The Executive Director of the Fallen World (Phoenix Poets Series) Reviewwe can wake from any nightmare as long as we're fortunate enough to wake up at all. Waking up laughing (after the coughing and evacuating, the clearing out) can be a tonic as right as lip gloss, a stylish hairdo and a snappy pair of shoes, and that is one beautiful thing that Liam Rector's poems have always reminded me of...that delicious, free-for-all feeling of waking up still alive, and laughing.
Of course, it's perseverance, isn't it. Rector as poet, child, man-child, and man has endured more brutal beatings and harrowing nightmares than the entire populations of certain small nations, Rhode Island, and Delaware. Yet, he lives to produce this long-awaited, eagerly anticipated third book of poems! This is one poet I am proud to call A Contemporary. He holds a doctorate in irreverence and suffering. He's earned Oakleaf Clusters in cruelty and kindness. In his very public life, he's inspired thousands and terrified thousands more.
Through it all, he has made some undeniable sense of this mad, ten second attention span, illusory culture. Like a good bedside reader, he has told us some stories and sung songs that opened our hearts and helped us to understand ourselves and our circles a little better. The older I get, the more I think that's about the best a poet can hope for.
I'm crazy about Rector's tercets in this book, and the poems in general. They're not as sassy or as sharply ironic as those in books one and two, and that's a good thing. These poems are wiser, still mangy enough, but softer somehow, too, calmer, themselves more open. Rector's craft is sharp and sure, and I for one hope that, as one poem suggests, it hauls in the Pulitzer. Wouldn't that be a pretty thing? Well, yes, it would.
