CFO as Business Integrator ReviewFollowing "CFO: Architect" and "eCFO", at last a work of real substance, and minimal PwC consulting-ese (only to be replaced with SAP-centrism, an understandable weakness, as SAP sponsored the book).
Each chapter is written by a businessperson with considerable depth in his particular area - from a business perspective - which distinguishes this volume from previous books in the series, which - to put it just slightly unkindly - were written by consultants who couldn't consult their way out of a paper bag.
Shortcomings aside, this volume is obligatory reading for every CFO and financial manager who who wants to navigate his company by looking forward versus by looking at the rear-view mirror.CFO as Business Integrator Overview

The Executive Guide to Boosting Cash Flow and Shareholder Value: The Profit Pool Approach Review... and it's written in a practical way -- no finance formulae, arcane accounting rules, or esoteric notions. It's great -- it gets to the point quickly and succinctly; gets around accounting and other issues to see real value creation in all parts of the business at a `granular' level. And, then, it sets out why managing the long term is critical, and how that can be done to grow a lot of value. I'm a believer. The middle part could be a lot shorter -- I guess there's stuff in there that's new thinking. The rest of it just distills established value thinking (like The Value Imperative by McTaggart, another favorite) into actionable approaches. Take note -- it doesn't explain WHY we should manage to drive value growth, but I guess we've come to accept that as a mandate in the last few decades. Good luck with it.

Earnings Management: An Executive Perspective ReviewDr. McKee's Earnings Management offers a great deal of insight into a highly controversial topic within the realm of accounting. The first third of this book explains the difference between ethical earnings management practices and fraudulent financial reporting. He points out that Generally Accepted Accounting Principles offer multiple opportunities for legal and ethical earning management and points out the benefits of such practices. An especially interesting section provides a model that can be used to measure the bankruptcy probability of a company based upon recent financial performance. Dr. McKee shows how the use of earnings management techniques can significantly reduce financial distress and legitimately strengthen shareholder confidence.
The final two thirds of the book includes specific examples of earnings management techniques used by various public companies in recent years. His explanations of these techniques are thorough, yet at the same time not overly-technical. The writing is straightforward and you will not need to be a CPA in order to understand exactly how your company can take advantage of these earning management practices.
This book is geared toward those involved in the management of public companies; however, I believe it will appeal to a much wider group of readers. It provides information that is useful to all users of financial statements. The ideas contained within it would be useful to CEOs and CFOs, but also to shareholders and creditors, auditors and financial reporting managers, really anyone with an interest in the accounting practices of both public and privately-held companies. Highly Recommended!

Activity-based Cost Management: An Executive's Guide ReviewThis book is an excellent resource for learning and understanding ABC accounting. Unlike many web articles and white papers, Gary's book is a practical not academic approach from someone who has been there, done that, and has the t-shirt. It's filled with lots of explanatory diagrams which help to visualize the concepts presented and are useful when presenting on a high-level to executives under time constraints for reading. Chapter 1 clearly presents ABC basic concepts while Chapter 2 is a direct follow-on expanding the depth and breath of those basic concepts. Chapter 3 addresses the question that all senior management wants to know: Are all your trading partners worth it to you? Subsequent chapters focus on typical ABC modeling applications most relevant to organizations. Chapter 6 gives a very good cross-comparison of project/work order costing vs. ABC that is very helpful to project-centric organizations in understanding how ABC differentiates itself. Chapter 7 succinctly places ABC software in the reengineering software spectrum without getting lost in a technological morass. Chapter 9 addresses rapid prototyping for getting initial results from the methodology that can be tweaked iteratively to grow a more sophisticated ABC model. In conclusion, I highly recommend this book and look forward to Gary's "ABC Management - Making it Work" which is next on my ABC must-read list.Activity-based Cost Management: An Executive's Guide Overview

