Asia's Banking CEOs: The Future of Finance in Asia ReviewThis is an important and timely book. In writing about the leaders at Asia's largest and most important financial institutions, Peter Hoflich has chronicled not only the current state of banking in Asia, but also how these institutions survived the Asian financial crisis and where they are going, in bringing banking services to the some of the world's largest emerging consumer markets.
As US and UK banks are crumbling around us, the tales that the CEOs in this book have lived to tell are especially important. Japan's Shinsei emerged from the former Long-Term Credit Bank after a private equity buyout; Thai banks implemented painful credit controls; Indonesian banks are only now recovering, after a round of mergers.
The range of institutions and personalities covered in this book is breathtaking. Banks include China's ICBC which raised $22 billion in its IPO to India's HDFC that is developing products for all categories of consumers, from the super wealthy to the 700 million unbanked people in the country. Internet-only banks, foreign banks jostling for position among the local domestic giants, family owned and nationalized banks are also featured. One thing's for sure -- these men are women are determining the direction of economies in Asia through the banking services they are developing. They discuss their travails and triumphs in this book.
Hoflich's coverage of Japanese and Korean financial institutions is particularly strong. Certain markets, like Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam, are, unfortunately, not covered. But his fluency on issues, easy writing style and wit makes this book an enjoyable read. A must for anyone interested in banking.Asia's Banking CEOs: The Future of Finance in Asia Overview

Ambassador from Wall Street: The Story of Thomas W. Lamont, J.P. Morgan's Chief Executive ReviewThe Ambassador From Wall Street is a fasciating tale of one of the great financial leaders of the 20th Century. As a retired New York banker who started work in 1950 and who held some quite responsible positions, I found the book contained messages for bankers that are as true today as they were in the life of Mr. Lamont, particularly on how to avoid undue risk and how to manage the inevitable messes when they occur. The book seems to have been well researched by the arthor, a Grandson of the subject, and takes us through the many economic and financial developments of the first half of the twentieth century. Its scope allows the reader to have a broad view of the financial world, a useful benefit in this age of globalization. I particularly recommend the book to young students of finance. The lessons learned will enhance their careers.Ambassador from Wall Street: The Story of Thomas W. Lamont, J.P. Morgan's Chief Executive Overview

Essentials of the Dodd-Frank Act (Essentials Series) ReviewThat is one heck of a challenging piece of legislation, but thanks to this book, I finally get it. As a senior executive, I love Wiley's Essentials series and this one was no exception. Judging from some other reviews, it is clear that they are not senior-level professionals, and so they were obviously disappointed by this book. The book is written for someone looking for a high-level big-picture perspective, not the nitty-gritty minutiae/details. In fact the nitty-gritty details are yet to be hashed out by the government, and so the only way to get all that once it is hashed out would be to stay on top on the news. The book makes that sufficiently clear, and so it is good that I was able to set aside any such expectation before I started reading. Between the book and its recommended newsletter I give this 5 stars (on their own each would be 4 stars)Essentials of the Dodd-Frank Act (Essentials Series) Overview

Managing to the New Regulatory Reality: Doing Business Under the Dodd-Frank Act (Wiley Finance) ReviewI thoroughly enjoyed Greg Wilson's latest work, "Managing to the New Regulatory Reality - Doing Business under the Dodd Frank Act". This is an enlightening account of the forces contributing to the 2008 financial collapse combined with a straightforward summary of the process behind the government's colossal legislative response to prevent another such tragedy. Wilson provides a clear summary of the new rules of the game, and outlines the path for managing these new realities. And he does so in plain English!
My perspective on the book is that of a senior corporate executive looking to understand this new legion of rules and how it relates to my role and responsibilities. Sarbanes - Oxley forced executives to learn about and comply with the minutia of that law. Anyone who trivialized compliance with SOX certainly got a nasty surprise. Once again learning and accommodation redux is upon us in the form of Dodd - Frank. Better inform yourself of how this works and what it means to you - it's not going away.
I related to Wilson's descriptions of the act's impact on many everyday activities having to do with credit rating agencies, consumer protection laws, board compensation committees, shareholder voices on executive pay and general shareholder protections. You will quickly see enforcement of Dodd - Frank can't be delegated to the CFO or your external auditors. Ignorance of Dodd - Frank's requirements will be no excuse for corporate non - compliance.
Senior executives should consider Wilson's book a critical part of their continuing education. It's an excellent synopsis of serious stuff.
