Machers And Rockers: Chess Records And The Business Of Rock & Roll (Enterprise (W.W. Norton Hardcover)) ReviewMachers and Rockers is an embarrassment to the publishing industry. Just about everything the author knows about Chess Records and the Chess brothers was lifted from Nadine Cohodas's vastly superior book, Spinning Blues Into Gold. Cohen manages to insert a mistake onto every other page of his book, even to misreading Cohodas's book. For example, the address of the Macomba was 39th and Cottage Grove, not 47th and South Karlov, Muddy Waters was NOT pioneering his new sound in the Checkerboard (a club that came way after the 1940s), Chess was not recording in makeshift studios early on, but in the top-notch Universal Recording, he has Sam Phillips selling Evis's contract to RCA for 30K in one place and 35K in another, he has Etta James singing "Don't Go to Strangers" instead of Etta Jones and then pretends to have listened to it with an evocative description, he has 2120 the last address of Chess when the address was it was 320 E. 21st, he has Ben E. King leading the Moonglows when it was Bobby Lester, and on and on and on. Not only can Cohen not get the facts right, he has absolutely no understanding of the label and its recording legacy. This is a dishonest book written by an author who has absolutely no quams on foisting a worthless book on the public.
If you plan to spend money on a book about Chess Records and the Chess brothers I emplore you to invest it in the tremendously researched and far more interesting Spinning Blues Into Gold. Books like Marchers and Rockers need to be ground up into pulp as fast as possible to avoid infecting the public discourse on this famous label.Machers And Rockers: Chess Records And The Business Of Rock & Roll (Enterprise (W.W. The Ghosn Factor: 24 Inspiring Lessons From Carlos Ghosn, the Most Successful Transitional CEO (Mighty Managers Series) ReviewAt first glance, Miguel Rivas-Micoud's book about auto industry CEO Carlos Ghosn's 24 top management philosophies seems to focus on advice you already know: establish a clear vision, focus on priorities, put profits first. It is a big challenge for an author to explain precisely how a brilliant manager like Ghosn does his job so much better than most other people do similar jobs. There's the rub: Even managers who know what to do may not know exactly how to execute their work with artistry. To his credit, Rivas-Micoud offers 24 clear management concepts from Ghosn, and tries to convey the magic of how Ghosn leads with such symphonic success. getAbstract acknowledges the value of the principles Rivas-Micoud outlines. These are solid, if not fresh, touchstones from a business superstar. The Ghosn Factor: 24 Inspiring Lessons From Carlos Ghosn, the Most Successful Transitional CEO (Mighty Managers Series) Overview

The Boss: A Novel ReviewStan Pottinger never disappoints. His books are infused with a realism that makes them larger than fiction, a rare quality that belies the fact that THE BOSS, his latest novel, is only his fourth. In many ways it is also his best.
THE BOSS is set within the oil industry, arguably the most important element of our modern world. Spin Patterson runs Gulf-Tex Oil, a company that he inherited from his father-in-law and has transformed into a major oil industry player with a combination of brains, cunning and unscrupulousness. Max McLennon, a second-generation employee at Gulf-Tex, is Patterson's protégé and almost his greatest admirer. McLennon is staking everything and everyone on the development of Black Eyes, a tool that has the potential to transform the world by giving oil companies the ability to detect oil far below the earth's surface rather than engaging in the costly and often futile practice of drilling where they think oil may be had.
Patterson is a high roller with nerves of steel and a ruthless drive who will roll over anything or anyone that gets in his way. McLennon is the opposite of Patterson, an upright individual who can sympathize with the working man but who has the tendency to freeze under pressure. The presence of Tacoma Reed, the intelligent and exotic legal for Gulf-Tex, complicates matters for both men, as Patterson attempts to beat the odds and revitalize Gulf-Tex from a major setback --- even as his actions may result in the sacrifice of everything and everyone he holds dear.
Meanwhile, McLennon is given the opportunity to make things right for the people Patterson has damaged. It soon becomes clear though that he is playing a high-stakes game for which he is outclassed. Help arrives at the last moment from two unexpected sources, but it may be too late --- even as THE BOSS races toward an exciting and explosive conclusion.
Pottinger could have phoned in a tale of greed and corruption that would have played well with the masses and conformed to the popular, if simplistic, worldview of the oil industry. Instead, he has chosen at least in part to put a human face on a difficult enterprise. Yes, there are billions of dollars to be made in the oil industry, but there are also billions upon billions of dollars to be lost. The process of finding oil is extremely difficult; extracting it is all the more so. It is a dangerous and dirty business, the essence of which Pottinger captures well on all levels, explaining complicated concepts in an understandable manner without dumbing them down. I submit that one will not be able to read THE BOSS without thinking of the book the next time one fills up the tank.
Pottinger also does a magnificent job with characterization here. Patterson and McLennon are excellent protagonists. Though flawed in different ways, they are believable, each having detracting and sympathetic traits that ultimately result in a highly ironic ending for both.
THE BOSS is as readable a work as any that you'll encounter this year.

