Leaders Make the Future: Ten New Leadership Skills for an Uncertain World (Bk Business) ReviewBob Johansen is the former President and a current Board member of the Institute for the Future (IFTF) - an independent nonprofit think tank that has produced an annual ten-year forecast for over 40 years. Johansen explains that in a world of increasing volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA), leaders must learn new skills in order to make a better future including:
1) Maker instinct (leaders approach their leadership with commitment of a job and energy of a passionate hobby)
2) Clarity (leaders being clear about what they are making but flexible about how it gets made)
3) Dilemma Flipping (turning problems that can't be solved into opportunities)
4) Immersive Learning (learning by doing)
5) Bio-empathy (understand, respect and learn from nature)
6) Constructive depolarization (calming tense situations and bringing people from divergent cultures towards constructive engagement)
7) Quiet transparency (ability to be open and authentic about what matters to you without self-promotion)
8) Rapid Prototyping (ability to create early versions of innovations)
9) Smart mob organizing (creating, engaging and nurturing social networks)
10)Commons creating (stimulate, grow and nurture shared assets that can benefit other players)
While the preface and introduction had me looking forward to reading on, I found getting through the book challenging. The author does an effective job in explaining the "what" and the "why" but not the "how." He uses a patch work of lightly connected examples throughout the book...rather than bringing color to the leadership skill, the examples often tended to be a distraction.
Johansen concludes with a solid recap - questions you may ask yourself in evaluating your level of competence for the new leadership skills along with a self-assessment rating system. Unfortunately, getting from the introduction to chapter 10 takes some doing.

In his mind, whatever success he's attained is irrelevent to the big picture; and that's making our planet a better place to inhabit.
I'm sure all of us, from time to time, have witnessed actions of people we once trusted that made us think otherwise; whether it be shaving a stroke off their golf game to avoid losing a few bucks, double crossing us on a business deal, or worse, sabotaging a career. Once the trust has been destroyed, everything else collapses with it.
Huntsman, on the other hand, with his remarkable philosophy on life, is a shining example that successful people are measured more by their basic core values as human beings, than their net worth. Some, if they're really good; possess the ability to do it all.

Power Grab: How Obama's Green Policies Will Steal Your Freedom and Bankrupt America ReviewCharlton Heston starred in the 1973 movie "Soylent Green". The year is 2022, and we are all poor and without power, both electrical and political. Christopher Horner's book begins by looking ahead to the year 2015 and painting an eerily similar picture of an impoverished existence. The real irony here is that the sad future is created, not by man's mismanagement of earth's resources, but by one man's presidential withholding of those sources of power from society.
As stated in the book, environmentalism seeks to use the state to create scarcity as a means to exert their will. Indeed, the author contends the policies and people being instituted into our nation's government are about establishing and holding power over our lives, our very future, and that of our children. Mr. Hornor argues that "the Power Grab is to grab your power, your wealth, economic liberties and personal freedoms." A technique to attempt to do this is akin to "yelling eco-crisis in a crowded recession."
The author adds, perhaps a bit hopefully, that "...only the left are panicking as the voters head for the exit."
This book is rather heavy and yes, a bit apocalyptic but worth burning the midnight oil to read. Yet, contrary to Charlton Heston's character trapped in a drab future he cannot alter, "Power Grab" encourages the reader to grab the constitutional power reins and steer your future and that of your children's back on the course of freedom.

