Business Intelligence Success Factors: Tools for Aligning Your Business in the Global Economy (Wiley and SAS Business Series) ReviewI highly recommend this book to anyone interested in helping to raise the consciousness within organizations and those who enjoy quietly leading by example. Olivia offers an inspirational approach to business intelligence.
Olivia's book is ideal for a book club. Within a community of readers, people can consciously slow down and reflect on all the wonderful ideas. If people only apply 5 to 10% of what they learn, from reading her book, organizational capacity will still grow immensely. When one finds ways to sow the seeds of knowledge and wisdom over a period of time within any organization, one can anticipate the joy in watching the seeds germinate and grow in the years to come.
Beyond contemplating how the broad spectrum of ideas can enrich organization behavior and optimal decision making, the concepts also offer opportunities for interpersonal reflection. This was an unanticipated consequence for me. By embracing chaos theory, acknowledging that order eventually emerges out of chaos, and appreciating systems thinking, my opportunities for personal growth have expanded.

The Drama of Leadership ReviewI love this book for its clarity and new thinking. The language is engaging and the description is clear. It take a standing on Leadership types and dare to fight the conventional wisdom of leader-vs-manager.
This is a book on the thinking about the Leadership type, which describes its stregth, needs and weakeness within corporations.
The Artist, Craftmans and Technocrats. Most readers would like to think that he/she is the crossing between Artist n Craftmans and the book do warn us on this. please double check yourself and think again honestly.
This is not a very deep book (like Mitszberg: The Rise and Fall of Strategic Thinking), but also not a shallow book (like FISH or W-M-M-CHEESE, ONE MINUTE SERIES), but just right in between. Enjoyable to read.
And if not for anything else. the above explanation of the 3 types alone would shred new lights in your view of the leaders. And worth your time invested in reading it. The other important thing to point is that Leadership Type is not teachable or even changeble, so much for the leadership seminars. ( I believe this to some extend, that entrepreneurs are similarly -mostly- BORN and not made!)
The book did not give u a HOW TO do something, but let you think about leadership adn how people differ from each others.
A mandatory reading for management leader. and Psychology student focusing on management. The Drama of Leadership Overview

CATS: The Nine Lives of Innovation ReviewCATS by Stephen Lundin
The saying goes that curiosity killed it. But in his book, CATS, Stephen Lundin turns that old adage upside down by using cat-like characteristics as an analogy for the essence of innovation.
Lundin's slim, readable book describes the nine lives (essential ingredients) of innovation. These lives are embodied in CATS, people who seek consciously to become better at innovating. Lundin asserts that it doesn't make sense to try to figure out how innovative organizations work when it's actually the individuals within an enterprise that bring about creative change. To that end, his book focuses on the nine essential factors that foster innovation:
An Friendly Environment - Reduce the clutter, noise that distract from being creative.
Being Prepared - Stay up-to-date and curious about your field.
Remembering that Innovation isn't Normal - Make opportunities to startle your routine.
Physical Provocation - Fight against normal by being curious about objects in your environment
Social Provocation - Look for and associate with people who are different from you.
Intellectual Provocation - Use imagery and the ideas of others to inspire your creativity.
Say, "How Fascinating!" - Approach failure with curiosity expecting to discover an idea that was hidden from you before.
Fail Early and Fail Well - Learning rarely happens without failure so plan to make mistakes strategically.
Having Support - Innovation leaders (Lundin calls them "Cat Wranglers") play an important role in nurturing, developing, and supporting individuals to innovate.
In CATS, a chapter is devoted to each of the nine lives. Concepts are illustrated with straight forward examples, some of which span several of the nine lives so readers quickly appreciate the holistic nature of the innovative process. Lundin also takes some time to identify and demystify the challenges to innovation that tend to block our creativity.
Not content with theory, Lundin seems bent on provoking readers to boost their own innovative abilities. Chapters at the end of the book offer creativity tools, concepts, practice activities, and the opportunity to earn an innovation CAT Belt. And you can find more CAT culture on the web.