Catching Our Flag: Behind the Scenes of a Presidential Impeachment ReviewRead this book.

You probably will not like it. It will not make you feel good. It may even make you want to throw up. However, having lived through these momentous events in our history, perhaps with only the media's version of the "facts," you need to know what this book has to say. A small group of Congressmen knowingly sacrificed their careers to prevent our flag from touching the ground as it symbolically fell from the highest office in our land. Here is the inside story from a real-life American hero.

A stirring page-turner. Highly recommended.

Haunting Legacy: Vietnam and the American Presidency from Ford to Obama ReviewThe authors chronicle how Vietnam Syndrome affected the foreign policies of Presidents Ford to Obama. Therefore, not all foreign policy "events" from these administrations are addressed: there is no discussion of Iran-Contra, for example. I was skeptical of this work, concerned that the thesis was forced and contrived. For the vast majority of the book, this is a potential problem that is avoided, due largely to careful selection of specific foreign policy decisions (see above). There is little if any original, earth-shattering research, but it's concise, analytical, and meaningful. Unless one is a historian or reads historical journals, the book is full of insights. For example, there is fascinating discussion of Reagan's uniquely complicated relationship with Cap Weinberger. It's definitely worth a read if you're interested in this general topic.Haunting Legacy: Vietnam and the American Presidency from Ford to Obama Overview

Power Genes: Understanding Your Power Persona--and How to Wield It at Work ReviewI read a lot of business books, and this one truly was unique. I saw myself in about three of the types--Pleaser, Charmer, and Inspirer. I learned so much reading about all of them. I think Craddock's approach is right on. So much of our business lives is impacted by deeper influences. The book is written in a clear, accessible way. And while the examples are of Sr. people, midlevel managers can learn a lot from this too. Even people just starting in their careers.

Better Under Pressure: How Great Leaders Bring Out the Best in Themselves and Others ReviewLook at any newspaper or magazine article featuring the CEOs interviewed in "Better Under Pressure" and you'll likely encounter the oft-repeated leadership tales we've heard again and again. If you like re-reading those, this isn't the book for you. Somehow, Justin Menkes broke past the sound bites and achieved a writer's dream: He got these household name CEOs to tell gripping, candid, never-before-shared stories that must have their PR teams wringing their hands. These are the kinds of revealing anecdotes about tough choices that expose why and how these leaders have reached the pinnacle of greatness.
But as instructive it is to learn why some leaders succeed, it's certainly just as instructive (and more fun) to read why - and how - others fail. The author's unique position within the world-class executive search firm Spencer Stuart gives him access to hundreds of confidential assessments of leaders who have been considered for the top positions in the world's most prestigious Fortune 500 companies. Without disclosing names (though it's sure fun to try and guess who they are!), Justin Menkes takes us step by step through a series of spectacular leadership blunders. He then explains why these leaders buckled at moments in which other CEOs would have shone.
This isn't a simple "how to" book, and I urge readers not to approach it this way. Instead, consider "Better Under Pressure" a thoughtful manual of excellence that teaches us to recognize how we confront and handle the stress that naturally accompanies leadership in the 21st century. Justin Menkes then gives the tools, exercises, and encouragement to help leaders (and their organizations) achieve the same results as the successful CEOs interviewed for this book.Better Under Pressure: How Great Leaders Bring Out the Best in Themselves and Others Overview

Peaks and Valleys: Making Good And Bad Times Work For You--At Work And In Life ReviewThe first Spencer Johnson book I read was Who Moved My Cheese. This book follows the same formula. The reader is told a story. At points in the story the author stops and explains a self-help message, learned by one or more characters, which is relevant to the reader. A series of self-help messages (which are relevant individually or as a group) lead to a conclusion about how to make life better.
This story focuses on a man who is troubled by life. A friend tells him a story about a man, also troubled by life, who lives in a valley and makes a trek up a peak to see a wise man. The man also makes other treks up and down other peaks and valleys.
In this story the man learns that peaks and valleys are part of life. The key to living a richer life is how you perceive and address the peaks and valleys and what you learn while you are traversing the peaks and valleys.
I have found the information in Spencer Johnson's books often times to be intuitive. For instance one message in this book is "You can have fewer bad times when you appreciate and manage your good times wisely."
Yet Spencer Johnson also addresses truths that I often want to forget. One message is "The pain in a valley can wake you up to a truth you have been ignoring."
Finally Spencer Johnson always manages to come up with a couple of things I had not really thought about. For instance one message is "The path out of a valley appears when you choose to see things differently."
As mentioned these messages correspond to events in the story. Spencer Johnson is most effective when the events in the story lead the reader to the message. In fact, when he is at this best the author does not even need to state the message because the reader will get the message without having to read it.
If you liked Spencer Johnson's works before you will be pleased with Peaks and Valleys. If you have never read anything by him and you are looking for a story which leads you to key truths about life, without a bunch of analysis, then you will enjoy this work.

