The Presidency and Political Science: Two Hundred Years of Constitutional Debate (Interpreting American Politics) ReviewI highly recommend this book to those who wish to gain a more in-depth grasp of the American presidency and the political thought that has surrounded the office since its creation over two centuries ago. Tatalovich and Engemen's work is very well written in a clear and concise manner. Its progression is logical, interesting, and informative. The Presidency and Political Science: Two Hundred Years of Constitutional Debate wonderfully examines various shifts in political views and thought from one presidency to the next while also placing them in a larger, overall context as well. This work is truly successful at providing a comprehensive look at the American Presidency. Many of my friends and peers have also read the book and enjoyed the light that these authors shed in this book as well as the more intellectual approach to the study of this great office.
The American Presidency is truly unlike any other office in the world. Its unique design set up by the Founding Fathers has proven steadfast enough to last for over two hundred years and yet flexible enough to adapt to situations and demands at hand. Forming a comprehensive study of such an office following it from its conception at the Founding through the present objectively and analytically is not an easy task for many obvious reasons; however, Raymond Tatalovich and Thomas S. Engeman are quite successful in The Presidency and Political Science: Two Hundred Years of Constitutional Debate. Reasons for the success of the authors include: having a set purpose(s) for writing the book; making the book a combination of empiricism, history, and intuition; having valid arguments presented throughout the book supporting their overarching theme(s); contributing to the study of the executive process; conveying the information in a manner which is well-written and easy to understand given a basic knowledge of the matter at hand; and so on.
The Presidency and Political Science: Two Hundred Years of Constitutional Debate contributes to the study of the executive process by providing a complete history and analysis of the American presidency. The many different views of the scholars as portrayed in this book is also particularly useful. This work provides a compact and concise summation of an expansive wealth of knowledge from many of the most intellectual political thinkers throughout our country's history. This allows the reader to gain access to centuries of knowledge and insight, allowing one to better understand the context of the presidency and changes. This text shows the evolution of the office over time and shows the paradigm shifts, as well.
Tatalovich and Engeman's book also provides a certain degree of clarity of contemporary political issues in the United States which may only be achieved by knowing the past and past political situations of similar context. This book demonstrates how political opinion shifts over time which may also help one gain greater insight into modern political concerns. It may even serve to help predict future changes in political issues because the work of Tatalovich and Engeman point out that America's political history of its view of the presidency has come full circle.
