The King Whisperers: Power Behind the Throne, from Rasputin to Rove ReviewAt its core The King Whisperers by Kerwin Swint is a study of the proverbial power behind the thrones of history.
Swint takes the reader on a journey through history delving into events spanning thousands of years, exploring individuals who, in varying ways, helped establish, guide, influence or control those who ruled.
At first blush one may be tempted to pass over such a work thinking it lacked focus, was too broad in its undertaking or, even that it was going to be too academic to be engaging to all but those in, well, academia. After all, Swint is an academic himself.
However, you would be wrong. On all counts.
The King Whisperers, just shy of 300 pages, is divided into 10 distinct categories based upon characteristics of each Whisperer. Each of the 10 sections profiles multiple individuals.
To address such a large number of individuals throughout history in such a short work is quite a promise to make. However, Swint delivers on this promise.
Swint populates each category with profiles of individual Whisperers and in doing so sets out some of the most remarkable tales I've read in sometime.
The starting point was logical - Niccolo di Bernardo Dei Machiavelli; however, as with all of the profiles, Swint does more than simply regurgitate history, rather he demystifies Machiavelli and allows the reader to understand that Machiavelli, while focused in his efforts, was not the most Machiavellian of those in history, either before of after him.
Throughout the book Swint moves from profile to profile allowing the reader to understand how certain individuals appeared, sometimes from no where, sometimes by self appointed divine right, sometimes through the military or traditional politics, to wield the power behind the throne. His use of categories as a vehicle to better understand the particular Whisperers' style and approach could not be better formulated.
For instance, one of his categories, Schemers, addresses individuals who literally clawed their way to the top. They lied, cheated, betrayed and rose to their respective seats of power in often less than ethical ways.
In the Schemer category Swint recounts the story of an individual famously portrayed in a Hollywood blockbuster. The portrayal was that of one who was grandiose and larger than life, but alas, as is often the case in Hollywood, the story on the big screen was anything but accurate. However as Swint explains the true story, I was left to believe that Hollywood had actually toned down the reality of a fascinating tale.
Another section of the book, the Rebels, tells the tale of one of the most renowned (or perhaps infamous) political figures of the 20th century, Che Guevara. As most of the individuals in the book are profiled in passages of 5-10 pages, I was curious as to the information that could be conveyed in such an abbreviated length. Swint, again, anticipated this concern.
While Guevara's life and activities could serve as fodder for an extended work, his exploits, failings, and his philosophy are succinctly set out in 7 pages (something Swint does throughout the book with each profile). After reading this brief passage, though I was familiar with Guevara previously, I had a renewed perspective as well as a keen understanding of the actuality and irony of his life.
In reading the different sections certain themes became apparent that allow the reader to understand how, throughout history, more often than not events leading up to critical, historically resonating events have been a collective that, in varying degree, were guided by someone other than the actual ruler, a King Whisperer.
Whether it was the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Spanish Inquisition, the rise of the Bolsheviks, Japanese Imperialism, the Crusades, or a variety of other notable events through history, the conception through to the implementation of these events was, in large part, if not completely, the end produce resulting from the work of a King Whisperer.
As the book progresses, the reader will begin to understand how each of the 10 different Whisperer categories builds upon and compliments others. To a degree, it is reasonable to believe that many of the different categories have cross-over characteristics in that a General could benefit, and likely did, from being a Silver Tongue Devil. Likewise, what other ambitious individual couldn't benefit from having a bit of Schemer at their disposal?
Men, women, military, religious, common man alike, they all have their place at the table of the King Whisperers.
There is a quote that finishes the book by H.L. Mencken which solidifies the perspective of the King Whisperers, "The urge to save humanity is almost always only a false face for the urge to rule it."
The question I had before I started the book was "Why help a ruler when you could be the ruler yourself?"
