Crisis Leadership Now: A Real-World Guide to Preparing for Threats, Disaster, Sabotage, and Scandal ReviewDuring the past decade or so, this nation has endured some significant crises. Whether you're talking about Hurricane Katrina; the 9-11 attacks; Hurricane Hugo or the Oklahoma City bombings each crisis has left its mark on our country. However, the responses to those events were different and some were handled better than others. Experts agree that two critical components are necessary for successful crisis management, and those are leadership and planning. Author and renowned crisis management consultant, Laurence Barton points out that leaders with an existing action plan are much more likely to get their organizations through a high-level crisis compared to those that don't. In his book Crisis Leadership Now, Barton weaves together a safety net of procedure, HR practices and security to help mitigate crises from occurring while simultaneously helping devise workable plans that can withstand virtually any flavor of disaster. Soundview recommends this book because many organizations take disaster planning for granted. The reality of a major crisis impacting any given organization is not merely a question of "if it will happen" but rather "when it will happen." This book can help your organization think through your options and responses before the unthinkable occurs.Crisis Leadership Now: A Real-World Guide to Preparing for Threats, Disaster, Sabotage, and Scandal Overview

360 Degrees of Influence: Get Everyone to Follow Your Lead on Your Way to the Top ReviewThe statement (chapter 2 actually) "360 Degrees of Influence starts with you" was soething I could readily identify with. Learning how to influence others requires us to understand ourselves first. Also, "Influencing the Opposite Gender for Mutual Success" was well researched with sound advice on how to get the best from blended teams. "Organizational Politics" (chapter 7) for many is a thing to avoid or fear or decide to "stay out of". Not possible, (the latter) says the author, showing instead how anyone in an organization can manage relationships effectively and communicate successfully from any department or rank in the company. Other powerful and valuable information is discussed in "10 ways to influence upper management" which gave me personally several ideas I plan on using in one-on-one or group meetings with my bosses.
Fortunately Monarth doesn't just focus his advice on the corporate world alone. He allows for all of the principles he teaches to be just as useful in outside-of-work situations that require influence and leadership in order to get closer to one's goals.
Want to know why people do crazy and irrational things? Monarth explains the latest research and shows how we can use this knowledge to better influence people, and ethically so, which I found important for myself.
Definitely going to keep this on my desk for quick references. Oh yeah, next time you hold a meeting where people need to be emotionally involved as well as intellectually, choose the smaller conference room. Monarth shows research that makes an excellent case for this!360 Degrees of Influence: Get Everyone to Follow Your Lead on Your Way to the Top Overview

The 18 Immutable Laws of Corporate Reputation: Creating, Protecting, and Repairing Your Most Valuable Asset ReviewAlsop is a senior reporter for the Wall Street Journal and I have read many of his stories over the years. I am glad that someone of his caliber has addressed the issue of corporate reputaion at a time when big business ranks about equal to politicians in public perception. Even the mafia is thought to be less sleazy!!
Alsop starts with a basic, uncontestable premise: A corporation's reputation is one of its most valuable assets. This determines how much slack a cynical public will cut it when things start to go wrong. Other assets - such as those that show up on the balance sheet - are carefully measured, tracked and managed. Reputations are not. Not even by so-called excellently managed companies.
Next Alsop lays out various 'laws' to help a company manage its reputation. The first two just talk about how important it is and how important it is to measure it. Then he becomes much more interesting as he starts laying out what a company should do build and maintain a sterling reputation.
He stresses how important it is for a company to 'live' its values and ethics and why being defensive is actually offensive. These could be bromides. What gives them value are Alsop's anecdotes drawn from a lifetime of reporting on business. These well selected stories not only illustrate his points, they also show the reader how to implement his ideas in their own situation. And there are hundreds os such stories.
For example, Alsop talks about how being socially responsible can be an important component of a sterling reputation. And he relates how Timberland does it with a range of initiatives from monitoring labor practices at its contractors' overseas factories to giving its employess the opportunity to do community service on company time. And he doesn't stop there. He tells what dozens of other companies do from Johnson & Johnson to Paul Newman's food company.
These stories and examples are, by far, the best part of the book. This is where the value resides and it is not at all difficult to take each of these examples and suitably modify it to use in your situation.
An excellent book. My one quibble is a philosophical one. I think Alsop is too easy on companies like Altria - the former Phillip Morris. Does having an exemplary ethics code with lots of employee input compensate for the fact that its core product kills when used as intended? You make up your mind on that one. Alsop shows how Altria does a lot of things right in terms of global cultural sensitivity but I would simply not have used such an example. The 18 Immutable Laws of Corporate Reputation: Creating, Protecting, and Repairing Your Most Valuable Asset Overview

The Resilient Enterprise: Overcoming Vulnerability for Competitive Advantage ReviewIn this book, MIT Professor Sheffi analyzes high-impact business disruptions, their causes and consequences. Using real life examples, he illustrates how even a small disruption in one part of a tight supply chain can result in major problems elsewhere. He discusses several risk assessment methodologies for estimating probabilities and severity of various types of losses (natural, accidental, and intentional). A brief introduction to current supply chain theory and practice follows.
The heart of this book is about specific strategies that a number of enterprises are using to reduce their vulnerability to disruptions and to build flexibility into the supply chain. Topics include early warning systems, collaboration, redundancy, product redesign, customer relations management and cultural change. Professor Sheffi illustrates how various companies have innovated and implemented these strategies. He argues that supply chain integrity and security should be as integral to enterprise management as is quality or safety.
Supply chain management innovations such as outsourcing, just-in-time delivery and supply base consolidation require corporate risk managers to develop new loss control strategies and competencies. Business competition is now based on the capabilities of the entire supply chain, not just an individual company. Risk managers must carefully look up and down the entire length of the supply chain to identify vulnerabilities and to make sure that appropriate risk controls and/or risk transfer and financing methods (e.g., contingent business interruption insurance) are in place.
The resilient enterprise recognizes that its supply chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and prepares accordingly. In today's complex business environment, disruptions somewhere along the supply chain are all but inevitable. Preparation and flexibility not only improve the odds of an enterprise's survival, but may also become a decisive competitive advantage when disruptions adversely affect rival enterprises.
As a 30+ year practitioner of corporate risk management and insurance, I recommend Yossi Sheffi's The Resilient Enterprise to all risk managers striving to integrate sound risk management theory and practice into their organization's standard operating procedures.
