Bury My Heart at Conference Room B: The Unbeatable Impact of Truly Committed Managers ReviewThis book captures what so many hearts struggle to express. I know this content can have a profound impact on the leadership ethos of large corporations, but I've also been challenged to bring it to life in the small space I inhabit. Putting family and integrity at the top of the list with my clients, employees, family and friends is a tough challenge. I've been rejuvenated to keep on trying by this pragmatic, sarcastic, bad boy/good guy book.
Rare is a book that is both inspirational and practical. This one is. It goes on my leadership shelf next to The Power Principle, Principle-Centered Leadership, A Leader's Legacy and The Making of A Leader. Select company. Well-deserved.
Thanks, Stan.Bury My Heart at Conference Room B: The Unbeatable Impact of Truly Committed Managers Overview

EXECUTIVE SUITE. ReviewCameron Hawley's "Executive Suite" is an exciting novel about what it really takes to succeed in business.
The businessman is usually presented in fiction as a rapacious looter who will do anything, no matter how criminal, to satisfy his lust for money. Success in business, according to this stereotype, goes to the one who combines the most intelligence with the least scruples. "Executive Suite" is remarkable in that it presents an utterly different view of businessmen and of success in business. Business is presented as an admirable pursuit of honorable men. Success in business does not come from lust for money and power, but from the posession of a creative vision. It is the businessman with a love for his work, and a vision of what it could be, who has the drive and passion to be a success. This view of business is central to "Executive Suite" and the development and resolution of the plot are dictated by it.
The story follows the struggle to select a new president of a furniture company after the company's president dies suddenly. Each of the contenders represents a different view of what matters in business. The struggle between these men is a contest between these views. And the man who ultimately wins, wins by convincing the others that his view is right.
Cameron Hawley was a business executive for many years before he became a novelist. With this book he does right by both of his professions.EXECUTIVE SUITE. Overview

Code of the Executive ReviewIn ancient times, Samurai warriors lived by a rigid code known as Bushido. At the heart of this "code of life" lie forty-seven ancient principles. In his stellar book "The Code of the Executive", Don Schminke has rebirthed these ancient principles and codes, and the practice of Bushido.
"The Code of the Executive" contains ninety-eight pages of ancient text used by the Samurai warriors on a daily basis as they lived and fought. This text has been updated for use by executive managers in the 21st Century. In its entirety, this small book contains the entire code for successful leadership. Mr. Schminke offers these essential tools of life and leadership to managers throughout the world in the conferences that he conducts, now the philosophy is available to everyone in book form.
There is a myriad of books available to the business manager searching for enlightenment, interested in improving his skills, or satisfying a thirst for knowledge. Over the years I have read many of them. Unfortunately, virtually no page did I turn contain the philosophy essential to life. Not one page spoke of the foundation that we must establish before we can be successful in life. In fact, these books that I read spoke of business success as a tangibility to be acquired. Good managers do not become good managers with out a foundation. Executives can not effectively steer their organizations without Honor and Respect, without Integrity or Bravery. The principles necessary for success are not found, they are learned, they must be understood and practiced. The journey toward true leadership is profound and "The Code of the Executive" is the 21st Century Guide.
As a developing manager my journey continues. My own change, development, and growth can be traced. Mr. Schminke's book provided me with a paradigm shift of focus. My understanding of Role and Responsibility drastically changed as the Bushido introduced to me the concept of Death, and how all of the mighty principles are tightly woven around its strength. This book teaches that success is not found, the path to success cannot be memorized, and success cannot be taught. Business success coincides with life success. "The Code of the Executive" offers forty-seven principles of self fulfillment that must be learned, understood, and practiced.
Even though this book speaks in terms of the executive, it is not for a limited audience. The sooner that this book is read and the journey toward fulfillment begins the sooner that change and understanding will be realized. This journey is long and difficult. Once it begins, these principles will build the person who becomes the successful leader in life and business. I highly recommend "The Code of the Executive" as essential text for leadership training and development in all aspects of life. Students in high school or collage may never take a class as powerful as this self-study.Code of the Executive Overview

