Madam President ReviewAnybody who had read this book before the New Hampshire primary wouldn't have been at all surprised at the outcome. Nor would they have bought into the simplistic analysis that followed Clinton's victory. Goldenberg does a remarkable job of going beyond the caricatures and cliches that dominate most reporting about Hillary, and paints a fascinating, multi-layered portrait of her historic trajectory. The UK's Guardian newspaper has always been one of the best sources for fresh, reliable journalism about American politics. In keeping with this tradition, Goldenberg -- a long-time international reporter for the paper -- has produced a book head and shoulders above some of the other recent offerings about Clinton, filled with fresh insights and clues that have me believing she will be occupying the White House a year from now. Impeccably researched, but never boring, the book especially shines when it describes Hillary's first Senate campaign when she threw herself into the lion's den of Upstate New York -- an area so Republican it rejected native son, FDR -- and won over die-hard conservative voters who once saw her as the anti-Christ. As for the question posed in the title of the book, Goldenberg does a good job of examining the factors at play while just managing to avoid the potential pitfalls of political prognostication.Madam President Overview

This is a thoughtful, courageous account of the outrageous abuse of presidential power and its subsequent cover-up by thugs and cowards. Under Billary Clinton, the executive office became a tawdry base for philandering, selling out to China, and dismantling the military, not to mention turning a blind eye to Osama bin Laden and other fundamental Islamic terrorist organizations. Dear God, please save us from another Clinton presidency. Excellent book. The Way to Win: Taking the White House in 2008 ReviewWith the 2008 Presidential election strategies well underway in covert measures, this incisive and eminently readable book provides an intriguing primer into what it may take for candidates to win in two years. ABC News political director Mark Halperin and the Washington Post's John F. Harris have collaborated to divulge the so-called trade secrets that have been behind the almost dynastic predominance of the Bush and Clinton administrations through past, current and perhaps future terms. It is interesting to note that neither author has been involved with a political campaign from the inside, successful or not, but they do lend a journalistic perspective that provides a great deal of credibility with their combined purview of the political media landscape. Consequently, they express their guarded respect of the political savvy of Karl Rove without sharing a detailed insider's profile of what makes him such a supreme strategist during the heat of a campaign.
On the other hand, Halperin and Harris spend a somewhat inordinate amount of time crediting Matt Drudge of the Drudge Report for much of the vote swaying in past elections. From their vantage point, they view Drudge as most pivotal in the Gore and Kerry defeats. They hold Gore and Kerry accountable to the point that they were not maintaining their public images relative to Drudge's online disclosures about the candidates' personal gaffes and political missteps. The big revelation here is that attempting to rise above the pervasive influence of the Web has apparently become tantamount to political suicide. Drudge's sharpened ability to scoop stories and frame candidates into personas unbeknownst to them has been the commentator's ongoing trump card. To the point that someone else is shaping the candidates' images, the co-authors make a compelling case about the importance of keeping attuned to the online scuttlebutt no matter how preposterous at times.
They also see Senator Hillary Clinton intently learning from her husband's example in setting the stage for her own likely candidacy in 2008. She is obviously delaying any such announcement until after this November's midterm elections because she can continue to reshape her persona and augment her coffers without undue scrutiny. Despite their extensive reporting backgrounds, Halperin and Harris manage to avoid the cynicism that could have easily seeped into their often insightful political handbook. For a more complete perspective on what it may take to win, I think it makes sense to read this in conjunction with George Lakoff's books on the conceptual metaphors that need to be employed to incite voters to support candidates, as well as Bill Clinton's own comprehensive account of his successful campaigns. There needs to be an understanding of perspectives from the inside as well as the outside to figure out the true way to win.The Way to Win: Taking the White House in 2008 Overview

Conduct Unbecoming: How Barack Obama is Destroying The Military and Endangering Our Security ReviewWhile little in this book will be a surprise to those who have been tuned in to the news over the past three years, Conduct Unbecoming will certainly act as the helpful condensed version that will remind people of stories long forgotten by the Jurassic Press. Everything from seemingly innocent statements of Bill Ayers being "a professor who was just a guy in my neighborhood" and that Obama had not heard those crazy things from Reverend Wright. Patterson takes a thorough and very in depth look at both the campaign and the administration to date not just with the authority of an avid news watcher and researcher, but as someone who has worked in the White House. Buzz carried the nuclear football for President Clinton and saw firsthand the behind the scenes dealings of the inner circles of the White House and how these times were then reported in the news cycles. While some liberals will try to discredit this book or shrug it off because of a dislike of the title or a negative insinuation, the sources listed will lend the credibility to fact over feeling. However, for the open minded liberal or conservative, this book will be a great refresher read and the sources will verify that Patterson once again has provided insight that he and very few others are capable of providing.
One great addition to this book is a lengthy explanation that the majority of the Jurassic Press are far too afraid to cover, in fear of being labeled Islamophobic, racist or otherwise intolerant. In an appendix, Patterson provides a very thorough timeline of "The Long War", listing events that you are sure to remember and a great many more that will have slipped your mind due to time passed. This listing provides to the other part of Patterson's extensive background: National Security. As a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, his experience in the Armed Forces included combat operations in Grenada, Somalia, Rwanda, Haiti and Bosnia. Through his experiences over twenty plus years of serving as an officer, he saw and lived the life of an expert of what threats are, both large and small. If you are a person who supports the military but may not understand the operations and what "security" means through those eyes, this is the book to rely on to explain things in a simple yet thorough manner that will have you feeling educated enough to begin teaching your well intentioned but misguided liberal friends.