Orbiting the Giant Hairball: A Corporate Fool's Guide to Surviving with Grace ReviewThis book deserves more than five stars.
Although I have read many excellent books about nurturing creativity and working creatively in companies, this is the first book I have read where the author has been someone who has done that repeatedly and in a variety of ways. That perspective is uniquely valuable both to those who want to have more creative jobs and those who would like to encourage creativity.
Although the analogies seem far-fetched at first (orbiting the giant hairball means taking a creative tangent and refocusing it to have relevance for the company's purpose), they serve to open your mind to thinking differently about creativity and organizations.
Although the author's key points are not summarized anywhere in the book, you will begin to get a sense of how the ideas connect together. That's useful, because otherwise why should he try to teach us so much? Except in the chapter that deals with them, any of the key observations would have been enough for a whole book on the subject. The overall theme is that our minds are subject to being too quickly anesthetized, rather than stimulated to ground-breaking insights. You'll love the story about hypnotizing hens where he introduces that concept.
One of my favorite stories in the book described when the author was asked to create an introductory course on creativity. The first session was wildly successful. The author then analyzed why it worked and created a more organized version of this course (called Grope). That sesssion didn't work as well. Then he went back to being unstructured (operating at the edge of chaos), and the course worked again. He learned from this the delicate connection between groping and rote. You need more of the former and less of the latter.
Another of my favorite stories related to the joy he experienced when he first started parachuting. But within six months, it was getting to be boring. He could only make it more exciting by taking the parachute off, but that would be suicide. On the other hand, if he never tried something new, he would be vegatating. So we want to stay somewhere between suicide and vegetation for the most effective results.
You will enjoy reading this book because it presents a fresh perspective that will stay with you. The successful point of entry is a story about children. When the author shows children about making sculpture from sheets of steel, he asks them if they are creative. All first graders raise their hands. By sixth grade, no one will say that they are creative. The pressure to be like everyone else makes the creative people want to hide. It just gets worse from there. Everyone who reads that story will remember experiences from childhood where their creativity was actively discouraged by teachers, parents, neighbors and classmates. Such a pity!
Each story is imaginatively illustrated to help you get a sense of a different reality. It also makes the material more accessible to people of all ages.
In addition to reading and changing your own behavior, this book should be shared with young people to reinforce the idea that it is desirable to be creative. This would be a good book to discuss with your coworkers, as well.

The Will to Lead: Running a Business With a Network of Leaders ReviewToo many book talk about leadership with hyperbole and abstraction. They view leadership as a set of mechanical traits that one can possess, or they perform hero worship by telling stories about various leaders. This book does neither.
Bower provides the right amount of stories as well as his views on what it takes to lead. The books conversational style and well thoughtout ideas make it well worth the time. This work causes introspection that is more valuable and more action oriented than the other tomes on leadership, self help, etc.The Will to Lead: Running a Business With a Network of Leaders Overview

The Accidental Creative: How to Be Brilliant at a Moment's Notice ReviewAs soon as I finished reading this, I bought four more copies for my writer friends. This book will serve creative professionals and dedicated hobbyists of all stripes, from writers, painters, and graphic designers to design engineers and computer programmers.
This book will help you bring a thoughtful structure to your every day creative work. It's work in the best way; Todd teaches you how to examine your life as a whole to make sure that you have the key elements necessary to support your creating over the long term.
So often I find myself exhausted from a long day at work, with little energy left to give to my own personal art. After reading the book I've made some small, intentional changes to my daily habits and I've been excited to find I have so much more left in the tank for my writing and creating sessions. I even find myself waking up early, filled with new ideas. That's in the short term; I'm excited for the long term change to my production.
This book stands on its own (no knowledge of the podcast necessary), but fans of the podcast will especially love this book! It's definitely money well spent and I even find that it is helping me to synthesize the ideas from other creative revolution books like Daniel Pink's "A Whole New Mind." The book has earned a spot on my desk, not on my bookshelf. The Accidental Creative: How to Be Brilliant at a Moment's Notice Overview

The New How: Creating Business Solutions Through Collaborative Strategy ReviewI rarely say "must read", but this is a rare book.
Nilofer Merchant has accomplished what few business writers have:
- Implementing the ideas in this book will substantially transform organizations.
- These transformations will make the organizations simultaneously more competitive AND better places to work.
- Leaders at all levels can apply these learnings, although I most want this book to get into the hands of C-levels (the world hasn't changed yet!) and those that advise them.
- The book is so well-written that there's a good chance that readers will actually stay with it, remember it, refer back, and work toward the changes recommended.
Nilofer, former star performer at Apple and Autodesk, now strategy consultant to high-tech CEOs, has one foot grounded in the top-down reality of today's large organizations and another stepping forward into the more networked, collaborative, far more agile world of tomorrow's successful companies.
As an executive coach with roots in corporate strategy, I applaud Nilofer's theme that people at all levels in your organization have knowledge, insight, and solution-finding smarts that go largely untapped as companies currently set strategy and navigate fast-moving markets to deliver. For all the talk of "talent management" people at mid and front-line levels are seldom engaged in the decisions that matter most. This has to change, and here is your roadmap.
I rate this book, along with Heifetz & Lansky's "Practice of Adaptive Leadership", as highest-value reading that give me, at the opening of this perilous decade, the most optimism that people in big organizations can get their acts together and thrive. The New How: Creating Business Solutions Through Collaborative Strategy Overview

