Obamanomics: How Barack Obama Is Bankrupting You and Enriching His Wall Street Friends, Corporate Lobbyists, and Union Bosses Review"Obamanomics" is the title of two books on the economic platform of the Obama administration. Apparently the phrase has a nice catch to publishers. But in the hands of Timothy Carney, author of this book, "Obamanomics" is shorthand for corporatism; the use of big government regulations to support corporate profits. This, of course, is not how most commentators see the new administration. They accept the rhetoric that this administration is promoting change by putting the interests of ordinary citizens ahead of corporate lobbyists. As this important book reveals, nothing could be further from the truth.
During his campaign for president, Obama carefully crafted a message of change. A repeated theme of the campaign was that big business had too much power in the Bush administration and his own administration would strictly regulate lobbyists and their corporate sponsors. Throughout the election, the Obama campaign successfully portrayed John McCain as a representative of "Big Business" while suggesting that Obama was funded by donations from average Americans. This myth is still believed by many Americans today. Throughout the book, however, Carney shows how fundamentally wrong this conception is. Obama received far more money from big pharmaceutical companies, like Pfizer, from big oil, like Exxon Mobil, from GE and Goldman Sachs, than McCain. Indeed, he received more than any other candidate for President in history. Carney carefully details the money spent on Obama industry by industry and in subsequent chapters describes just what all this money bought.
In general, popular mythology notwithstanding, large corporations routinely benefit from government regulation. Carney details several ways this can happen. Government contracts and direct subsidies are of course enormously profitable, but other effects of regulation are less obvious. One of the least obvious ways is that regulatory costs protect large corporations from competition. Consider for example the Waxman-Markey climate change bill. This bill proposes to limit greenhouse gas emissions by giving away carbon credits to industry and then letting markets decide how to price and trade those credits. Conveniently enough, the bill will simply give away credits worth 51 billion dollars to established corporations like GE, Exxon, and Chevron. But new businesses, hoping to compete with these giants, will have to purchase the credits. Barriers to entry are essential to a monopoly and markets don't readily provide these. But governments do, and so it is no wonder that as the size of the federal government has expanded, so too has the influence of corporate lobbyists who stand the most to gain under the policies of the Obama adminstration.
One of the key points in the book is that none of this has anything to do with Obama's intentions. Obama may well believe his own rhetoric. He may think (or hope) that he is representing the little guy against the power of professional lobbyists, but the simple facts are that when government largess is offered out, those with the most resources will be the first to collect. An example of how this logic plays out is Obama's health care initiative. Despite his rhetoric against pharmaceuticals and HMOs, Obama received a lot of money from this industry, far more than his opponent. During the campaign, he offered 4 solutions to the health care crisis: a "public option" (meaning a government run health insurance to "compete" with private care), opposing individual mandates (ie., requiring an individual to buy health care), subsidizing insurance, and preserving a tax subsidy on employer sponsored (but not privately purchased) health care. Now, the first two solutions are not favorable to industry and the last two are. And the current bill ... favors industry and will include an individual mandate. The first two campaign suggestions are off the table. Again, big business wins and the tax payer is left footing the bill. To paraphrase Gore Vidal, this is truly socialism for the rich and capitalism (with heavy taxes) for everyone else.
Carney examines every one of Obama's economic initiatives and finds the same pattern. Rhetorical claims to be opposing big insurance, big tobacco, big auto, etc, and signing or promoting legislation that will ultimately benefit the bottom line of these very corporations who often write the legislation! Carney does correctly note that none of this started with Obama. Indeed, George W. Bush also worked to favor his corporate cronies, though to nothing like this degree. But when it comes to what to do about this problem, Carney offers few solutions. He supports Ron Paul's campaign to audit the Federal Reserve (it would be nice to know how much money was created out of thin air to buy AIG and save Goldman Sachs.) But ultimately we need to recognize that the problem lies in government itself. Governmental regulation inherently favors the powerful and they themselves know this. Indeed, corporations have used governmental regulation to promote their agenda for the better part of a century. Anyone familiar with Gabriel Kolko's classic The Triumph of Conservatism knows that from the progressive era on big business has used government to protect itself from competition. What we need then, is to recognize the difference between rhetoric and reality when it comes to political proposals. That is not an easy task when dealing with someone as charismatic as President Obama. But reading this book is a good start.Obamanomics: How Barack Obama Is Bankrupting You and Enriching His Wall Street Friends, Corporate Lobbyists, and Union Bosses Overview

