Science Lessons: What the Business of Biotech Taught Me About Management ReviewGordon Binder's Science Lessons demonstrates the efficacy of creating an atmosphere of autonomy and employee ownership in the corporate structure. Mr Binders straightforward corporate philosophy shines in its simplicity and effectuality.
To the layman, 'science" conotates cold, calculating numbers, control groups and petri dishes. Mr Binder brings warmth and humanity to the scientific ascent at Amgen and leaves an indellible impression on the reader.
Science Lessons is a blueprint for the creation of a mission statement for anyone in business. The author has a unique and refreshing approach to management rooted in positive reinforcement and a reverence for autonomy. In a corporate age of maddening bureacracy, Science Lessons is a mandatory read for anyone who manages people.
A utilitarian would marvel at Mr Binder's results; but, to the contrary, its the means by which he accomplished things that astounds. Science Lessons is refreshing, invigorating and ulimately pragmatic for all readers. Five stars all the way!Science Lessons: What the Business of Biotech Taught Me About Management Overview

Power Grab: How Obama's Green Policies Will Steal Your Freedom and Bankrupt America ReviewCharlton Heston starred in the 1973 movie "Soylent Green". The year is 2022, and we are all poor and without power, both electrical and political. Christopher Horner's book begins by looking ahead to the year 2015 and painting an eerily similar picture of an impoverished existence. The real irony here is that the sad future is created, not by man's mismanagement of earth's resources, but by one man's presidential withholding of those sources of power from society.
As stated in the book, environmentalism seeks to use the state to create scarcity as a means to exert their will. Indeed, the author contends the policies and people being instituted into our nation's government are about establishing and holding power over our lives, our very future, and that of our children. Mr. Hornor argues that "the Power Grab is to grab your power, your wealth, economic liberties and personal freedoms." A technique to attempt to do this is akin to "yelling eco-crisis in a crowded recession."
The author adds, perhaps a bit hopefully, that "...only the left are panicking as the voters head for the exit."
This book is rather heavy and yes, a bit apocalyptic but worth burning the midnight oil to read. Yet, contrary to Charlton Heston's character trapped in a drab future he cannot alter, "Power Grab" encourages the reader to grab the constitutional power reins and steer your future and that of your children's back on the course of freedom.

The Knowledge Executive: 2 ReviewThis book was a catalyst in changing my own focus from that of reforming the classified intelligence community, to that of creating a "virtual intelligence community" that served as an on-going educational program for government and business leaders. "If there was ever a moment in history when a comprehensive strategic view was needed, not just by a few leaders in high (which is to say visible) office but by a large number of executives and other generalists in and out of government, this is certainly it. Meeting that need is what should be higher about higher education."The Knowledge Executive: 2 Overview

The Executive Brain: Frontal Lobes and the Civilized Mind ReviewMost of us wander through our days without any conscious thought about the very organ that's directing our routine. But anyone who reads Dr. Goldberg's compelling, lively account of the brain's frontal lobes will come away with a newfound appreciation for their own gray matter. As Goldberg tells it, not only do the frontal lobes help us prioritize tasks and give us our awareness of ourselves and others, they also play a crucial role in creativity and talent, and are the reason they're as civilized as we are. (Next time I see someone toss their trash on the street, I'll think, Weak Frontal Lobes!) Although the book was written with both a general and a scientifically adept readership in mind, it's never so technical that the layperson can't follow the discussion. I found this book stimulating, witty, and illuminating. The Executive Brain: Frontal Lobes and the Civilized Mind Overview

Censoring Science: Dr. James Hansen and the Truth of Global Warming ReviewMichael Crichton's psuedo-scientific novel touted that those who were warning the world about the dangers of climate change were deliberately trying to instill fear for their own benefit. What was happening was exactly the opposite. The state of fear that was actually being created was being done so in order to censor the truth about global warming and delay any serious action on it. This delay has put more global warming in the pipe and contributed to loss of life of humans, and to actual extinctions of other species, while threatening many others.
Mark Bowen aptly tells the story of the various forms of intimidation and outright censorship and the courageous employees at NASA who "went through a human struggle to tell the truth in the face of very real dangers". (P.309)
And then of course, was the "hero" of the book--a scientist of exceptional brilliance, integrity, decency and courage -Dr. James Hansen. His grasp of the scope of climate change, his devotion to scientific integrity, his unwillingness to respond in kind to attacks made on him, and his courage in speaking out are truly impressive. It is not easy for a scientist who would much rather be working quietly in his laboratory to speak out on public policy. But as Hansen himself wrote "Success in science depends on objective skepticism. Caution, if not reticence, has its merits. However, in a case such as ice sheet instability and sea level rise, there is a danger in excessive caution. We may rue reticence, if it serves to lock in future disasters..." (Pp287-288).
What the book reveals of James Hansen's character and his life is very engaging. One of my favorite anecdotes was at a NASA headquarters meeting during which Dr. Hansen worked on testimony he would later give to the Senate. The NASA official conducting the meeting stated that no respectable scientist would make the statement that the present warming could be identified with the greenhouse effect. Hansen "looked up from his writing and said 'I don't know if he's respectable or not, but I know someone who is just about to make that statement'". (p.223).
This book is a statement about integrity vs opportunism in the face of the greatest looming crisis ever to face humankind and our planet.

