Taking Advice: How Leaders Get Good Counsel And Use It Wisely ReviewThis book is written for leaders who can often find themselves insulated and isolated. The bunker mentality is not generally conducive to good decision making, by the way.
Ciampa says that every leader should be an advice taker. And, different situations call for different kinds of advice. But all good advice takers share these characteristics:
* Skilled advice takers are deliberate in choosing the best type of help and in constructing a network of advisers.
* They manage that network actively, putting it high on their list of priorities.
* They work at building good relationships. To derive the most help from their advisers, they understand that they must take feedback without becoming defensive and, above all, listen with understanding.
* They seek advice and counsel quickly when faced with situations that can affect their plans. They also involve their advisers early in anticipating hindrances.
Every good advice taker has to be a good listener. It's important to be brave enough to select folks as advisers who are not "yes-men" -- and then listen, actually listen, to what is being said. Especially if it's not what you want to hear. That's leadership, regardless of your job title. That's also being open to growth and learning.Taking Advice: How Leaders Get Good Counsel And Use It Wisely Overview

Defining Moments: When Managers Must Choose Between Right and Right ReviewAs an attorney who teaches business ethics inside corporations, I've read many books on this subject. This is the best. It focuses on the way real world ethical dilemmas arise -- not in decisions between right and wrong, but between two options, both of which are "right." This is a short, practical, readable book that really makes you think.Defining Moments: When Managers Must Choose Between Right and Right Overview

Total Leadership: Be a Better Leader, Have a Richer Life ReviewI took two intercontinental flights recently and took the time to go through the "Total Leadership" program. And, before I begin my review, I want to say that over the past ten years or so I've seen an absolute avalanche of "leadership" books come out - most of them gimmicky and useless. This is not one of them and in fact I believe the title may deter people from purchasing this; do not be one of them.
"Total Leadership" is about finding your way when you have multiple responsibilities tugging you in different directions. Until now, I've often felt family pulling me one way, only to find the more time I spend with them the more I resent the time it takes away from work. Similarly, on business trips for example, I fight with feelings of guilt for being away from my family. And that's not to mention the the toll all of this takes on my health, when I'm too busy to exercise or just watch the game with friends. I'm here to say this book can help, like finding the long lost manual and finally figuring our how to do new things with a product, this book acts as a guide to finding a semblance of control in your life. It's not about sacrifice, and it's definitely not found in the idea of "balance", this book advocates a powerful third way: overlapping your domains and drawing boundaries.
What makes this book especially effective are the exercises the author puts the reader through. The reader is asked to define the issue, starting with the multiple responsibilities and challenges s/he faces, then it moves on to defining your domains, where is it that you spend your time? Most of the readers (including myself) would find four areas: self, family, work and community. Then, with domains defined, you can identify stakeholders in each domain and begin the process of finding ways "to live your life in accord with what really matters to you." The reader is asked to discuss his/her vision for a future life (post-change) with trusted individuals s/he has previously identified. A particularly effective step is then speaking with others about living your life differently, such as: your boss, significant other and friends, and getting their opinion and feedback on your plan, and as difficult and challenging as this may be it ends up providing the most powerful incentive to change through accountability and stakeholder buy-in. In many cases, I found that as much as I was building bridges between domains in my life, I was also creating boundaries (for example, no longer do I check my blackberry or the Internet between the hours of 6pm - 9pm.) But some of the biggest changes are personal ones that are for me and my family, other readers will likely find similar decisions they make without necessarily sharing them.
This book is not about easy decisions, or difficult ones, its about drilling down to what's most important in your life and building from there.
Ultimately, this book is required reading once, in my opinion, you are put in a position of responsibility. It is effective in maintaining a mindset conducive to responsible living, it provides a non-cookie cutter approach and it creates change in your life through practical exercises.
For these reasons, this reviewer highly recommends "Total Leadership."Total Leadership: Be a Better Leader, Have a Richer Life Overview

