Lincoln on War ReviewA nice array of Abraham Lincoln's written comments on war as complied by the noted expert on our greatest president, Harold Holzer.
Mr. Holzer keeps his informed introductions to the selected comments brief, wisely allowing Lincoln's clear words to speak for themselves. (I was interested to learn that the weight of current scholarship is now on the side of President Lincoln, not John Hay, as being the author of the famous letter of condolence to Mrs. Bixby.)

I was looking for a book that could give a comprehensive overview of American Presidents. Such a book in one volume was almost impossible to find. This book offered a different approach to the same idea.
The book is unique. It is like an archive or museum in itself. It is filled with unusual mementoes from various presidencies, copies of things that personalize the era. Some pop up, others are folded within envelopes, and so on. So, on every page there is something different.

The Rise And Fall Of The Confederate Government: Volume 2 (Da Capo Paperback) ReviewThis book should be required reading in all classrooms, and should further be owned by anyone who would like to understand the truth behind the Confederacy, and the unconstitutional war that followed the secession of the Southern states.
President Davis shows himself to be a preeminent constitutional scholar with his in-depth analysis of the 10th Amendment and the inherent right of the states to secede from the union into which they voluntarily entered. While this book was difficult for President Davis to write, due to the hardships he endured during and after the war, we should all be thankful that he took the time and conducted the research that went into this well-written and very informative book.
There are a great deal of insights into the inner workings of the Confederate government, but this book is worth far more than the price of admission for the constitutional analysis, and for the way he explains how the war started, and the duplicity of the Lincoln cabinet during the critical months prior to the first shots being fired.
The only blemish on this edition is the ridiculous "introduction" by James McPhearson. Why someone was chosen to write an "introduction" to a book of this magnitude who has no understanding of the issues discussed by President Davis, and who wants only to make petty comments about the man and the cause that he fought for is a question to which there is no answer. This book would have been a far better package without the apologist nonsense that hides under the title of "introduction", and it's recommended that this part of the book be ignored by serious students of history and the Constitution.
This is an eye-opening book that will forever alter your perceptions of the events that gave rise to the events of 1860-1865.The Rise And Fall Of The Confederate Government: Volume 2 (Da Capo Paperback) Overview

The Trial: The Assassination of President Lincoln and the Trial of the Conspirators ReviewIn 1865 President Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, this is commonly known by most people. But what is not known is that there were eight others who had a part in the conspiracy to kill the president.

Unlike the other books I have read on the subject; this one has very little plot, in fact the book spends more time talking about the trial rather than the events leading to the assassination. Rather the author has put together the actual court transcripts of the testimony against each of the conspirators.

After reading the text, which took about 5 hours, I learned more about those involved and even found out a few new things along the way. I found the discussion about Dr. Mudd so intriguing I spent several hours on the internet reading about him.

I found the book well documented and researched. The author has certainly seemed to leave no stone unturned. Overall this book is the best overall presentation into the murder and conspiracy I have read so far.
