This book was OK. But it was well written and pretty well outlined. So it gets a 4-star rating. It's also kind of short. Including the index at the end of the book the total page count is only 132. It's another book on risk management and how leaders and public relations executives deal with such situations. How is a CEO of a large (or small) corporation supposed to make sure that some crisis does not sink his ship? This book will help answer that question. It has three parts and 12 chapters as follows:
I. Are we ready? (1-6)
II. Closing the readiness gap (7)
III. The toolkit (8-12)
1. Do we have a crisis or don't we?
2. What we know
3. The wakeup calls - lessons learned, lessons ignored
4. Denial in the land of risk
5. It's about leadership and communication
6. The media - Big pluses, big minuses
7. A prescription for 100% protection and readiness
8. Tools you can use
9. A standard approach to crisis planning
10. The insider's secrets to good crisis planning
11. Validating the crisis and continuity plans to keep them alive
12. Ideas beyond the norm - or - why aren't we doing that?
Let's define "crisis." At page 1 of the book the term is defined as follows:
A crisis is a major event, generally characterized by one or more of the following:
>> Possible or actual harm to individuals or property, including computer networks
>> Imminent threat to "business as usual"
>> Imminent threat to company or brand reputation
>> National or international media attention - either immediate or potential
If you are at the helm of a business faced with a crisis as defined above, then this book may be one you should read. I'm not sure it will really answer all your questions. But it will remind you that you are responsible for dealing with crisis situations facing your company.
