Leading the Way: Three Truths from the Top Companies for Leaders Review"Leading the Way: Three Truths from the Top Companies for Leaders" by Robert Gandossy and Marc Effron, deals with the three leadership truths which they believe provides "critical foundation" to build strong leaders. The three leadership truths are: 1) The CEO and Board of Directors should provide leadership and inspiration (actively involved in leadership processes) , 2) A maniacal focus on high-potential leaders (identify the best talent and providing challenging assignment for them) and 3) Doing the right programs the right ways (developing programs that would help enhance leadership skills). However there are other "Little Things" that organizations should also considered in terms of building leaders such as communication, paving the way for social networks, fostering reciprocity and others which are seemingly unimportant issues or frequently overlooked, but are actually crucial for organizations. These are explained in great details in the book. Finally, the authors feel that leadership programs in general should be link directly to the organization's business strategy.
The last chapter in "Leading the Way" deals with future trends that organizations need to face in order to be successful and five rules that the authors feel were curcial to develop leadership capabilities. I think overall, this is a useful book to learn and understand about developing leaders as the authors provided examples, and anecdotes which are useful in terms of illustrating the authors' point of view. My only criticism of this book is that I wish the authors had structured it better within each chapters. There are many subtopics within each chapter which can be a little confusing and can be combined. However, I do find the short summary in each chapters helpful. Anyone who is interested to know more about developing leaders should definitely read this book.Leading the Way: Three Truths from the Top Companies for Leaders Overview

Best Practices in Talent Management: How the World's Leading Corporations Manage, Develop, and Retain Top Talent (Pfeiffer Essential Resources for Training and HR Professionals) ReviewTalent refers to the potential in people including perhaps a special aptitude or faculty. Unfortunately, often the talent in our organizations goes unnoticed, and this can have a disastrous effect on our need for creativity and innovation, especially during a moment of reckoning - when change is necessary. Given our fair share of economic challenges, a movement known as talent management has taken hold in the United States and is now spreading throughout the world to ensure that we take advantage of all the capacity that our human organizations have to offer.
Up to now, we haven't had a resource in one place that demonstrates some of the best ways (as authors Marshall Goldsmith and Louis Carter point out) to not just evaluate but to invest in talent. The new volume Best Practices in Talent Management published by Carter's Best Practice Institute carefully outlines fourteen well-documented cases illustrating proven tools, instruments, models, and practices for implementing top talent management in your own organization. You'll find in these exemplars a number of common attributes, such as an openness to learning, integrity, employee empowerment, a thirst for collaboration, and a recognition of people's intrinsic motivation - all well-established but not often practiced elements of the innovation process embedded in managing and retaining talent. It is thus destined to become a vital resource for all managers in the applied HR field.

