Accelerating out of the Great Recession: How to Win in a Slow-Growth Economy ReviewWhile I am usually rather sceptical about Consultants who are explaining the world - this book truly does add crystal clear insights. It not only puts the financial and economic crisis into a historic perspective, it also seperates root causes from secondary fallouts, it distinguishes temporary symptoms from longlasting changes.
All very readable and easy to digest, rather entertaining - particularly the elaborate company case studies and analogies from last century - and their (non-)relevance to the current situation. I found the authors' analysis and outlook to be extremely helpful in order to define what the "new normal" we all will have to adjust to is going to look like. Mandatory reading for everyone who has to make long range and global investment decisions (or who is affected by them).Accelerating out of the Great Recession: How to Win in a Slow-Growth Economy Overview

The Bible on Leadership: From Moses to Matthew -- Management Lessons for Contemporary Leaders ReviewI have titled my review "Surprisingly Well Done" because I frankly didn't expect the quality of reading I enjoyed in this book. I'll admit to being a bit jaundiced by one book after another comparing biblical characters and ancient historical figures like Attila the Hun to today's situations and leaders. But, if AMACOM, the publishing division of the American Management Association, is presenting this book, maybe there is some substance in these pages after all.
I opened the book with apprehension, half-expecting a Bible-thumping worship of religious heroes. Surprise! I was captivated right away by the almost conversational tone of the writing that pulled me in. The messages are much more "real," than pushy. The preachiness I feared did not materialize. Instead, lessons were shared on the fundamentals of leadership, with examples from Biblical characters and modern-day corporate and political leaders.
Woolfe is obviously quite conversant with the Bible, its stories, and its lessons. I am not, so I was frankly concerned that I wouldn't have the knowledge to relate to the book's teachings and message. I found that Woolfe described enough about each character and story that I understood. The people cited-Biblical and modern, are used as vehicles for Woolfe to make his points about ten attributes of leaders: honesty and integrity, purpose, kindness and compassion, humility, communication, performance management, team development, courage, justice and fairness, and leadership development.
As you read this book, expect to pause to reflect frequently. It will be a comfortable experience, rather than an unsettling challenge to your morals. Each chapter concludes with Biblical lessons on the theme of the chapter-not religious, Biblical. It's sort of a comparison of management literature from two different eras and not at all intimidating. A good set of reference notes and an index add value to the book.
Commentary: Understandably, this book addresses Judeo-Christian culture-both in its themes and it's content and treatment. It would be interesting to see a set of these books, with similar comparisons to perceived qualities of leaders and the religious literature of the culture that supports the written heritage. The Bible on Leadership: From Moses to Matthew -- Management Lessons for Contemporary Leaders Overview

The First Campaign: Globalization, the Web, and the Race for the White House ReviewThis book is well worth reading. It shows a revolution that is taking place in political communications and can give any political person some ideas. You can gain more information on the book beyond Amazon by going to the book's web site, which has the same domain name as the title. As we watch the current political campaigns for the Presidency, you can see what Graff is talking about by going to You Tube and looking at the various different presidential campaigns on You Tube. You should also check out the main campaign sites on the web and see how they are linking to places like Myspace and You Tube. This would help you make the book come alive. I have a list of respected books relating to future watch studies on my Amazon profile for those who might want to get a larger picture of future trends. The First Campaign: Globalization, the Web, and the Race for the White House Overview

The Female Brand: Using the Female Mindset to Succeed in Business ReviewThe Female Brand breathes fresh air into the literature on women and success making it a must read for women (and most men, too). I love the focus on empowerment - with many practical and concrete strategies and tactics you can do to empower your career and dispose of habits that take you nowhere. Smart women don't want to waste time on victim thinking - and there is none of that here. Rather, the author focuses on female aptitudes to leverage. Women are notoriously bad at self-promotion and asking for more money and responsibility. But if you don't promote yourself, who will? The book shows you options - ways to toot your own horn through using story and humor, for example, that can help women cross these hurdles. While we all have our own journey, The Female Brand will show you how to succeed in your journey on your terms - so you can be yourself, achieve what you desire and have fun in the process. The Female Brand: Using the Female Mindset to Succeed in Business Overview

