How They Achieved: Stories of Personal Achievement and Business Success ReviewThis book is very well organized, systematic, and most of all very very inspirational. It is a compilation of stories from 20 highly successful people. It is about how they made it, their inspirations, their values and beliefs and how all these factors combine to make them who they are today. These people are divided into 3 categories: CEO's, Entrepreneurs, and Visionaries. This distinction is very useful because there are different traits that are associated with each category. To be successful is to hold firm to your own beliefs, but we all know this is difficult because you will be taking enormous amount of risks and inevitably be facing a lot of insecurities. This book will remind you that you are not alone and many of these highly successful people have gone through the same thing. This book is a must read for anyone who wants to find support in achieving their goals and dreams. How They Achieved: Stories of Personal Achievement and Business Success Overview

Great Leaders See the Future First: Taking Your Organization to the Top - In Five Revolutionary Steps ReviewThis is the most thought-provoking book on leadership I have read in some time, and it makes a nice connection to the need to lead differently in the face of powerful, irresistible forces that are becoming stronger. The book offers many diagnostics to give you a sense of where and how you might become more effective. Having diagnosed where you need to improve, you will probably have to rely on other books to get you the details you need to make large improvements.
Ms. Corbin's focus is on "great leaders -- those special individuals who have ethical character, care about their followers, and have the courage to lead them into a positive future." She also says that the purpose of the book is "becoming a great leader under a new set of global rules."
Ms. Corbin heads a think tank called the Center for the 21st Century, and she draws on a lot of forecasts to describe important issues for the new century in terms of trends: more freedom, faster transportation, progressive world peace, advancing technology, increasing capitalism, growing world business trade, and more understanding of diversity. These trends will coalesce into four Dyna (her word) forces on the organization of the future: globalization; marketization (market forces determining resource allocations rather than governments); informatization (knowledge from data); and democratization.
The author reports having been very accurate with her forecasts over the last 15 years, so we should probably take her seriously. I have no ability to forecast the future in a similar way, and believe it cannot be forecast so accurately; but I leave it up to you to decide about her forecasts.
Basically, she is calling for a convergence of forces in a way that will make organizations uncomfortable places for many to work. She sees leadership as being the answer. "Leaders determine whether an organization succeeds or fails." This will require a new model of leader who is more of a strategist, innovator, seer, speeder-upper, and user of new technologies in a more free form environment with mostly project workers involved.
I thought that the book was more of a visionary statement of the ideal, rather than a guide that leaders will specifically follow. For example, it seems to me that a leader could succeed either by creating an environment where these things occur or by actually being the doer who makes them happen. I suspect that the former role will be more prevalent and easier to do. There was not a lot of guidance on the details of what to do. The direction was at about the 40,000 foot level above sea level. That is a good place to see the big picture, but it is hard to connect the dots if you are a leader.
My own work on irresitible forces suggests that the world she portrays is a little too simplified to be helpful for any given organization, yet these are certainly forces that everyone should consider and use to their advantage.
On leadership, my own research shows that the most successful current leaders focus on 2 or 3 roles that are more important to their organization's success than any others, and do those superbly. Perhaps in time, people will be able to do more, but I would be surprised to see widespread expansion of capabilities of leaders occurring very rapidly. I agree with the author that there is more hope in creating free-flowing organizational structures and encouraging everyone in the organization to take on more of their own leadership.
Use your irresistible forces to create chaos for your competitors' organizations by shifting the rules!

Think Before You Speak: A Complete Guide to Strategic Negotiation ReviewThis book provides a framework for negotiation. It seems to be in line with the Harvard "Getting to Yes" model. The implementation requires some effot, but seems to reflect the latest thinking on the subject. I highly recommend this book for anybody who wishes to negotiate from a framework rather than winging it. Some of the material is obscure and somewhat mechanical in the interaction process it describes. But with effort, it can be incorporated into your business knowledge.Think Before You Speak: A Complete Guide to Strategic Negotiation Overview

Sister Ceo: The Black Woman's Guide to Starting Your Own Business ReviewSister CEO is very motivating, realistic, and I highly recommend it.
Broussard is obviously a go-getter and would be an asset in anyone's circle.
Her book would be very useful to ANY women who aspires entreprenuerialship.
Only one view in her book I did not agree with, and that was on the subject of financing your business. My interpretation was to borrow, beg, or take money out of your house, to do whatever was legally necessary to finance your business -just get started-. Understood if you're single, but if you are married this finanical decision should be agreed upon between BOTH partners.