The Why of Work: How Great Leaders Build Abundant Organizations That Win Review
Dave and Wendy Ulrich organize the material in this book within a framework of seven questions. As you review the list, begin to formulate your answers.
1. What am I known for?
2. Where am I going?
3. Whom do I travel with?
4. How do I build a positive work environment?
5. What challenges interest me?
6. How do I respond to disposability and change?
7. What delights me?
They devote a separate chapter to each of these seven questions, focusing on real-world situations in which various people address the given issues each query raises. Perhaps your initial responses to the questions have begun to suggest what you would like to change. Perhaps they have evoked others. For example, which of the seven are the easiest for you to answer? Which are the most difficult? Is the answer to any one of them of greater importance to you than any others?
In the Preface, the Ulrichs explain what they hope their book will accomplish. They seem wholeheartedly committed to helping their reader to add substantial value in all areas of her or his own life (notably family, career, and community), and also to help their reader help others to do so. There are frequent references to meaning or the absence thereof. The Ulrichs share their thoughts and feelings about both the "why" and the "how" of meaning at work. "The why refers to the human search for meaning that finds its way into our offices and factories, a search that motivates, inspires, and defines us. The how gets us into the practicalities of how leaders facilitate that search personally and among their employees." Purpose gives both meaning and value to such initiatives. The Ulrichs characterize human beings as "meaning-making machines" who seek and often find inherent value in making sense of life.
Such meaning also has market value because "meaningful work solves real problems, contributes real benefits, and thus adds real value to customers and investors." In this context, the Ulrichs introduce their concept of the "abundant organization" and identify its dominant characteristics: "a work setting in which individuals coordinate their aspirations and actions to create meaning for themselves, value for stakeholders, and hope for humanity at large"; an organization that "has enough and to spare of the things that matter most": creativity, hope, resilience, determination, resourcefulness, and leadership; a profitable enterprise that concentrates on opportunities, potentialities, synergies, and fulfillment of a diversity of human needs and experiences; and especially when times are tough, a social as well as economic forces that can "bring order, integrity, and purpose out of chaos and disintegration."
An abundant organization gives meaning to everyone involved by offering a spiritual as well as physical environment within which to thrive as human beings; their contributions, in turn, create a decisive competitive advantage for the organization while increasing and enhancing its market as well as its social value.
In the final chapter and then in the Apppendix, the Ulrichs share their thoughts and feelings about the implications of the seven principles as well as actions of abundant organizations that they proposed in the first nine chapters. Once again they stress the importance of identifying and then resolving the root causes of both organizational and individual dysfunctionality and deterioration rather than merely respond to its symptoms. Once again, they reassert that the underlying cause of many (most?) problems in the workplace is a "deficit" of both meaning and purpose.
To become and then remain "abundant," an organization must help its people to leverage their strengths and serve their core values, meanwhile doing so with their career objectives in proper alignment with their organization's strategic objectives. That is the "Why" of their relationship. In this brilliant book, Dave and Wendy Ulrich also provide leaders with the "How," the information and counsel they need, to create an abundance of purpose and meaning both for themselves and for everyone else involved, at all levels and in all areas of the enterprise they share. The Why of Work: How Great Leaders Build Abundant Organizations That Win Overview

Leaders at All Levels: Deepening Your Talent Pool to Solve the Succession Crisis (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) ReviewRam Charan's "Leaders At All Levels" takes on a major crisis that exists today in most large US corporations - the shortage of leadership talent. Companies while focused on the next quarters' earnings target have ignored the hard work of building future company leaders. In a recent poll of 1380 Human Resource (HR) directors of large US companies, sixty percent said their firms have no CEO succession plan in place.
The top jobs are harder now than in the past due to hyper-competition, changing technology, and a raft of emerging players from every corner of the globe pressuring companies to keep changing their game to survive and thrive. And the evidence shows that a lot of firms are not responding to it well. Why? Charan argues the state of leadership development is faulty and companies must abandon traditional leadership practices. The severe shortage of leaders is an unmistakable sign that the typical approaches to leadership are fundamentally flawed. We urgently need to get at the root causes, faulty conventional wisdom about what leadership is and how to develop it.
"Leaders At All Levels" lays out a radically new leadership-development model, "The Apprenticeship Model," which transforms leadership development from a discrete activity run by the human resources staff to an everyday process that is fully integrated into the fabric of the business and in which line leaders play a central role. The model centers on customizing and accelerating a potential leader's development and growth path.
"It is designed to give each promising leader the opportunities that are right for him/her at the fastest pace of growth he/she can handle, defining the learning in each new job and making sure the learning in fact took place before helping the leader take the next step or leap forward." It allows leaders to develop increasingly "sophisticated and nuanced versions of their core capabilities in an astonishing short time."
While Charan points out that the model is not for the faint-hearted, it does work. He validates this approach with real-world examples of its success at General Electric (GE), Colgate-Palmolive, Novartis Pharmaceuticals, Textron, and WellPoint, Inc.

The book is organized into sections including: how to recognize leadership potential (including GE's leadership criteria); how to develop a leader; how "Apprenticeship" turns potential into leaders; leadership growth through concentric learning; freedom to fail; how to manage "Apprenticeship" systemically: and choosing the CEO. It also includes tools for: rating a company's ability to develop leaders at the highest level; spotting a leader; what makes a good boss-mentor: and what to coach on.
"Leaders At All Levels" is a must read for CEOs and Boards of Directors concerned with CEO succession and leadership development. The book will also appeal to anyone who aspires to a leadership role, particularly those who feel trapped in a faulty development process. For this last group, the last chapter, "What can a leader do?" will more than justify the cost of the book.