Think Big, Act Small: How America's Best Performing Companies Keep the Start-up Spirit Alive ReviewJennings' highly innovative, at times refreshingly unorthodox thinking was evident in his previously published books, It's Not the Big That Eat the Small...It's the Fast That Eat the Slow (co-authored with Laurence Haughton) and then Less Is More: How Great Companies Use Productivity As a Competitive Tool in Business.
As I read this volume, I was reminded of at least some of the material in Sun Tzu's The Art of War and, especially, the strategies recommended in a section called "Estimates" in Samuel B. Griffith's superb translation. For example: "All warfare is based on deception. Therefore, when capable, feign incapacity; when active, inactivity. When near, make it appear that you are far away; when far away, that you are near. Offer the enemy a bait to lure him; feign disorder and strike him. When he concentrates, prepare against him; where he is strong, avoid him. Pretend inferiority and encourage his arrogance. When he is united, divide him. Attack when he is unprepared; sally out when he does not expect you." You get the idea.
Jennings is a staunch and eloquent advocate of this principle: Do much more and do it much better, faster, and do it with less. OK, but how? The answer to that question was revealed by rigorous and extensive research which he and his two associates (Brian Solon and Greg Powell) conducted. They began with 70,000 companies as candidates for designation as the best performing companies in the U.S. Among all of them, which have increased their revenue and profits by at least 10% for ten years or longer? Only nine qualified: Cabela's, Dot Foods, Koch Industries, Medline Industries, O'Reilly Automotive, PETCO Animal Supplies, SAS Institute, Sonic Drive-in, and Strayer Education.
Back to "How?" Jennings identifies ten "Building Blocks" which, in combination, explain why each of those in an obviously mixed bag of companies has been and continues to be a best performer (i.e. among the top one-hundredth of 1% of all U.S. companies). It would be a disservice to both Jennings and to those who read this brief commentary to list them and then comment on each out of the context within which Jennings so skillfully presents them. Suffice to say that all organizations (regardless of their size or nature) need to have all ten Building Blocks as a core foundation on which to increase their revenue and profits by at least 10% and then continue to do so year after year after year.
How revealing that the CEOs whom Jennings and his research associates interviewed indicate little (if any) interest in any of Sun Tzu's deception strategies...nor in what their competitors are up to, for that matter. They seem wholly preoccupied with sticking to their own "knitting," focusing on what their companies can do best, how to do it even better, and thereby deliver even greater value to their customers. Also, each seems determined to nourish and enhance the quality of life as well as standard of living of everyone involved in the enterprise. This is precisely what Jennings means when referring to building communities, Building Block #9. Employees, customers, and allies should be viewed as "partners" and treated as such.
Ultimately, one of the most formidable challenges for those in any organization is to achieve and then maintain an appropriate balance of "thinking BIG" while "acting small." Hence the importance of Section Three, "The Quad: A Self-Evaluation and Ranking," in which Jennings "breaks down the title of the book into four scenarios, each represented by a quadrant":
TSAS Think Small, Act Small
TSAB Think Small, Act Big
TBAB Think Big, Act Big
TBAS Think Big, Act Small
He applies this template to each of the ten Building Blocks. It remains for each reader to complete the self-evaluation, one which helps to measure her or his own organization's current situation. The details of this exercise are best revealed within the text, pages 189-201.
I highly recommend this book for reasons previously indicated but also because I cannot recall a prior time since the Great Depression when it was more difficult for companies to increase their revenue and profits by at least 10% for ten years or longer. Consider these statistics which Michael Gerber shares in his recently published E-Myth Mastery: "Of the 1 million U.S. small businesses started this year [2005], more than 80% of them will be out of business within 5 years and 96% will have closed their doors before their 10th birthday." Chilling statistics indeed. Here in a single volume is a rigorous analysis of how nine quite different companies have achieved and then sustained their "full economic and human potential."
How important and potentially valuable is this book? Please re-read the statistics provided by Gerber.Think Big, Act Small: How America's Best Performing Companies Keep the Start-up Spirit Alive Overview

Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance ReviewMichael Porter is the founding father for strategies in a competitive context. This pioneering book represents some of his best thoughts on business and corporate strategy.
Chapter 1 is a summary of his first landmark book - "Competitive Strategy". So if you just want to buy one of his bestsellers, then buy "Competitive Advantage".
The book's most important contribution is the concept of the VALUE CHAIN. Today, you won't find an MBA who doesn't know this idea. This book gives you all the details on the value chain. And it even tells you exactly how the value chain is translated into his two generic strategies: Cost Leadership and Differentiation. Most strategy books devote a separate chapter to this idea. If you want to get a more than a superficial understanding of the value chain, you simply have to read Porter's book.
This book also gets to the core of how synergies are created and when diversification might work. Curiously, Porter chooses the term interrelationships for synergies (you know, a term for a nice idea that rarely occurred in practice...).
Being a business development manager, I have strategic thinking as part of my key areas. This book is still a reference guide for me. Obviously though, Porter's views cannot stand-alone.
If you're looking for critical views on Porter's ideas, then consider buying Hamel & Prahalad's "Competing for the Future" (1994) or Kim & Mauborgne's "Blue Ocean Strategy" (2005).
Beware: You have to read Porter's Harvard Business review article "What is Strategy" from 1996, if you want his own response to the critics.
Warning: You cannot work seriously with strategy without having understood Michael Porter's core concepts. And the superficial introduction by most - even advanced - strategy books won't make you competent enough to apply his ideas skilfully. Let me give you two examples:
COST STRUCTURE:
Most MBAs have learned about the value chain and cost structure analysis. But in real life I've seen very few who combine these two concepts proficiently. The real beauty in benchmarking cost structures is when you skilfully apply it to the value chain. This book tells you exactly how to do this. In practice, I've seen this approach applied very few times (except advanced strategy consultants). It may be because people often use Porter's concepts too casually...
COST DRIVERS:
Most strategy books are on drivers of differentiation - the preferred strategy choice by management gurus. And Porter does indeed help you on this issue. More importantly, this book is one of the few to tell you about the cost drivers. How many books have you read on Cost Leadership? Porter elaborates on 10 cost drivers, such as economies of scale, learning, linkages, synergies, pattern of capacity utilization, integration, timing, policies, and location.
STRATEGY IS ABOUT BEING DIFFERENT. Start out personally by reading the real thing ... it's a bargain.

The Enemies of Excellence: 7 Reasons Why We Sabotage Success ReviewThis book is required reading for any person who finds themselves in a leadership position of any magnitude. The best summary of the books comes from the author on page 88. It reads, "In this book, unlike in many other books of the kind, I have not attempted to define excellence but rather what is sabotaging it." It is a handbook on successful leadership. It is slender, easy to read, and is guaranteed to find fertile soil in any leader's life. In addition, each chapter ends with some helpful tools for application as well as direction to a website which provides even more resources for a person who wishes to implement change after reading this book.
If I had any complaint about the book it would be that it is written a little too simply and at times I find myself surprised that I am reading a book by a professional for professionals. Also, his application and examples are clearly stated, but at times I found myself desiring the author to impart more depth on each point.
Overall this book is exceedingly practical and provides keen insights from the 25 year career of a professional leadership coach in such a way that they are very accessible. I highly recommend this book.

The Power of Nice ReviewIf you bought the book or are looking at this page, you either negotiate often or think your deal-making skills can use a boost.
There are many books out there that can help and I will admit I have not read them all. But The Power of Nice worked for me.
It has some very helpful suggestions that I am actually excited to try. The Power of Nice also has some interesting exercises and stories to break-up the book.
There's no doubt that The Power of Nice was worth the price and the time to read it. I must admit, it started slowly. But the good stuff is in there and (like a tough deal) you need to make yourself stick with it. It will pay off.
If nothing else, I feel like a stronger negotiator having read the book. It has given me more confidence and more ideas on how to be a winner in making deals and working with difficult people.
Believe me, it may not change your life, but it's worth your time to get it and read it. After all, your competition may already have it on their bookcase. The Power of Nice Overview

Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors ReviewMichael E. Porter is a professor at Harvard Business School and a leading authority on Strategy and Competitiveness. He did his MBA and Ph.D from Harvard. He has served as an advisor to several business and government organizations. He was also a founder of the strategy and management consulting firm, Monitor Group.
Professor Porter is best known for his landmark books that defined the field of Strategy - Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors (1980) and Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance (1985). These books are must reads at the leading business schools.
I read Competitive Strategy (1980) for a Strategy course. It starts with a bang. On the very second page of the first chapter you will find the figure for the famous Five Forces Driving Industry Competition. While Porter did not intend this framework to be used for case interviews, in reality, this is a very important framework to know for the case interviews conducted by leading strategy and management consultancy firms. All top MBAs and anybody who has ever been hired by the best strategy and management consultancy firms knows this framework, and has probably read this book. The first chapter immediately proceeds to explaining each of the five forces:
1. Threat of new entrants
2. Intensity of rivalry among existing competitors
3. Pressure from substitute products
4. Bargaining power of buyers
5. Bargaining power of suppliers
While the first chapter alone is worth the cost of this book, I recommend it for the wisdom contained in the rest of the book. The chapters are organized under three parts (General Analytical Techniques, Generic Industry Environments, and Strategic Decisions). There are several thought provoking discussions on concepts such as A Framework for Competitor Analysis (Future goals, Assumptions, Current strategy, Capabilities), Market Signals and a Strategic Analysis of Vertical Integration.
This book is the single most important book on business strategy. It is a classic - like the management classics of Peter Drucker. As with every classic, the examples are old (not to be confused with outdated). But, the competition HP faced for electronic calculators in the 70s, it still faces for computers today. There have been several changes in the players, technology, industries, globalization, etc, but the foundation built by Porter's masterpieces are still relevant today.
Porter's second book Competitive Advantage (1985) introduced another important tool - The Value Chain. This analyzes primary activities (Inbound logistics, Operations, Outbound logistics, Marketing and Sales, Services) and support activities (Procurement, Technology development, Human resource management, Firm infrastructure) that firms must analyze to create value and competitive advantage.
If my review was helpful to you, I request you to select "Yes" so that the rating is improved and more readers will get to read it.Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors Overview

Marketing Metrics: 50+ Metrics Every Executive Should Master Review
Obviously, it is highly desirable to measure what matters and that is especially true of marketing initiatives. Here's the challenge which many (most?) readers will face after they finish reading this volume: Which metrics are the most appropriate for their specific organization? Co-authors Paul W. Farris, Neil T. Bendle, Phillip E. Pfeifer, and David J. Reibstein offer 50+ and in an ideal business world, every executive can - and will - master all of them. That is possible but highly unlikely. Fortunately, the authors offer a wealth of information and observations that can guide and inform the selection of those metrics that will enable executives to "gather and analyze basic market data, measure the core factors that drive their business models, analyze the profitability of individual customer accounts, and optimize resource allocation among increasingly fragmented media.
To the authors' substantial credit, they make effective use of a number of reader-friendly devices which enliven what would be an otherwise dull textbook and they do without compromising the integrity of research-driven insights which so many books on marketing lack. These devices include definitions, formulas, and brief descriptions of various metrics. They also include within individual chapters several sections, such as "Construction" (e.g. metrics issues concerning their formulation, application, interpretation, and strategic ramifications), "Data Sources, "Complications, and Cautions" (i.e. an analysis of the limitations of the metrics under consideration, and their potential inadequacies once executed), and "Related Metrics and Concepts" (briefly surveyed). This is by no means an "easy read" but will generously reward those who absorb and digest its material with appropriate rigor.
Although I believe this volume can be of substantial value to executives in almost all organizations (regardless of size or nature), I think it will be of greatest benefit to those - probably in larger companies -- who have an urgent need for accurate and consistent measurement of, for example, the dynamics behind their market share; the profitability of producing, pricing, selling, distributing, and servicing what they offer; and the ROI of marketing initiatives within the framework of enterprise financial metrics.
Those who share my high regard for this volume are urged to check out Enterprise Architecture As Strategy: Creating a Foundation for Business Execution by Jeanne W. Ross, Peter Weill, and David Robertson as well as Ram Charan's Know-How: The 8 Skills That Separate People Who Perform from Those Who Don't, Lynda Gratton's Hot Spots: Why Some Teams, Workplaces, and Organizations Buzz with Energy - And Others Don't, Robert J. In Marketing Metrics, four leading researchers and consultants systematically introduce today's most powerful marketing metrics. The authors show how to use a "dashboard" of metrics to view market dynamics from various perspectives, maximize accuracy, and "triangulate" to optimal solutions. Their comprehensive coverage includes measurements of promotional strategy, advertising, and distribution; customer perceptions; market share; competitors' power; margins and profits; products and portfolios; customer profitability; sales forces and channels; pricing strategies; and more. You'll learn how and when to apply each metric, and understand tradeoffs and nuances that are critical to using them successfully. The authors also demonstrate how to use marketing metrics as leading indicators, identifying crucial new opportunities and challenges. For clarity and simplicity all calculations can be performed by hand, or with basic spreadsheet techniques. In coming years, few marketers will rise to senior executive levels without deep fluency in marketing metrics. This book is the fastest, easiest way to gain that fluency.