Swint answers this by allowing the reader to understand that while it is one thing to rule, it is another to have the power and be able to wield it as one sees fit. The majority of the individuals in this book had little if any desire to rule (though there are some exceptions to this) yet were addicted, sometimes with singular focus, to power. Many exercised their influence with grace and compassion, at least as they understood or believed the concepts; however, others, not so much. It is interesting to see how the lives of each of the Whisperers resolved. To me, the story of the demise of the Whisperers was as telling to me as the story of the rise to power. Their ends are sometimes tragic and sometimes deserving. Some simply fade to history. However, in the end I believe that much about the motives of the individual whispers can be found in their end as in their beginning.
Swint takes what could be a very thick subject spanning an almost impossible to manage timeframe and condenses it into a work that is overflowing with keen insight, clear understanding, wit and a page turning quality that leaves the reader wanting for more. Power of An Hour: Business and Life Mastery in One Hour A Week ReviewThis book is an amazingly thorough, dense, content-packed work that should be on every business person's bookshelf. It is a tremendous resource for business consultants and coaches as well as the business owner. Dave Lakhani offers an effective system to implement not just change, but mastery in your business and personal life.
That being said, this book is not for everyone. In some ways, this is a difficult book. The exercises that Dave leads you through are thorough and and you will end up asking yourself some hard questions. Fortunately, you only have to tackle it an hour at a time. Dave doesn't do things half-way; his attitude seems to be "Why wouldn't you want to be the best in whatever you do?" The man is ferocious.
In that regard, I think this book is brutal and will weed out all but the people most determined to get their businesses and their lives to a level of excellence. And maybe that is okay. Too many people are happy comparing themselves favorably to mediocre competition. Let the slackers read the feel-good, warm-fuzzy books. This book is designed for people who work on a level of excellence and demand more from themselves and their lives.Power of An Hour: Business and Life Mastery in One Hour A Week Overview

Le Freak: An Upside Down Story of Family, Disco, and Destiny ReviewAn excerpt in the New York Times magazine had me excited to read this autobiography, in which Nile Rodgers maintains a bemused and conversational tone. He was born to a 13 year-old mother, raised by an assortment of relatives, and ran around both coasts as a skinny, brainy, insomniac, asthmatic child with a gift for music and a knack for survival. Dealers, users, hit men all make appearances, and are taken in stride as just part of his young life.
Even if he hadn't become the successful artist and producer, his early years make for a great story, though he bounces around a bit in the telling of it. The book really comes to life when Rodgers talks about his role in the rise of disco and the world of the New York dance club scene. That part of the story reads like the fall of the Roman Empire, a last-days bacchanal.
When disco "died" (though of course, as Rodgers points out, it never really did), he could have retired forever on his earnings, but he brought his music back working as a hit-maker for artists like David Bowie, INXS, Duran Duran, Madonna, and more. He offers his experience with of music's heavy hitters, and his portraits of David Bowie, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Madonna are candid and believable. He's not dropping names; he's just talking candidly about his friends. His portraits are honest but diplomatic. In other words, even while discussing drug binges or wild times, Nile Rodgers is a gentleman.
I remembered while reading this that my sister had met him years ago while he was producing the first Dan Reed Network record in NY. She said he was quiet, funny, brilliant, and that he never seemed to sleep. He told her the pretty guys with the braids weren't doing the singing for Milli Vanilli, and I remember being shocked by that. I was impressed that she'd met him, but I really didn't understand just how impressive Nile Rodgers is until I read this book. He imparts a list of accomplishments that is mind-boggling, but he keeps that same relaxed, easy, humble tone, as if he's as surprised as anyone else by how much he's managed to accomplish.
His life's work is staggering in amount and diversity, and this book is fascinating.Le Freak: An Upside Down Story of Family, Disco, and Destiny Overview

Orbiting the Giant Hairball: A Corporate Fool's Guide to Surviving with Grace ReviewThis book deserves more than five stars.
Although I have read many excellent books about nurturing creativity and working creatively in companies, this is the first book I have read where the author has been someone who has done that repeatedly and in a variety of ways. That perspective is uniquely valuable both to those who want to have more creative jobs and those who would like to encourage creativity.
Although the analogies seem far-fetched at first (orbiting the giant hairball means taking a creative tangent and refocusing it to have relevance for the company's purpose), they serve to open your mind to thinking differently about creativity and organizations.