Censoring Science: Inside the Political Attack on Dr. James Hansen and the Truth of Global Warming ReviewI struggle trying to decide what to write about this book. On the one hand, large portions of it are extremely tedious to get through and seem like overkill. On the other hand, a few parts are some of the best writing on the global warming issue I have read recently. The book begins with a section that covers about the first half, which is basically an almost blow-by-blow accounting of all sorts of censorship, editing, distortion, and intimidation by political appointees in NASA. I suspect many people will give up on this book before finishing this part. I think it is too long and detailed. Perhaps more summary with a few well-placed examples would have sufficed. Around the middle of the book, the tone changes greatly, and there is much more coverage of Hansen's actual work through the years and what it showed about global warming. In this section Hansen is depicted as a careful scientist who basically got it right 30 years ago and has been getting better since. This section contains some of the best descriptions of how real-world data and modeling fit the picture, and why global warming deniers are way off base. Finally, towards the end of the book emphasis shifts to Hansen's more recent advocacy in favor of doing something, and (the author's)dire predictions for what's in store if we don't. Curiously, the descriptions of how much Hansen has been doing found at the end of the book seem a little out of synch with the claims of censorship and muzzling found at the beginning of the book.
In the second half of the book, Bowen seems to rely on the work of Journalist Ross Gelbspan, who shares an interest in how political forces have tried to distort or derail the science of global warming, and some of the material from his own previous book on the study of ice.
I think the following extremely important points can be gleaned from the book:
1) Hansen is a very meticulous scientist who shys away from political involvement or spectacular claims in public, in spite of how is he generally characterized by those hoping to smear him.
2) Hansen is perhaps the most important global warming researcher in the US, and has an incredible 30+ year record of solid work and correct predictions or views on things.
3) We have essentially lost many years of attacking the problem of global warming by allowing short-term corporate interests to dictate a policy that puts profit above long-term stability of the environment.
4) There is overwhelming and basically unassailable evidence of what is going on, and a strong basis for solid predictions of what could happen.
I will conclude by suggesting this book, while being very important in some aspects could have been much better in many ways. It can't decide if it's a biography on Dr. Hansen, an investigative report on Bush administration attempts to stymie science, or a scientific wake-up call on global warming. I give it three stars because it's so hard to get through the first half. However, I do suggest that anyone interested in this topic give it a try.Censoring Science: Inside the Political Attack on Dr. James Hansen and the Truth of Global Warming Overview

The Making of Environmental Law ReviewHere, Richard J. Lazarus has delivered a very unique look at the history of environmental law from an evolutionary or holistic perspective. This book will be a valuable resource for anyone looking for an in-depth look at environmental law as a field, but without the need for tedious policy descriptions or scientific minutiae. Lazarus covers the social and political history of environmental thought and how those phenomena shaped American environmental law as we know it. Lazarus also offers rewarding coverage of the challenges faced by concerned lawmakers in a legal system that resists long-term regulatory schemes, redistributions of costs and benefits, and scientific uncertainty. He also shows how environmental law needs to remain both heavily detailed and flexibly dynamic as the natural world and knowledge about it change over time.
This holistic approach to the law is fascinating and highly insightful, but just watch out for Part III in which Lazarus adds too much unnecessary supporting material on technical specifications (Chapter 8); and derails his unique legal history with unenlightening condemnations of American consumerism and high-speed lifestyles, complete with fairly bizarre complaints about sped-up baseball games, pre-faded jeans, and internet dating services. The tail end of the book is also stretched out with many repeated points and brief introductions of post-modern concepts like "convergence" that Lazarus fails to completely explore. But overall, despite the problematic third part of the book, Lazarus has delivered a unique summary and insightful overview of a complex topic that will be of use to both concerned citizens and researchers in a variety of disciplines.