Derailed: Five Lessons Learned from Catastrophic Failures of Leadership (NelsonFree) ReviewAs a pastor, I appreciate reading good books on developing and maintaining healthy leadership. I believe such books help me in the important task of leading my congregation on a relational human level while doing my main work of shepherding them in Christ on a spiritual level. "Derailed" has found a spot on my shelf of valuable leadership books.
In "Derailed" Tim Irwin has brought a compelling format to a well-known topic. There is no doubt that leadership books are full of exhortations to character as being the bedrock of leadership, but Tim's format of first profiling six highly visible leadership failures brings a new, gritty twist to the subject. The profiles served as a fun-house mirror, enabling me to see my own failures magnified to a grotesque level. The stories allowed me to see exactly how such failures cause a leadership derailment even before I got to the main content of the book.As such, Tim's profiling in the first half of the book serves the second half (where he blends information with personal application) exceptionally well.
But without a doubt, it's the second half of the book where this book earned its spot on my shelf. Tim's understanding of the dimensions of character (authenticity, self-management, humility, and courage) bring what is normally a vague, ethereal quality down into measurable, quantifiable bedrock that a leader can actually stand on. And then, when he finishes up the book with simple instructions on developing specific "heart habits" in order to avoid leadership derailing, he puts that all-important factor of personal application to good and practical use.
All in all, Tim Irwin has a solid and readable leadership book in "Derailed". I recommend it.Derailed: Five Lessons Learned from Catastrophic Failures of Leadership (NelsonFree) Overview

No Mind Left Behind: Understanding and Fostering Executive Control--The Eight Essential Brain Skills Every Child Needs to Thrive ReviewI was a big fan of Cox's other book, Boys of Few Words. Despite the technical subtitle, I picked this up and was so happy I did. Cox's strategies for helping kids is right on target, and should be required reading for every teacher and classroom volunteer (like me) on the planet.
Drawing on recent brain research, Cox makes a powerful argument that much of what we label "ADHD" (and other behavior or learning problems) stems from under-developed "executive control" skills. These are skills that develop at different rates in different children, sometimes up to the early twenties. The bottom line is that we may be unnecessarily medicating and reprimanding children who just need some extra time and attention to catch up. According to Cox, more holistic interventions can "rewire" a growing brain and help all kids, no matter where they start, be more successful.
Cox is a child advocate who shows that what might look like "character faults" (bad attitudes, disorganization, laziness, etc.) are often (although not always) simply brain processing problems. He clarifies "which is which" with sound reasoning. His suggestions are research-based and practical, and his cheerful and witty prose (including some hilarious vignettes that every parent will identify with) make this a fast and fun read. Highly recommended. No Mind Left Behind: Understanding and Fostering Executive Control--The Eight Essential Brain Skills Every Child Needs to Thrive Overview