Other than that, a Job Well Done, Broussard!Sister Ceo: The Black Woman's Guide to Starting Your Own Business Overview

Radical Innovation: How Mature Companies Can Outsmart Upstarts ReviewI think this book will have the greatest value if read in combination with Yoffie and Kwak's Judo Strategy. Why? Because the authors of that book correctly stress the importance of maximizing organizational speed, agility, balance, and leverage in any competitive marketplace. What they do not address (except perhaps indirectly or by implication) is the importance of radical innovation which, more often than not, proves to be a decisive competitive advantage. Indeed, the seven authors of the book I am about to review identify "Seven Challenges in Managing Radical Innovation" (see Table 1-1 on page 8) and meeting these challenges effectively indeed requires maximizing organizational speed, agility, balance, and leverage. Obviously, no single volume asks all "the right questions," much less provides "all the right answers." Hence the importance of carefully correlating the ideas from several different sources. I also strongly Michael Hammer's The Agenda which offers a "model" by which decision-makers in any organization (regardless of its size or nature) can determine appropriate priorities and then set appropriate objectives before formulating strategies and tactics by which to achieve those objectives.
The subtitle of this book ("How Mature Companies Can Outsmart Upstarts") reminds me of Jack Welch's comments when explaining why he admires "small and sleek" companies:
"For one, they communicate better. Without the din and prattle of bureaucracy, people listen as well as talk; and since there are fewer of them they generally know and understand each other. Second, small companies move faster. They know the penalties for hesitation in the marketplace. Third, in small companies, with fewer layers and less camouflage, the leaders show up very clearly on the screen. Their performance and its impact are clear to everyone. And, finally, smaller companies waste less. They spend less time in endless reviews and approvals and politics and paper drills. They have fewer people; therefore they can only do the important things. Their people are free to direct their energy and attention toward the marketplace rather than fighting bureaucracy."
For those who seek radical innovation in so-called "mature" companies, the challenges which the authors of this book identify are obviously much greater than they are for those in the "small and sleek" companies which Welch admires. A majority of upstarts pursue a "judo strategy" (in one form or another) because they lack the resources of their much larger competitors. (David had no chance if he wrestled Goliath.) For that reason, they cannot afford incremental innovation. They must take bold, decisive action when and where it will have the greatest impact.
When explaining what they call an "imperative," the authors of this book make a critically important distinction: "...incremental innovation usually emphasizes cost or feature improvements in existing products or services and is dependent on exploitation competencies. In contrast, radical innovation concerns the development of new businesses or product lines -- based on new ideas or technologies or substantial cost reductions -- that transform the economics of a business, and therefore require exploration competencies." This is indeed a key distinction.
Much of the material in this book was generated by the authors' research over a period of five years (1995-2000) which followed the development and commercialization activities of 12 radical innovation projects in 10 large, established ("mature") firms. For the authors, a radical innovation project must have the potential to produce one or more of these results: an entirely new set of performance features, improvements in known performance features of five times or greater, and/or a significant (i.e. 30% or more) reduction in cost. What the authors learned from the research serves as the foundation of their conclusions; also of what they recommend to those who seek radical innovation in their own organization. All of the ideas presented are anchored in an abundance of real-world experience. Although this brilliant book's greatest value may be derived by decision-makers in "mature" companies, I think substantial value can also be derived by decision-makers in the "upstarts" with which such companies as DuPont, General Electric, General Motors, IBM, and Texas Instruments will continue to compete. One final point: All of the "mature" companies discussed in this book were once "upstarts" themselves. How revealing that all of them are now so hard at work on regaining or preserving certain competitive advantages which once served them so well.Radical Innovation: How Mature Companies Can Outsmart Upstarts Overview

The Naked Truth: A Working Woman's Manifesto on Business and What Really Matters ReviewMargaret Heffernan has never been afraid to talk about the ugliness that can happen for women in Corporate America. Her new book is no different. It brings up almost every important issue for women trying to climb the traditional corporate ladder. In some cases she offers solutions, either from her own experience and research, or through the shared stories of women she interviewed for the book.
