Leadership A to Z: A Guide for the Appropriately Ambitious (Jossey-Bass Business & Management Series) ReviewHow to describe a book with this title? It is not a dictionary. It is not a sequential narrative. It is not an anthology of aphorisms or portions of previous publications. It is not a manual. (However, its title does make much more sense than would those of other books such as Chicken Soup for Dummies or Stan Laurel on Management.) What Leadership A to Z provides is "a guide for the appropriately ambitious." O'Toole believes that more can be learned from what effective leaders do (and how they do it) than from their personality and character. What do all effective leaders seem to have in common? What O'Toole characterizes as "appropriate ambition." Note the modifier. All of us have ambitions. (The most effective leaders assuredly do.) Within effective organizations, most of those involved seem to have both personal and organizational ambitions which nourish and sustain each other. At least these ambitions are not mutually-exclusive or even incompatible. Within the most effective organizations, these ambitions are almost (not quite) identical. Moreover, most of the time -- day to day -- most of those involved are leaders of leaders. That is, sharing ambitions which are appropriate to them as well as to their organization, together functioning as what Noel Tichy has described as a well-designed, carefully-maintained "leadership engine."
How should this book be read? One option is to read it sequentially from A to Z. That will work. However, my personal preference (and suggestion) is to re-visit the Contents (pages ix-xi) whenever there is a question to be answered, a problem to be solved, or a new perspective needed. You may find that the answer will reveal itself after you read (let's say) some/all of B, H, J, and T; perhaps reading some/all of A, M, R, and W will suggest a solution; as for gaining a new perspective, I often hop around, in and out, back and forth. Sometimes I locate or formulate one...sometimes I don't.
The book's content is rock-solid. The writing style (vintage O'Toole) has snap, crackle, and pop. The selection of individual items was, of course, arbitrary but the material seems cohesive...perhaps because, directly or indirectly, all of the items help to demonstrate "appropriate ambition" in action. Another way to approach the book is to pretend that you have just entered O'Toole's General Store. Perhaps you have a specific item in mind. Or perhaps you are just "looking around." Fine. Take your time. Check out the merchandise. No obligation to buy anything today. Come back again another time. You are always welcome. Next visit, perhaps, you'll need what you saw last time in Aisle 5. It's nice to know it's there. It's nice to know that some much else is also there, waiting to be of help to you.Leadership A to Z: A Guide for the Appropriately Ambitious (Jossey-Bass Business & Management Series) Overview

Business Intelligence Success Factors: Tools for Aligning Your Business in the Global Economy (Wiley and SAS Business Series) ReviewI highly recommend this book to anyone interested in helping to raise the consciousness within organizations and those who enjoy quietly leading by example. Olivia offers an inspirational approach to business intelligence.
Olivia's book is ideal for a book club. Within a community of readers, people can consciously slow down and reflect on all the wonderful ideas. If people only apply 5 to 10% of what they learn, from reading her book, organizational capacity will still grow immensely. When one finds ways to sow the seeds of knowledge and wisdom over a period of time within any organization, one can anticipate the joy in watching the seeds germinate and grow in the years to come.
Beyond contemplating how the broad spectrum of ideas can enrich organization behavior and optimal decision making, the concepts also offer opportunities for interpersonal reflection. This was an unanticipated consequence for me. By embracing chaos theory, acknowledging that order eventually emerges out of chaos, and appreciating systems thinking, my opportunities for personal growth have expanded.

