Managing Virtual Teams (Artech House Professional Development Library) ReviewI have really looked a long time to find a book that has a practical management perspective. Most of the books I've read on virtual teams either focus on bits and bytes (which I don't need since I'm an IT Director) or high level organizational theory. This book had some really practical suggestions that I could implement to improve communication and control for my team.Managing Virtual Teams (Artech House Professional Development Library) Overview

The Discipline of Teams: A Mindbook-Workbook for Delivering Small Group Performance ReviewThe Discipline of Teams updates and extends the best-seller, The Wisdom of Teams. "The most important characteristic of teams is discipline; not bonding, togetherness, or empowerment." You are encouraged to be sure that you use teams only when they make sense as a performance unit, rather than having a single-leader approach. Using sophisticated Marine units as models, you begin to appreciate that some tasks are better suited to individuals and some tasks need to combine team and individual elements. In fact, complex tasks may require many teams focusing on subtasks. The book also looks at virtual teams and the impact of electronic communications on teams (concluding that nothing really changes -- you just have more ways to communicate and face-to-face is still important).
A team makes sense when you need to accomplish something more than what individual performances will give you. A good example comes in new product development. Each specialist can do a good job, and the project can easily be a bust. By thinking together, potential failure can become success by tweaking each perspective in new ways. The authors also point out that many times goals are set that sound like individual performance, but better goals would set directions requiring a team.
An effective team needs to have:
(1) an understandable charter
(2) communicate and coordinate effectively
(3) have clear roles and responsibilities for individuals
(4) use time-efficient processes and
(5) have a sense of accountability.
"Whenever a small group can deliver performance through the combined sum of individual contributions, then the single-leader discipline is the most effective choice."
The book provides many ways to make both teams and single-leader groups work better. In fact, it focuses on those areas that are most likely to cause problems, like poorly defined goals, keeping the size of the group as small as possible, not having the skills needed, time pressures, and using the wrong leadership discipline). I also liked the fact that the book looked at the question of when you should fold a team.
The authors clearly understand a great deal about making teams more effective, and anyone can learn from this book. I think those who liked The Wisdom of Teams will find it to be a useful refresher with some valuable new material.
The book contains many exercises and workbook questions that I happily endorse. They make the book much more practical and useful. If you just did the exercises and the workbook questions, this would be a five star book. The explanations are just icing on the cake.
After you have finished this book, I also suggest you think about whether you have set the right priorities in your organization. Realizing that you can only do a few things at once, what should they be? Be sure to give yourself a chance to pick tasks that will benefit from teams.
Find ways to make human cooperation more beneficial . . . for that's our strength!

The Performance Factor: Unlocking the Secrets of Teamwork ReviewThis book on teams is the best I have ever seen on the subject. The author retells the story of United Flight 232 throughout the book to make his points. It brings the principles to life in a very real life way. The "team wheel" and the chapters on the qualities of a high performance team are worth the price of the book alone.
This book would be of real value to anyone leading a team. It would be an especially good resource for consultants as well. Lots of graphs and diagnostic tools make the book feel like a library of resources.
On a personal note, there is a lot you can apply to any set of relationships where you are on a team. I learned a lot about being a husband and dad just reading it!The Performance Factor: Unlocking the Secrets of Teamwork Overview

How to Hire A-Players: Finding the Top People for Your Team- Even If You Don't Have a Recruiting Department ReviewI haven't purchased the book and it may well be worth five stars from everyone. This review is intended as a sanity check for other people who buy lots of books on Amazon.com and who count on natural reviews to help guide their purchases.
I took a look at this book based in part on the remarkable rating. However, all current ratings (as of July 21, 2010) are five stars, mostly by Real Name(tm) reviewers who've never reviewed another book, mostly from around the day the book was first released (fast readers or advance copies?).
While the current thirteen rave reviews may indeed be legitimate, representative, and spontaneous, my spidey sense tingled as I went through them. I certainly don't doubt they're real people given that at least a couple of them (e.g. Jennifer Pausch and Rich Ledbetter) both appear to be existing customers of the author who've also provided nice testimonials for his website.
I theorize this is a deliberate (and a little too obvious) marketing campaign rather than spontaneous reviews like we rely on for most other books (or maybe other authors' publicists are just more subtle). If the former, to me that feels misleading and in bad faith towards those who look for a pattern in natural reviews to help make a buying decision.
Maybe Amazon also needs a "Disclosure: I know the author on a first name basis(tm)" demarcation? Or perhaps this is indeed a really awesome book with an unfortunate and irrelevant confluence of indicators in the reviews. I'm keen to see additional spontaneous and bona fide reviews from people who don't know the author and have read this book.