Five Key Principles of Corporate Performance Management Review
Many senior-level executives are about to launch or are now in the midst of performance improvement initiatives of one kind or another such as TQM, Lean, Six Sigma, or some variation thereof. For them especially, the material that Bob Paladino provides in this book will be of substantial value because he offers a remarkably comprehensive briefing on all manner of best practices from a variety of sources which include the U.S. President's Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award recipients, the Kaplan and Norton Global Balanced Scorecard Hall of Fame inductees, recipients of the Deming Quality Award, Fortune magazine's "100 Best Companies to Work For," Best Practice Partner Award recipients selected by APQC (previously known as the American Productivity Center and the American Productivity & Quality Center), and Forbes magazine's "Best Managed Companies." From this abundance of information, Paladino has identified "five key principles" that, in my opinion, are relevant to any organization (regardless of size or nature) that is committed to producing more and better results in less time, and at a lower cost. Hence the importance of effective corporate performance management (CPM).
He carefully organizes his material within nine chapters, devotes a separate chapter to each principle, and then in the final chapter provides a three-step "CPM Diagnostic" to conduct a self-assessment and baseline where each reader is at this point in her or his corporate performance management "journey." (Paladino's choice of the word "journey" is appropriate, given the fact that performance improvement initiatives are best viewed as a "marathon" rather than as a "sprint.") I especially appreciate Paladino's brilliant use of a lean best practice case study approach to strategy management to bring together disparate methods into an integrated, simplified CPM framework.
In fact, most case studies are segmented and extended within Chapters 3-9, coordinated with his focus on a separate best practice in each chapter. The commendably varied exemplar (i.e. high performance) organizations include Crown Castle International, the City of Coral Springs (FL), the Tennessee Valley Authority, LB Foster Company, the American Red Cross, Ricoh, and Sprint Nextel. Supplementary case studies include those of the Florida Department of Health (Chapter 6), Houston Chronicle (Chapter 7), and Raytheon Company (Chapter 8). Important lessons can be learned from these high-performance organizations, lessons that can help others to avoid becoming one of the nine of ten that fail to implement their business strategies.
Paladino cites the results of rigorous and extensive research conducted by Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton that reveals four common barriers: vision (only 5% of the workforce understands the strategy), management (only 15% of executive teams spend more than one hour per month discussing strategy), people (only 25% of managers have incentives linked to strategy), and resources (only 40% of organizations link budgets to strategy). To repeat, important lessons can be learned from these high-performance organizations, lessons that can help others to avoid becoming one of the nine of ten that fail to implement their business strategies.
Whether or not decision-makers who read this book learn these lessons and then take appropriate action in response to them is, of course, for them to decide. There's "bad news" and "good news." First the bad news: Most probably won't. Now the good news: Most probably won't.Five Key Principles of Corporate Performance Management Overview

Leadership Can Be Taught: A Bold Approach for a Complex World ReviewRon Heifetz is clearly one of the seminal leadership scholars, practitioners, and teachers in the field today. This superb volume, by Sharon Daloz Parks, takes off from where his two previous books ("Leadership Without Easy Answers" and "Leadership On the Line") leave off. "Leadership Can be Taught" takes its readers through Heifetz's Harvard Business School course "PAL 101--Exercising Leadership: Mobilizing Group Resources."
For those of us who have studied Heifetz's two previous books and taken courses modeled off his HBS course (as I did at Columbia Teachers College almost a decade ago), "LCBT" provides an excellent refresher. My Columbia TC Professor (who must have TA'd for Heifetz when she was teaching at Harvard's Graduate School of Education) ran an outstanding version of his course in her own right.
Using all of Heifetz's key principles and pedagogical techniques (and a very similar curriculum), she put us through our paces in teaching leadership "adaptively." It was a watershed learning experience of invaluable practical value to me. Although my field is leadership development in secondary-school education (for both teachers and students), I borrow heavily from Heifetz's theory and work at the graduate level.
Although I doubt they were intended this way, I see these 3 works as a sort of trilogy on adaptive leadership. Heiftez's "Leadership On the Line" (co-written with Marty Linsky) is probably the most accessible of the three: clearly the place for any reader to start learning about H's powerful approach. "Leadership Without Easy Answers" is the most scholarly and thoroughly developed (with extensive historical examples, etc.).
Daloz Parks's "LCBT" concentrates on Heifetz's leadership course itself. What is the experience of taking it like for his students? How do--or don't--its lessons stick with them as they resume their professional lives?
Daloz Parks's answers to these questions are balanced, fair, accurate, and leavened with plenty of anecdotal evidence. We get glimpses of classroom interactions, and we hear Professor Heifetz speaking quite candidly about the advantages--as well as challenges--of his dynamic educational approach.
Any serious scholar or teacher of leadership MUST peruse this product of the Harvard Business School Press. One of the beauties of Heifetz's approach is that it works in virtually any area: from business, to education, to public service, etc. Its principles apply equally in the commercial and not-for-profit sectors.
In sum, I can't recommend "Leadership Can be Taught" highly enough to leaders and/or faculty in leadership-development programs of all stripes. Sharon Daloz Parks has done us all a great service in recording the impact of Heifetz's work on those fortunate enough to study with the master himself!Leadership Can Be Taught: A Bold Approach for a Complex World Overview