The last 1/3 of the book is made up of "task force reports" on various niches of the spectrum of presidential rhetoric. Putting Emotional Intelligence To Work: Successful Leadership is More Than IQ ReviewWhile I found the material in the book to be useful, the idea of emotional intelligence is not a new concept. I found it interesting that there are many occassions where the author quotes Carl Rogers and his knowledge of emotional intelligence. I found this interesting because the concept of emotional intelligence was not put forth by Carl Rogers, rather it was put forth by Howard Gardner who believed standardized IQ tests do not fully measure a persons cognitive ability.
Carl Rogers, on the other hand, put forth the concept of client-centered therapy later changing the name to the person centered approach. A key to Rogers approach was giving the client or person unconditional positive regard. Now, I don't disagree with this approach and I think Rogers had a great deal of emotional intelligence. But when I saw the title contained "Emotional Intelligence," I expected the book to mention Gardner or Thorndike or Daniel Goleman who popularized the concept in the mid 90's. In Gardner's theory, he suggests that perhaps the part of the brain that controls emotional intelligence is more developed in some individuals than others. That is the theory behind the various intelligences he put forth.
As I was reading the conversations between the author and Rogers, it is obvious (to me) that Rogers used his person centered approach. Again, creating an atmosphere where the author could say anything and he didn't have to fear rejection from Rogers. This is the unconditional positive regard. This is the concept the author is attempting to get across to business executives. Create an atmosphere where employees feel free to express their ideas without fear of rejection. The idea may not be something that could be used, but if they feel their ideas are valued and will not be laughed at, it will increase their creative input. Rogers was also noted for not giving advice, rather, he would reflect back to the person what they said, let them think about it and come to their own conclusion.
The author also mentions Theory Z in the book, which is a Japanese style of managment. While he praises this management style, what he fails to mention or get across is the cultural difference. Japan is a collectivist culture whereas America is an individualistic culture. For the collectivist, it is a group effort and if one individual succeeds it is the whole group who is recognized. For the individualist, it is an individual effort and if the individual succeeds, the individual is recognized. Considering the cultural differences, would it be possible to successfully implement this management style within an individualistic culture.
Simply put, what it all comes down to is how well does one get along with others? To me, the book is filled with old concepts but repackaged and sold in a different way. Perhaps all we really needed to know we learned in kindergarten?

Leaders Make the Future: Ten New Leadership Skills for an Uncertain World (Bk Business) ReviewBob Johansen is the former President and a current Board member of the Institute for the Future (IFTF) - an independent nonprofit think tank that has produced an annual ten-year forecast for over 40 years. Johansen explains that in a world of increasing volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA), leaders must learn new skills in order to make a better future including:
1) Maker instinct (leaders approach their leadership with commitment of a job and energy of a passionate hobby)
2) Clarity (leaders being clear about what they are making but flexible about how it gets made)
3) Dilemma Flipping (turning problems that can't be solved into opportunities)
4) Immersive Learning (learning by doing)
5) Bio-empathy (understand, respect and learn from nature)
6) Constructive depolarization (calming tense situations and bringing people from divergent cultures towards constructive engagement)
7) Quiet transparency (ability to be open and authentic about what matters to you without self-promotion)
8) Rapid Prototyping (ability to create early versions of innovations)
9) Smart mob organizing (creating, engaging and nurturing social networks)
10)Commons creating (stimulate, grow and nurture shared assets that can benefit other players)
While the preface and introduction had me looking forward to reading on, I found getting through the book challenging. The author does an effective job in explaining the "what" and the "why" but not the "how." He uses a patch work of lightly connected examples throughout the book...rather than bringing color to the leadership skill, the examples often tended to be a distraction.
Johansen concludes with a solid recap - questions you may ask yourself in evaluating your level of competence for the new leadership skills along with a self-assessment rating system. Unfortunately, getting from the introduction to chapter 10 takes some doing.

Micromessaging: Why Great Leadership is Beyond Words ReviewI bought this book to help me understand business or the way people interact in a business setting. As a middle manager of a small business that is now part of a big business (aka recently acquired), I have been struggling with change in management, management style and culture. What this book is helping me understand is the messages that come from people in authority and how it impacts the rank and file; and likewise how my own emotions, thoughts and feelings impact the people who report too me.
While I have not yet finished the book, it does have me hooked and thirsting for more. As a technologist it also helps bridge the communication gap between technology and business. Being exposed to this subject matter has already opened my eyes to the fact that management and leadership are two very seperate skills. I now understand the power of effective leadership and has given me new thought in developing my career.Micromessaging: Why Great Leadership is Beyond Words Overview

