Kingdomality is an easy and powerful way to understand how others at your workplace process information, make decisions, and perceive others. It is also applicable in personal relationships, and has helped me numerous times from jumping to conclusions simply because someone did not respond the way I thought they should. Think Big, Act Small: How America's Best Performing Companies Keep the Start-up Spirit Alive ReviewJennings' highly innovative, at times refreshingly unorthodox thinking was evident in his previously published books, It's Not the Big That Eat the Small...It's the Fast That Eat the Slow (co-authored with Laurence Haughton) and then Less Is More: How Great Companies Use Productivity As a Competitive Tool in Business.
As I read this volume, I was reminded of at least some of the material in Sun Tzu's The Art of War and, especially, the strategies recommended in a section called "Estimates" in Samuel B. Griffith's superb translation. For example: "All warfare is based on deception. Therefore, when capable, feign incapacity; when active, inactivity. When near, make it appear that you are far away; when far away, that you are near. Offer the enemy a bait to lure him; feign disorder and strike him. When he concentrates, prepare against him; where he is strong, avoid him. Pretend inferiority and encourage his arrogance. When he is united, divide him. Attack when he is unprepared; sally out when he does not expect you." You get the idea.
Jennings is a staunch and eloquent advocate of this principle: Do much more and do it much better, faster, and do it with less. OK, but how? The answer to that question was revealed by rigorous and extensive research which he and his two associates (Brian Solon and Greg Powell) conducted. They began with 70,000 companies as candidates for designation as the best performing companies in the U.S. Among all of them, which have increased their revenue and profits by at least 10% for ten years or longer? Only nine qualified: Cabela's, Dot Foods, Koch Industries, Medline Industries, O'Reilly Automotive, PETCO Animal Supplies, SAS Institute, Sonic Drive-in, and Strayer Education.
Back to "How?" Jennings identifies ten "Building Blocks" which, in combination, explain why each of those in an obviously mixed bag of companies has been and continues to be a best performer (i.e. among the top one-hundredth of 1% of all U.S. companies). It would be a disservice to both Jennings and to those who read this brief commentary to list them and then comment on each out of the context within which Jennings so skillfully presents them. Suffice to say that all organizations (regardless of their size or nature) need to have all ten Building Blocks as a core foundation on which to increase their revenue and profits by at least 10% and then continue to do so year after year after year.
How revealing that the CEOs whom Jennings and his research associates interviewed indicate little (if any) interest in any of Sun Tzu's deception strategies...nor in what their competitors are up to, for that matter. They seem wholly preoccupied with sticking to their own "knitting," focusing on what their companies can do best, how to do it even better, and thereby deliver even greater value to their customers. Also, each seems determined to nourish and enhance the quality of life as well as standard of living of everyone involved in the enterprise. This is precisely what Jennings means when referring to building communities, Building Block #9. Employees, customers, and allies should be viewed as "partners" and treated as such.
Ultimately, one of the most formidable challenges for those in any organization is to achieve and then maintain an appropriate balance of "thinking BIG" while "acting small." Hence the importance of Section Three, "The Quad: A Self-Evaluation and Ranking," in which Jennings "breaks down the title of the book into four scenarios, each represented by a quadrant":
TSAS Think Small, Act Small
TSAB Think Small, Act Big
TBAB Think Big, Act Big
TBAS Think Big, Act Small
He applies this template to each of the ten Building Blocks. It remains for each reader to complete the self-evaluation, one which helps to measure her or his own organization's current situation. The details of this exercise are best revealed within the text, pages 189-201.
I highly recommend this book for reasons previously indicated but also because I cannot recall a prior time since the Great Depression when it was more difficult for companies to increase their revenue and profits by at least 10% for ten years or longer. Consider these statistics which Michael Gerber shares in his recently published E-Myth Mastery: "Of the 1 million U.S. small businesses started this year [2005], more than 80% of them will be out of business within 5 years and 96% will have closed their doors before their 10th birthday." Chilling statistics indeed. Here in a single volume is a rigorous analysis of how nine quite different companies have achieved and then sustained their "full economic and human potential."
How important and potentially valuable is this book? Please re-read the statistics provided by Gerber.Think Big, Act Small: How America's Best Performing Companies Keep the Start-up Spirit Alive Overview

Deep Dive: The Proven Method for Building Strategy, Focusing Your Resources, and Taking Smart Action ReviewHaving worked with management in different industries in various parts of the country it has become apartent to me that strategic thinking occurs significantly less than I first thought. Business leaders over the past couple of years seem to be very short term thinkers. While times were good it was easy to cover up bad decisions but now that revenues are down it is very obvious that their acumen was overestimated. I was some what surprread in Rich Horwath's book that 85% of executive leadership spends less than an hour a month discussing strategy, what are they doing the rest of the month? I believe all leaders can use further development in the strategic thinking arena to keep their skills sharp and to enhance their companies performance. Rich Horwath offers in his latest book, "Deep Dive", a plunge into waters of business creativity, and the unseen jewels that reside beneath the surface.
Complacency has caused more damage in corporate America than foreign competition. New strategies and ways of thinking are how we can turn things around. During an economic downturn, when all of your instinct tells you to hold onto your business model at all costs, this is the precise moment when new strategies are needed the most. What "Deep Dive" does is to identify how to maximize the productivity of a brain storming sessions and eliminate any unnecessary risk when implementing a new strategy.
Several great strategic thinking concepts and methods are introduced in "Deep Dive" and are summarized at the end of each chapter. These examples given through out the book can be utilized across any organization in any functional area. Tools such as the OODA Loop and Contextual Radar methods reveal the context in which particular ideas need to flourish. Rich drives home the fundamentals of his program, stating and restating his three central strategic points, `Acumen, Allocation, Action', which form the outline of his chapters.