Management ReviewUnlike most textbooks, I actually enjoy reading every line in this book. I've read the first four chapters straight so far, and I feel like I'm getting a really good understanding of the content and life applications. And the side stories about the companies in today's economy are very interesting. It's fun to know facts like that because you can easily relate the concepts to situations.Management Overview

CEO Material: How to Be a Leader in Any Organization ReviewThis book from Debra Benton, the New York Times Best Seller author, does a fascinating job of telling us what a CEO is supposed to be, and what is meant by leadership.
Debra is the premier world class executive coach and educator who has created a monumental and real basis to judge CEOs. Her trademark extensive research and intensive fact finding interviews with CEOs and others, insight, and clear and easy to understand writing has made a masterpiece that out does her own previous work.
In my opinion, we are all CEOs of our own lives, therefore CEOs of our work and career. This book helps us regardless of where we stand in the corporate organization charts. It shows us the way up in clear and concise steps. This book empowers us to understand what it is to be a CEO and how to lead at any level of the organization.
You do not have to be a CEO to benefit from this book. This book is written for all of us who are working.
In view of all the negative images of CEOs broadcast in media in 2008-2009, this is a timely and productive insight to tell us what is right and what is not right. It helps CEOs understand and implement highest levels of integrity and profitability as two interdependent processes and procedures.
In fact, the entire media is telling us what a CEO and leadership at any level of organization is not supposed to be. This book single-handedly tells us how to be an outstanding CEO, and more importantly, how to lead. As a senior management consultant in Silicon Valley, CA I found the material in this book to be the authoritative confidence builder that many CEOs, leaders, management, and workers have been looking for to find better success in the work place.

The Six Sigma Leader: How Top Executives Will Prevail in the 21st Century ReviewFirst off, it's important to know that this book is not about how to lead Six Sigma, but rather how Six Sigma can help you lead.
In this follow-up to the enormously popular The Six Sigma Way, Pete Pande distills 20 years of experience in making Six Sigma relevant to the challenges of today. The traditional applications of Six Sigma are still critical. But Six Sigma is so much more. This book looks beneath the projects and tools--which are no more than the tip of the Six Sigma iceberg--to explore the underlying principles that have made Six Sigma the most powerful business improvement discipline ever developed. The lessons of The Six Sigma Leader are meaningful to individuals at any level, from senior executive to ambitious team supervisor, and can be effectively applied by leaders whether or not their organizations are implementing Six Sigma.
It's really about disciplining the change management process. The book lays out a cohesive roadmap to apply Six Sigma discipline to the primary leadership challenge of today. The goal is to shed the "bad habits" of leadership and replace them with proven strategies informed by the lessons of Six Sigma. The discipline of Six Sigma can tell you definitively when you are falling into "bad" habits. Even better, it can offer you solid, proven alternatives - a set of "good" habits, objectively identified through vast collective business experience. In short, Six Sigma can be your everyday guide to making choices that make you more effective.
If you've been involved in Six Sigma initiatives, this book shows you how to leverage your Six Sigma wisdom much more broadly. If you know nothing of Six Sigma, this book offers you a reason to explore it as a leadership discipline, even if you never expect to be part of a formal Six Sigma initiative.

