Managing At the Speed of Change ReviewAs an IT consultant and project manager, dealing with change management occurs on an almost daily basis. Sometimes change management works, and works well, but all too often it fails miserably. Here is an author who understands why this happens and how to remedy the problem.
Author Conner runs one of the foremost consulting firms devoted exclusively to change. He is experienced, and has an easy writing style, allowing you to completely focus on what he says rather than hammering through loads of hype, meaningless acronyms and technical gobbledygook. He explains clearly why change initiatives often don't seem to stay in place after the initial implementation of the change. He then offers sound recommendations on the roles and responsibilities required to execute changes, along with the various pros and cons of different infrastructures for those roles.
Conner illustrates that each of us moves through our lives at our own speed of change, and how we have the ability to enhance our skills by understanding the uniqueness of people who have effectively dealt with change. These people have a vast amount of flexibility, differentiated by being extremely focused, highly resilient, well organized, and very proactive. When people like this work within the configuration of change, leading others through the eight models in the organizational change process, constructive results are bound to happen.
This is definitely a powerful, five-star book, and one that I have no hesitation putting on my personal list of the top "must read" books for IT professionals and project managers at all levels.Managing At the Speed of Change Overview

They view leadership as a set of mechanical traits that one can possess, or they perform hero worship by telling stories about various leaders. This book does neither.
Bower provides the right amount of stories as well as his views on what it takes to lead. The books conversational style and well thoughtout ideas make it well worth the time. Assimilating New Leaders : The Key to Executive Retention ReviewHow many times have you read a book and then found yourself wishing, if only I had had this book way back when.....In this case, I kept finding myself saying, "if only I had had this book when I started this new job, I would have known that I wasn't alone in what I was going through." Apparently, the trials and frustrations of organizational politics and culture come in a common and predictable form. This book is full of insights and tips about how to build relationships and influence in an organization quickly and strategically. I found the author's description of the four stages of assimilation process to be particularly insightful. The psychology of the assimilation process really resonated with the experience I've had time and time again each time I've taken on a new job. While the author's assimilation model does not reflect radically new information about what happens when you enter a new job or company, it is full of intuitive truths about what one often forgets. After all, how many times have we repeated the experience of starting a new job, new company, joining a new team and yet how often do we learn from that experience to be more deliberate in our actions and change our behavior in a given situation to have a greater impact? Then before you know it, you've left the company, joined a new company and make the same initial mistakes you made previously. And then in hindsight, you say to yourself, "I wish I had done this differently" or that you had the power of hindsight. Well, with this book, you do. While the tactics in the book are targeted to an HR audience, the author shares a multitude of practical insights and tools to help you as a leader make decisions at those critical points, understand and analyze the political and organizational dynamics within your organization, and develop a plan for short term wins and long term impact within your organization. Rather it is a very useful tool in the process of getting a team of managers together and producing a Strategic Plan. It focuses on results whilst under a time pressure and gets you to the point of having a plan that you can work to and produce results. Although aimed at the CEO or leader I have found it works best when each member of the team is given a copy of the book so that they then understand the process being followed. Say It With Charts: The Executive's Guide to Visual Communication ReviewAlthough there were some very good points about graphics communication, this book was very deceptive when buying it. 198 pages in length, I'd say that about 160 of the pages deal with exercises and sample graphs to jog your brain with good and bad ways to represent data. There's about 30 some pages of actual "stuff" to read and absorb for tips for Visual Communications. Add to that the fact that the fonts used for the book were something that elementary school students would be accustomed to reading and you could probably boil the book down to about 10 pages front and back of normal 12 point Times Roman font. That was really the most disappointing thing about the book for me. $45 retail for a book that boils down to about 10 pages of actual reading was definitely not worth it from a simple cost/benefit analysis. The reason I gave it a 3 star rating was that it was ridiculously easy to read and understand, and it did have some very good points. I really would give it more of a 3.5 star rating independent of cost, and 2 stars cost dependent. Cost aside, the book did discuss some very good principles about presenting information for audiences and goes specifically into McKinsey's recommendations for graphics presentations. Although not an unusually exciting or groundbreaking book I did pick up one or two very good business suggestions from it, and for that reason alone, I consider the book valuable.Say It With Charts: The Executive's Guide to Visual Communication Overview

Managing to the New Regulatory Reality: Doing Business Under the Dodd-Frank Act (Wiley Finance) ReviewI thoroughly enjoyed Greg Wilson's latest work, "Managing to the New Regulatory Reality - Doing Business under the Dodd Frank Act". This is an enlightening account of the forces contributing to the 2008 financial collapse combined with a straightforward summary of the process behind the government's colossal legislative response to prevent another such tragedy. Wilson provides a clear summary of the new rules of the game, and outlines the path for managing these new realities. And he does so in plain English!
My perspective on the book is that of a senior corporate executive looking to understand this new legion of rules and how it relates to my role and responsibilities. Sarbanes - Oxley forced executives to learn about and comply with the minutia of that law. Anyone who trivialized compliance with SOX certainly got a nasty surprise. Once again learning and accommodation redux is upon us in the form of Dodd - Frank. Better inform yourself of how this works and what it means to you - it's not going away.
I related to Wilson's descriptions of the act's impact on many everyday activities having to do with credit rating agencies, consumer protection laws, board compensation committees, shareholder voices on executive pay and general shareholder protections. You will quickly see enforcement of Dodd - Frank can't be delegated to the CFO or your external auditors. Ignorance of Dodd - Frank's requirements will be no excuse for corporate non - compliance.
Senior executives should consider Wilson's book a critical part of their continuing education. It's an excellent synopsis of serious stuff.
