Report of the Commission on the Renovation of the Executive Mansion ReviewFantastic slim old tome on the rebuilding of the White House during the Truman administration. Includes photos of the demolition and reconstruction and several high-quality color images of the finished rooms. It details many of the costs and history behind the project and includes detailed floor plans of the ground, first, second, and third floors of the Residence. The President's House: A History (2 Volume Set) ReviewOften, history is written in broad sweep narratives that can be static and boring to the reader. Although William Seale wrote more than 1,000 pages on the history of the White House, you can be assured that there is nothing static or boring about these volumes. He displays an understanding of the fact that history is about the human drama of real people facing real predicaments, and it's poignance is found in how they react to those predicaments.
Whereas a history book will tell you that the British burned the White House in 1814, Seale tells us what was happening on the DAY the British marched into town. The hundred sentry guards who were supposed to defend the White House were gone, and they could easily have taken on the battalion of 150 British soldiers who marched in the mud down Pennsylvania Avenue, walked around the White House like tourists, ate Dolley Madison's dinner, and then torched the White House with precision. Then there is the even more dramatic moment when Lincoln looked out across the Potomac into Virginia to see the flags of the Confederacy flying, knowing that soon the capital would be surrounded if Maryland seceded from the Union.

I come to it as a far outsider, with only a few administrative years in government in the 1960s, expecting something rather dry. Surprise! The author carries his experience and judgment easily, with adroit writing and (no surprise!) superb organization. An old hand at the White House--a total of 14 years with Eisenhower, Nixon and Ford--Patterson also served as president of the American Society for Public Administration. Among the goals of this book:
"--To paint a factual, nonpartisan picture of the White House at work for the other indispensable participants in the Washington environment--Congress, the media..., many of whom have inaccurate or negative stereotypes about that institution--impressions that the White House itself is slow to correct."

The George W. Bush administration provides basic, detailed information and orientation, but perspectives are drawn from FDR and Eisenhower forward. Patterson provides an unofficial organizational chart; if there is an official one, that's a secret. One need not read every page to enjoy and benefit from this remarkable presentation. The organizational bones come with plenty of meat. And there are even some delectable mixed nuts carefully sited in Patterson's scale-model White House. Air Force One: The Aircraft that Shaped the Modern Presidency ReviewOK, I admit it! I'm an aviation nut, and am in awe of the presidency and its trappings. I watch West Wing every Wednesday to get the inside view of the White House, and I own the DVD of Air Force One starring Harrison Ford. So this book was a natural for me, and I knew that I would love it even before I picked it up.
That said, once I started getting into the book, it was better than I ever anticipated. The authors do a great job of laying out the history of air travel and the office of the President, and you quickly realize how Air Force One was instrumental in creating the world view that the United States was (and is) a SuperPower nation. Not only do you get a great history lesson as to the importance of modern avaiation and the American presidency, you are also enlightend as to the technology and logisitcs involved in keeping the president moving around the globe.
This book is great for anyone who has an interest in presidential history, as well as people who love aviation history. The pictures, while many have been seen previously, make for a great and welcome addition to the text. You certainly feel as if you have had an opportunity to fly on Air Force One.
I really enjoy having this book in my library, and if I owned a coffee table, I'd have it sitting on the coffee table.Air Force One: The Aircraft that Shaped the Modern Presidency Overview