Linkage Inc.'s Best Practices in Succession Planning (Essential Knowledge Resource) ReviewOften, the main difference in a company's long-term success is how effective they are in succession planning. As a person that has worked with several companies over several decades, I can attest that most of us do a poor job in this all-important arena.
This excellent book removes any excuses we may have. Combining case studies and practical advice it provides a well-spring of well-written guidelines and procedures that we can implement. In addition, I found the plethora of charts, graphs and exhibits to be extremely useful in communicating and selling this concept to management.
The book is organized in a very useful way. Dividing the subject into 4 parts makes it much more palatable for even the worst of us ADD types. These sections are:
1.Introduction
2.Best Practices
3.Toolkit
4.Resource Guide
I purchased this book in 2007 and have referred to it many times in the past two years. I am really glad I have it. It has saved me countless hours of research and planning.
I hope you find this review helpful.

The Definitive Drucker: Challenges For Tomorrow's Executives -- Final Advice From the Father of Modern Management ReviewI had the good fortune to spend one to three days a year with Peter Drucker from 1992-1999: He consulted with Carol Coles and me in developing research and consulting services for lowering the cost of capital, launching the 400 Year Project to accelerate global progress by 20 times during 2015 through 2035, and in writing about what the next generations of leadership best practices would be like. You can get a glimpse of that connection in Jack Beatty's book, The World According to Peter Drucker. I also will be writing more about Peter's ideas on and contributions to these subjects in the forthcoming book, Adventures of an Optimist.
I once asked Peter how he would guard his intellectual legacy after his death. He confidently replied that he had a very good plan and that all would be well. Having seen that this book was published after his death under the title, The Definitive Drucker, I'm not so sure he was right about protecting his intellectual legacy.
For the record, this book is not the definitive book on Peter Drucker. Why?
1. The book is almost totally devoted to his ideas about for-profit management as pursued by very large companies.
2. There is virtually no mention of his ideas about society in general.
3. His work on how to be effective executive is incompletely shared.
4. Dr. Haas Edersheim deliberately ignores the roots of Drucker's concepts as described in Adventures of a Bystander, which I believe is essential context for appreciating his observations.
5. The manner by which his nonprofit consulting experiences helped him formulate his for-profit ideas is ignored.
6. Almost all of my favorite anecdotes based on what Peter said to me about the companies described in this book are left out. Here's an example of the insights those anecdotes provide: Can anyone appreciate Drucker's tendency to revise his opinions to claim that he was the first to notice something without knowing that he insisted that I take most of my Dell examples out of The Irresistible Growth Enterprise because he was concerned that Dell wouldn't continue to prosper after 1999?
7. The full scope of his thoughts about for-profit management is ignored. For instance, his many questions and ideas about capital markets are mostly missing . . . except as they arise in the DLJ example of how he encouraged the founders to go public in the 1970s.
There is one excellent element about this book that makes it well worth reading: If you renamed this book, The Definitive Drucker as Consultant, you wouldn't be far off the mark. His consulting practice was mostly invisible to those who weren't his clients, but his approach is one that most consultants could learn much from. I was very impressed by the way that Dr. Haas Edersheim's interviews and writings captured the essence of Peter Drucker in a one-on-one situation. Although some of the earlier books about Peter addressed this topic, none did so as thoroughly and as well as this book.
Most business leaders today have read relatively little of Peter Drucker's writings. But most have read some of the so-called original management theories that are little more than a rephrasing of Peter's original designs while not acknowledging Peter's work at all. Where Peter always tried to pick the best example for a point he had to make, most business authors seem to be only able to write about recent examples that they have experienced. And many business book readers prefer it that way. Dr. Haas Edersheim's book fits that mold very well. She develops themes from some of Peter's long-time, large-company clients (like GM and GE), adds some of her own clients, and finds a few other examples that seem to fit what Peter has to say. For those who want to see some of Peter's work dressed up with more recent examples, this book is probably the best resource.
Even though English was a learned language for Peter, he wrote English like a talented, native-speaking novelist. Where Peter is quoted in the book, the beautiful language shines. Dr. Haas Edersheim, by comparison, writes like an academic/consultant and the experience is not always pleasant. She likes to force ideas into her metaphors (something Peter would never do), display lots of grids (something Peter couldn't imagine anyone wanting to do), and ramble on endlessly about things that could be stated quite simply (something Peter would use his ruthless self-editing to avoid).
Interestingly, Peter always told me that the impact of his books was quite minor compared to the effect of his essays in The Wall Street Journal and other mass media. Why? Lots of people read well-constructed essays in the mass media and few read more than a few pages in any business book. He also doubted if very much in the Harvard Business Review was really read and understood. I was shocked to see how little this book relied on his essays. Hopefully, someone will realize that those essays are the essential kernel of his influence and write about them in the future.
Dr. Haas Edersheim obviously is drawn to strategic questions and Peter, of course, founded the field of strategy for organizations. If that's your interest, you'll find this book to be quite solid. The Definitive Drucker: Challenges For Tomorrow's Executives -- Final Advice From the Father of Modern Management Overview