Two things in particular in the book stuck with me. In one section she discusses women and their "relationship" with work. I really liked the use of that word, "relationship." Because I do have a relationship with my work, just like I have a relationship with the people in my life or with money. (I had never really thought about it in that way before.) The second item that struck me was after I read one woman's description of something very sexist that happened in the workplace, I expected the next line to say, "that was ten years ago." Instead, the line was "that was in 2004." I think we need reminding that not everything has changed, and in fact, anything going on now is even worse than ten years ago, because it's 2005, and we all (including the boys) know better. The Naked Truth: A Working Woman's Manifesto on Business and What Really Matters Overview

Built for Change: Essential Traits of Transformative Companies ReviewRarely do business books capture the imagination and weave thoughtful narrative into applicable lessons but T.D. Klein manages this with ease and grace. His Built for Change is a superior read which brings to light unique and tested management tenets that have led companies to success in a variety of sectors and industries. He highlights in depth such companies as Blackboard, Zappos and Cirrus Aviation to illustrate clearly how different companies employ "unorthodox" strategies. Hot Groups : Seeding Them, Feeding Them, and Using Them to Ignite Your Organization ReviewIn the Preface, the reader is told: "The time is ripe for large, hierarchical, well-ordered organizations to make room for small, egalitarian, disordered hot groups. That is the first thesis of this book....The book's second and ultimately more important thesis is that hot groups are not good just for organizations. They are also good for people. They offer individuals opportunities to find meaning and ennoblement through their work. In our fast and impermanent new organizational world, those who work in organizations -- and that includes most of us -- both expect and deserve such opportunities." Here is how the book is organized:
Part I Hot Groups: What They Are and Why They're Hot
Part IIWho Needs Hot Groups? And Who Seeds New Ones?
Part III How Do Hot Groups Operate?
Part IVAn Optimistic View of What's Ahead
At this point early in my review, I want to stress that a "hot group" should be the logical, indeed inevitable result of a way at looking at organizational renewal. Think of the "hot group" concept as precisely that: a concept which affirms the value of a process by which individual members of any organization (regardless of its size or nature) can effectively collaborate. These members are "task-obsessed and full of passion." They share a style which is "intense, sharply focused, and full bore." Moreover, members of a "hot group" feel engaged in "an important, even vital and personally ennobling mission"; their task is "dominates all other considerations"; and although a "hot group" tends to remain intact only for a relatively short period of time, it is "remembered nostalgically and in considerable detail by its members."
Such groups require effective leadership. In Chapter 6, Lipman-Blumen and Leavitt address this issue, suggesting a number of specific "options" when "hot group" is assembled and then charged with its mission. For example: "To develop a hot, task-obsessed group, think about people before you begin laying out a flow chart. Bring on the people. Getting the task done is not your solo job. It's the whole group's job." The leader is urged to "recruit wild ducks", then help the group to bring the right people in, to get the wrong people out, and with unexpected departures. According to the authors, there are two kinds of c"wars" and "races." In wars, the goal is to destroy the enemy; in races, the goal is not to destroy but to out-perform others. Also, "at least as much", to have members outperform themselves, to exceed their personal best.
In my opinion, this brilliant book makes two immensely important contributions to our understanding of what it takes to achieve superior organizational performance. First, it explains what the members of a "hot group" can themselves accomplish if given the leadership, freedom, and resources needed. Second, it explains what the positive impact of such a group can have on all others within the same organization. Paradoxically, a "hot group" is most effective within an organization that has stability, solid and enlightened management, and sufficient resources to support the group's efforts. That is certainly true of those associated with Xerox PARC, the Manhattan Project, Lockheed's "Skunk Works", and the Disney studios which produced the first full-length animated films.
If an organization is unwilling and/or unable to tolerate a "small, egalitarian, disordered" but NOT disorganized "hot group", it probably has problems which even the hottest of "hot groups" cannot solve.Hot Groups : Seeding Them, Feeding Them, and Using Them to Ignite Your Organization Overview

Ten Steps Ahead: What Separates Successful Business Visionaries from the Rest of Us Review
The material in Ten Steps Ahead is based on what Erik Calonius learned during his research (including interviews of various business visionaries) from which he gained a much better understanding of "what separates successful business visionaries from the rest of us."
The word "successful" is critically important, reminding us of Thomas Edison's observation, "Vision without execution is hallucination." No one can deny what Walt Disney, Edwin Land, Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, and Jeff Hawkins accomplished, not only within the business world but also in terms of the global impact they and their respective companies have had. Calonius also focuses on other visionaries such as Orville and Wilbur Wright, Henry Ford, Albert Einstein, and more recently, Richard Feynman whose achievements also indicate that the brain is a visionary device whose primary function is to create pictures.