The Corner Office: Indispensable and Unexpected Lessons from CEOs on How to Lead and Succeed ReviewFirst, the author is a New York Times Sunday business columnist, and he knows what he is talking about. He compared different businesses and their CEOs. He wanted to find out why some people succeeded better than the others - was it the way they led or was there something else that made them differ from the others?
This book evaluates the persons based on their characters and personal attributes.
The author has interviewed and observed 75 CEOs and corporate executives, including companies like Aflac, Xerox, Continental Airlines, Cisco, Intercontinental Hotels, Timberland, and Yahoo.
You will learn a lot of how these examplary CEOs operate and evaluate their employees, and how their daily decisions affect the business and other employees.
But, it's not just the business decisions that are evaluated in the office but also the facial expressions and how you dress up...
A quote of the book:
"CEOs have learned firsthand what it takes to succeed and rise to the top of an organization. From the corner office, they can watch others attempt a similar climb, and notice the qualities that set people apart. As they evaluate talent, they learn to divine why one person is more likely to succeed than another. When they bring in talent from the outside, they watch as some new hires blend in better than others. Who succeeds? Who fails? Why? It's a feedback loop that expands with every additional person they manage, creating a kind of laboratory for studying the qualities that enable people to succeed."
The book is divided in 3 parts:
part 1: Succeeding
part 2: Managing
part 3: Leading
I ordered the kindle edition, and for some reason, my kindle version did not allow me to do any serches in this book. I was a bit disappointed that I had not put any bookmarks while I read it because afterwards it was hard to find some topics.
I found it interesting to read how the CEOs built teams and how they value different chracteristics.

The Keys to the White House: A Surefire Guide to Predicting the Next President ReviewThe casual reader might not realize it, but this book is a significant piece of social science. Lichtman and Soviet seismologist (!) Volodia Keilis-Borok threw about 300 variables into a computer and let it find the ones that differentiate between popular-vote winners and losers in every Presidential election from 1860 through 1980. (For those few who would know and care, they used what is known in the English-language literature as kernel discriminant function analysis.) The model produced correct calls in the elections since. This is remarkable. 1988 and 1992 were not easy, as the polls changed dramatically during the campaigns. In 2000, only two sources called Gore's popular-vote win: the last Zogby poll before the election, and the 13 Keys nearly a year in advance! Many political scientists, pundits, and commentators are unhappy with this model, since it implies that much of the ideology, campaign strategy and tactics, image polishing, etc. they care so much about don't really affect the outcome: it's about governance, not campaigning. Ignore their howls of protest. The model works, and Lichtman has explained it well, in easily readable style. The Keys to the White House: A Surefire Guide to Predicting the Next President Overview

