How to Develop and Implement a Security Master Plan Review"How to Develop and Implement a Security Master Plan" by Timothy D. Giles CRC Press ISBN 978-1-4200-8625-6 2009 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC
Purchased for a little over $70.00 with the intent that the content would assist in aspects of security planning and development, the book did not meet my expectations. To begin, I find the use of illustrations to be puzzling and inane. For example, Figure 1.2 depicts a lineup of faceless, suit-jacketed hands writing in notebooks as the writer apparently felt the need to describe `project teams'. For workplace violence, Figure 2.1 is a photograph of a mean-faced man shouting into a cell phone. Instead of supporting the content, these and other illustrations appear to be scattered throughout much like one would see in a bad Power Point presentation.
Chapter 6 attempts to provide "Security and Computer Use Standards for Employees". The author advises users to activate power-on passwords for boot-up, hard disks access as well as encrypting files, etc. While these are certainly worthwhile goals, having a disparate user base responsible for setting and maintaining these features on their systems in any sizable organization is un-manageable even with IT department assistance. The chapter also discusses the evils of Napster file sharing. In a book as recent as this - 2009, there are a number of more heinous file sharing sites that should be referenced since Napster has now been legitimatized and deals primarily in music versus filesharing. And for some reason, the seemingly generic standards specifically identify that Norton anti-virus program be used. Overall, the information security section is lacking on many levels.
Chapter 12 lays out the typical contents of a "security master plan." Interestingly, there is no mention of information security. All aspects of the master plan center around physical security including the "Security Technology Plan" section which touches on physical access control, CCTV, etc.
While the physical security aspects of the book are somewhat better than the information security content, the overall criticism is that the book tries to cover too much area and never drills down deep enough in any one topic to be of any real value in developing security plans.

He is an "expert" in the security field; however, he has no clue. I bought this book for a master's level course in Security Admin and Management. The author took newspaper clippings and formed the book. He quotes himself throughout the book. Some of the challenges he has in the book are uninformed. Throughout the book he challenges government agencies and law enforcement. In the security field, the professional must partner with those organizations. I felt he discredited himself by page 100 and at that point, I found it difficult to read. Dalton may understand management; however, security management is more than telling people how many are needed to secure a location. Model Security Policies, Plans and Procedures Review"A very promising title but lacks any thing beyond the routine.
The policies are extremely generic and only best suited for those that do not have such policies in place or are looking for a temporary place holder statement. You can glean the checklist from the table of content, and not worth much more investigation.
The plans also are best suited as a comparative checklist for what you have in place or are considering in the future. Reasonable amount of content but very academic and available already in numerous other approaches and publications. Some of them even go so far to act more of a glossary of terms rather then justification, application or measurement/review metrics.
The procedure finishes pretty much as it starts, generic and non-specific. The worst elements are that fact that much of the content now is only relevant to domestic operations within the US or other limited jurisdictions.
If your starting out or not done this before, add this to your library and read it at least once. From there, adapt and evolve to be more relevant to your organization and contemporary to better add value to the business to which you are contributing to their profitability. Metrics and Methods for Security Risk Management ReviewThis is a complete and informative book for a wide range of risk management topics. Most technical books contain at least a bit of useless filler and I didn't find that to be the case here at all -- it is expert, informative, and well written. I keep it by my desk and have found myself referring to it often for fundamental methodologies and metrics of risk analysis.
Keep in mind that the book focuses more on traditional security risk management, as in "likelihood, vulnerability, impact" types of assessment, and less on risk assessment and prediction technology (as can be found in some of the better SIEM tools out there). In fact - there is a lot of focus on physical security and less on cyber security - however the methods hold true. The lack of reference to modern tools, etc. is unfortunate but not a deal breaker for me -- as I said the methods and approaches are what this book is for, and those are presented in scientific detail.Metrics and Methods for Security Risk Management Overview

