The Complete Guide to Supervisory Training and Development ReviewSeventeen years ago, I was searching for Supervisory Skills training, and I came across the name of Lester Bittel (prounced Bittle) from my Training and Development Handbook. I looked him up and he was not only gracious to take my call, but send this text.
The book is a thorough, perhaps even exhaustive look at Supervisory Skills, and this puts Bittel in a training class by himself.
There are many references for additional sources that could be beneficial. While I did not adopt everything in this book, it certainly gave me a creative nudge in the direction I needed to go.
Once again, thank you, Mr. Bittel!

Great Leaders See the Future First: Taking Your Organization to the Top - In Five Revolutionary Steps ReviewThis is the most thought-provoking book on leadership I have read in some time, and it makes a nice connection to the need to lead differently in the face of powerful, irresistible forces that are becoming stronger. The book offers many diagnostics to give you a sense of where and how you might become more effective. Having diagnosed where you need to improve, you will probably have to rely on other books to get you the details you need to make large improvements.
Ms. Corbin's focus is on "great leaders -- those special individuals who have ethical character, care about their followers, and have the courage to lead them into a positive future." She also says that the purpose of the book is "becoming a great leader under a new set of global rules."
Ms. Corbin heads a think tank called the Center for the 21st Century, and she draws on a lot of forecasts to describe important issues for the new century in terms of trends: more freedom, faster transportation, progressive world peace, advancing technology, increasing capitalism, growing world business trade, and more understanding of diversity. These trends will coalesce into four Dyna (her word) forces on the organization of the future: globalization; marketization (market forces determining resource allocations rather than governments); informatization (knowledge from data); and democratization.
The author reports having been very accurate with her forecasts over the last 15 years, so we should probably take her seriously. I have no ability to forecast the future in a similar way, and believe it cannot be forecast so accurately; but I leave it up to you to decide about her forecasts.
Basically, she is calling for a convergence of forces in a way that will make organizations uncomfortable places for many to work. She sees leadership as being the answer. "Leaders determine whether an organization succeeds or fails." This will require a new model of leader who is more of a strategist, innovator, seer, speeder-upper, and user of new technologies in a more free form environment with mostly project workers involved.
I thought that the book was more of a visionary statement of the ideal, rather than a guide that leaders will specifically follow. For example, it seems to me that a leader could succeed either by creating an environment where these things occur or by actually being the doer who makes them happen. I suspect that the former role will be more prevalent and easier to do. There was not a lot of guidance on the details of what to do. The direction was at about the 40,000 foot level above sea level. That is a good place to see the big picture, but it is hard to connect the dots if you are a leader.
My own work on irresitible forces suggests that the world she portrays is a little too simplified to be helpful for any given organization, yet these are certainly forces that everyone should consider and use to their advantage.
On leadership, my own research shows that the most successful current leaders focus on 2 or 3 roles that are more important to their organization's success than any others, and do those superbly. Perhaps in time, people will be able to do more, but I would be surprised to see widespread expansion of capabilities of leaders occurring very rapidly. I agree with the author that there is more hope in creating free-flowing organizational structures and encouraging everyone in the organization to take on more of their own leadership.
Use your irresistible forces to create chaos for your competitors' organizations by shifting the rules!

