The Investigator's Little Black Book 3 ReviewAs a licensed private investigator and college instructor of private investigation courses, I can personally attest that there are many great sources of information contained in this book... However, anyone experienced with online research (like myself) could most likely find the vast majority of this information via a simple Internet search. Heck, a simple Google query turned up the same results for many of the topics in this book.
I would highly recommend (emphasis added) performing online research over the use of any text simply because the Internet changes daily; as soon as a book like this goes to print, some of its content is already outdated. Stick with the Internet for the most up to date information.
Please be aware of what you are purchasing before you spend your hard earned money. This book contains no, nor does it claim to contain, information regarding private investigation techniques/procedures. It is simply a compilation of various information sources (emphasis added).
With that said, the information contained in this book is solid. It is obvious that the author spent a great deal of time and energy collecting and organizing the information contained within this text. Unfortunately, more than 90% of this information will never be of any use to the vast majority of those that purchase this title. In the entire time I have owned this book, I have yet to use it; and I am a very active practicing licensed private investigator.
If you are not Internet savvy, then this book might suit you perfectly; if you are Internet savvy, then you would probably be better suited spending you hard-earned money elsewhere.
As always, check with your local library or bookstore to see if you can read/review this or any title before deciding to make a purchase. This method has effectively allowed me to make the most of my investigative library budget.

The Swat Cyclopedia: A Handy Desk Reference of Terms, Techniques, and Strategies Associated With the Police Special Weapons and Tactics Function ReviewAs a veteran SWAT officer I can find nothing positive to say about this "Book" Upon receiveing it, you notice it is bound by a cheap plastic spiral binder. It is in a dictionary style format with only the most basic of definitions. The illustrations appear to be drawn by an amatuer graphic artist. Some of the drawings are actually crude stick figures! There is nothing in here that will aid an active operative or an officer who strives to become one. It is especially bad when you consider how much this publication costs. Silent Warfare: Understanding the World of Intelligence, 3d Edition ReviewSilent Warfare is probably the best introductory text available covering the subject of intelligence. It reads like a text book, but that's because it basically IS a textbook. It's a serious academic text rather than a cloak and dagger story. This is one to read for understanding rather than necessarily for pleasure.
The book is fairly short but covers all the bases in terms of types of intelligence, types of intelligence organisation, the various debates surrounding the subject etc. It is, perhaps inevitably, somewhat America-centric. British intelligence and the KGB stick their heads into the picture from time to time, largely to provide illustrative comparisons rather than as studies in themselves.
When making a point, the authors generally try to provide historical examples and comparison, which is helpful, especially for the beginner. It also helps to enliven the text a bit.
The book is extremely well sourced and many of the end notes contain further explanations and are extremely interesting in themselves.
The only thing I feel the book lacks, and this is a fairly minor quibble, is a bibliography. This would have been very useful, especially in what is intended to be an introductory textbook. A bibliographical essay with suggestions for recommended further reading would have been even better.
Quibbles aside, this is a very good primer and to the best of my knowledge there are no books on the market that can compete with it in terms of providing a solid academic introduction to the subject. People with a serious interest in intelligence would be well advised to follow this book up by taking a look at the works of Michael Herman, which provide more in-depth coverage (especially "Intelligence Power in Peace and War") and a non-American (in this case British) angle - though they may be a little heavy for the absolute novice.
To sum up, if you have never read an academic book on intelligence before this is the one to go for.Silent Warfare: Understanding the World of Intelligence, 3d Edition Overview

Providing Executive Protection - Volume II Review"Strategically thought out and tactically applied" can be considered a maxim in the field of executive protection. Under this light Providing Executive Protection II is a global look at the strategy of the Executive Protection Specialist (as opposed to bodyguard). It provides a bird's eye view of many aspects of the profession, written by experts in the field whose credentials lend weight to their essays. The two drawbacks of this book are its brevity and its inconsistent theme. Depth of detail is sacrificed for breadth, with many chapters under ten pages (there is something to be said for this approach). Also, each contributing author sandwiches topical material inbetween his/her introduction and conclusions, reducing the effective size of the book by up to 1/2. Finally, the chapters are inconsistently organized, giving it a "little here, little there" feel. It is a primer book which should stimulate further study in each area touched on. The Art of Executive Protection ReviewAs someone who works in the field of executive Protection, for the past 7 years in Algeria, I found this book both educational and entertaining.
A lot of the books published about this field of work appear to be targeted at people who have watched the film bodyguard and are attracted to the profession for the glamour in my opinion.
For this reason it is rare I purchase a book on the subject. I made an exception in this case as it was recommended by another professional in the field, and was more than pleasantly surprised by the quality of the contents.