Poisoned for Profit: How Toxins Are Making Our Children Chronically Ill--With new information on what we can do ReviewOn the second page of the book, Michelle Lalonde of the "Montreal Gazette" writes, "If you are a little worried about the effects of toxic pollution on your kids, but need to get a lot more worried before taking action, read 'Poisoned for Profit.'" That perfectly describes me--I was a little worried before I read this, and now I'm ready to take action!
The authors present their information as a legal case, with chapters entitled, "Inquest, Indictment, Victims, etc." They present real-life victims, legal battles, corporate records, and other evidence. The book reads very much like a lawyer's case. Sometimes it is weighed down in names and titles and legalese, but for the most part it is fascinating and very convincing--extremely well researched.
Appendix A offers practical, immediate solutions to reduce the risk of children in our own houses. Appendix B is a list for further reading.
Two of my kids have autistic tendencies. I remember a toy snake my son had when he was a baby... it felt greasy and smelled like gasoline, but he loved the rubbery floppiness of the toy. It was his favorite for years. He ate it's tail off. I was concerned at the time about the odor of the thing and the fact that it was often in his mouth, but I naively trusted that our government wouldn't allow the production of unsafe toys. I doubt that toy was the sole cause of his issues, but that and many other unsafe toys, vaccines, foods allowed and encouraged by our government in the name of economic progress appear to be the cause of his problems. How do I know? In the past two years I have increasingly been using the "biomedical" approach to treating him and our other autistic child. I have altered their diets and started using organic foods and "green" household products. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! They are being cured. Kennedy Jr. carries on the passionate yet caring politics of his father, who was a one time Attorney General. The son, an environmental lawyer, makes a compelling case for the ways in which corporate interests have sought to deconstruct environmental protections over the last twenty five years. James Watt, Christine Todd Whitman, and Gale Norton--among others--all recieve deservedly harsh criticism, as these supposed stewards of nature continue to manipulate laws, rhetoric, and the truth in order to enrich corporate interests at the expense of the U.S. environment, the health of the American people, and the future of all of us. Many things in Kennedy's book were news to me (who's really behind the deceptively named "wise use" movement, for example). Although Kennedy mostly eschews partisan rhetoric, he compellingly demonstrates what a disaster the Bush administration's policy of "self-policing" has been, and how it has withheld funding in order to strip regulatory agencies of any effective power. Even more frightening, although frighteningly consistent with its policies, is the manner in which the Bush administration has pressured empolyees and scientists, and promoted bogus science in order to distort public debate so that its destructive policies can continue. If you have any concern at all for the environment, for your children, or for truth, you ought to read this book.Crimes Against Nature: How George W. The Making of Environmental Law ReviewHere, Richard J. Lazarus has delivered a very unique look at the history of environmental law from an evolutionary or holistic perspective. This book will be a valuable resource for anyone looking for an in-depth look at environmental law as a field, but without the need for tedious policy descriptions or scientific minutiae. Lazarus covers the social and political history of environmental thought and how those phenomena shaped American environmental law as we know it. Lazarus also offers rewarding coverage of the challenges faced by concerned lawmakers in a legal system that resists long-term regulatory schemes, redistributions of costs and benefits, and scientific uncertainty. He also shows how environmental law needs to remain both heavily detailed and flexibly dynamic as the natural world and knowledge about it change over time.
This holistic approach to the law is fascinating and highly insightful, but just watch out for Part III in which Lazarus adds too much unnecessary supporting material on technical specifications (Chapter 8); and derails his unique legal history with unenlightening condemnations of American consumerism and high-speed lifestyles, complete with fairly bizarre complaints about sped-up baseball games, pre-faded jeans, and internet dating services. The tail end of the book is also stretched out with many repeated points and brief introductions of post-modern concepts like "convergence" that Lazarus fails to completely explore. But overall, despite the problematic third part of the book, Lazarus has delivered a unique summary and insightful overview of a complex topic that will be of use to both concerned citizens and researchers in a variety of disciplines. A Fierce Green Fire: The American Environmental Movement ReviewThis book is very thorough in covering the entire history of the American environmental movement. It starts by describing the waste and destruction caused by the European explorers who would later colonize and settle the vast, seemingly untouched American continent. At first it seemed that nobody knew of or cared about environmental protection, but eventually a few voices started calling out for reform. People started to realize that they could not do whatever they wanted to the earth and not suffer the consequences. Out of early movements to protect wilderness lands and wildlife by organizations such as the Audobon Society and the Sierra Club, environmentalism started to increase its ranks. It also broadened its range of issues to take on pollution, toxic waste dumps, and sustainable uses of natural resources. The book describes the second wave of environmentalism as a militant and passionate cause, and the third wave as more conciliatory and willing to work with business and industry. It ends on a pessimistic note, describing the antienvironmental policies of George W. Bush and what must be done to combat these types of actions in order to protect the earth.
Overall, I liked this book. It presented the viewpoints of all different kinds of environmentalists, ranging from wildlife conservationists to adovactes of socialism, governmental regulation, anti-industry tree-huggers, conservatives, and even the radical, violent eco-thugs who blow up whaling ships. The book was somewhat biased against industry and the free market, even if the author probably wouldn't admit it. I didn't really appreciate some of the closed-minded bashing of conservative Republicans; some are really bad, such as George W. Bush, but others did help the environment, such as Teddy Roosevelt. Overall, however, this book was not completely liberal propaganda, and it was interesting to learn about where environmentalism came from and what its goals are.A Fierce Green Fire: The American Environmental Movement Overview