Good Guys and Bad Guys: Behind the Scenes with the Saints and Scoundrels of American Business (and Everything in Between) Review
Great journalists are renowned for "getting the story" and then telling it well because they are gifted raconteurs whose keen analytical minds focus on who and what are most interesting as well as most significant. They suggest implications that help their readers (and viewers) to gain a greater understanding of what the "story" means. In recent years, my favorite journalists include Ken Auletta, Elizabeth Drew, Thomas Friedman, Hendrick Hertzberg, Jeffrey Toobin...and Joe Nocera. For almost thirty years, Nocera has written articles for a wide range of publications that include The New York Times (for which he writes a Saturday column, "Talking Business") and its Sunday magazine as well Esquire, GQ, Fortune, Money, Slate, and Texas Monthly. What we have in this volume is a collection of articles about various "good guys & bad guys," written over a period from 1982 until 2007.
He divides his material within 14 chapters. The articles of special interest to me are these:
Two articles about Boone Pickens, "It's Time to Make a Deal" in Chapter 1 and "Return of the Raider" in Chapter 14, that serve as "book ends" to all the other articles in between
His profile of Steve Jobs ("Jobs Agonistes") in Chapter 2
His analysis of Charlie Merrill and his dysfunctional relations with members of his family, especially his sons
His profile of Warren Buffett ("Saint Warren of Omaha") in Chapter 8
His explanation of "our love-hate relations with Wal-Mart" in Chapter 13
Obviously, other readers will have different favorites among the 26 articles assembled in this volume. However different the subjects and circumstances may be, however, all of them are exceptionally well-written, informative, and (more often that not) highly entertaining.
Here in Dallas, we have a Farmers Market area near downtown at which several vendors eagerly offer slices of fresh fruit as samples. In that same spirit, I now offer a sequence of three brief excerpts from the profile of Warren Buffett with the hope that they provide at least a "taste" of Nocera's style and perspective.
Why doesn't everyone invest the way Buffett does and, therefore, achieve the same results?
"I think the answer is twofold. First, truly great investing requires a temperament that very few people have. For most of us, it is difficult not to panic when the market tanks, for instance. It is hard not to want to jump on the hot stock, even if we know nothing about the business. The ups and downs of the market are stomach-churning events. The fundamental equanimity required to be a great investor is an extremely rare thing."
"The second reason we don't invest like Buffett is that his methods are far more complicated than they sound. Think about it: When Buffett talks about the `economic prospects' of a potential investment, what he means is that he wants to be able to see where the business will be 10 years from now. If he can see the business remaining dominant for the next decade, he'll consider buying the stock."
"One of the most important reasons for difference [i.e. being able to determine whether or not a business will remain dominant for the next decade] goes almost entirely unacknowledged among those who hope to find in Buffett an easily reproducible investing style. He is a genius when it comes to numbers. `Accounting,' he likes to say,' is the language of business.' It is a language in which his own fluency is unsurpassed, and which gives him an enormous competitive advantage. Usually, all he needs is a quick glance at a balance sheet to know whether he's interested in buying a company or not - because he finds meaning in numbers that the rest of us don't."
I envy those who have read only a few (if any) of the articles (including his Times columns) that Nocera has written for almost 30 years. Now in this single volume, they have some of his best...thus far.
Bravo!Good Guys and Bad Guys: Behind the Scenes with the Saints and Scoundrels of American Business (and Everything in Between) Overview

What to Ask the Person in the Mirror: Critical Questions for Becoming a More Effective Leader and Reaching Your Potential ReviewI had been looking for a book that would offer actionable advice and
suggestions on how to better manage my time and set priorities for me and my
team. Starting with a "clean sheet of paper" has been one of the
most valuable exercises in the book. I have read books about leadership
before, but they always seemed very academic and so abstract that they
weren't actually relevant in the real world- or to me and my work in particular- but
this book is different. It's obvious from the start that Kaplan is
someone who has been there and understands what its like
to actually run an organization. I could have used this book when I was just starting out! What to Ask the Person in the Mirror: Critical Questions for Becoming a More Effective Leader and Reaching Your Potential Overview

Dick: The Man Who Is President ReviewI received my copy of Dick on Sept 7 and read it in two hours. I could not put it down. It is a terrific read, and is filled with eye-opening, even eye-popping, material about Vice-President Dick Cheney. Nichols's case that Cheney runs the government and that he is not to be trusted is convincing. He provides evidence to convict. There are scores of books out to fill the appetite of people alarmed by the Bush-Cheney administration, and many of them are quite good. But I have seen nothing as original and as important at Dick. It is an astonishing indictment of our news media that so much elementary information about the VP has been unknown prior to the publication of this book. No matter what one's politics may be, no one who reads Dick will ever view this administration the same again.
John Nichols is one of the finest journalists of our times, and this book will only cement his reputation.Dick: The Man Who Is President Overview

The Heart of an Executive: Lessons on leadership from the life of King David ReviewIf you are the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, a high school teacher, the President or the Prime Minister, a parent, a middle executive, the owner of a small business or a section head for small band of workers, this book is for you!
Richad Phillips beautifully and poingnantly highlights the true essence of leadership--leadership built not upon its own successes, but is bound up in the loyalty to, and successes of the people who make the leader who he or she is.
He balances the personal qualities which distinguish a great leader with the realities of the dark side of the comforts, accolades and power accompanying leadership....dark recesses of David's heart that came to fruition in David's career: Potential self-created Goliaths in our own careers and lives ultimately crushing ourselves and those who follow.
Phillip's resolve to faithfully and colorfully portrays David's outstanding model for leadership while allowing David's flaws to be examined, actually gives us two models: What we can do to become greater leaders; what we can proactively do to maintain our integrity and honor.
If you seek to investigate how your own heart influences your leadership style and effectiveness, read this book. The Heart of an Executive: Lessons on leadership from the life of King David Overview

Finance for Executives: Managing for Value Creation ReviewEvery business owner, executive, accountant, banker and maybe even your lawyer should have this valuable book on their desktop! The authors demystify the art of finance and suggest pragmatic approaches and solutions for every day capital uses and needs. This attractive and attractively priced book is written in an innovative way, making it a useful quick desktop reference as well as an MBA level finance text. The glossary by itself is worth the price of the book. How astounding that the authors are both French, yet write with more clarity in English than any American finance writer I have read of late!
