Bad Advice: Bush's Lawyers in the War on Terror ReviewWe are now in an intense national debate about Bush administration policies that affect persons suspected of attacking America on and after 9/11. I learned more about how we ARE and ARE NOT prepared for terrorism (as a country and as people) from reading this book than I have from about 2,000 hours watching news programs. He obliterates the sense of helplessness so many of us seem to feel about terrorism. I'd seen Larsen on TV and come to respect his sage opinions, so I bought the book. In it, he simplifies complicated political mumbling and sleight-of-hand into real language about what's going on and what we should do. His position makes great sense. His opinion on immigration, on controlling nuclear supplies and personal preparedness are so logical you'll be wondering how the whole topic ever looked overwhelming. He does it all without talking down to people who didn't spend their time at West Point. It's an immensely readable, deeply grounded, reassuring book. It takes a genius to distill a complicated subject so eloquently. Prelude to Terror: the Rogue CIA, The Legacy of America's Private Intelligence Network the Compromising of American Intelligence ReviewFirst and foremost, I think the POV is the CIA's "intelligence" wing(s) vs. the "Ops" goons, a longstanding civil war in the CIA and the other clandestine services where Trento, who has covered intelligence for 35 years, clearly sources to the inteligence side of the battle.
Those of us following scandals from Nixon's treason in 1968 as a private citizen who sabotaged Vietnam War peace negotiations, through Watergate, through Bush I's treason in Iran as a private citizen negotiating the continued retention of American Hostages, through Iran/Contra, through Bush II's treason as a private citizen interfering in Mideast peace negotiations, noticed the same small cabal involved in everything - Ted Shackley, Thomas Clines, John Poindexter, Richard Secord, John Singlaub, George Herbert Walker Bush, James Angleton, Chi Chi Quinterez, Ed Wilson - and at various times, people like Oliver North and even Zbiegniew Brzezhinski operating on their behalf on a regular basis. Two of these, Angleton and Clines, were interviewed by Trento.
This book goes back to the days of Dulles and ahead to the present and shows how the CIA's old boy network can always bite back harder than it's bitten. It deals peripherally with things like BCCI and Nugan/Hand. It's much more critical of Stansfield Turner, whom I have met on a couple of occasions, than I would be, but it nicely fills in the back story on his period as director of the CIA.
This book has nothing about Adnan Kashoggi but does talk about Sarkis Soghnalian, a Turkish/Armenian power broker. I think one of the weak links for the rogue operative network is in fact the information held by their non-American allies. It's possible the US or Israel will attack Iran, and if so, people should be educated enough to understand any revelations the Iranians might have for us in retaliation.Prelude to Terror: the Rogue CIA, The Legacy of America's Private Intelligence Network the Compromising of American Intelligence Overview

Risk Analysis and Security Countermeasure Selection ReviewI have know Tom Norman for many years, and I do not know anyone that can match him for the depth of knowledge and experience he has in the security profession. He has a gift for understanding and communicating the essence of something: he can tell you not only what is important, but why it is important, and how it relates to other components within an overall security system. I consider his books to be essential toolbox works, destined to be dog-eared, annotated, and bristling with Post-It Notes. They don't belong on the bookshelf, but in the field or on the desk, where you can reach them easily.
This book does not disappoint. It is rich in detail, filled with how-to information that will guide the reader through the risk analysis process from the beginning to the end. The section on selection of methodologies provides the reader with information on what is available and their strengths and weaknesses. The author contributes one that he developed from studying al Qaeda: called the KSM-Asset Target Value for Terrorism Matrix. Named for Khalid Shaihk Mohammed, it provides a methodology for asset target valuation that closely mirrors the apparent priorities of the foremost terrorist network in the world today, giving security professionals insight into the relative value their assets may have to a terrorist adversary.
The premise of this book is that security is a seamless process that connects threat to analysis to behavior to countermeasures to metrics and finally reporting. The author covers each topic in great detail, explaining concepts, discussing competing theories, ultimately assisting the reader in making the decision of what will work for his or her organization. The author guides, but does not preach.
This book contains excellent material on security management as well. It describes the role of security policies and how they fit the security management framework. This book takes the correct but often overlooked view that security policies are a part of the chain connecting risk analysis with the selection and implementation of appropriate countermeasures.
The discussion on countermeasures is detailed and comprehensive as well. Mr. Norman has a tremendous background in security technology, and that really shines through in this part. He explains how all the countermeasures work, how they fit into a security plan, and how to measure their performance.
There is material in this book for all levels of security professional - the beginner all the way through to the experienced practitioner. It would also make an excellent textbook for any course on security management, risk analysis, security policy development, or countermeasure planning.Risk Analysis and Security Countermeasure Selection Overview