In the Shadow of the Oval Office: Profiles of the National Security Advisers and the Presidents They Served--From JFK to George W. Bush ReviewIn the Shadow of the Oval Office is an impressive summary of the duties, inner-workings, and conflicts inherit in the role of National Security Adivsor. The authors, Ivo Daalder and I.m Destler write with a brillant command of the subject matter and without political agenda. The narrative is remarkably consistent in style; one would think there was a single author, not two.
What impressed, and somewhat frightened, this reviewer is how much the effectiveness, or lack there of, the National Security Advisor is based upon personality of the NSA and the presonality of the President he or she serves. If there is a single thesis in this book, it would be that the country is well-served when there is good match between NSA and the President, and the country, if not the world, is poorly served if there is poor match.
But Daadler and Destler are primarily not interested in advancing an academic theory, rather they are more interested in just telling the story correctly. The reader sees how national policies are developed in the context of management styles and inter-personal dynamics involved as well as the relevant historical perspective.
In short, In the Shadow of the Oval Office is a triumphant combination of polictical analysis, historical re-telling, and character study. In the Shadow of the Oval Office: Profiles of the National Security Advisers and the Presidents They Served--From JFK to George W. Bush Overview

The Violence of Peace: America's Wars in the Age of Obama ReviewInitially, I was not inclined to purchase this book. Its subtitle suggested a range of focus far too narrow ("America's Wars in the Age of Obama"). And since the author is a liberal Ivy League law school professor (yes, I know that description is redundant in the extreme), I figured this would be another paean to "hope and change" or a polemical indictment of Bush's war policies. But I was wrong.
First, the scope of the book is far greater than Obama's conduct of the three ongoing American conflicts: the Iraq War, the Afghanistan War, and the War on Terror. Yes, Professor Carter does dissect the President's military policies but he does so in the broader context of U.S. foreign policy, drawing upon useful historical parallels and analyzing the views of many of the right's best thinkers (e.g., Judge Posner) as well as those from the left (Jean Bethke Elshtain).
Second, considering the author's own liberal predilections, the book is quite balanced and unfailingly analytical. Carter defends his thesis--that the similarities between Bush and Obama war policies are far greater than the differences (though the subtle differences are important)--convincingly. Further, he bends over backwards to give the Bush Administration a fair hearing. Indeed, I thought he was too kind in his willingness to give Bush the benefit of the doubt on his administration's faith in the intelligence on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction. But, as he adroitly notes, even if Saddam had possessed WMDs, that, standing alone, was not justification for the invasion since there was no indication that Iraq intended to use whatever weapons it did possess against us or our allies.
Carter rightly notes, without being cynical, that Obama's aggressive use of predator drones and prisoner renditions is motivated primarily by his realization that the terrorist threats are real and that, above all else, Obama wants to be reelected in 2012. I, think, however, that he dwells a bit too much on Obama's reference to the concept of a "just war" in his Nobel peace prize acceptance speech. This was little more than a rhetorical flourish on the President's part, though I must admit that Carter's discussion of the origins of the "just war" concept was interesting.
I disagree with Carter, however, in his efforts to characterize the Afghan War as a "preventive" or "preemptive" conflict, rather than a war of self-defense (a "war of necessity," as described by both Bush and Obama). He believes the self-defense rationale is inappropriate because, at the time we invaded Afghanistan, al-Qaeda was not engaging in any actual attacks against America. While that may be technically true, we did not know whether another attack was imminent. Moreover, most people will not embrace a definition of self-defense that is limited only to those situations where your adversary continuously, without hiatus, attacks you. The fact that your adversary lacks the resources (e.g., runs out of ammunition periodically) to fire at you unceasingly does not mean that he is only a "weekend warrior," especially when that enemy has a history of attacking your people and property throughout the world. In fairness, Carter isn't suggesting that preventive or preemptive wars are inherently wrong; nevertheless, his concept of national self-defense is far too restrictive.
As you can see, Professor Carter made me think. And you can't ask much more from a book. In an age when the Current Affairs shelves at the local bookstore seem filled mostly with vapid polemics, it was a pleasant surprise to stumble upon a thoughtful examination of the military challenges we face. Highly recommended. The Violence of Peace: America's Wars in the Age of Obama Overview

The Manchurian President: Barack Obama's Ties to Communists, Socialists and Other Anti-American Extremists ReviewThe first few chapters are poignant, yet slow moving. The book really takes off in Chapter 4, when it begins to discuss in detail Obama's adoption of Saul Alinsky-type tactics, and his outright affiliation to socialist and communist PAC's and communal organizing non-profits. After reading, "The Manchurian President", you may still wonder how America could have possibly elected BHO, but you won't wonder why he acts like a marxist through his public policy. The truth is, he's been around marxism and socialism his entire life, and his policy reflects this stunning truth. The Manchurian President: Barack Obama's Ties to Communists, Socialists and Other Anti-American Extremists Overview