Although the author's key points are not summarized anywhere in the book, you will begin to get a sense of how the ideas connect together. That's useful, because otherwise why should he try to teach us so much? Except in the chapter that deals with them, any of the key observations would have been enough for a whole book on the subject. The overall theme is that our minds are subject to being too quickly anesthetized, rather than stimulated to ground-breaking insights. You'll love the story about hypnotizing hens where he introduces that concept.
One of my favorite stories in the book described when the author was asked to create an introductory course on creativity. The first session was wildly successful. The author then analyzed why it worked and created a more organized version of this course (called Grope). That sesssion didn't work as well. Then he went back to being unstructured (operating at the edge of chaos), and the course worked again. He learned from this the delicate connection between groping and rote. You need more of the former and less of the latter.
Another of my favorite stories related to the joy he experienced when he first started parachuting. But within six months, it was getting to be boring. He could only make it more exciting by taking the parachute off, but that would be suicide. On the other hand, if he never tried something new, he would be vegatating. So we want to stay somewhere between suicide and vegetation for the most effective results.
You will enjoy reading this book because it presents a fresh perspective that will stay with you. The successful point of entry is a story about children. When the author shows children about making sculpture from sheets of steel, he asks them if they are creative. All first graders raise their hands. By sixth grade, no one will say that they are creative. The pressure to be like everyone else makes the creative people want to hide. It just gets worse from there. Everyone who reads that story will remember experiences from childhood where their creativity was actively discouraged by teachers, parents, neighbors and classmates. Such a pity!
Each story is imaginatively illustrated to help you get a sense of a different reality. It also makes the material more accessible to people of all ages.
In addition to reading and changing your own behavior, this book should be shared with young people to reinforce the idea that it is desirable to be creative. This would be a good book to discuss with your coworkers, as well.

Double Tap ReviewOm Steve Martini's latest mystery, retired staff sergeant Emiliano Ruiz is in trouble. Deep trouble.
Ruiz is indicted for the murder of Madelyn Chapman, the extremely wealthy CEO of Isotenics, Inc. (situated in the hills above La Jolla, Calif.), a corporation specializing in software programs for the Pentagon's Defense Department.
The defendant's fate looks bleak, as circumstantial evidence against him mounts overwhelmingly.
San Diego defense attorney Paul Madriani and his partner/sidekick Harry Hinds have the daunting task of clearing Ruiz in this capital case involving a high-profile victim.
With the defendant stonewalling concerning a seven-year gap in his military history, and the Pentagon poised to quash evidence concerning clandestine activities at Isotenics, the deck is stacked against them. Their best hope may not be acquittal, but a mistrial.
The media have dubbed Ruiz "the Double Tap Killer," a reference to the fact that Chapman was killed with two shots to the head--less than an inch apart. A "double tap" is a technique for firing two shots in quick succession into a single target, a feat accomplished by expert military marksmen.
It doesn't help that Ruiz, a former security guard for Chapman, won awards for expert marksmanship while in the military; that Ruiz's gun (the murder weapon) is found at the crime scene, and that Ruiz, so charges diminutive prosecuting attorney Larry Templeton (aka "Tom Thumb), had been stalking Chapman shortly before her murder because she had him fired for indecent sexual advances.
Double Tap is much more than a potboiler murder mystery. It is both a work of existential depth, as Modriani poignantly describes flashbacks of his Uncle Evo's catatonic states and muses on the Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde potential in each of us, and a cautionary warning about the political implications of government intrusion into personal privacy--all done, of course, in the name of "national security."
In his Farewell Address to the Nation (Jan. 17, 1961), Dwight D. Eisenhower said, "In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence . . . by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist."
Eisenhower's warning is especially relevant in our post-9/11, post-Patriot Act world. Steve Martini's Double Tap reveals, in fictional form, the chilling prospects of a government run amuck. Imagine the power of a dictator possessing unlimited access to a virtually omniscient spyware that tracks our personal affairs and transactions.