Effective Physical Security, Third Edition ReviewI'm not an expert in physical security--I like to think of myself in an expert in information security. An understanding of physical security topics is essential for an Infosec consultant, but consultants and CISSP test candidates looking for information on this subject don't really know where to turn.
This book was suggested to me by another CISSP and I found it useful. The book, which is really a set of essays by multiple authors, including Fennelly, is split into three sections: Design, Equipment, and Operations. It includes lengthy discussions of building construction, lighting and fencing, and far more about locks than I ever wanted to know. Many checklists on several different subject areas are included, although not all of the checklist items are necessarily explained somewhere in the book. Several very detailed glossaries are included, although they are unfortunately not listed in the table of contents or index.
The chapter "Electronic Access Control and System Integration" is good, but is lifted right out of another book I recommend, "The Book on Access Control," by Konicek and Little. The chapter "Physical Access Control for Computer Areas," taken from John M. Carroll's computer security text is excellent. I highly recommend the chapter "Approaches to Physical Security" by Gigliotti and Jason. Infosec professionals will feel at home with the discussion of threat analysis, planning, cost justification, and layering. Besides being a useful essay on physical security, there is a lot of value to the Infosec professional in learning how related disciplines approach similar problems.
Chapter 2, the author's 11-page essay on conducting security surveys, is not only a useful guide to that subject, but it also contains wise advice that should be helpful for a professional in any discipline: "Only when you have developed the ability to visualize the potential for criminal activity will you become an effective crime scene surveyor."Overall, the book seems pretty solid, so I'm putting it on my must-buy list for security practitioners.Effective Physical Security, Third Edition Overview

Mary Lynn Garcia is to be congratulated on producing a book on physical protection systems that is design-based and is driven by principle rather than application. As a senior member of the technical staff at Sandia National laboratories, Mary Lynn Garcia is well placed to have knowledge of best practice in design of systems, and the development of principles of asset protection. This book is markedly unique from other security publications on the market as it provides a well-structured and rigorous discussion of the major components of the principles of the protection of assets. The book entitled The Design and Evaluation of Physical Protection Systems by Mary Lynn Garcia has raised the standard of security references and texts to new quantum levels of quality and detail.
The design and evaluation process for physical protection systems is presented early in the book and provides astructured approach to the protection of assets. I am personally pleased to see that the defence in depth strategy of detection, delay and response has been applied as the foundation for the structured approaches to asset protection. The chosen approach features the major components of System Objectives, Design of Physical Protection Systems, and Analysis and Evaluation. This structure has the capacity to direct the readerr in a systematic and logical manner to the desired outcomes of the defence in depth strategy. A detailed account of the systematics of asset protection allows a well=balanced account of theory and application to be presented. An attractive feature of the book is the discussion on the computer analytical models for analysis, and the relationship of risk assessment to asst protection outcomes. The book contains review questions at the conclusion of each chapter, a glossary of terms for the unfamiliar reader, and several appendices of useful information relating to threat and analysis of risk.
...This book will prove to be most valuable for a range of academic, managerial, and practitionar personnel who have responsibility for asset protection, and should be in all major libraries and acquired by everyone with an interest in physical security.

Vulnerability Assessment of Physical Protection Systems ReviewVulnerability Assessment of Physical Protection Systems is a "must have" for anyone tasked with the protection of assets. What sets this book apart from any other on the market is the systematic way it approaches the issue of vulnerability assessment. Anyone knowledgeable of the subject knows the rigor that must take place to legitimately conduct a vulnerability assessment. It is not a simple process of touring a facility and throwing money and equipment at obvious weaknesses in the system. A systematic approach is needed in which you can actually quantify improvements made. This text provides the tools to do just that.
One of the strengths of this text is the approach it uses in dealing with the problem of vulnerability assessment. The book provides a step by step process in which to conduct such an assessment. The unique feature is the depth of the coverage. The methodology which is introduced and the process involved is state of the art. The process has been used for decades to protect our country's nuclear assets but, as pointed out in the book, the same process can be used to protect any asset. The methodology and approach to assessment are the same whether you are protecting nuclear assets or any other asset that is critical to your business.
This book is a follow up to my favorite security book, Design and Evaluation of Physical Protection Systems, which was published in 2001. I have been using that text in my classes continuously since it was published and have been very pleased. Students enjoy it and really learn something from it. This new book by Mary Lynn Garcia tackles the specific issues of conducting a vulnerability assessment and issues touched on in the early book, but not at the same level. As such, this text is an excellent follow up that adds some much needed detail to this process. This book builds on the earlier book. The methodology used is the same and a reader of the earlier book will appreciate how both books complement each other.
Another key strength to this book which sets it apart from all others in the field is the approach it takes to actually test the effectiveness of a physical security system. A major plus is how the author tackles both qualitative and quantitative approaches to test the effectiveness of the system. The key is testing. The author presents the methodology in a clearly understandable fashion and provides detailed explanations of all formulas and charts used. This is a very user friendly book, but one that has great depth.
I honestly feel this book will become an instant classic. It will become the benchmark by which other security books will be measured. It just takes the discipline of security to a new level and is an important addition to the libraries of anyone tasked with security.