Far from a dry, academic set of theories and observations, Grabbing Lightning is very actionable in your organization. A key task is enlisting support at several levels, this book is approachable and understandable, providing a common language to foster alignment. It's hard to imagine that not too many years ago, most companies didn't have a dedicated marketing function. I believe not too many years from now, intentional innovation will be as intrinsic to the enterprise as many functions we now take for granted. The Sources of Innovation (The Executive Bookshelf from the Sloan Management Review) ReviewI was shocked that I am the first person to review this book because, by now, Prof. Eric von Hippel's book is a classic in the field of research into the causes of innovation. One of von Hippel's key arguments in this book -- as well as in subsequent research and publications -- is that a lot of innovation comes from users of products and services. As users find new uses or new needs for products and services, producers often innovate to meet those needs. While that may seem obvious, this book was one of the first works to verify it in a scientific and rigorous way. Much more surprising than the conclusion just presented is how von Hippel found that users themselves often made the modifications or created new products and processes that lead to innovation. This book belongs in the library of anyone interested in innovation: scientists, engineers, economists, and businesspeople. The Sources of Innovation (The Executive Bookshelf from the Sloan Management Review) Overview

A Seat at the Table:How Top Salespeople Connect and Drive Decisions at the Executive Level ReviewA Seat at the Table is a book for the ages: A volume of advice designed for the modern salesperson who wants to distinguish himself/herself and offer potential customers cutting -edge service and competitive advantage. This book takes a different approach to selling- an approach that shifts the emphasis away from trying to offer the most product for the lowest price, over to a strategy that involves creating the most value possible for the customer.
Making connections with the people that matter most is important to any salesperson and this book effectively demonstrates what it takes to get your message across to the executives and other decision makers in any business. The executives are the ones who need to be swayed and this book effectively shows how to talk to them and how to prove to them that your product or service will create value for both your company and theirs, creating a win- win situation. Customers nowadays consider value paramount to any buying decision and this book effectively shows how a salesperson can build a partnership with customers that benefits all parties involved.
A Seat at the Table recommends taking several steps to cement the deal and the book offers many different bits of advice for the determined salesperson to follow. The book includes specific questions to ask and even samples of statements to make to a potential customer in order to improve the odds that you, the salesperson, will seal the deal. The book includes some tables and graphs as well, to illustrate key points, and it is written in an outline format, making it easy to refer back to as a reference guide and training tool for salespersons of all ages. I like the format of this book and I like that it includes examples showing exactly what approaches to take in order to complete a sale. Too often, books about selling talk a great talk, but they don't offer enough examples that explain exactly how to carry out the book's message. A Seat at the Table explains everything quite nicely, with solid organization and clear wording.
Selling has changed over the years and today's salesperson needs to approach the sale from a different perspective. The most important lesson to take from this book is that customers nowadays want more than just the best price. Customers want business assistance from the salesperson and they want to know how a particular product or service they purchase is going to add value. Salespeople can achieve this by becoming businesspeople who sell. Doing all of these things will earn the salesperson the much- coveted seat at the table; building a lasting relationship with the customer that provides benefits to all involved.

Uniting the Virtual Workforce: Transforming Leadership and Innovation in the Globally Integrated Enterprise (Microsoft Executive Leadership Series) ReviewWorking in a large, US-based corporation that has taken an accelerated path toward globalization in the last three years, I have come to realize that our ability to work together effectively across distance and across silos is key to our success.
I have read several books on the topic of global teamwork, and while I have learned a lot from each, this one above others does a great job of pulling all the relevant elements together into a single, coherent model that I find myself refering to again and again when I look at global teams in the company.
I have found the approach presented here very helpful in the sense that it goes beyond theory and provides tools and processes that can be put into practice, including tables, lists and worksheets.
The following aspects are presented clearly:
1. The importance of virtual distance and the impact it has on the team's bottom line
2. How to analyze virtual distance in a team
3. How to identify critical areas of improvement
4. Suggestions on how to improve in those areas
The model and process are building on extensive research and this is a refreshing approach, looking at other books on the subject that seem to be based mostly on anecdotal experiences.
Even though the title implies the model presented here is specific to global organizations, I would say it an asset to anyone working in any kind of organization above a certain size.
I think this book is a great read, whether you are a part of your company's HR organization or just leading in a distributed setting.
Highly recommended.Uniting the Virtual Workforce: Transforming Leadership and Innovation in the Globally Integrated Enterprise (Microsoft Executive Leadership Series) Overview