The Ideal Executive (The Leadership Trilogy, Volume 1) ReviewLeadership, in the Adizes worldview, is a team sport. Even the brashest and most pushy leaders need support from key followers. It may not look like a team from the outside, but the complexities of organizational life are such that one person acting alone cannot optimally deal with all of the challenges that managers face. The reality is, some problems will come along that you are great at solving, some problems will come along that you are ok at solving, and some will come along that you'd be much better off letting somebody else (who is great at it) deal with.
This book gets deep down into the details of exactly how this works on management teams, and how to build teams with people who have different kinds of leadership/management genius. It teaches you how the careful fact-checker can get along with the intuitive opportunity hound, synergizing their talents without driving each other totally insane! Adizes presents a typology that help everyone on the team understand and respect each other, communicate with each other and work together, making good decisions while resisting a culture of conformity. Instead, a vibrant leadership culture of mutual respect of differences becomes the norm for people who learn and apply these ideas on the job.
This book is an update to Dr. Adizes' earlier book entitled How To Solve The Mismanagement Crisis: Diagnosis and Treatment of Management Problems - also highly recommended. Adizes ideas about leadership teams is part of the larger conceptual framework of the Adizes management methodology. Core ideas are further developed in Mastering Change, and in much more detail in Managing Corporate Lifecycles. (Full disclosure: I've been so stimulated by core Adizes ideas that I've written my own book about just one of his ideas - The Structure of Concern: A Challenge for Thinkers, on sale here but also available for free online in soft copy from Scribd and other online repositories.)
I use this book as a textbook on leadership styles for self-analysis and team-building in corporate leadership development programs which I run. Students include managers and non-managers alike. Many students say the book has helped them not only at work, but in their marriages and as parents as well! It really presents a kind of deep psychology for collaboration with respect for (and leverage of) differences. It's also really good for people who are trying to plan out their career paths. It helps validate what you do as important, helps you realize you don't have to be good at everything, and it helps you target the kinds of jobs you might be most happy doing in the future. So even below the executive level, this book has something to offer every professional and manager in today's workplace. The Ideal Executive (The Leadership Trilogy, Volume 1) Overview

The Executive and the Elephant: A Leader's Guide for Building Inner Excellence ReviewThis was a fascinating book that I won in a contest on MichaelHyatt.com. Often, when Michael does a book review, he gives away copies of the book to the people who read his blog (another reason to read his blog). The book is a leadership book... but personal leadership, instead of managerial leadership. Leading yourself is the first step to leading others; if you're not good at leading yourself, you won't be good at leading others.
Basically, each person has two "natures" inside of them: one that wants to follow your own base instincts (the inner elephant), and one that makes rationale, reasoned decisions (the inner executive)-see Romans 7:14-25 for a biblical explanation. When we're born, all we do is follow the urges of the inner elephant. As we grow, we can learn to make decisions that will tame the inner elephant, and make us better people. We take hold of the things we should do, and we let our inner executive lead. But what are some concrete things we can do to tame the inner elephant, and let our inner executive take over? Here are a couple of things that I gleaned from this book:
Autosuggestion
We have different voices in our heads telling us different things. For many people, these voices are telling us negative, critical things: "I'm not good enough;" "I'm an inadequate leader;" "I spend too much time on the Internet;" "I'm not good enough for my job;" "I'm a bad father;" "I hate doing this." Richard Daft, the author of the book, suggests that one can replace those pre-suppositions about themselves by using something called autosuggestion. Basically, you intentionally replace those thoughts with what you want to be, and eventually what you say will be your first thought, instead of the negative thoughts. This technique was originally suggested by Emile Coué in his book Self Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion. Coué suggested that you repeat the phrase "Each day in every way, I am getting better and better" twenty times before you go to sleep and when you get up. Richard Daft makes other suggestions: "I am loving people more;" "I am slowing down my judgments;" "I am more engaged in school;" "I am becoming more intentional;" or, for me, "I am becoming a better father."
The basic thing that this accomplishes is focuses your intentions. When you are thinking about "getting better and better" every night before you go to bed, and when you get up in the morning, you are more likely to be thinking about this during the day, and actually doing things that make you better and better.
Review your day
This was a good suggestion that I think I will begin to implement: take a few minutes at the end of each day to review the day. What were the highlights of your day? What made you feel good? What did you accomplish? What didn't go well? What discouraged you? What could you make better?
When you take time to review the day, and even write things down, you can identify the things that you do that are elephant-like (that you need to do better), and the things that are executive-like (that you need to encourage and hone). You can even do this with a spouse or accountability partner by asking them to ask you five or ten simple questions at the end of the day, to force you to evaluate how you're doing.
Overall, this book has been a great source of ideas on how to improve the way that I lead myself. There were ideas (especially out of his eastern spirituality background) that I disagreed with, but for the most part, it was an excellent read. The Executive and the Elephant: A Leader's Guide for Building Inner Excellence Overview

