The Leadership Pill: The Missing Ingredient in Motivating People Today ReviewGo to page 110. Read the four themes: integrity, partnership, affirmation, and perfecting the blend. Perhaps read each of the three bullet points for each of the four themes. Do this while browsing at a bookstore or, better yet, at the local library. Good. You now have spent thirty seconds and saved yourself money and the other fourteen-and-a-half minutes it takes to read the entire book.
Should we be grateful that leadership can be expressed so concisely and learned -- no, mastered -- so quickly? Or should we wonder who would pay a full-book price for 112 very short pages? Or should we wonder when the authors say, "The focus group data is (sic) compelling?" (p.3). Five-star reviews come from people in the first category.
The parable is full of sweet, easily transformed people, coming alive after years of mistreatment by management, brought back to life by a simple yet incredibly powerful act or word from "The Effective Leader". There is little to be generalized from these simple, simplistic cliches.
This is a variation on the incredibly successful "One-minute manager," which had similar characteristics to an article entitled, "McGregor" a few years earlier in "Organizational Dynamics," espousing one-minute praise, punishment and goals. In this case, Blanchard and Muchnick describe a people-oriented, empowering leadership model and contrast it with the pill-induced, autocratic, domineering, results-oriented style they attribute to "Patton, Napoleon and Attila the Hun." Suffice it to say, the pill doesn't work. It's poisonous. Like heroin, it gives the leader a rush of power and grandeur, but only until the followers get pretty sick and tired of ego tripping.The Leadership Pill: The Missing Ingredient in Motivating People Today Overview

No Mind Left Behind: Understanding and Fostering Executive Control--The Eight Essential Brain Skills Every Child Needs to Thrive ReviewI was a big fan of Cox's other book, Boys of Few Words. Despite the technical subtitle, I picked this up and was so happy I did. Cox's strategies for helping kids is right on target, and should be required reading for every teacher and classroom volunteer (like me) on the planet.
Drawing on recent brain research, Cox makes a powerful argument that much of what we label "ADHD" (and other behavior or learning problems) stems from under-developed "executive control" skills. These are skills that develop at different rates in different children, sometimes up to the early twenties. The bottom line is that we may be unnecessarily medicating and reprimanding children who just need some extra time and attention to catch up. According to Cox, more holistic interventions can "rewire" a growing brain and help all kids, no matter where they start, be more successful.
Cox is a child advocate who shows that what might look like "character faults" (bad attitudes, disorganization, laziness, etc.) are often (although not always) simply brain processing problems. He clarifies "which is which" with sound reasoning. His suggestions are research-based and practical, and his cheerful and witty prose (including some hilarious vignettes that every parent will identify with) make this a fast and fun read. Sidetracked Home Executives: from Pigpen to Paradise ReviewPam and Peggy certainly know what it feels like to be living in total chaos, and they use that understanding to good effect in this book, showing step by step how they got organized. They don't take any knowledge or organizational ability for granted, and they have great senses of humor. Their card-file system will probably work for most people who are SHE's (Sidetracked Home Executives) because of their creativity, or just general distractedness.
If, however, you are a SHE because you're a frozen perfectionist, someone who never cleans because you don't have time to do it RIGHT, this is not the book for you. The card-file is wonderful - except that I'm entirely capable of spending the next 6 months making sure I've got the file system perfect without ever actually doing any of the stuff on it. There's also nothing to prevent you from overloading yourself with nit-picking chores and burning out. If these sound like things you would be prone to, then I would recommend "Sink Reflections" by Marla Cilley instead. She uses much of the same material as Pam and Peggy (she credits them as her inspiration), but her program is specifically designed for those of us who try so hard for perfection we get nowhere.
If perfectionism isn't your problem, then by all means go with Pam and Peggy. They're great fun to read, and however bad your house is, they will understand.Sidetracked Home Executives: from Pigpen to Paradise Overview

This book FINALLY shed light on the challenges my son faces at home and school. It not only gave me concrete tools and ideas to help him strengthen his executive skills, but also an understanding of what was going on, which led to more patience on my part. Nagging him to get organized and constantly reminding him to stay on task was not helping. His executive skill weaknesses were beginning to lead to low self-esteem and a "better not to try than to fail" attitude. This book has helped me to begin turning that around. It was recommended to me by a psychologist. Far too much has been marketed in the media with the prefix 'Attention-Deficit' for me to give much serious consideration to a very genuine condition afflicting 4% of population. Dr. Solanto's book, though written to and for therapists, was very useful to me as a sufferer. I needed to read something authoritative and adult oriented in order to accept my doctor's diagnosis and overcome my resistance to practical therapy. I found the first third of the book, which describes various case studies to ring familiar enough for me to accept help for something that isn't my fault. Therapy and some medication have been a great help.
