A Manager's Guide to Employment Law: How to Protect Your Company and Yourself ReviewI was brand new to an upper level administration job. Immediately, there were personnel issues I never had to deal with before, leaving me lost. After reading this book, however, I feel much more comfortable with employment law. This book is an excellent introduction and one I still use as a reference. It may be too basic for employment lawyers and seasoned HR directors, but for everyone else I think it is perfect.A Manager's Guide to Employment Law: How to Protect Your Company and Yourself Overview

Code of the Executive ReviewIn ancient times, Samurai warriors lived by a rigid code known as Bushido. At the heart of this "code of life" lie forty-seven ancient principles. In his stellar book "The Code of the Executive", Don Schminke has rebirthed these ancient principles and codes, and the practice of Bushido.
"The Code of the Executive" contains ninety-eight pages of ancient text used by the Samurai warriors on a daily basis as they lived and fought. This text has been updated for use by executive managers in the 21st Century. In its entirety, this small book contains the entire code for successful leadership. Mr. Schminke offers these essential tools of life and leadership to managers throughout the world in the conferences that he conducts, now the philosophy is available to everyone in book form.
There is a myriad of books available to the business manager searching for enlightenment, interested in improving his skills, or satisfying a thirst for knowledge. Over the years I have read many of them. Unfortunately, virtually no page did I turn contain the philosophy essential to life. Not one page spoke of the foundation that we must establish before we can be successful in life. In fact, these books that I read spoke of business success as a tangibility to be acquired. Good managers do not become good managers with out a foundation. Executives can not effectively steer their organizations without Honor and Respect, without Integrity or Bravery. The principles necessary for success are not found, they are learned, they must be understood and practiced. The journey toward true leadership is profound and "The Code of the Executive" is the 21st Century Guide.
As a developing manager my journey continues. My own change, development, and growth can be traced. Mr. Schminke's book provided me with a paradigm shift of focus. My understanding of Role and Responsibility drastically changed as the Bushido introduced to me the concept of Death, and how all of the mighty principles are tightly woven around its strength. This book teaches that success is not found, the path to success cannot be memorized, and success cannot be taught. Business success coincides with life success. "The Code of the Executive" offers forty-seven principles of self fulfillment that must be learned, understood, and practiced.
Even though this book speaks in terms of the executive, it is not for a limited audience. The sooner that this book is read and the journey toward fulfillment begins the sooner that change and understanding will be realized. This journey is long and difficult. Once it begins, these principles will build the person who becomes the successful leader in life and business. I highly recommend "The Code of the Executive" as essential text for leadership training and development in all aspects of life. Students in high school or collage may never take a class as powerful as this self-study.Code of the Executive Overview