Throughout human history, innovator thinkers can usually be divided into two classes: dreamers and visionaries. Those in either group tend to be "ten steps ahead of others" in terms of what their brains "see" but only the visionaries are driven (by forces that Calonius explains brilliantly) to make what they "see" become a reality.
Readers will appreciate Calonius' strategic insertion of insightful comments throughout his narrative. For example:
Former Apple CEO John Sculley: "Both of them [i.e. Edwin Land and Steve Jobs] had this ability to - well, not invent products but discover products. Both of them said these products have already existed, it's just that no one had ever seen them before. We were the ones who discovered them." (Page 52)
Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer on a term they defined: "Emotional intelligence involves the ability to perceive accurately, appraise, and express emotion; the ability to access and/or generate feelings when they facilitate thought; the ability to understand emotion and emotional knowledge; and the ability to regulate emotions to promote emotional and intellectual growth." (Page 64)
"The most exciting phrase to hear in science, one that heralds the most discoveries, is not Eureka! (I found it!) but, `That's funny.'" Isaac Asimov (Page 73)
Andy Hertzfeld on Steve Jobs's "reality distortion field": "It's a confounding mélange of a charismatic rhetorical style, and indomitable will, and an eagerness to bend any fact to fit the purpose at hand. If one line of argument failed to persuade, he would deftly switch to another. Sometimes he would throw you off balance by suddenly adopting your position as his own, without acknowledging that he ever thought differently...We would often discuss potential techniques for grounding it, but after a while most of us gave up, accepting it as a force of nature."
Time and again, Calonius cites an example of a visionary business leader who is willing to suffer and struggle, to put everything at risk, when pursuing a dream that Jim Collins and Jerry Porras would probably characterize as a commercial-strength BHAG (i.e. Big Hairy Audacious Goal). There are countless situations in which visionaries see what no one else sees but are oblivious to the serious dangers that are obvious to everyone else.
Few of those who read this book are or ever will be a successful business visionary ("ten steps ahead") but all who read it can learn valuable lessons from the material that Calonius provides and be 3-5 steps ahead of where they were before. There are lessons about how to overcome what I characterize as "the invisibility of the obvious" in order to recognize - having developed imaging skills - the opportunities and possibilities that would otherwise be missed. Also, how to overcome resistance, rejection, and ridicule with courage and conviction. Like Tennyson's Ulysses, they are determined "to strive, to seek, to find...and not to yield." And as Calonius points out, one factor in success is under our control: "the number of at-bats, the number of chances taken, the number of opportunities seized."
I congratulate Erik Calonius on a brilliant achievement. To those who read it, I presume to suggest that there are still lots of fat juicy dragons out there roaming around. Go get `em!Ten Steps Ahead: What Separates Successful Business Visionaries from the Rest of Us Overview

Leading at the Speed of Growth: Journey from Entrepreneur to CEO (Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership) ReviewCommentary, August, 2001. This is an important book for several audiences. First, it should help entrepreneurs understand the skills and experience that are required to move from start up, or as the authors put it, from "initial growth," through "rapid growth," and finally into "continuous growth" phases. Thoughtful entrepreneurs will ask of themselves: "Do I have those shills - if not, what must I do to gain them? And, do I have what it takes to do so?" If they are truly honest with themselves, a good number will realize that it will take different individuals with different skills and experience to lead their creation through these phases, and act accordingly.
The second group range from board directors, especially if venture capitalists are among them, and trusted personal advisors, especially if the entrepreneur does not have a true board comprised of some seasoned executives or consultants with requisite experience. These are the individuals who are in the best position to make these kind of judgments.
Many years ago, I was in the office of the head of one of the more successful venture capital firms in Boston...let's call him Mr. D. The purpose of our meeting was to discuss a possible collaboration with one of his ventures. As the discussion unfolded, it was clear that his attention was elsewhere, so I asked him if this was the case. He seemed relieved, and emotionally stated that he had just concluded a phone conversation with the outside directors of a promising venture in which he was the lead investor. The venture, with annual revenues over $20 million, was pioneering a new, important technological field. The outside directors were aware of the leadership problems, and were not surprised that Mr. D. was recommending the removal of the founder and his replacement an individual Mr. D. believed had the skills, experience, and desire to lead the company well into the rapid growth phase profitably. This was in spite of Mr. D's several frank one-on-one discussions with the firm's founder that revolved around his bringing in a new CEO, thereby permitting the founder to concentrate on the R&D efforts that were so essential for success. The founder refused to relinquish total control of his baby.
