Common Sense Self-Defense: "A Woman's Self-Defense Survival Guide" ReviewA beloved friend gifted this book to me, knowing that I would benefit from the practical self-defense information and techniques. I am an active single woman, mother, and grandmother. I move about by automobile and Airline flights without hesitation for nights out on the town, for visits with family and friends, and to destinations in the U.S. and the world.
I decided a long time ago not to allow fear to rule my life, instead, to allow Spirit to guide my steps. I know without doubt that Spirit guided the author, Mark James, to write this book, because I felt his passion for the topic. I also know that Spirit guided my friend to share it with me, knowing that I need to focus more on my personal safety and the importance of self-defense.
Mark James, is an expert on the subject of Self-Defense. After reading the first chapter I knew that I needed to pay attention, it was almost like listening to my father and/or my big brother saying, "pay attention this is important." The reader will be amazed at the amount of information that is provided in this one book.
Mr. James is also an excellent writer. He masterfully transforms technical information and instructions into a presentation of information that is very interesting, practical, and with easy to follow steps. The added bonus of the book is that it is filled with photographed demonstrations...excellent.
Last but an important point, the scenarios and demonstrations are presented in such a manner that allows for consideration after you finish reading the book. Now I am more aware of my surroundings. I think about safety before I leave home, i.e., where am I going to park; letting someone know where I am going and when I plan to return home; not going to the ATMs after dark, etc.Common Sense Self-Defense: "A Woman's Self-Defense Survival Guide" Overview

Defensive Handgun: Preparing to Prevail ReviewDefensive Handgun: Preparing to Prevail In a serious attempt to learn all that I can to prepare for the inevitable encounter with a low-life, I read as many professional books on preparing the mind and body as I can find. "Defensive Handgun" was ballyhooed in an NRA magazine as the epitome of instruction in how to handle oneself in a life threatening situation. First of all, there are more than enough typographical errors to lend credence to the idea that these books come straight from MS-Notebook to press. Beyond that, most of the other information can be found elsewhere, but the really desired information regarding actual confrontations is lacking in examples, per se. A good discussion of dealing with more than two adversaries is essentially absent. The many pages wasted in listing the offices of the various authorities would have been put to a better use in discussing what to do in real life threatening situations. This becomes really important to those of us who do not frequent gymnasiums and karate schools. I have no trouble with the idea of mental preparation, but it would be nice to know who to shoot at first when the chips are down and more than two thugs seek to gain the advantage over me. Tell me what to expect from these cowards as the shooting begins. Do they wet themselves and run away? Do they rush me? Do they apologize and wish me well? I need to know what others have experienced so that I can have an expectation of surviving if I do my part. If I have seven rounds, and I am proficient with my weapon, how can I best place my shots when confronting a large gang? Quigley writes well, gives excellent examples and reasonable measures any of us can take to improve our awareness and our sense of security. Defensive Tactics for the Security Professional ReviewThis book is an excellent guide for the security professional. It encompasses superb instructions in many ways to protect yourself and others. Although not a security professional full-time I found the book a useful addition to my control and restraint repertoire. The only criticism I can find with this book is that it appears to be written for the experienced security professional so all beginners should ideally have a firm background in military or martial art self defence techniques to really appreciate it.Defensive Tactics for the Security Professional Overview

Armed and Female: Twelve Million American Women Own Guns, Should You ReviewI just finished reading Paxton Quigley's Armed and Female. It is a well-written, easy to read book, written by a woman for women about firearm usage, safety, and training. I learned a great deal from this informative book and I would highly recommend it to other women who may be thinking of obtaining a firearm for self and family protection (even for women whose husbands already have firearms in the home but have never handled them), and for women interested in target shooting.
In this age where gun safety is correctly emphasized for the initiate. You will learn the rules of self-defense as well as safety from both a legal and philosophic perspective. I think this is a must read for all women who have made the decision to take responsibility for their and/or their family's protection with a firearm. The reality is that the police cannot be everywhere at all times to protect everyone, particularly women, the elderly, and the disabled---all of whom are viewed as special targets by criminal predators. Contrary to conventional wisdom the police do not have a duty to protect an individual citizen, but only respond once a criminal act has been committed. Police protection, legally, is only owed to the community as a whole, but not to single individuals. The book is an eye opener and I highly recommend it.