Young World Rising: How Youth Technology and Entrepreneurship are Changing the World from the Bottom Up (Microsoft Executive Leadership Series) ReviewYoung World Rising is undoubtedly one of the best books that I have read in years. This book is a very good read for anyone trying to decipher changing dynamics of demographics, technology and globalization and how these factors are creating new opportunities for poor young world and the old world economies. It opens up your mind as it explores how the next generation's approaches and capabilities of addressing 21st centaury challenges are different and unique. Young World Rising, unravels how new digital global economy is allowing anyone with a breakthrough idea, strategy, and great business model to succeed, irrespective of their background and location. The author, Rob Salkowitz, gives numerous inspirational examples of social/individual entrepreneurs from Ghana, Colombia, Argentina, Philippines and India that have found their ways in the global economy and are successful examples to follow today, such as a story of Suhas Gopinath, who became the youngest member of World Economic Forum at age of 21 by building Web sites for businesses in the U.S. (started his business at age 14 from a Cybercafe)!
Another case study that intrigued my interest is of three entrepreneurs from the mountains of coffee-growing region of Colombia, who created an innovative touch-screen display to enable visually-impaired students to experience online educational material. The solution was not developed in any high-tech corporate lab. Instead, it was created by students, who are generally expected to start a family and grow coffee, as a prototype for a thesis in computer science. These stories not only give hope but also reiterate that age and place is no barrier to innovation.
I thought this book is a very good read for global executives, who are looking to penetrate the BOP markets. Also, there are many fascinating theories and statistics that suggest why China is not part of the Young World Rising discussion (which was very interesting to read) while elaborating on what are the forces that are reshaping the world. Salkowitz explains in his book that the "Old World" and the "Young World" are not necessarily in competition - they each need each other to make sure the human race can survive as we hit the peak planetary population of ~10 billion by mid-century.
The book is full of interesting information and point of views that you would not find in any of your typical news sources; YWR is among one of those books that you can't really put down, but when you do, you come back for more really quickly. I strongly recommend this book to anyone, really enjoyed reading it a great deal!.Young World Rising: How Youth Technology and Entrepreneurship are Changing the World from the Bottom Up (Microsoft Executive Leadership Series) Overview

Innovation Leaders: How Senior Executives Stimulate, Steer and Sustain Innovation ReviewInnovation capacity in any enterprise depends on specific leadership and management practices. These practices serve to stimulate, guide, engage and sustain innovation. Deschamps provides a deep and insightful analysis of innovation leadership as it applies to different environments and strategic constructs. This is an excellent framework for enterprise development.
Putting a face on everyday leadership practice is part of the author's lesson. Innovation leadership is generated from the executive ranks to the front line efforts of the organization. This balance of mindset, structure and culture shape the methods and processes of innovation, as well as the outcomes of innovation.
Deschamps sets forth a series of five process imperatives that are basic to leadership in different applications of innovation strategy:
1.Unbundle and Map the Innovation Process
2.Define and Disperse Process Management Roles
3.Assess, Evaluate and Improve Key Sub-Processes
4.Engage Cross-Functional Teams, Collaborate
5.Develop and Apply Process Indicators, Metrics
Process concerns are often where development and innovation programs go haywire. But the author connects leadership thought and behavior with strategy, process, resources, culture and structure to redefine a company's capacity for innovation. Process becomes a channel for innovation leadership.
Roughly a third of this book is dedicated to innovation models and leadership for different development imperatives. These encompass new/improved products or extensions, category innovation, business system innovation and customer experience innovation. These differences have been noted by other authors over the years, but Deschamps puts the leadership and management constructs in their proper place. That helps put the strategic agenda in focus.
This is serious reading, but it provides critical insights into the conversation on innovation strategy, leadership and structure. Further, it will explain to many corporate boards and extended organizations the practical differences between dancing with innovation and causing real innovation.

