Finding Marco ReviewMarco Gentile is born in Acerenza, in the south of Italy. As a young boy, he and his family emigrate to Canada where Mark Gentile graduates from a prestigious law school and climbs the ladder to corporate success. Ultimately, as the CEO of a leading North American automobile manufacturer, finds that his own ethical values are being compromised. Mark chooses to resign in order to consider what is really important to him and to frame a plan for the next phase of his life. As part of his journey of reflection, Mark returns to his starting point in Acerenza.
'When you reach a fork in the road, take it.'
This is a gentle, reflective contemporary novel. The process of review and renew which Mark undertakes is one which many of us in mid-life will be (or will become) familiar with. Mark is not seeking a return to some idyllic past, instead he is drawing from the strength of his cultural ties and the beauty of his surroundings to make sense of where he wants to be in the future.

Mark enjoys his time in Acerenza, but his life in Canada is also important, and there are still things he wishes to achieve there.
The author, Kenneth Cancellara, has drawn on his own life experiences in writing this novel. This strengthens the novel because he clearly knows what it is like to emigrate, to have ambition, to be successful, and to reflect. It is also, at times, a little distracting because it blurs the boundaries between the author and the character. Ultimately, this doesn't matter simply because each reader will take a slightly different journey. And that is what I liked most about this novel.
