Security and Special Operations: SOE and MI5 During the Second World War ReviewThis is an excellent book for those interested in the British clandestine services during the second world war. Murphy's book makes good use of a large amount of information recently declassified.
Of particular interest to some will be new material on Inverlair Lodge (sometimes known as the Cooler) in the book. Inverlair Lodge was a special facility run by SOE one of whose purposes was to detain persons who knew details of operations and could not be trusted to not reveal them...and to keep hold of inconveniant people who while they did nothing wrong could not be allowed to run free.
The book offers probably the only published details of the security section of SOE. It also covers the relationship between MI-5 and SOE during the war. This includes the operations to "turn" enemy spies and certain controversial operations during the war.
The subject matter and the price of the book mean that this is obviously a book for people with specialized interests. But if what you want is fresh history and research on the secret aspects of the war, this book will give it to you.Security and Special Operations: SOE and MI5 During the Second World War Overview

High Flyers: Developing the Next Generation of Leaders ReviewThe author is a professor of management at USC, so his perspectives on leadership are limited to those qualities found in executives and in very large businesses that support the training of executives. The most helpful aspect of his book is that McCall urges large companies to develop systematic training for executive leaders, rather than leaving younger executives in a sink-or-swim situation. He also has a bias against ruthless, cut-throat competition and male testosterone-driven demonstrations of power and wealth that executives can get drawn into or promote.
Nevertheless, the book is limited: it says very little about leadership as a quality found in other people, other settings; implies that leadership is a unique quality of exceptional people that can be taught to those up-and-coming risers primarily; and supporting data is quite limited. He stumbles when he talks about leadership per se by using an example of a child violin prodigy, as if this child-becoming-virtuoso should be our model of leadership development.
It also is overwritten, the way stuff from Harvard Business School Press is overwritten: breathless, breathtaking, fawning over winners, etc.High Flyers: Developing the Next Generation of Leaders Overview

A Coach's Guide to Emotional Intelligence: Strategies for Developing Successful Leaders (Essential Knowledge Resource) Review
This book teaches coaches how to use the same approach that experienced FBI agents employ when interviewing witnesses, victims, or even criminals: Look well beyond the surface of the conversation at the person's language, emotion, and body language (somatics). I particularly liked the authors' framing their key focus as Emotional Social Effectiveness--because it is more than emotional intelligence (which sounds both high-brow and out of touch). The authors also introduce five critical techniques, which resonated with me as an executive coach and former FBI agent. Here they are with my personal interpretation of what they mean in a nutshell:
1.Value Self--Respect and trust ourselves
2.Value Others--Respect and trust others
3.Responsive Awareness--Be aware and act wisely
4.Courage--Do the right thing
5.Authentic Success--Balance meaning with achievement
The book not only provides a sound theoretical explanation of each of these techniques, but it also offers a number of concrete examples and case studies. I especially liked the chapter, "Coaching to Enhance, Develop, and Strengthen Emotional and Social Competencies in Government Leaders" by contributing author Lee Salmon (Federal Consulting Group, U.S. Department of Treasury). I only wish that this book had been around when I was teaching and coaching at the FBI Academy in a previous career. It would have helped me and my internal clients a great deal.
I felt like this book was an important read for me as an executive coach and will serve as a great reference book for the future.

There has never been a more timely book than Business Class, it contains the easiest, most current, and best advice avialable on business etiquette. One of the things I liked most about the book was how easy to read, learn and apply the lessons are.
If you read this book you'll sell more, build better and deeper relationships and feel more confident than you ever have no matter what the business setting. I consider myself very well versed in business etiquette but I was amazed at what I didn't know about current rules.
I can't tell you how many business situations I've been in where people simply had no concept of proper etiquette.
In reading the book, I learned many things and will definately be more prepared and appropriate as a result. I had no idea for example that if your fork fell on the floor at a restaurant that you should leave it and ask for another rather than picking it up and asking for another. I also didn't realize what the appropriate thing to do was when a woman walks to the table in a business setting (you'll be surprised, your mom and dad may have given you bad advice).
Jacqueline does an amazing job of covering every conceivable business situation and shows you how to handle each appropriately and with grace.
If you ever go to business lunches, dinners, mixers, networking events, or interact with clients in any way I strongly recommend this book. You'll be amazed at the power and confidence you feel after reading it.Business Class: Etiquette Essentials for Success at Work Overview
