second, he is sometimes careless about details. Joel Stern's Economic Value Added (EVA) is described as "Equity Value Added." The Innovator's Dilemma by Professor Clayton Christensen is described as being a bad influence on Citicorp by discouraging executives from improving their existing operations (nothing could be further from the truth).
In the end, I was impressed by his understanding that feeding greed with unlimited incentives is a bad idea. That's the bottom line on this crash.
As I finished the book, I was left wondering how we can cure this tendency to provide too many financial incentives to do the wrong thing. Simply policing those who are provided with the incentives more closely will probably not work by itself.Origins of the Crash: The Great Bubble and Its Undoing Overview

However, for someone who has been out of school for a short period of time, it doesn't offer much in the way of career guidance. It does offer good tips on graduate school and how to find the program that is right for you depending on what type of job you are interested in after.