The Executive Guide to High-Impact Talent Management: Powerful Tools for Leveraging a Changing Workforce ReviewI read a quote by Bill Gates many years ago that would have been a fitting tribute for this book. When asked what gave him the most pleasure in his role as Microsoft CEO, Mr. Gates responded, "Hiring good people." The term of "talent management" might be a new millennium way to describe what used to be called, "hiring and managing the best." The concept, regardless of how it is named, remains an integral managerial function.
Focused Presentation
Two early quotes by co-authors David DeLong and Steven Trautman set the tone for this extremely detailed, comprehensive and informative book:
"But with massive changes coming in workforce demographics, the number of candidates in the age bracket that normally fills leadership roles will drop 30 percent by 2015, according to recent research."
"Four generations with distinctly different orientations to work, technology, communication, and learning are leading to increased conflict in the workplace."
Detailed Introduction, Precise Notes Section and Unique Appendix
The introduction was an excellent preview with chapter-by-chapter summaries and the objectives of the book. I liked this format and wish that more books would follow its example. This overview provides a concise yet detailed summary. The neatly organized notes section at the end of the book provides precisely referenced sources for every chapter. The appendix has a "Checklist for the Effective Manager." This feature is a comprehensive series of questions directly associated with the book's content. I liked that the co-authors provided chapter references which will make this section a useful reference source.
Crisp Informative Format
There are 10 chapters with approximately 25 pages of content per chapter. The co-author's writing style is targeted for senior executives; however, readers from diverse backgrounds will also benefit. The authors employ generous use of bold-faced headings and bullets. This feature assisted with readability and to drive home key points. Another feature that I liked was gray highlighted areas called "For Talent Management and HR Business Partners" sprinkled throughout the book. The book's index was another example of the co-author's attention to detail for busy executives. Many entries are organized as phrases, and page numbers followed by an "f" or a "t" refer to figures or tables.
Knowledge Silo Matrix
The co-authors have developed an innovative tool called the Knowledge Silo Matrix (KSM). This is an intriguing graphical representation of specific knowledge domains called "silos." Actually, it is the only graphical chart displayed in the entire book.
Real-World Examples
The co-authors used many talent management scenarios from well-known companies. For example, Baker & McKenzie, Cisco, GE, New York Life and Pfizer. They also provided many other useful examples but in a more anonymous style. These mini-studies provide industry-specific expertise in a variety of sectors. You will likely find one from your own specialty area.
Regardless of which side of the hiring table equation you reside, this book will become a valuable, common-sense tool for preparation and future reference.
Please Note:
I was contacted by a McGraw-Hill representative and requested to provide a review. This is an objective review and I am not obliged to provide a positive one.