Selling to the C-Suite: What Every Executive Wants You to Know About Successfully Selling to the Top ReviewIn tough times, spending limits are always curtailed with the effect that more decisions are made or need approval by someone in the C-Suite. The age old recommendation of "calling high" is therefore of high actuality. Yet many sales people struggle to get access to the senior executives and even more so to hold meaningful conversations at this level. In today's economic environment this capability gap can become career threatening.
« Selling to the C-Suite » by Nicholas A.C. Read and Stephen J. Bistritz offers very practical advise how to close this gap. It is not one of those thousands of books flooding the business book market written in the style of "This is what I did, I was successful, there is no reason it should not work for you." Instead, "Selling to the C-Suite" is packed with research based concepts that have successfully been applied by thousands of practitioners. Instead of looking what people did who were successful to sell to the C-suite, the research focused on how senior executives want to buy.
With the concept of the relevant executive, the authors help salespeople to understand exactly what "calling high" means for a particular client. This relevant executive cannot be identified by just looking at an organization chart. The relevant executive is not only defined by his/her high rank but also by his/her high influence. The book gives good clues how to determine this influence.
The authors are also helping us to understand , based on their research, when senior executive are involved in a buying decision. It is not when they actually sign the contract. They are involved early when a problem surfaces where "work-arounds" do no longer contain the consequences caused by the problem and a project needs to be defined for finding a new way of how to address this problem. Usually when the vision is clear how the problem can be solved by buying something, the selection of the vendor offering suitable solutions is delegated. The executive's interest in the project increases again once the solution is in place. At this point in time they want to know what value the solution actually delivers to their business.
Calling to executives early, requires a higher proficiency of selling. Indicators are given helping an individual to check his/her actual level of sales proficiency and throughout the book practical advice can be found what it takes to close the gap.
Preparation is key in selling to the C-Suite. There is a chapter in the book helping to gain an understanding what executives want. In an appendix of the book, there is a very practical guide to customer research how to find clues of what a particular executive wants specifically.
How to gain access and how to establish credibility with executives are other important topics. It also has been said many times, that sellers today are no longer "messengers of value" they have to be "providers of value". How this can be achieved is also very clearly explained? The explanation that value is to be articulated differently depending on the status of the customer project is particularly insightful. It is recommended to use a Value Hypothesis to articulate the problem, a Value Proposition to help with the buying decision and a Value Message, to confirm the value that has been delivered through the solution. However the structure recommended for the Value Proposition seems to be a bit to rigid. I doubt that the template where just some blanks are to be filled in is still effective today.
Knowing when executives are involved in a project is also a key concept how to cultivate loyalty.
To help the reader to transition from knowing to doing, there is an appendix with worksheets providing a tool box how to apply the concepts in daily practice.
This description of the content does not represent the flow of the chapters in the book. Not mentioned yet is Chapter 2 of the book.
This is one of the most concise discussions on B2B Marketing, how it differs from B2C Marketing and how the Internet has changed the role of selling I have ever seen. This chapter alone is an alternative reason for buying the book. Understanding its contents is not only relevant for people wanting to sell to the C-Suite. It is essential for anyone who seeks to have a lasting career in direct sales.
For people wanting to sell to the C-Suite this book is a must read anyhow.

Global Negotiation: The New Rules ReviewI'm a professor who teaches negotiation, primarily to executive MBA's. I used this book as a text in a course I recently taught in Hong Kong with great success. I also intend to use it in negotiation courses in the US.
Knowing how to negotiate globally is an essential tool for the sucessful business man or women. This book, written in four sections, begins with an indepth look at why culture matters. The case is made not only through engaging examples but also with rich and recent supporting data. The second section on intelligence gathering and designing knowledge flows is excellent and is important information for any negotiator, global or domestic.
Although I use the text in a classroom setting; any business person who operates in the global economy should find the book extremely helpul in preparing for and succeeding in global negotiations.Global Negotiation: The New Rules Overview