Here's a sample of Martini's prose: "Skulk around Washington too long and you'll find the bones of Diogenes--frustrated in his lamp-lit quest for the last honest man in the American Athens--piled up somewhere in the Senate cloakroom. . . . Learning that politicians are prone to engage in shady deals when feathering their own nests has all the jarring revelation of informing us that the ancient Greeks spoke Greek."
Double Tap is Martini's eighth book featuring Paul Madriani. Previous books in this series are: Compelling Evidence, Prime Witness, Undue Influence, The Judge, The Attorney, The Jury, and The Arraignment.
Written with crystal clarity, and featuring a fast-moving plot, brilliant courtroom cross-examinations, and sobering political commentary, Double Tap is a page-turner.
Martini keeps getting better and better.Double Tap Overview

Crimes Against Nature: How George W. Bush and His Corporate Pals Are Plundering the Country and Hijacking Our Democracy ReviewRobert F. Kennedy Jr. carries on the passionate yet caring politics of his father, who was a one time Attorney General. The son, an environmental lawyer, makes a compelling case for the ways in which corporate interests have sought to deconstruct environmental protections over the last twenty five years. James Watt, Christine Todd Whitman, and Gale Norton--among others--all recieve deservedly harsh criticism, as these supposed stewards of nature continue to manipulate laws, rhetoric, and the truth in order to enrich corporate interests at the expense of the U.S. environment, the health of the American people, and the future of all of us. Many things in Kennedy's book were news to me (who's really behind the deceptively named "wise use" movement, for example). Although Kennedy mostly eschews partisan rhetoric, he compellingly demonstrates what a disaster the Bush administration's policy of "self-policing" has been, and how it has withheld funding in order to strip regulatory agencies of any effective power. Even more frightening, although frighteningly consistent with its policies, is the manner in which the Bush administration has pressured empolyees and scientists, and promoted bogus science in order to distort public debate so that its destructive policies can continue. If you have any concern at all for the environment, for your children, or for truth, you ought to read this book.Crimes Against Nature: How George W. J. Edgar Hoover: The Man and the Secrets ReviewA fascinating and comprehensive look at a complex, powerful, and manipulative man. Gentry brings to life the power that Hoover held, power bestowed on him by virtue of the secrets he held in the massive volumes of FBI files he collected over his 48 year tenure.
Hoover's far reach and influence are stunning. Most people probably have a cursory idea of Hoover's god-like legacy, but Gentry brings out the jaw dropping, scandalous details in vivid candor. Hoover had leverage over his superiors - the president and the attorney general - as well as his subordinates, Congress, Hollywood, local police jurisdictions, and civil rights leaders. His sway only increased with every year his held his office.
Gentry's account is exhaustively researched and probably the most extensive and authoritative history of Hoover in existence. He delves into the paradox that Hoover was, a rigid, aggravating, unlikeable, and deeply vindictive man to many, yet to a few close associates, he was engaging and affable, if not warm, and to him they were 100% loyal.
Hoover was no doubt a product of his time. For the calculating personality he possessed, who could ask for better career advancement opportunities than to serve in a time of the depression, bootleggers, gansters, the mafia, the Communist red scare, and the Kennedy assasinations successively. All during Hoover's time at the FBI, there was a valid argument to be made that he was simply indispensible. The desire of many in government to end his tenure was thwarted time after time, almost to a comical degree. Hoover was saved by the skin of his teeth more than once by fortuitous turns of events.
Beyond just Hoover, this book explores the dark side of politics in general. The horse trading, the double dealing, the secret deals, the blacklisting, blackmailing, break-ins, cover-ups, set-ups, take-downs, paybacks, payoffs, and the vindictiveness. It's ugly, ugly work. Most would have no idea their own government operates in such a shameful, despicable manner.
Gentry writes in an engaging narrative style that's easy to read and compelling. The book is well paced and very cohesive despite covering a wide time period and a diverse range of incidents. The book is lengthy and comprehensive. It does not skimp on details. I'm hard pressed to imagine a more thorough account.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in this period of contemporary American history or the fascinating personality that was J. Edgar Hoover.J. Edgar Hoover: The Man and the Secrets Overview