The founder's loss represented a serious setback for the investors, but one if not taken put the venture at extreme risk. It took several years before the company got back on its rapid growth phase while retaining its leadership position in its markets.
Would the entrepreneur have acted differently if he had read Catlin & Matthews' book with its real life examples? I can't tell, but he might have accepted his new role...after all, it would have been in his own self-interest - he owned about 30% of the stock.
Another example. I was on the board of a company facing the same kind of problem. The company had grown from $800,000 in revenues to somewhat over $5 million in 15 months. The CEO confided in me that the joy of building his creation was being displaced by too many operating details. First he brought in a solid COO, but soon thereafter asked us the board to find his replacement. He gave us enough time to do this as we worked out ways we could collaborate with him in the near future.
Similar stories repeated time and time again. Catlin & Matthews offer constructive advise to help entrepreneurs make it through their growth phases - or to counsel them to face reality. Bravo, Katherine and Jana; may your book gain widespread use.
Catlin & Matthews at least spell out for entrepreneurs the nature of the game they are in. To ignore their advice seems, to me, to be foolhardy.Leading at the Speed of Growth: Journey from Entrepreneur to CEO (Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership) Overview

How Did I Get Here: The Ascent of an Unlikely CEO Review
About the Book:
This is not only a business book, but a story, actually a drama of sorts, that provides a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the life of a most unique man. One who has been able to somehow bridge the gap between a very structured corporate world and a very anarchistic and sometimes rebellious youth market with great accuracy and success.
In many ways, you've seen this story before - you know, the typical rare planetary alignment that brings about a kid with ridiculously supportive parents, the right amount of obsessiveness... the hyper overachieving computer nerd with an abundance of natural athletic talent and endless energy. Add to that a little self-made luck, and you have a true success story in the making. I use "in the making," as it is obvious that Mr. Tony Hawk is far from finished with the story.
There is a certain freshness to this book, I think primarily due to it actually being written by Tony and his family, no professional "hired hand" writers involved. You can immediately feel and sense the nights that Tony, his sister Pat, and brother Steve must have spent together either in each others presence or in emails and drafts, organizing, reorganizing, writing, re-writing, checking grammar, reviewing punctuation and everything else that goes into creating a book of top form.
This book might best be described as a "business autobiography," one filled with fun and very interesting experiences that drive along a good narrative, while providing a reasonable amount of insight into the strategies of marketing a bigger-than-life image and the vast array of product attached to it. The product in this case, in addition to skateboards and apparel, runs the gamut from philanthropic endeavors to television cartoons and radio shows, 30 million copy selling video games, Internet startups, and world tours with enough equipment and semi trailers to rival that of the largest of rock concerts. Through it all, we see how Tony successfully navigates the fine line between celebrity, businessman, and "core" skater, without "selling out" to any one side. The Ride:
"How Did I Get Here," although topical in format rather than chronological, primarily covers Tony's "business" life from 1982 (at the age of 14) straight through to the summer of 2010, the time of publication. You live through almost 30 years of rises and falls, often matching that of the rise and fall of the actions-sports industry as a whole.
If you are familiar with skateboarding history, Tony's professional career is rooted directly back to the original "Lords of Dogtown." Stacy Peralta, one of the original Z-Boys, formed skateboarding powerhouse Powell Peralta and with it, the Bones Brigade skate team. One of the first members he recruited was 13 year old Tony Hawk. We briefly follow this time through to see royalty checks with the Bones Brigade grow from .85 cents to over $5,000/mo. while still a teenager.
With the beginning of the skate recession of the early 90's and Tony soon to be pushing the old age of 25 (there were no pro skaters over that age at the time), things were getting to look rather bleak.
Thinking that his time as a pro skater was limited, he tightened his belt and sold his Lexus, bought a Honda Civic, refinanced his house to acquire $40,000 in cash, got a partner from his Bones Brigade days who could invest also, and started his own company, Birdhouse Projects along with his own skate team. Despite the skateboard industry taking a nosedive, they viewed it as an opportunity that would weed out all the wannabes for them. They were one of the those fortunate enough to weather it out.
From about 1992 to 1994 Birdhouse Projects appeared to be on life support. With his wife pregnant, an attempt at a "regular" job was made. With $8,000 loaned from his parents, meals of Taco Bell and lots of Ramen Noodles, he put together a makeshift video editing system in an attempt to make a living as a video editor, but alas it did not work out as described in more detail in the book.