Business Agility: Sustainable Prosperity in a Relentlessly Competitive World (Microsoft Executive Leadership Series) ReviewThis is the third book I've read by Mr. Hugos and he never disappoints! Writing in an entertaining style that is easy to understand, informative without being pedantic Mr. Hugos skillfully delivers on making business perform and more profitable in the information economy. I have run a business for a quarter century in an industry where the operative buzz word has always been urgency but after reading Business Agility Sustainable Prosperity in a Relentlessly Competitive world my philosophy of conducting business and my understanding of how businesses should operate have been fundamentally changed.
By introducing and /or elaborating on three concepts OODA, Six Sigma, and Mr. Hugos' own DDB Define Design Build, and melding them all together in a cohesive plan to attain business agility he has delivered a powerful new book to the bible on how to properly conduct business, and how to stretch the almighty profit margin!
The concepts of business agility are cleverly conveyed by his use of drawing analogies from how a sun flower functions to the military tactics of great military minds of the past. While this book was probably written with the idea of making a large enterprise more nimble (it takes a while to turn an ocean liner) I see where the ideas and concepts presented will be useful in my small business (canoes have to be navigated too!)
In this book Mr. Hugos has shown how the old hierarchical controlling ways of doing business should be, must be replaced with a coordinated network approach. An approach that enables innovation, and promotes visibility, training and creates motivation. In this book Mr. Hugos has created a blue print to transform any organization from a staid assembly line, monolithic dinosaur to a dynamic, responsive and adaptive modern firm capable of growing the bottom line.

Agility: Competing and Winning in a Tech-Savvy Marketplace (Microsoft Executive Leadership Series) ReviewAgility describes the dynamics of technology adoption by some of the largest, most successful companies and how they benefited from improved IT productivity. In his analysis, Mueller-Eberstein highlights best practices from internationally renowned firms such as BMW, and Del Monte among other. These are large firms that dedicate themselves to continuous innovation and productivity improvement using technology as a means to achieve this.
As Mr Mueller-Ebstein points out purchasing the most advanced technology is in itself insufficient, other factors such as the organization, firm's culture i.e. the people, are part and parcel of making a firm agile. The lessons learned from this book are invaluable, it is really a must read for firms looking to remain leaders in their industry, forever, on the cutting edge of innovation. As firms continue to invest in technology, they will benefit from the guidance offered in Agility. Drive Business Performance: Enabling a Culture of Intelligent Execution (Microsoft Executive Leadership Series) Review"Drive Business Performance: Enabling a Culture of Intelligent Execution" by Bruno Aziza and Joey Fitts represents much more than a demystification of performance management terminology. The book is neither a re-telling of the benefits of performance management, nor a veiled attempt to shape a business case for PerformancePoint. Instead, the authors introduce novel ideas backed by case study research, culminating in a pervasive and flexible model for business transformation within the scope of performance improvement.
The Culture of Performance (CoP) Model presented by the authors bridges a gap between the establishment of a performance measurement framework (e.g., Balanced Scorecard, TQM, Lean, etc.), and the tools and methods brought to bear in executing performance measurement (read: Business Intelligence). CoP is a comprehensive model for evolving organisations into the strategy-focused enterprises that Drs. Kaplan and Norton envisioned years earlier. To be certain, we all stand on the shoulders of giants.
That the authors chose to include "culture" in the name of their model cannot be understated: it directly addresses organisation-wide cultural transformation as it relates to the adoption of performance management (through the model's six phases). The authors demonstrate, with compelling evidence, that a company is more likely to achieve its desired outcomes when all its members adopt a performance-oriented mindset. Here, case studies on Expedia, Energizer and The Veterans' Health Administration (U.S.) each strike a chord on the sometimes painful transformation to a culture of performance. Aziza and Fitts make these findings practical, encouraging incubation through scored questionnaires, supporting capability models (MAP) and guiding principles. The final chapter of the book provides an excellent summary that aligns said scores to an entry point into the CoP model; this provides a reasonable indication of where an organisation may begin to improve business performance.
This excellent book warrants careful review and consideration-- it represents fresh and illuminating thinking from two of the most prominent figures in the field of performance management. For executives, directors and managers looking to improve business performance (as well as consultants specialising in performance management) consider this book essential reading.