Strategic Project Portfolio Management: Enabling a Productive Organization (Microsoft Executive Leadership Series) Review
Brilliant handbook for anyone involved in project management work at any level, but particularly for those with a strategic angle. Quickly dispelled the notion that I've been employing best practice, and pointed me in the right direction about putting together a more effective project selection process. The author clearly has a great deal of working experience of portfolio management, and that means that rather than being a dry text it's a very practical guide. Rules to Break and Laws to Follow: How Your Business Can Beat the Crisis of Short-Termism (Microsoft Executive Leadership Series) ReviewI read all books from Don and Martha. "one to one future" was the first and the best book I've ever read related to CRM. "return on customers" was a first attempt to demonstrate that company value isn't necessarely equal to EBITDA and value of shares. Don and Martha introduced here the concept of long-term view vs short-termism.
With this latest book "rules to break & laws to follow" - I've read it in one day! - they follow their concept of demonstrating what real value to a company means.
I do like especially the introduction of an "employee/empowerment"-dimension which was a little bit missing until now.

Grow from Within: Mastering Corporate Entrepreneurship and Innovation ReviewWolcott and Lippitz created research-based tools for entrepreneurs within corporations to genuinely bring innovative ideas to market. My favorite is the Innovation Radar, which has different elements for corporate professionals to consider while developing their ideas. Everytime I show this radar to an entrepreneur or corporate entrepreneur, they realize they had not considered at least one of these elements.
The other areas of the book: The Four Models of Corporate Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Learning, all provide insights not normally provided by other authors, books, or conversations with experts. There are far too few skilled business professionals familiar with corporate entrepreneurship. Wolcott and Lippitz know many of this special group and have the skills to capture what the best of them accomplish, thus making plain this important art for the rest of us regular people. I highly recommend the book.

The Game-Changer: How You Can Drive Revenue and Profit Growth with Innovation ReviewAuthors A.G. Lafley and Ram Charan in "The Game-Changer" make the case that innovation - the conversion of a new idea into revenue and profits - does not have to follow conventional wisdom that small companies are better innovators because they are nimbler and have a more coherent sense of purpose. Lafley and Charan alternate throughout the book with Lafley, the operating executive, providing the "how' in how he turned around Proctor & Gamble by operationalizing innovation, and Charan, the organizational and business researcher, providing the "why" of its spectacular success.
Lafley admits to some truth in the small company stereotype but he believes larger companies can be just as innovative as small companies, if not more so. Big companies have significant advantages - scale, management capability, and resources to take risks - that should facilitate innovation. But these advantages are wasted due to layers of management that stretch decision cycle times, internal vested interests to maintain the status quo, and the lack of a growth-through-innovation process.
"Game-Changers" outlines the principles(1) of innovation Lafley developed, the how and why innovation changed P&G's game, and the steps Lafley took to operationalize innovation which has led to the consumer-industry's leading organic sales growth rate. He believes that a disciplined innovation process, like that at P&G, can be central to growth for any company, in any industry. He cautions, though, that one size does not fit all, and each company must adapt the principles to their unique circumstances.
Having spent the past 20 plus years in Silicon Valley shepherding innovative medical technologies to the market, I can personally attest that the acceleration of change today is unprecedented. There are many more opportunities today for teams like mine to disrupt and create obsolescence for larger companies. It appears that Lafley and Charan have got the principles right, and P&G appears to have gotten their application right. The remaining questions are: Will this be sustainable? Transferable? Will game-changers(2) become the next "big thing" in operational excellence?
Footnotes:
1. The principles of innovation include: motivating purpose and values; stretching goals; choiceful strategies; unique core strengths; enabling structures; consistent and reliable systems; a courageous and connected culture; and inspiring leadership.
2. A game-changer is: a visionary strategist who alters the game his business plays or conceives an entirely new game; a creator who uses innovation as the basis for sustaining profitable organic growth and consistently improving margins; a leader who understands that the consumer or customer - not the CEO - is boss; a catalyst who uses innovation to drive every element of business from strategy to organization, and from budgeting and resource allocation to selecting, rewarding, and promoting people; an integrator who sees innovation as an integrated end-to-end process, not a series of discrete steps; a breaker of chains of commoditization who creates differentiated and value-added brands and businesses through innovation; and a hardheaded humanist who sees innovation as a social process and understands that human interaction - how people talk and work together - is the key to innovation, not just technology.