Things took a quick swing for the better in 1995 at the first of ESPN's annual "Extreme Games", later simply the "X Games," the action-sports answer to the Olympics. As detailed in the book, Tony quickly became the "face" of the games and as a result of both his added name recognition and the elevated profile of the sport due to the X Games, Birdhouse sales took off. By 1997, licensing deals were abundant also.
1998 saw the advent of Hawk Clothing, with exclusive rights eventually sold to Kohl's. Between that and his foray into high-end apparel in 2002, many lessons were learned that could probably fill a book on its own.
During the 1999 X Games Tony treated the world to the first "900" ever, a maneuver that entailed 2 1/2 midair spins off a giant "vert" ramp. The anarchist attitude of the entire subculture influencing the ways of corporate culture were quite evident at this event. A big take-away for any business reader.
The seeds of "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater" video game franchise were spawned in 1997 which would produce its first incarnation in 1999 and continue year after year through publication of this book. Tony delves into the offers and strategies from its inception to becoming the best selling action-sports franchise of all time. Here we have an instance where against all advice, business decisions that only he could make, paid off more handsomely than anyone could ever have expected.
The early 2000's brought about new and very different ideas which in turn brought about even more financial reward, in most cases, or at the very least, a whole lot of excitement.
From a "corporate shake-up" in his Blitz distribution company to one of his most ambitious projects ever, Tony's brand continued to soar. Details on the creation of the Boom Boom HuckJam "arena tour, taking 14 semi-trucks for equipment and 8 tour buses for a 60-person crew, demonstrate the creativity and energy Tony possesses. Along the way we see how he makes adjustments to the show year to year as he tunes it into a well-oiled, fun, and profitable machine.
We round out the timeline with the power of the Internet as harnessed by Tony. He makes this power more tangible in fewer and more direct words than I've seen in just about any publication. From the success and craziness of his Twitter Easter Swag Hunt to the once potential closing of his ShredOrDie.com social site, lessons abound in this chapter.
Before we come to a close here, we can't forget to mention the lighter side of his trials and tribulations in Hollywood that are interspersed throughout the book. Like the time when he tried to get that 3D movie deal done with Tom Cruise, or that follow-up to Michael Jordan's "Space Jam" entitled "Skate Jam", and certainly we must note that bio-pic where Tony had to describe his "first encounters" with a screenwriter, which I believe he called a concept of "supreme existential strangeness."
Finally, we would be terribly remiss not to mention or minimize the final chapter entitled "Giving Back" that begins to document his philanthropic endeavors. Coupled with his more personal chapter featuring excepts from blogs and journals we are taken to places like Sierra Leone and his involvement in the "Sport for Good Foundation." One of their programs provides traumatized children a chance to simply be kids again through sports. These were the ones who had been forced into combat, labor camps, and other horrible situations, some ongoing, mostly during that country's darker war-torn years. A very touching moment. Domestically, the Tony Hawk Foundation continues to work year long to help neighborhoods in need. True to form, he ends the book as he states in the books' very first chapter, when talking to his more youthful readers, "If you get some extra money in your pocket, give back." He obviously lends a lot of credibility to this advice by truly leading by example.Final Thoughts:
The only difficulty I may have found with the book was a little ambiguity as to who the intended audience was, however that may have been due to a worthwhile attempt to try to make it accessible to everyone, from those with a passing interest in the Tony Hawk story, to the businessperson who has an interest in action-sports or marketing in general, or the teenager with dreams of becoming a pro skater. This is most notably exemplified when providing advice...
"Gravitate toward sponsors and licensees that are willing to
collaborate on, or even give your team control over, the look
and feel of marketing material, no matter how seemingly
insignificant. It's allowed us to weave a thread of graphic
continuity through a wide range of products." (Obviously to
the businessperson.)
or "Don't rebel for rebellion's sake. In fact, rebellion shouldn't
even factor into it. If the thing you love and do best is
viewed as rebellious, then, yes, embrace your inner Che
Guevara. But don't let the cool police dictate your dreams.
Think of it this way: If your passion is dismissed as mainstream
and dorky, that makes your insurgency all the braver. Do it because
you love it, not because you're worried about what others-teachers,
friends, that hot emo chick who sits alone by the bike rack at
lunch-will think." (Obviously, NOT to the businessperson.)
