Power of An Hour: Business and Life Mastery in One Hour A Week ReviewThis book is an amazingly thorough, dense, content-packed work that should be on every business person's bookshelf. It is a tremendous resource for business consultants and coaches as well as the business owner. Dave Lakhani offers an effective system to implement not just change, but mastery in your business and personal life.
That being said, this book is not for everyone. In some ways, this is a difficult book. The exercises that Dave leads you through are thorough and and you will end up asking yourself some hard questions. Fortunately, you only have to tackle it an hour at a time. Dave doesn't do things half-way; his attitude seems to be "Why wouldn't you want to be the best in whatever you do?" The man is ferocious.
In that regard, I think this book is brutal and will weed out all but the people most determined to get their businesses and their lives to a level of excellence. And maybe that is okay. Too many people are happy comparing themselves favorably to mediocre competition. Let the slackers read the feel-good, warm-fuzzy books. This book is designed for people who work on a level of excellence and demand more from themselves and their lives.Power of An Hour: Business and Life Mastery in One Hour A Week Overview

The Myth of Multitasking: How "Doing It All" Gets Nothing Done Review
"The Myth of Multi-tasking" is another business novel. This time about multi-tasking. My first response to this book was excitement. Finally, a new book on the subject of multi-tasking. I bet it will state all latest research, describe experiments done, check on the brain activity to physically prove multi-tasking is a myth etc etc. I was disappointed. None of the above is included in this book (ok, some quotes taken out of research) and instead it's an average story about a consultant helping a CEO.
The book describes the story of Phil who is called in my Helen for some reason. He convinces her that multi-tasking is not efficient (as she seemed to believe) and teaches her different ways of organizing her work so that she does not need to "switchtask" and becomes more effective. Of course, she believes the consultant, changes all her habits and her company and a happy end.
The book is easy to read. It's also small, you can read it in about an hour!! There is not much more than the above story in the book and some quotes from different research (of which some are actually interesting). One thing that annoyed me is that the author decided to rename "multi-tasking" to "switchtasking". I kept wondering why he couldn't call it simple "task switching" which is the common term for this.
The book didn't bother me. I got a couple of useful research quotes out of it and one interesting game to "prove" multitasking is inefficient. The book is small and therefore it might be easy to read. Don't expect much though. 3 stars. The Myth of Multitasking: How "Doing It All" Gets Nothing Done Overview

SuperMotivation: A Blueprint for Energizing Your Organization from Top to Bottom ReviewThis is the best book on motivation I have ever read. The author does an outstanding job of integrating theory and practice. Particularly fascinating is the distinction between "task" and "context." If you only read one book on motivation, this should be it!SuperMotivation: A Blueprint for Energizing Your Organization from Top to Bottom Overview

A Seat at the Table:How Top Salespeople Connect and Drive Decisions at the Executive Level ReviewA Seat at the Table is a book for the ages: A volume of advice designed for the modern salesperson who wants to distinguish himself/herself and offer potential customers cutting -edge service and competitive advantage. This book takes a different approach to selling- an approach that shifts the emphasis away from trying to offer the most product for the lowest price, over to a strategy that involves creating the most value possible for the customer.
Making connections with the people that matter most is important to any salesperson and this book effectively demonstrates what it takes to get your message across to the executives and other decision makers in any business. The executives are the ones who need to be swayed and this book effectively shows how to talk to them and how to prove to them that your product or service will create value for both your company and theirs, creating a win- win situation. Customers nowadays consider value paramount to any buying decision and this book effectively shows how a salesperson can build a partnership with customers that benefits all parties involved.
A Seat at the Table recommends taking several steps to cement the deal and the book offers many different bits of advice for the determined salesperson to follow. The book includes specific questions to ask and even samples of statements to make to a potential customer in order to improve the odds that you, the salesperson, will seal the deal. The book includes some tables and graphs as well, to illustrate key points, and it is written in an outline format, making it easy to refer back to as a reference guide and training tool for salespersons of all ages. I like the format of this book and I like that it includes examples showing exactly what approaches to take in order to complete a sale. Too often, books about selling talk a great talk, but they don't offer enough examples that explain exactly how to carry out the book's message. A Seat at the Table explains everything quite nicely, with solid organization and clear wording.
Selling has changed over the years and today's salesperson needs to approach the sale from a different perspective. The most important lesson to take from this book is that customers nowadays want more than just the best price. Customers want business assistance from the salesperson and they want to know how a particular product or service they purchase is going to add value. Salespeople can achieve this by becoming businesspeople who sell. Doing all of these things will earn the salesperson the much- coveted seat at the table; building a lasting relationship with the customer that provides benefits to all involved.

Information Overload: A System for Better Managing Everyday Data (Microsoft Executive Leadership) ReviewThis is not just an important book for today's information/knowledge worker - it's a must!
Like a "field guide", Pijpers explains both the nature of information and those of us who rely on information for successful work. He divides the book into two parts. The first part deals with information and how people process information. The second part lays out important aspects about searching for and consuming information, as well as how to be more effective in using it with other people. Effective use of Pijpers' advice involves work, but it's hard to imagine even the most experienced of today's worker won't benefit right away from his advice. The book belongs on every 21st Century worker's bookshelf.Information Overload: A System for Better Managing Everyday Data (Microsoft Executive Leadership) Overview

Organized for Success : Top Executives and CEOs Reveal the Organizing Principles That Helped Them Reach the Top ReviewOverall, a disappointing book with very little original material and with really only 2 well supported principles: (1) Get an assistant to do most of your organizing and (2) How you organize depends on your own personal style. The author's material on how to use an assistant to implement organization principles may be of value to those who actually have one, but very little of it is applicable to those who don't. And the book jumps all over the place in recommending tips and tricks, so I did not find any convergence to very many "principles." I agree, organization can be very personal, but the author seems to try to capture so many individual techniques, that to say there are organizing principles here is very much a stretch.
If you really are serious about some good solid principles with beginning to end techniques to organization, I would recommend David Allen's book Getting Things Done. If you simply want a cursory overview of many existing organizing tips and tricks, than half this book may be of value. And if you do indeed have an assistant and want to utilize him/her better, then the other half is for you. Otherwise, little or nothing new here to read.

The Unwritten Rules: The Six Skills You Need to Get Promoted to the Executive Level ReviewNot only has John Beeson skillfully solved the mystery of who gets promoted and why, but he has also armed the rest of us with the tools we need to interpret the clues around us and uncover the path to the top of our own organizations. The vivid examples he uses of talented strivers who have stumbled on the way made me cringe in recognition of similar missteps I've made or witnessed. Yet the stories of people who got it right -- and just how they did it -- provided powerful evidence that Beeson's advice is well worth heeding.
It's clear that Beeson has spent a lot of time behind closed office doors and has managed to get executives and their bosses to talk about things that would otherwise not be brought to light. He effectively draws upon this inside intelligence and his expertise in the field of leadership development and succession planning to provide his readers an indispensable guide to advancement.

Toxic Workplace: Managing Toxic Personalities and Their Systems of Power ReviewHello there,
This book is really great in that it tackles the subject of toxic people by using the three-fold strategy - instead of the old and highly unreliable approach: "Just kick this or the other person off the team and thing will improve automatically". That does not work, or at least not well. The author did a great job in explaining that it does take addressing toxic people directly, and it recommends to also deal with the aftermath (usually the confusion and power vacuum) as well as with my favorite topic: Instill a great deal of integrity, honesty, but most of all purpose into your top leadership and thus the whole organization.
I found this book so captivating that I read it on a plane ride from Arizona to Philadelphia.
