The Case of the Bonsai Manager: Lessons from Nature on Growing Review
The case of the bonsai manager is a refreshingly different book.
The author R.Gopalakrishnan has more than 4 decades of management experience in India and abroad.
His experiences are in the blue chip corporates like UniLever and Tata Sons.
I came to know about the author through one of his speeches to college students.
The analogy that the author brings from plant and animal kingdom to explain concepts in management is
new to me and many people will like such colorful examples from life. The analogies help us understand
what he says and also to remember the teaching.
The Bhopal gas tragedy happened when I was in the final year of my college and I still remember it.
The chapter on this incident touched me quite a bit.
Each Chapter has a a few lines of "key messages of this chapter" at the end. This is the distilled form
of each chapter and one should try to remember them.
Nice:
1. Real life corporate stories from India. We are used to American management books that provide examples from American companies only.
There is even a story on the fire in LIC building in Chennai that happened decades ago.
2. The narrative style is easy and the flow is smooth.
3. His own real life experiences are diverse and valuable to the reader.
4. the author comes out as a humble man and definitely not preacher of his own beliefs and practices
It is upto the reader to use the messages into his or her own work life.
5. The Workbook at the end with a few exercises on self-awareness
Suggestion:
Indian companies now have a high growth phase and its attendant confusions. Greed, incompetency, and such
things are also growing in the business houses. The next book from R.Gopalakrishnan should tell us
about living and growing in this growth phase.
