With the 4 capabilities defined the leader is left with the challenge of creating an environment where everyone can learn from mistakes, be problem solvers and challenge the status quo. No small feat. Like anything we want to learn or habit we want to change it means we have to practice. And practice is a cycle of act/fail/learn/adjust/act. It is also takes time and patience. In our western business culture a problem is seen as failure and patience for the long term pay off is not the norm.
Steve's examples illustrate that we need an attitude/mindset adjustment top to bottom. We need to think and behave differently. When we lead as learners and mentors we create emotional safety. With emotional safety everyone participates in seeing problems or breakdowns as an opportunity. With that possibilities and creativity emerge. Everyone benefits from being part of this continuous cycle of practicing. Everyone is engaged.
So, soak up the lessons in the book and then set a practice in place. Most importantly as a leader at any level you have to walk the talk. The standard of arrogant top down management does not align with the lessons Steve lays out in the book. Say It With Charts: The Executive's Guide to Visual Communication ReviewAlthough there were some very good points about graphics communication, this book was very deceptive when buying it. 198 pages in length, I'd say that about 160 of the pages deal with exercises and sample graphs to jog your brain with good and bad ways to represent data. There's about 30 some pages of actual "stuff" to read and absorb for tips for Visual Communications. Add to that the fact that the fonts used for the book were something that elementary school students would be accustomed to reading and you could probably boil the book down to about 10 pages front and back of normal 12 point Times Roman font. That was really the most disappointing thing about the book for me. $45 retail for a book that boils down to about 10 pages of actual reading was definitely not worth it from a simple cost/benefit analysis. The reason I gave it a 3 star rating was that it was ridiculously easy to read and understand, and it did have some very good points. I really would give it more of a 3.5 star rating independent of cost, and 2 stars cost dependent. Cost aside, the book did discuss some very good principles about presenting information for audiences and goes specifically into McKinsey's recommendations for graphics presentations. Although not an unusually exciting or groundbreaking book I did pick up one or two very good business suggestions from it, and for that reason alone, I consider the book valuable.Say It With Charts: The Executive's Guide to Visual Communication Overview

Purpura sees loss prevention as any method by which individuals or organizations can prevent and control loss of assets, whether people, money, productivity or materials, under a variety of circumstances, including crime, fire, natural disaster, error or poor management. This broad-brush approach allow the author to address traditional physical security concerns, and also newer or less-traditional threats such as terrorism, natural disaster, workplace violence, information theft, substance abuse, and adverse legal action, to mention just a few topics.
The approach to each topic includes definitions, discussions, checklists, and questions designed to stimulate critical thinking. The text includes a nice selection of illustrations and graphics.