Hundred Percenters: Challenge Your Employees to Give It Their All, and They'll Give You Even More ReviewThis is my first book review, but I believe that "Hundred Percenters" provides managers and leadership with such powerful--and timely--information that it was worth taking my time to submit a review.
CIO Insight Magazine named this book a "Must Read for Fall." And they were right on. I've never see a leadership book filled with so many brilliant discoveries about leadership.
You'll learn about the Stages of Accountability, and how to manage people in Denial, Blame, Excuses or Anxiety. There's an entire chapter on the science of goal setting, and creating the kind of goals that have inspired the world's greatest performers to achieve such extraordinary results. SMART Goals can seem pretty DUMB after you read the research in the book. And I've seen it work: If you follow Murphy's goal-setting approach, your employees will blow you away with their achievements.
You'll learn what motivates and demotivates every personality type in your company. The "Shoves & Tugs" conversation they describe to motivate people is pure genius. Learning about Talented Terrors was a real eye-opener (those people with brilliant skills but a terrible attitude). I can now see their destructive impact and I'm a lot more comfortable having a specific script to manage them. I was blown away by the science of conducting Employee Engagement Surveys, and why, for example, you should never use a 5 point scale for your surveys. Or why you should never ask employees if they're satisfied.
Literally every chapter is filled with research and specific techniques that will blow you away. This is a revolutionary book that will forever change how you think about leadership.

The Enemies of Excellence: 7 Reasons Why We Sabotage Success ReviewThis book is required reading for any person who finds themselves in a leadership position of any magnitude. The best summary of the books comes from the author on page 88. It reads, "In this book, unlike in many other books of the kind, I have not attempted to define excellence but rather what is sabotaging it." It is a handbook on successful leadership. It is slender, easy to read, and is guaranteed to find fertile soil in any leader's life. In addition, each chapter ends with some helpful tools for application as well as direction to a website which provides even more resources for a person who wishes to implement change after reading this book.
If I had any complaint about the book it would be that it is written a little too simply and at times I find myself surprised that I am reading a book by a professional for professionals. Also, his application and examples are clearly stated, but at times I found myself desiring the author to impart more depth on each point.
Overall this book is exceedingly practical and provides keen insights from the 25 year career of a professional leadership coach in such a way that they are very accessible. I highly recommend this book.

When the Headline Is You: An Insider's Guide to Handling the Media (J-B International Association of Business Communicators) ReviewI just finished the book, and wanted to convey my enthusiasm for this outstanding tool for the professional communicator (or for those who aspire to become so). The book presents the material in a clear, structured manner that allows one to return to it on a regular basis, as needed. While it won't replace the value of face-to-face training by Jeff Ansell himself (no book could replace active participatory media training), it does provide a consistent and effective framework to filter and craft messages. I think the real originality of the approach (and in the book) lies in the concept of the Value Compass. It is clearly the first step in rethinking corporate communications in a wholly different way, closer to how humans need to communicate with one another. Ultimately, it could serve to partially humanize industries and companies that deal in controversial products or services. A must read! When the Headline Is You: An Insider's Guide to Handling the Media (J-B International Association of Business Communicators) Overview

Motivate Like a CEO: Communicate Your Strategic Vision and Inspire People to Act ReviewI figured since I am a CEO, I should figure out how to motivate like a CEO so I read the book called, "Motivate Like A CEO Communicate Your Strategic Vision and Inspire People to Act!" by Suzanne Bates.
The first chapter resonated a lot with me. The gist of the message is summarized by one of the quotes, "Purpose is necessary, critical to a happy, healthy, and successful life". The message is that purpose is essential for motivation. The challenge is that people are motivated by different things. People work for a pay cheque but they live for a purpose. The first step in leading an organization is to be in touch with your own purpose.
The second chapter talks about the eight principles of motivating others through communication. In her previous book, Bates wrote "Speaking Like a CEO" and much of her topic was on communications. This book further re-emphasizes that with eight principles which include:
1) Begins with you -- your purpose and passion.
2) Communicate a clear powerful mission.
3) Learn what motivates people.
4) Make personal connections with others.
5) Make the conversation about them (like Stephen Covey's first law -- Seek first to understand).
6) Praise recognize and reward.
7) Walk the talk.
8) Empower people (I am big on this one. I don't believe any organization is scaleable unless people are empowered to do the right thing). Any leader is very limited if they expect to control and do everything themselves.
The book has exercises on how to discover your purpose; how to connect with people to purpose; link the what with the why, etc.
The book absolutely needs to be written. It is clear that good leaders need to inspire people and the book gives a lot of the reasons why they need to be inspired and some examples on how some people were inspired. I think in some cases it is harder to put into action some of the ideas in real-life.
I found the book to be an easy read and very well laid out. I like the summaries at the end of the chapters and you could read just the insert boxes to understand the book.
It is a good, well written book for any leader.