Code of the Executive ReviewIn ancient times, Samurai warriors lived by a rigid code known as Bushido. At the heart of this "code of life" lie forty-seven ancient principles. In his stellar book "The Code of the Executive", Don Schminke has rebirthed these ancient principles and codes, and the practice of Bushido.
"The Code of the Executive" contains ninety-eight pages of ancient text used by the Samurai warriors on a daily basis as they lived and fought. This text has been updated for use by executive managers in the 21st Century. In its entirety, this small book contains the entire code for successful leadership. Mr. Schminke offers these essential tools of life and leadership to managers throughout the world in the conferences that he conducts, now the philosophy is available to everyone in book form.
There is a myriad of books available to the business manager searching for enlightenment, interested in improving his skills, or satisfying a thirst for knowledge. Over the years I have read many of them. Unfortunately, virtually no page did I turn contain the philosophy essential to life. Not one page spoke of the foundation that we must establish before we can be successful in life. In fact, these books that I read spoke of business success as a tangibility to be acquired. Good managers do not become good managers with out a foundation. Executives can not effectively steer their organizations without Honor and Respect, without Integrity or Bravery. The principles necessary for success are not found, they are learned, they must be understood and practiced. The journey toward true leadership is profound and "The Code of the Executive" is the 21st Century Guide.
As a developing manager my journey continues. My own change, development, and growth can be traced. Mr. Schminke's book provided me with a paradigm shift of focus. My understanding of Role and Responsibility drastically changed as the Bushido introduced to me the concept of Death, and how all of the mighty principles are tightly woven around its strength. This book teaches that success is not found, the path to success cannot be memorized, and success cannot be taught. Business success coincides with life success. "The Code of the Executive" offers forty-seven principles of self fulfillment that must be learned, understood, and practiced.
Even though this book speaks in terms of the executive, it is not for a limited audience. The sooner that this book is read and the journey toward fulfillment begins the sooner that change and understanding will be realized. This journey is long and difficult. Once it begins, these principles will build the person who becomes the successful leader in life and business. I highly recommend "The Code of the Executive" as essential text for leadership training and development in all aspects of life. Students in high school or collage may never take a class as powerful as this self-study.Code of the Executive Overview

The Ideal Executive (The Leadership Trilogy, Volume 1) ReviewLeadership, in the Adizes worldview, is a team sport. Even the brashest and most pushy leaders need support from key followers. It may not look like a team from the outside, but the complexities of organizational life are such that one person acting alone cannot optimally deal with all of the challenges that managers face. The reality is, some problems will come along that you are great at solving, some problems will come along that you are ok at solving, and some will come along that you'd be much better off letting somebody else (who is great at it) deal with.
This book gets deep down into the details of exactly how this works on management teams, and how to build teams with people who have different kinds of leadership/management genius. It teaches you how the careful fact-checker can get along with the intuitive opportunity hound, synergizing their talents without driving each other totally insane! Adizes presents a typology that help everyone on the team understand and respect each other, communicate with each other and work together, making good decisions while resisting a culture of conformity. Instead, a vibrant leadership culture of mutual respect of differences becomes the norm for people who learn and apply these ideas on the job.
This book is an update to Dr. Adizes' earlier book entitled How To Solve The Mismanagement Crisis: Diagnosis and Treatment of Management Problems - also highly recommended. Adizes ideas about leadership teams is part of the larger conceptual framework of the Adizes management methodology. Core ideas are further developed in Mastering Change, and in much more detail in Managing Corporate Lifecycles. (Full disclosure: I've been so stimulated by core Adizes ideas that I've written my own book about just one of his ideas - The Structure of Concern: A Challenge for Thinkers, on sale here but also available for free online in soft copy from Scribd and other online repositories.)
I use this book as a textbook on leadership styles for self-analysis and team-building in corporate leadership development programs which I run. Students include managers and non-managers alike. Many students say the book has helped them not only at work, but in their marriages and as parents as well! It really presents a kind of deep psychology for collaboration with respect for (and leverage of) differences. It's also really good for people who are trying to plan out their career paths. It helps validate what you do as important, helps you realize you don't have to be good at everything, and it helps you target the kinds of jobs you might be most happy doing in the future. So even below the executive level, this book has something to offer every professional and manager in today's workplace. The Ideal Executive (The Leadership Trilogy, Volume 1) Overview
