Liberalism in the Shadow of Totalitarianism ReviewIn this era rife with broadcast and published polemics, it is cheering to see energies devoted to a balanced, broad, and clear history of how we, in the U.S., have arrived here. No work of any kind can explain all of an era's progression, much less several eras', but Ciepley's analysis gives us immensely powerful tools with which to try. And given the pervasively divisive era we are currently navigating, it is a perfect time for such an effort.
He not only touches on the U.S.'s continuing, pervasively-guiding reaction to totalitarianism - in intellectual thought, government, economics, politics, law, and culture - he dips heavily into the Why and How with so many examples along the way, it is like traveling along time. Histories are supposed to do that of course, but many do not, and few are so deft that the colors and textures of Today can have their roots exposed on so many fronts and levels. Ciepley's does this well.
I am particularly impressed with how this book mixes the heady analysis of academia with examples so close to...the street, so to speak. I felt like high intellectual analysis was not so remote from everyday life, from either's perspective, and any work that bridges any apparent extremes, particularly when it is objective along the way, serves to uplift us all without even trying. This book is a fine example of just that; doubly exceptional by being in the vein that melds the eagle's view with the traveling circus we call Society.Liberalism in the Shadow of Totalitarianism Overview
