Madison's Avenue ReviewMadison McKean's life is on a full-speed collision course with disaster. Her father, an advertising agency CEO, is accused of embezzlement and promptly kills himself (or so the police say), which puts his daughter in charge of the agency. As the new CEO, Madison finds herself at odds with many of her employees, and the target of a devious assassin being financed by some very high rollers. And then things get worse.
Author Mike Brogan has weaved a tale of intrigue set in the world of capitalism, corporations, and their criminals. His knowledge and expertise of international business give Madison's Avenue an air of authenticity, and his skills keep the tale from being overbearing and predictable. He also keeps you on your toes until the very last pages and hits you with an ending you can't see coming.
Summer is approaching, and this book is a good way to spend some time while soaking in the sun. It's got all the trappings of a seasonal read: romance, adventure, murder, and a healthy dose of subterfuge. amBITCHous: (def.) A Woman Who: 1. Makes more money 2. has more power 3. gets the recognition she deserves 4. has the determination to go after her dreams and ReviewAfter hearing Debra Condren interviewed on a podcast about how women undermine their own ambitions, I couldn't wait to read her book. I related to her thesis. Sometimes, out of fear of looking like I have a huge ego, I don't even try to take on projects that I know I'm capable of. In other words, I need to learn how to be a little more ambitchous.
That word is Condren's way of describing the double standard facing women. As she puts it, "Ambitious men are go-getters, but ambitious women are bitches." She illustrates her point with Madonna and Carly Fiorina. Media stories about both of them tend to focus on their faults instead of their accomplishments. (Perhaps we could add Paris Hilton to that list.)
Through interviews with other women and her work as a business coach, Condren has developed strategies to help women overcome the fear of being ambitious. She bemoans the fact that many advice books suggest that achieving "balance" requires career sacrifices. Nonsense, she says. Putting your career ambitions first makes you a better person, she argues, because you will be a happier one. "You must regard your deepest career aspirations as unconditionally sacrosanct," she writes.
While the pep talk is inspiring, the real value of this book lies in its concrete tips. She recommends asking for the raise you deserve, claiming credit when it's due, asking for advice from women you respect, and taking regular sabbaticals to make sure you are dreaming big. All of it is great advice that I plan to incorporate into my life.

The Enemies of Excellence: 7 Reasons Why We Sabotage Success ReviewThis book is required reading for any person who finds themselves in a leadership position of any magnitude. The best summary of the books comes from the author on page 88. It reads, "In this book, unlike in many other books of the kind, I have not attempted to define excellence but rather what is sabotaging it." It is a handbook on successful leadership. It is slender, easy to read, and is guaranteed to find fertile soil in any leader's life. In addition, each chapter ends with some helpful tools for application as well as direction to a website which provides even more resources for a person who wishes to implement change after reading this book.
If I had any complaint about the book it would be that it is written a little too simply and at times I find myself surprised that I am reading a book by a professional for professionals. Also, his application and examples are clearly stated, but at times I found myself desiring the author to impart more depth on each point.
Overall this book is exceedingly practical and provides keen insights from the 25 year career of a professional leadership coach in such a way that they are very accessible. I highly recommend this book.

The Power of Nice ReviewIf you bought the book or are looking at this page, you either negotiate often or think your deal-making skills can use a boost.
There are many books out there that can help and I will admit I have not read them all. But The Power of Nice worked for me.
It has some very helpful suggestions that I am actually excited to try. The Power of Nice also has some interesting exercises and stories to break-up the book.
There's no doubt that The Power of Nice was worth the price and the time to read it. I must admit, it started slowly. But the good stuff is in there and (like a tough deal) you need to make yourself stick with it. It will pay off.
If nothing else, I feel like a stronger negotiator having read the book. It has given me more confidence and more ideas on how to be a winner in making deals and working with difficult people.
Believe me, it may not change your life, but it's worth your time to get it and read it. After all, your competition may already have it on their bookcase.The Power of Nice Overview

And to some extent, I even think that's what he wants you to believe. But the essence of it all says something else, for George really does live his life this way. All or nothing. Larger than Life. I don't know how many stories he told that I didn't hang onto every word. The glint in his eye, the hint of a sly smile. George is one of the last great verbal story tellers. And when you do read his book and wonder at the stories yourself, I am reminded of one of George's last ad campaigns. It was a PSA campaign for the New York Blood Bank. The campaign would not have existed if it wasn't for George calling on some of his celebrity friends to offer their time for free.
