Accelerating out of the Great Recession: How to Win in a Slow-Growth Economy ReviewWhile I am usually rather sceptical about Consultants who are explaining the world - this book truly does add crystal clear insights. It not only puts the financial and economic crisis into a historic perspective, it also seperates root causes from secondary fallouts, it distinguishes temporary symptoms from longlasting changes.
All very readable and easy to digest, rather entertaining - particularly the elaborate company case studies and analogies from last century - and their (non-)relevance to the current situation. I found the authors' analysis and outlook to be extremely helpful in order to define what the "new normal" we all will have to adjust to is going to look like. It was insightful and read like a novel, despite covering large amounts of technical and financial data. Larry covers his beginning days of doing deals at Cravath and later at Wachtell, engineering some of the most novel dealmaking the world has ever seen in the process. Larry's sharp mind and hard work, along with a handful of other New York lawyers and bankers in the 1980s, helped transform the market into what it is today. Recommended read for any M&A lawyer or banker or for someone aspiring to be such.Tombstones: A Lawyer's Tales from the Takeover Decades Overview

Poisoning the Press: Richard Nixon, Jack Anderson, and the Rise of Washington's Scandal Culture ReviewThis detailed portrait of one of the longest and ugliest feuds in Washington and its impact on today's politics and media is a page-turner. Feldstein's book is a rematch of sorts featuring two old warriors, and Nixon still comes out looking the worst. But Jack Anderson takes a pretty good beating, too. I thought I knew Anderson's story - and Nixon's. Not entirely, it turns out. "Poisoning the Press" shows a side of Anderson I hadn't seen in the late muckraker's own books. And as far as Nixon goes, Feldstein offers even more reasons to view Nixon as a deeply flawed man brought down by his own moral failings. The conversations that went on in the Oval Office - many are detailed for the first time by the author via the infamous tapes - are chilling because of the setting and the players. (Does anyone still argue that Nixon didn't know what was going on with Watergate and other criminal activities within the White House?) Anderson was never a saint, but I was surprised that he was corruptible, at least in the journalistic sense. The 10 Laws of Enduring Success ReviewAs an instructor, I am always asked by students and peers "what are you reading?" and "Why do you like it?" Most of the books I read for professional purposes are around decision making, emotional intelligence, and on commodities, such a crude oil or cocoa. It's great to read a book that can benefit a wide array of people from diverse backgrounds - white or blue collar. This is such a book and I heartily recommend it.
Despite what you may think, Bartiromo is from a very humble, working-class background, having been raised in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. She had a vision for what she wanted, followed her heart, and made it happen with a lot of love and support from her parents Josephine and Vincent, and from her sister who she is very close with.
With Catherine Whitney, Bartiromo has written a compelling case for not feeling sorry for yourself and taking control of where you want to be in your life. The book is full of candor not normally associated with someone who you'd consider "image-conscious."
I wrote an article about Bartiromo and 10 Laws at the Huffington Post. Below are the first three paragraphs:
A good teacher will help aggregate information and condense it for you in an organized manner. A great teacher will passionately help you discover the ability you have inside yourself and help you culture that pearl, so that your feelings and intellect become your allies.
Such is the approach Maria Bartiromo has taken in her new book, 10 Laws of Enduring Success, written with Catherine Whitney. The book details the events that Bartiromo had to overcome and the manner in which she had to persist from her days as a young girl in Brooklyn, to becoming the woman the world knows her as today.
The result is an inspiring and highly motivational book that is perfectly timed for today's business environment. It doesn't pander to her constituents on Wall St. either: it's equally motivating to white and blue collars - and especially to women. While reading it, I kept thinking how this book reminded me of 2 other inspiring reads I recommend to my students: Napolean Hill's "Think and Grow Rich" and Stephen Covey's "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People."
