To see the comments written by John Quincy Adams about the shows he saw in France while his father was participating in some of the most important diplomacy this country has ever been part of is truly facsinating.

The President's Table: Two Hundred Years of Dining and Diplomacy ReviewBarry Landau's wonderful book deserves special attention as it covers an area, for the most part, largely ignored by historians. In addition to broad general appeal, this book will particularly interest history buffs, gourmands, socialites, collectors, and scholars. History is most truly enjoyed through the tangible items that provide us a connection to our past, as well as, the stories that make those from the past come alive and more human. Landau has masterfully connected the two elements and created a wonderful saga that threads its way through our country's major events, all through a unique lens. A tremendously enjoyable and elaborate presentation of American material culture interspersed with the historic stories of dining, grand celebrations, and the subtle nuances of diplomacy and politics --- often as major events unfolded over food and drink. Not only is it beautifully presented but the material, fondly collected over 40 years, is a resource and collection of the first order. It is lavishly illustrated and thoughtfully organized with succinct yet insightful descriptions of each administration. He knows his subject. Further, the author's credentials could not be more relevant. Barry Landau has had the unique opportunity to participate on the stage of which he writes. His mother, lovingly acknowledged in the book for sparking his lifelong interest and thus this book, would be proud. I am told he is now working on a second volume. Let's hope it is an equally engaging companion to this one, and that he doesn't wait long!The President's Table: Two Hundred Years of Dining and Diplomacy Overview

The Final Days ReviewThis is an amazing account of the last few months of the Nixon presidency leading up to his eventual resignation. The first half of the book deals in larger chunks of time, but by the time the second half begins, each chapter encompasses a single day. As in ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN by the same authors, the reader may find the onslaught of different names to be intimidating; fortunately, the cast of characters list at the beginning of the book helps a lot. All the people involved are treated with a lot of respect, and their motivations are made very clear throughout with only a few exceptions.
Unlike ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN, this is not told from the viewpoint of the two authors. Through interviews and other methods, the two journalists have reconstructed what they believe those last few months to have been like. The result is an amazing and richly detailed look at the aftermath of one of the most important scandals in recent US history.
One of the real strengths of this book is that it allows the reader to see how the scandal affected many of the different people that were close to the President -- his aides, his family, the lawyers defending him, congressmen, fellow Republican leaders, etc. We see how his team tried (and eventually failed) to fight the accusations made at President and how his staff continued to get the work done even as he retreated farther and farther into himself.
Before I read ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN and THE FINAL DAYS, I really didn't know too many particulars about the whole Watergate scandal. I highly recommend this pair of books to anyone looking for detailed, yet highly readable sources of information.The Final Days Overview

White House Confidential: Revised and Expanded Edition ReviewDo you think the political scene is bad today? Or do you think it's just fine and people are making something out of nothing. Get a little perspective here. I received this book as a gift from a family member whose views are often at the opposite end of the political spectrum from mine. I opened it with equal curiosity and reservation. Within two minutes my reservations were gone. The authors quickly reveal with glee facts, possible fictions (so noted), and rumors we have forgotten, overlooked or never heard of. They go on to uncover more lies, secrets and hedges than all the country's special commissions combined - and in far fewer pages. Although they don't start at the beginning, they do cover the beginning, the very beginning, such as who the several President's prior to George Washington were and they goon to tales about the current inhabitant of the White House, in their uniquely round-about direct way. Once I started reading I couldn't stop. Does it make the current political climate any more acceptable? Well, not really, but it will take your mind off it for a while, give you a different perspective, undoubtedly teach you a number of things you never imagined and it'll be fun.