Charming Your Way To the Top: Hollywood's Premier P.R. Executive Shows You How to Get Ahead ReviewIn his entertaining and informative book, CHARMING YOUR WAY TO THE TOP, Michael Levine defines charm as "the act of making the other person believe you care" . . . he then goes on to present countless examples of how this can be done in a wide variety of situations.
Levine, who heads his own public relations firm, also mentions names of people who have and haven't used charm in their careers . . . my only regret is that he hadn't mentioned both
Cary Grant and Adolph Hitler quite so much and instead had cited his actual clients more.
Yet that said, I still liked CHARMING and got much out of it . . . you will, too . . . for example, here were just a few of the ideas that caught my attention:
The most obvious way to ingratiate yourself to other people is to demonstrate interest in them. Women often complain that first dates are awful because the men they date rarely want to talk about anything but themselves. Listening as well as talking is a severely under-practiced skill and one that needs to be cultivated and used intelligently. It is simple and basic, but it is also true--we want people to listen to us.
Light conversation is a skill and an art--it requires a little thought, and quick reactions. But it is not difficult and it is not dangerous. Asking people how their day is going is a simple and quick way to start a conversation, and-especially-to demonstrate that you are interested in them, in their feelings and problems, at least on a very limited basis. I'm not talking about the robotic "have-a-nice-day" kind of communication that is clearly rehearsed and insincere.
In this case, the easiest thing at the dry cleaner, the supermarket, the restaurant, or the bookstore is simply to look the person behind the counter in the eye, smile, and ask, "How's your day going?"
Also, using that technique [using someone's name] when leaving voice mail or telephone answering machine messages is a very telling, important point. Yes, identify yourself, but make sure you speak directly to the person for whom you're leaving the message, and use his name. It shows that even during unguarded moments you are thinking of someone other than yourself.Charming Your Way To the Top: Hollywood's Premier P.R. Executive Shows You How to Get Ahead Overview

How to Write and Give a Speech: A Practical Guide for Executives, Pr People, Managers, Fund-Raisers, Politicians, Educators and Anyone Who Has to Ma ReviewThe Washington Post praised this as a "how-to classic" and I would agree with them. It's well-organized and filled with top-quality professional advice. It's also very 'readable' - which sets it apart from so many public speaking texts.

The Last Word on Power: Executive Re-Invention for Leaders Who Must Make The Impossible Happen ReviewI have never done an LGAT like est or Landmark Forum, though I have read some of their concepts and found them interesting. There was too much other, negative material to entice me into those programs. This book, however, puts forth what I understand to be the core teachings of those organizations, and I have found them powerful, challenging, exciting beyond belief. I disagree with the reviewer who thinks that you have to have had est training or the like to understand this book. It is written clearly, Ms. Goss defines all her jargon concisely, and she gets right to the heart of the matter of transformation (as opposed to change - a great distinction.) It is the best "self-help" book I have ever read and I highly recommend it far beyond the boundaries of business re-invention. As an artist, I found her concepts liberating, and as a person I truly do feel that I am in the process of transforming myself. And on top of all that, it coasts less than a tenth of the Landmark Forum Weekend seminar! My only complaint is that the book doesn't list discussion groups based around the information contained inside. Perhaps I'll have to go to an est or Forum site to have conversations about it...but I can't say enough about it.The Last Word on Power: Executive Re-Invention for Leaders Who Must Make The Impossible Happen Overview

Perks and Parachutes: Negotiating Your Best Possible Employment Deal, from Salary and Bonus to Benefits and Protection ReviewThis is a good clear overall glimpse of the battleground of executive compensation strategies and guidlines. For most executives looking for some strategies, this will be helpful reading. For the CEO/Pres candidate or company looking to construct an complex package this helps but falls slightly short of being able to put the most cutting edge deal together. I recommend this book. It seems to be the best all around one available. It must, however, be augmented with executive compensation trend reports from consulting groups. Required for the library of anyone dealing daily within the business of HR or recruiting. A must for the executive candidate looking to negotiate his own package.Perks and Parachutes: Negotiating Your Best Possible Employment Deal, from Salary and Bonus to Benefits and Protection Overview