Leadership Principles for Project Success ReviewAccording to a 2009 report by the Standish Group, only 32 percent of projects delivered the required scope on time and on budget. The report found that the plurality of projects - 44 percent - were late or over budget, while 24 percent were total failures. These are not encouraging statistics for companies facing the unprecedented combination of accelerating change, increasing complexity, and decreasing budgets.
Thomas Juli's book, Leadership Principles for Project Success, is a timely and welcome guide for business leaders who are under increased pressure to do more with less. Juli points out that traditional project management tools are insufficient to handle today's new business challenges. We can no longer rely exclusively on the linear mechanics of tracking activities, due dates, and assignments to keep projects on target. In today's fast-paced and complex business environment, Juli argues that project leadership needs to complement project management to assure consistent project success.
The book outlines the five principles of the Project Leadership Pyramid: build vision, nurture collaboration, promote performance, cultivate learning, and ensure results. Each of these principles accentuates the importance of recognizing that projects are fundamentally human endeavors and that if the human aspects of a project, especially in fast-changing times, are not thought through, there is little chance of project success. Perhaps this explains why only one in three projects is delivered successfully.
These principles are effective because they recognize that when people have the opportunity to participate in building the project vision, they can personally identify with the project objectives and are able to relate the vision to their daily activities. They also recognize that teamwork is more than the sum of individual activities. It's about the level of collaboration that binds the team members together into a holistic symbiosis. Leaders who practice these principles understand that promoting performance requires bringing people together to focus on solutions and results so they may avoid becoming mired in problems, which is often a consequence of traditional project management. When these principles are followed, people are not punished for mistakes because savvy leaders know how to transform errors into learning opportunities. By accepting that mistakes happen, anomalies surface early in the life of a project when there are more options for solutions, thus avoiding the inevitable 11th hour issues that often plague traditional project management. Finally, by defining interim results and checking back with the customers, these principles assure that projects remain on track so they may be delivered on time and on budget.
Leadership Principles for Project Success contains numerous practical examples of how project leaders can use tools, such as Guided Brainstorming, Vision-Building Workshops, and Team-Norming Workshops to create predictable project success within their organizations. If you want to improve the odds that your projects will deliver results on time and on budget, this book is the secret to project success.Leadership Principles for Project Success Overview

My First 90 Years Plus 3 ReviewSome record producers are as much celebrities as the musicians they record. Not Ken Nelson. In his book, he refers to himself as a behind the scene person in the making of phonograph records. Thus my frustration. I probably first noticed Nelson's name in the late 1970s when I started buying reissued records of Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps. As my interest in rockabilly and country music increased I came to realize that Ken Nelson produced the majority of country records for the Capitol label during the 1950s and 1960s. Nelson's name was appearing on the back covers of a lot of records and CDs I would buy. Yet since then, I have read maybe two really short articles about him and that's it, very much unlike some producers who take the star route. I really wished I could find out more about Ken Nelson.
Now that I have read his autobiography, I am amazed at how much about himself he was finally willing to reveal, even the unhappy things that happened at various stages of his life. Equally interesting are the shear volume of dates, places, and names he was able to associate with even the smaller things that he recalls.
Another interesting feature of Nelson's book are the texts of numerous speeches he gave during his life, especially those given at meetings of the Country Music Association, during which he announced results of surveys and plans completed and started to expand the market for country music.
The vast number of records Ken Nelson produced during this period may be unmatched by any other producer. How did he find time to do anything other than just turn the tape machine on and let it roll? I just recently read a quote by the late Buck Owens (one of Nelson's biggest hit makers) who said that Nelson made it a habit of signing contracts with musicians who had their own bands and wrote their own songs thus making it easier when it was time to go into the studio and record. More often than not, the songs, arrangements, and rehearsals were done and the artists were ready for recording. Thus there was less to do before the recording stage. That's how Nelson managed to record so many artists and songs.
Nelson details his professional and social relationships with dozens of musicians. So, if you are fan of just about any Capitol country or rock musician from this era, you will find much to read about them here, along with photos.
As with everything else in his life, Nelson offers great detail about the illnesses he suffered during the final decade of his life, which paralleled the deaths of dozens of his family members and music associates. This final part of the book is rather sad and greatly resembles what my own parents went through in recent years.
One person stands out in this book, that being his daughter Claudia, who is lovingly credited with taking care of Nelson's many needs, as he got older. Nelson's wife died about twenty years before he did and his daughter is depicted as being very helpful to her widower father. My First 90 Years Plus 3 Overview