Rich Horwath has created a wonderful compilation of methods for businesses that make strategic thinking more clear in this complex global marketplace we live in. He provides a complete list of references given where readers can find further information on the particular methods that suit them or their company best. What "Deep Dive" provides is a sense of focus on the importance of constantly shifting the way a business rides the rough and tumble waters of our economic reality.
"Deep Dive" is about being objective and not just following the school of fish swimming along the surface. Leaders looking to delve down below the surface and open their eyes to see what is going on around them will be justly rewarded.Deep Dive: The Proven Method for Building Strategy, Focusing Your Resources, and Taking Smart Action Overview

Guts: 8 Laws of Business from One of the Most Innovative Business Leaders of Our Time ReviewThis book is a refreshing collection of straightforward thoughts and observations about business and leadership from one of the most seasoned, creative, colorful, and highly successful executives of our time-Robert A. Lutz, Chairman of General Motors North America. This revised and updated book contains the blunt, honest wisdom of an authentic maverick leader in the form of his laws of business that have stood the test of time over his thirty years in the car industry, and his rise to the top of Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler.
Organized into three parts, the book opens with the story of Chrysler's second turnaround in the early 1990s. Lutz was part of the executive team that conceived and brought to life one of the most famous and successful muscle cars of all-time: the Viper. Part Two is an in-depth review and validation of Lutz's eight immutable laws of business. The final part is Lutz's corollaries to his laws, or, as he calls them, "The Rest of the Story!"
A former Marine with an ongoing, life-long love affair with the Marine Corps and its leadership practices, Lutz presented many business and leadership concepts and personal anecdotes that reflected and blended his business and Marine Corps backgrounds. From his beliefs about the need for attention to detail and critical performance evaluations, to his emphasis on holistic, empowered, cross-functional teams and the value of a culture that nurtures middle-management dissent of conventional wisdom in open forums, Lutz's insights and experiences were both entertaining and informative.
If the following lists of Lutz's business laws and corollaries even sound remotely appealing to you, read this book - you will not be disappointed.
Lutz's Immutable Laws of Business:
LAW #1: The Customer Isn't Always Right
LAW #2: The Primary Purpose of Business Is Not to Make Money
LAW #3: When Everybody Else Is Doing It, Don't!
LAW #4: Too Much Quality Can Ruin You
LAW #5: Financial Controls Are Bad!
LAW #6: Disruptive People Are an Asset
LAW #7: Teamwork Isn't Always Good
LAW #8: When You Inherit a Really Big Rat's Nest, Don't Try to Lure Them Out With Food. Use a Flamethrower
Lutz's Corollaries
*It's Okay to Be Anal Sometimes
*A Little Fear, in Reality, Ain't All That Bad
*Leadership Is All About Common Sense, Which, Unfortunately, Is Not All That Common
*Some Squeaky Wheels Don't Get the Grease, or Pros and Cons of Being a Change Agent

Management Rev Ed ReviewI'd always thought Management was about practice and good examples you had been lucky to receive during your career. At a certain point of my career though, evidences proved I was not confortable with that statement anymore. I felt Management had its principles, rules, laws, but I was missing the education to prove it and sustain it among coleagues, peers, and my reports. Drucker's "Management" filled that abysmal gap and gave me back the confidence that my "feelings" were not devoid of fundaments.Management Rev Ed Overview

Make It Glow: How to Build a Company Reputation for Human Goodness, Flawless Execution, and Being Best-in-class ReviewIn a universe of business books filled with platitudes and MBA jabber, "Make It Glow" shines through like a beacon. The book's author, Tom DeCotiis, is a PhD. who can write in a very direct and effective manner. His observations about the stages of business development, especially the notion of "wobble," ring true. At some level, the book is an expression of his personal philosophy about honorable conduct in business. And there is nothing more honorable - or profitable - than living up to the tenets of your company's brand.Make It Glow: How to Build a Company Reputation for Human Goodness, Flawless Execution, and Being Best-in-class Overview

Fundamentals of Human Resource Management ReviewThis book includes an excellent spectrum of HR material, covered with a reasonable degree of thoroughness, considering its ambitious scope. It's quite readable, as well, making it easy to digest and retain. In fact, it helped me pass the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification exam from SHRM.
However, the book contains a number of typos, and while most of them aren't serious, it appears that the chapters were renumbered after the answers to the practice questions were already typeset -- making their answer key virtually useless and utterly unreliable. The answers to one chapter's questions are labelled as being for another chapter's ... a real mess.
I got the impression that this book was rushed into print in order to meet some deadline. While the textual content is very good, I caution the reader not to rely on the practice questions, not only because of the answer key problem, but because they are not particularly clear or well-written.Fundamentals of Human Resource Management Overview

Harvard Business Review on Compensation ReviewThis book promised a great deal. Given the "new workforce" paradigm, I was eager to read about new compensation strategies that would meet their different interests.
Instead we got this.
What you'll read here is a rehashing of old, largely academical theories which have been proven flawed or outright wrong by success stories in the field. It was used, for example, as a call to arms by content motivational theorists who still do not believe in variable pay and incentive compensation.
As my mom used to say, if you're looking for trouble, you'll find it. Grinding the old ax that rewarding good performance is just, well, just morally wrong is what many of these articles resonate.
If you've seen a good book of success stories which tie compensation approaches to create powerful, clear business strategy execution, would you let me know what it is?Harvard Business Review on Compensation Overview