Marketing Metrics: 50+ Metrics Every Executive Should Master Review
Obviously, it is highly desirable to measure what matters and that is especially true of marketing initiatives. Here's the challenge which many (most?) readers will face after they finish reading this volume: Which metrics are the most appropriate for their specific organization? Co-authors Paul W. Farris, Neil T. Bendle, Phillip E. Pfeifer, and David J. Reibstein offer 50+ and in an ideal business world, every executive can - and will - master all of them. That is possible but highly unlikely. Fortunately, the authors offer a wealth of information and observations that can guide and inform the selection of those metrics that will enable executives to "gather and analyze basic market data, measure the core factors that drive their business models, analyze the profitability of individual customer accounts, and optimize resource allocation among increasingly fragmented media.
To the authors' substantial credit, they make effective use of a number of reader-friendly devices which enliven what would be an otherwise dull textbook and they do without compromising the integrity of research-driven insights which so many books on marketing lack. These devices include definitions, formulas, and brief descriptions of various metrics. They also include within individual chapters several sections, such as "Construction" (e.g. metrics issues concerning their formulation, application, interpretation, and strategic ramifications), "Data Sources, "Complications, and Cautions" (i.e. an analysis of the limitations of the metrics under consideration, and their potential inadequacies once executed), and "Related Metrics and Concepts" (briefly surveyed). This is by no means an "easy read" but will generously reward those who absorb and digest its material with appropriate rigor.
Although I believe this volume can be of substantial value to executives in almost all organizations (regardless of size or nature), I think it will be of greatest benefit to those - probably in larger companies -- who have an urgent need for accurate and consistent measurement of, for example, the dynamics behind their market share; the profitability of producing, pricing, selling, distributing, and servicing what they offer; and the ROI of marketing initiatives within the framework of enterprise financial metrics.
Those who share my high regard for this volume are urged to check out Enterprise Architecture As Strategy: Creating a Foundation for Business Execution by Jeanne W. Ross, Peter Weill, and David Robertson as well as Ram Charan's Know-How: The 8 Skills That Separate People Who Perform from Those Who Don't, Lynda Gratton's Hot Spots: Why Some Teams, Workplaces, and Organizations Buzz with Energy - And Others Don't, Robert J. Herbold's Seduced by Success: How the Best Companies Survive the 9 Traps of Winning, Jack Alexander's Performance Dashboards and Analysis for Value Creation, and Michael Useem's The Go Point: When It's Time to Decide--Knowing What to Do and When to Do It.Marketing Metrics: 50+ Metrics Every Executive Should Master OverviewFew marketers recognize the extraordinary range of metrics now available for evaluating their strategies and tactics. In Marketing Metrics, four leading researchers and consultants systematically introduce today's most powerful marketing metrics. The authors show how to use a "dashboard" of metrics to view market dynamics from various perspectives, maximize accuracy, and "triangulate" to optimal solutions. Their comprehensive coverage includes measurements of promotional strategy, advertising, and distribution; customer perceptions; market share; competitors' power; margins and profits; products and portfolios; customer profitability; sales forces and channels; pricing strategies; and more. You'll learn how and when to apply each metric, and understand tradeoffs and nuances that are critical to using them successfully. The authors also demonstrate how to use marketing metrics as leading indicators, identifying crucial new opportunities and challenges. For clarity and simplicity all calculations can be performed by hand, or with basic spreadsheet techniques. In coming years, few marketers will rise to senior executive levels without deep fluency in marketing metrics. This book is the fastest, easiest way to gain that fluency.

Choosing the Right Legal Form of Business: The Complete Guide to Becoming a Sole Proprietor, Partnership,  LLC, or Corporation ReviewBeing an independent designer, (and although this book had a plethora of tips), the third chapter was by and far the most important part of this book for me: sole proprietorship of your own company. This part did re-affirm what I already knew and experienced thus far and shed some helpful insight on what to prepare for in the future. This book threads the needle of helping business people of all types from independents like myself, to larger businesses with much more on their plates such as managing stock and the legal ramifications of expanding your enterprise and other important matters. It's very simple to follow, and contains only the most useful information. No filler here!
I could understand if the book *might* seem too general as within 290 pages it covers a one-man venture to corporations, and everything in between. (Including partnerships & LLC's) However, when it covers YOUR intended form of business, it zeroes in like a missile! No matter what your business style might be, everyone essentially has to take care of critical items such as taxes, laying out your services, making a business plan, and keeping well within the laws of your state. As someone who works from home as an independent, I certainly learned a few things, as I believe there is enough data to help even corporate-owning big-wigs!Choosing the Right Legal Form of Business: The Complete Guide to Becoming a Sole Proprietor, Partnership,  LLC, or Corporation Overview

The Franchise Fraud: How To Protect Yourself Before And After You Invest ReviewThis book is about the business of selling franchises. It's about how the franchise sellors make money by selling, and by collecting fees, from the work of others. It shows you how they support this money machine with minimal risk to themselves and maximum risk to you. All they want to do is collect your money and have you either go away, be hog tied by their contracts, or be shut up by their laywers. It is not about how this industry is set up for your benefit.
I bought this book because I was thinking of getting involved a franchise. I had reasonable amount of money to spend and they all seemed to love me. At least untill I started using the information in this book. Somehow they all drifted off. Alas! Alack! Was it something I said? More like the things I wanted to know first.
This book will teach you how to protect yourself before you invest. It highlights the hidden holes in contracts, informs you about the one sided (not yours) legal system of franchising, and bluntly points out how you're on your own. I'll bet you didn't even know that they're not required to give you information on failure rates, or, how they're calculated.
Ask them the hard questions contained in this book. If you get good answers to your questions, and they're still around after you get them, find me.The Franchise Fraud: How To Protect Yourself Before And After You Invest Overview