This is a great read. If you're even remotely interested in the action-sports industry, or possibly a pro skater looking for some sound advice in handling, or how not to handle, your business affairs, or just a young kid wanting to know what it takes to "Be like Mike... or Tony", you can't go wrong with this book. I loved it. I'm sure you will too.How Did I Get Here: The Ascent of an Unlikely CEO Overview

Business Stripped Bare: Adventures of a Global Entrepreneur Review"...enjoy your life. You only get one."
If you have read previous Sir Richard Branson's books; you have read most of it already. However, this book, "Business Stripped Bare: Adventures of a Global Entrepreneur", Sir Richard Branson focused solely on the business side of his life. Actually, all his life is about business! Unlike other business book writers, he has the first-hand experience in Virgin. In this book, he covered lots of topics. A quote from the book "So all I can do for you now (and I firmly believe that this is all anyone can honestly do) is map the territory I've seen. The good news is, I've covered a lot of territory."
Contents
- Introduction
- People: Find Good People - Set Them Free
In this chapter, he generally wrote about the culture in Virgin.
- Brand: Flying the Flag
Richard Branson wrote exclusively on Virgin Blue in Australia and how he fought hard to beat the competition and established the Virgin brand there.
- Delivery: Special Delivery
Among other things, he started the chapter with Virgin Trains and how it reshaped the industry in UK. He moved onto how he run Virgin Records and how he started Virgin Mobile in UK and in the US.
- Learning from Mistakes and Setbacks: Damage Report
Failure to acquire the bank, Northern Rock, is the focus of this chapter. Richard Branson is also subjected to mistake and he wrote on how to bounce back.
- Innovation: A Driver for Business
Virgin Galactic is going to be huge and tell me after you read this chapter that you don't want to travel into space!
- Entrepreneurs and Leadership: Holding on and Letting Go
He wrote about his experience with Nelson Mandela and how he set up Global Elders to tackle the humanity issues around the world.
- Social Responsibility: Just Business
This chapter is fantastically inspiring. He separated it into two parts. The first is about his activities to relieve Africa from HIV and Aids. He also wrote about Bill Gates and how they shared philanthropy to make the difference in the world. The other part is the climate change issue. You heard it all before but instead of pouring fear to you, Richard Branson offers you hope.
- Epilogue: Success
...
This book is not written as an autobiography. I think of an ideal business book and I'll compare Business Stripped Bare to it; a book that is easy to read, distinct, practical, credible, insightful, and provides great reading experience.
Ease of Understanding: 8/10: Richard Branson wrote it in plain language and make the readers follow him easily. The drawback of the book is that sometimes, the issues jump back and forth from mobile to records to airline to health clubs to finance and so on! Anyway, the part on Virgin Galactic (the rocket science) is not rocket-scientifically difficult to understand!
Distinction: 7/10: Although his life experience is one of its kind, there are other books on this already namely "Losing My Virginity" and "Screw It, Let's Do It" by... Richard Branson...! However, the way he explained the general ideas of people, innovation, brand, etc (the usual business terms) through his experience is unlike those typical business books that litter these contents with figures, theories, graphs, models, metaphors and so forth.
Practicality: 5/10: Richard Branson offers no solid steps to encourage people, enrich brand, turbocharge delivery, foster leadership, and so on. He believes that everyone has his/her own story and way. He did not say that following him is the best approach to business but he made you think of your own. However, his general comments (with his experience as the credentials) are valuable and you cannot really dispute them.
Credibility: 10/10: His ideas are proven; people, brand, delivery, leadership, and so on. He made it work. Where is the better place to find the idea of business and entrepreneurship other than the words of one of the greatest global entrepreneurs?
Insight: 7/10: Although Richard Branson do not describe the ideas of innovation, brand, people, social responsibility with academic researches and scientific findings, he wrote it from his experience which is more valuable than most researches. Not that researches are insignificant but his life should be taught as a module in business schools. But if you already read his other books, this book will offer you only few new contents.
Reading Experience: 10/10: This book is like a journey into one of the most adventurous businessmen in the world. Like he said, the book (his life) covers a lot of territory. If you like reading other people's life, there is no better person to read than Richard Branson. This book is like an adventure that it starts out with serious business contents with sparks of excitement and ends with good causes and social responsibility that we can make a difference not on but to Earth.
