It's Not a Glass Ceiling, It's a Sticky Floor: Free Yourself From the Hidden Behaviors Sabotaging Your Career Success ReviewIt's not a glass ceiling; it's a sticky floor is a fantastic book for
anyone interested in career development, especially where they aspire
to a senior executive position. The book is written (as the title
implies) primarily for women but most (if not all) the messages apply
equally as well to men. The central premise is that career development
starts by really knowing what you want and what your strengths ,
weaknesses, values, desires and motivations are. Once you know what
success looks like for you and what sort of person you are you can
then start to act to develop your career. In this book the emphasis is
very much on understanding what it takes to move into a leadership
role. The author highlights seven topics which need to be mastered in
order to win a leadership position and in her view it is these areas
that hold you back when you don't address them correctly - the 'sticky
floors' of the title. The areas are: managing you time to achieve some
kind of work/life balance; having a career plan and willingly moving
jobs to implement it; looking at the big picture; having a diverse
network of contacts; understanding company politics; communicating
clearly and with impact; negotiating for what you want. There are
numerous exercises as you go through the book so there is lots of
practical help on 'how to' address the seven topics and there are also
plenty of real life examples contained within the pages including
many from the authors personal experiences of life in corporate
America and building her own business.

Influence Without Authority (2nd Edition) ReviewI'm honored to have received a couple of books for review from Wiley publishing. Influence without Authority by Allan Cohen and David Bradford (second edition) is a classic. Between the covers of this book are not only ideas about the art of getting work done through people, but a host of useful case studies and resources.
One of my first major change management projects, some 12 years ago now, lead me to believe that there had to be a better way to accomplish the cross functional negotiations that need to happen in any major change initiative. Here, in this book, are the explanations for both what worked and what didn't work on that project. Many of the principles listed not only got my head nodding "yes!" but also help me to understand how the hard learned lessons over the past 12 years fit into the overall picture of influencing colleagues, clients, and their employees.
The Cohen-Bradford Model of Influence, while appearing simple, was a bit more difficult to really comprehend. It comprises six "steps" pictured as an inward spiral, and starts at the "outside" with "Assume all are potential allies." Then moves inward with "Clarify your goals and priorities," "Diagnose the world of the other person," "Identify relevant currencies, theirs, yours," "Dealing with relationships," and finally at the center "Influence through give and take." Essentially, this text deals with explaining how this model is applied in a practical manner. Most important is the concept that while for small things, we can and often do intuitively understand the give and take in a transaction, for large complex transactions we need to be more methodical and think through our process, goals, interests and those of our allies. Hence, the model.
Of particular interest to me was this text's recognition that organizational change can be very complicated, and so dedicated several chapters to that process alone. Between these chapters, the case studies providing real life examples, and yes, the model itself, this book is invaluable to those either in or consulting to organizations wanting to move forward - because that means managing complex change and the need to influence people as well as leading them.Influence Without Authority (2nd Edition) Overview

Your Inner CEO: Unleash the Executive Within ReviewThank you Mr. Cox, you are a Master Teacher and you have another winner here in this very compelling book.
Allan Cox's book, "Your Inner CEO", is a true gem and hidden treasure for any executive. It will soon be recognized as a business classic, carefully prepared and documented by a seasoned expert who knows the ropes and has been there, on the front lines, numerous times. It should be required reading for anyone who aspires to be a CEO, is a CEO or finds themselves thrust into a position of leadership and wants to effect true and constructive change within themselves and in the lives of those in his or her environment or field of influence.
Cox systematically shows the reader how to dive within and do the inner house cleaning and self-evaluation and self-discovery needed for one to be clear, effective, productive, practical and powerful on the surface. Highly recommended, especially for those who understand and believe that the top job and head position is open and available to those that have the courage to look within and gently, effortlessly yet constructively, face their weaknesses.
It is refreshing to see that this book truly delivers and helps the reader rediscover, re-boot and get in touch with their hidden goals, unique talents, and core strengths in order to be an effective, confident, enlightened leader.

Seeing Yourself as Others Do: Authentic Executive Presence at Any Stage of Your Career ReviewMost of us have a very different view of ourselves than others have of us. Whether we have a positive or negative view of our appearance, demeanor, or personality, we do not have the right or ability to have others see us in the same way. How they view us depends on which aspects of our lives they see, their own life context, and whether they have interacted with us personally for a length of time or have just heard about us from others. Yes, first impressions do matter and most of us have no idea how we come across in those instances.
Carol Keers and Thomas Mungavan have provided a very helpful guide to understanding this important part of our interactions with others. This book provides techniques and exercises that help you change those perceptions in ways that allow you to manage this important key to your professional and personal success.
The book has nine chapters and I found each of them to be valuable. The first is an introduction to the idea of perception and its very real power to affect our lives. They introduce the first of their acronyms - CLEARLI, which helps you remember what you need to project to have what they call Authentic Executive Presence. The acronym stands for Command, Leverage, Expectations, Audience, Relationship, Listening, and Inspiration. Reading this section and applying it will more than repay you for the book all by itself.
The rest of the chapters take you through the pieces of CLEARLI in detail. Chapter 2 talks about the power of communications and helps you develop a solid style. Chapter 3 is about Charisma and the use of your voice and keeping control of your body, voice, and nerves under stress. Chapter 4 helps you see your opportunities for influence and how to start with the `low hanging fruit' in your life. They also offer a nice primer on politics. Not to make you Machiavellian, but to help you be more aware of what is going on so you don't step on land mines and can use situations to help you rather than get hurt by them.
Chapter 5 provides valuable insights on how to properly set and manage the expectations of others - both at work and in your personal life. I liked the section teaching you how to learn from your anger rather than feeling the need to express it or getting into trouble by losing control. Chapter 6 teaches you how to make a compelling presentation and how to connect with your audience. For many people, making a presentation is something to get through, but these authors show you how to make it an opportunity to build your credibility with those in your audience.
Chapter 7 is about managing relationships including those that happen at a distance. They also talk about healthy conflict versus the poisonous kind most of us experience and the benefits of forgiveness and letting go of the stuff that isn't going to get better anyway. Chapter 8 teaches one of the most important tools any executive can have; the ability to listen and listen much more than you talk. Chapter 9 teaches you how to inspire others, how to give praise, and even how to ask for help in ways that make you stronger rather than floundering in weakness.
Excellent and helpful information that I am sure you can use. I know I can.