Conduct Unbecoming: How Barack Obama is Destroying The Military and Endangering Our Security ReviewWhile little in this book will be a surprise to those who have been tuned in to the news over the past three years, Conduct Unbecoming will certainly act as the helpful condensed version that will remind people of stories long forgotten by the Jurassic Press. Everything from seemingly innocent statements of Bill Ayers being "a professor who was just a guy in my neighborhood" and that Obama had not heard those crazy things from Reverend Wright. Patterson takes a thorough and very in depth look at both the campaign and the administration to date not just with the authority of an avid news watcher and researcher, but as someone who has worked in the White House. Buzz carried the nuclear football for President Clinton and saw firsthand the behind the scenes dealings of the inner circles of the White House and how these times were then reported in the news cycles. While some liberals will try to discredit this book or shrug it off because of a dislike of the title or a negative insinuation, the sources listed will lend the credibility to fact over feeling. However, for the open minded liberal or conservative, this book will be a great refresher read and the sources will verify that Patterson once again has provided insight that he and very few others are capable of providing.
One great addition to this book is a lengthy explanation that the majority of the Jurassic Press are far too afraid to cover, in fear of being labeled Islamophobic, racist or otherwise intolerant. In an appendix, Patterson provides a very thorough timeline of "The Long War", listing events that you are sure to remember and a great many more that will have slipped your mind due to time passed. This listing provides to the other part of Patterson's extensive background: National Security. As a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, his experience in the Armed Forces included combat operations in Grenada, Somalia, Rwanda, Haiti and Bosnia. Through his experiences over twenty plus years of serving as an officer, he saw and lived the life of an expert of what threats are, both large and small. If you are a person who supports the military but may not understand the operations and what "security" means through those eyes, this is the book to rely on to explain things in a simple yet thorough manner that will have you feeling educated enough to begin teaching your well intentioned but misguided liberal friends.

Power Grab: How Obama's Green Policies Will Steal Your Freedom and Bankrupt America ReviewCharlton Heston starred in the 1973 movie "Soylent Green". The year is 2022, and we are all poor and without power, both electrical and political. Christopher Horner's book begins by looking ahead to the year 2015 and painting an eerily similar picture of an impoverished existence. The real irony here is that the sad future is created, not by man's mismanagement of earth's resources, but by one man's presidential withholding of those sources of power from society.
As stated in the book, environmentalism seeks to use the state to create scarcity as a means to exert their will. Indeed, the author contends the policies and people being instituted into our nation's government are about establishing and holding power over our lives, our very future, and that of our children. Mr. Hornor argues that "the Power Grab is to grab your power, your wealth, economic liberties and personal freedoms." A technique to attempt to do this is akin to "yelling eco-crisis in a crowded recession."
The author adds, perhaps a bit hopefully, that "...only the left are panicking as the voters head for the exit."
This book is rather heavy and yes, a bit apocalyptic but worth burning the midnight oil to read. Yet, contrary to Charlton Heston's character trapped in a drab future he cannot alter, "Power Grab" encourages the reader to grab the constitutional power reins and steer your future and that of your children's back on the course of freedom.

No He Can't: How Barack Obama Is Dismantling Hope and Change ReviewI ordered this book from the Amazon Vine program, thinking it would provide, more background, information on B.H. Obama while in office. Of the former, I had obtained much from my extensive pre-election reading of articles and books such as Case Against Barack Obama and Obama Nation, which I still recommend.
Unfortunately, this book did not deliver the quality information I'd expected, however. I agree with Matthew Morgan, that while the volume is well-written, it offers scant referencing, a major issue.
Another problem: McCullough rehashes articles he wrote before Obama attained the presidency. He claims to have been one of the first journalists to predict Obama's election, and one of the first to criticize him. All of that is news to me. If true, however, it makes little difference, as the book offers no particular substance for readers who prefer to focus on facts, as opposed to opinions.
Non-fiction of any kind is fairly useless without careful footnotes and referencing, and this book has none of the former and precious few of the latter in chapter bibliographies. I did not need to acquire it to find a list of further reading material. What readers want to know is where each bit of information, such as there is, originated. That's not here.
I'm afraid this book offers nothing so much as a squandered opportunity to expose the most important facts that the mainstream press seems to intentionally avoid reporting at all costs.
If I could give the book three and a half stars, I would, only thanks to McCullough's crisp and chatty writing style. But what the book has in pizzazz does not make up for its dearth of data or substantiation. No He Can't: How Barack Obama Is Dismantling Hope and Change Overview

Gangster Government: Barack Obama and the New Washington Thugocracy ReviewDavid Freddoso's new book, Gangster Government, cuts past the rhetoric of the last few years and cogently analyzes the major initiatives of the Obama Administration. Based on shoe-leather reporting of the first degree, Freddoso presents valuable insights into the programs that have been at the center of our national discourse: the stimulus, Obamacare, the auto bailout, etc. As Freddoso examines each in turn, he illustrates how the Administration has been willing to ignore fundamental principles of law to achieve its ends, which often involve rewards for the Administration's friends and punishment for those, no matter the reason, who happen to stand in its way. Freddoso does not just question the ends of this Administration; he also questions what the impact of this Administration will be on the nature of American Government.
In short, Gangster Government is an excellent analysis of the first two years of the Obama Administration, showing the way in which it chose not to allow various crises to go to waste.Gangster Government: Barack Obama and the New Washington Thugocracy Overview