Overall: 7.8/10: This book is encouraging; it encourages you to go out and start a business. This book is motivating, it motivates you to make your business exciting. This book is inspiring; it inspires you to make you business meaningful and virtuous. This book will not make you want to be Richard Branson but it will make you want to have a great business life. This autobiographical business book is for everyone who loves business. If you have read Richard Branson's book before, do not expect it to be something totally new. If you have not, I don't see a reason why shouldn't you give it a try.

Jewish Wisdom for Business Success: Lessons from the Torah and Other Ancient Texts ReviewI don't say that lightly. I have read many business advice books and this tops them all. What you find in this book are nine pivotal lessons and wisdom teachings that are applicable to both business and life. What others authors might spend an entire book on are presented in this book in an engaging and concise manner in one chapter. In this sense you are getting nine books in one.
This book is heavily based on the Old Testament and uses stories from Moses, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Pharaoh to teach important business lessons.
The premise of the book is that the Old Testament is a repository of timeless wisdom and Jewish people have made use of that wisdom throughout the ages leading to their success in business and other areas. The authors of Jewish Wisdom for Business Success decipher that wisdom and share it with the readers in an engaging and practical manner.
Each wisdom teaching is followed by an interesting and relevant contemporary business story and then two pearls of wisdom that the authors entitle "insight for business" followed by an equally pertinent "wisdom for life" which shows how the same lesson can be used to improve the readers personal life.
The book starts off with lesson about how to overcome fear using the story of the Israelites at the Sea of Reeds being chased by the Egyptian army. The lessons from that chapter, as well as from all the other chapters in the book, are extremely relevant and timely as the current financial crisis unfolds.
The next chapter talks about the importance of finding one's authentic inner will power and gives important pointers how to find it. This chapter will really help the reader in a concrete manner find their unique niche in life and work.
Chapter three deals with humility and business and gives a refreshing take on the concept of ego and humility offering four models of ego.
Chapter four deals with the need to balance one's management style both in business and in life. Chapter five gives the reader invaluable tips for negotiating--one of the best chapters on the subject I have ever read.
Chapter six deals with the all important concept of failure and gives concrete steps how to avoid failure including a regular "audit of the soul" and maintains that when seen from the proper perspective their really in no such things as failure.
Chapter seven stakes out three models of entrepreneurship and offers its own unique concept of an especially fulfilling manner of doing business that it coins "spiritual entrepreneurship." Immense wisdom for how to view the money making process.
Chapter eight gives an impressive overview of the power of attraction and how it works. In this chapter you get "The Secret," "Think and Grow Rich" and numerous other Power of Attraction books in one.
The final chapter deals with the importance of having an intellectual emotional balance in one's life and business dealings.
Each chapter ends with a meditation and a guide how to use the meditations is also provided at the back of the book.
This book is packed full with great advice and wisdom packaged in an interesting an engaging manner. I give it a full five stars because there aren't six stars available.Jewish Wisdom for Business Success: Lessons from the Torah and Other Ancient Texts Overview

The Corner Office: Indispensable and Unexpected Lessons from CEOs on How to Lead and Succeed ReviewFirst, the author is a New York Times Sunday business columnist, and he knows what he is talking about. He compared different businesses and their CEOs. He wanted to find out why some people succeeded better than the others - was it the way they led or was there something else that made them differ from the others?
This book evaluates the persons based on their characters and personal attributes.
The author has interviewed and observed 75 CEOs and corporate executives, including companies like Aflac, Xerox, Continental Airlines, Cisco, Intercontinental Hotels, Timberland, and Yahoo.
You will learn a lot of how these examplary CEOs operate and evaluate their employees, and how their daily decisions affect the business and other employees.
But, it's not just the business decisions that are evaluated in the office but also the facial expressions and how you dress up...
A quote of the book:
"CEOs have learned firsthand what it takes to succeed and rise to the top of an organization. From the corner office, they can watch others attempt a similar climb, and notice the qualities that set people apart. As they evaluate talent, they learn to divine why one person is more likely to succeed than another. When they bring in talent from the outside, they watch as some new hires blend in better than others. Who succeeds? Who fails? Why? It's a feedback loop that expands with every additional person they manage, creating a kind of laboratory for studying the qualities that enable people to succeed."
The book is divided in 3 parts:
part 1: Succeeding
part 2: Managing
part 3: Leading
I ordered the kindle edition, and for some reason, my kindle version did not allow me to do any serches in this book. I was a bit disappointed that I had not put any bookmarks while I read it because afterwards it was hard to find some topics.
I found it interesting to read how the CEOs built teams and how they value different chracteristics.