Enterprise Risk Management: Today's Leading Research and Best Practices for Tomorrow's Executives (Robert W. Kolb Series) ReviewA new book on Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) has arrived in a rapidly filling field. What should we make of it? Is it a threat (i.e. does it only muddy the already turbulent waters after putting a charge on our wallets and bookshelves) or is it an opportunity (i.e. something that is good for the growth of the discipline and its practitioners)? Is it minor league, major league or world champion?
Quantitatively, it has two editors, Betty J. Simkins, a US business and finance academic, and John Fraser, a Canadian senior executive practitioner. It runs 577 pages which includes a comprehensive index and contains 26 chapters, written by 30 contributors and several panellists. It is divided into six parts (Overview; ERM Management, Culture and Control; ERM Tools and Techniques; Types of Risk; Survey Evidence and Academic Research; Special Topics and Case Studies) and features a convenient chapter format comprising of an argument, conclusions, notes and references.
According to the book's subtitle: Today's Leading Research and Best Practices for Tomorrow's Executives, it is intended to be read by up-and-coming managers with their sights set on the C-Suite. I would broaden that audience to experienced practitioners, curious students of all organizations, and academics who have an interest in this fascinating and often misunderstood discipline.
Qualitatively, it is honest, unpretentious and well written and edited, qualities that are not always honoured in the field of managing risk. Moreover, with almost three dozen perspectives (including the panellists) you can be assured that you are not being inflicted with only one person's opinion. As a keen student of risk management, I appreciated the nicely balanced approach - a nuanced blend of concepts and practice - which passes from the contributors through the skilful hands of the two editors. I particularly liked the emphasis on risk culture - and not just the usual nostrums about "the tone at the top" or "management buy-in". I have come to gag at those facile clichés and will take a full star off any review of books that rely on them. In several chapters dedicated to organizational culture, the contributors dig below the popular veneer to penetrate one of the most challenging prerequisites of ERM - a healthy, coherent and robust organizational attitude and ethic towards risk. Of course, there is always more to drill, but this is at least a credible insight beyond the penetrating insights into the obvious that so often ricochet around ERM conference halls.
Although I thought I'd seen them all, I also appreciated that a number of useful tools were laid on the table. To be sure, there is a point to be mooted here and a claim to be challenged there. For example, the notion of risk appetite and tolerance, while treated by several contributors at length, leaves the reader wondering why such an important subject has never been able provoke a consistent definition, let alone treatment by practitioners. These quibbles aside, the scope of topics addressed here is impressive, spanning lofty and arcane topics like strategy, finance and reputation, as well as gritty techniques like running risk assessment workshops and plotting the results. Midway through the book, there are some pithy risk management insights from Warren Buffet that many investors would agree is worth the price of the book alone.
Like all worthwhile books, this one is best read critically, reflected deeply upon and discussed thoroughly with knowledgeable or interested colleagues. To be sure, risk management is risky - that is to say, mishandled like any tool, machine or weapon, it will likely hurt you and others. Understand and embrace its principles and respect its limitations and risk management can be an intriguingly wise counsellor. This book is an excellent investment for anyone who cares deeply about the risks to their organization. Perhaps some of the executives who are in jail or facing prosecution for mismanaging their enterprise risks will find it offers advice too late in the game to make any difference. For the rest of us, this book can provide useful prescriptive advice that might otherwise take a lifetime of costly trial and error to acquire. In my view, it is a first class job and well worth the price.

EVA and Value-Based Management: A Practical Guide to Implementation ReviewThis book does NOT offer 'A practical guide to valuation' but a theoretical, oldfashioned discussion of the 'Metrics War'and some empirical research on EVA, Compensation and CFROI-Fade.
My rating has got these origins: Empirical research on Compensation,EVA and CFROI-Fade: A+. Discussion of EVA/CFROI: D-. Terminology: D value for 'Hands-on-valuation': F- Structure: F- Style: F-.
This book does contain interesting empirical research on EVA etc, but it does not offer 'A practical Guide to Implementation' because it does not contain a STAGE-Approach. Its terminology differs from any other book I've read, you must often guess, which formulas the authors used, because they did not have the courtesy to express their formulas. Some formulas are wrong nad their discussion of the 'metrics war' betweenn EVA and CFROI lags 5 years behind reality. They attack old methods of CFROI,which Boston Consulting and Holt Value published 5 (!) years ago. They fail to know, that BCG have refined CVA/CFROI and that BAYER. Lufthansa, and VEBA have implemented these refined CFROI-techniques,which are way better, than the old methods, which the book attacks.
Moreover, this book is terrible to read due to a lack of structure, the absence of clear definitions, the lack of formulas, a wordy style, which exhausts your nerves, and many value judgements....