Marketing Tools for Healthcare Executives, Second Edition ReviewPerhaps you are a manager who's new to Marketing or maybe you've been out of school for awhile and sold your college texts. Or you've gotten rusty in the same marketing rut and don't have time to crack open that 600 page academic snoozer. THIS book of How-To is easy to understand because it's down to the basics - the theories of marketing as they relate directly to marketing tools - without pages and pages of explanations before making its point. Here's the breakdown of the sections where the 30 tools will come in handy:
Part 1: Product Development & Portfolio Analysis Tools
Part 2: Target Marketing Tools
Part 3: Consumer Behavior & Product Promotions Tools
Part 4: Environmental Analysis & Competitive Assessment Tools
Part 5: Marketing Strategy & Planning Tools
And don't forget the Appendix: Introduction To Marketing; Glossary, References, Appendix.
What's a book without the traditional SWOT analysis - could never forget this one - but I forgot that I actually KNEW many of these models and how useful they can be! If you DON'T know what a SWOT is, you'll understand it very easily. This book condenses a half dozen 20-pound college texts into an easy-to-understand 200+ page reference tool that many full time marketers don't have time to read. And you don't have to read it cover to cover - just pick the section that applies to your immediate need. This IS an "easy read" and even though Fortenberry applies the tools to the healthcare industry, it's applicable to any service industry outside the healthcare microenvironment.
For the novice, the big names of the models may scare you such as:
> Leonard Berry's Success Sustainability Model
> Ries & Trout Marketing Warfare Strategies
> Raphel & Raphel Loyalty Ladder
> The PEST analysis
> Philip Kotler's Segment-by-Segment Invasion Plan
> The Blake & Mouton Sales Grid
> The Calder & Reagan Brand Design Model
> Michael Porter's Five Forces Model
> The DAGMAR Marketing Communications Spectrum
... all the big names in marketing with $10 words! - it's ok - just take a BIG BREATH and think back to high school - yes Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is even in there, too! Fortenberry will make this easier to understand.Marketing Tools for Healthcare Executives, Second Edition Overview

The Marketing Gurus: Lessons from the Best Marketing Books of All Time ReviewI had to pick a book and write a review as part of an assignment of for may graduate marketing class. Having no marketing experience I took a shot in the dark and picked this book.
I am so glad I did. Although the authors of the original full-text versions would disagree, Mr. Murray "readers digest" summaries of the book were terrific. This book allowed me a great overview of 17 marketing books in one.
For someone new to marketing it was so quick and excellent reading to get me up to speed. You'll have to wait for a experienced marketing major for their judgment.
I felt it should be required reading for anyone who wants to know more about marketing but don't have the time to read all the full-text versions.

Our Emperors Have No Clothes: Incredibly Stupid Things Corporate Executives Have Done While Reengineering, Restructuring, Downsizing, Tqming, Team-B ReviewWeiss has extensive experience reviewing the management of organizations. He gives true-to-life examples and theories, and shows the successes and/or failures of organizations. Contrary to what one might believe, the book is entertaining, humorous, and so true! Anyone who has ever trudged the 9-to-5 grind will see his organization (and its shortfalls) reflected in this book. It is an enjoyable read, a MUST for Dilbert fans. Our Emperors Have No Clothes: Incredibly Stupid Things Corporate Executives Have Done While Reengineering, Restructuring, Downsizing, Tqming, Team-B Overview

Rules to Break and Laws to Follow: How Your Business Can Beat the Crisis of Short-Termism (Microsoft Executive Leadership Series) ReviewI read all books from Don and Martha. "one to one future" was the first and the best book I've ever read related to CRM. "return on customers" was a first attempt to demonstrate that company value isn't necessarely equal to EBITDA and value of shares. Don and Martha introduced here the concept of long-term view vs short-termism.
With this latest book "rules to break & laws to follow" - I've read it in one day! - they follow their concept of demonstrating what real value to a company means.
I do like especially the introduction of an "employee/empowerment"-dimension which was a little bit missing until now.
Real great book. A must for all leaders and managers.
